SMALL LUXURY ITEMS: Why They're REALLY Not Worth Your Money and Are There to DISTRACT YOU

  • Are small designer accessories (or ‘SLGs’, which stands for Small Leather Goods) worth it? They’re typically priced within feasible reach when compared with a bag that might cost thousands. As such, they can really pull you off-course if you’re saving for the bag, but get bored and want to treat yourself!
    Well here are my thoughts on why I’d ditch the luxury SLGs, focus on the bag and at most, get myself a belt (instead of the card holder). I really think that’s all you need as these coin holders/card holders and wallets get worn-out so quickly, it’s a shame to spend the money on something that won’t last as long (or look as fresh) as a designer handbag. Includes examples from Chanel, Dior, Hermes, Loewe and Louis Vuitton.

    As Angela said, it is really delightful to watch someone who purchases and enjoys luxury products yet still maintains an objective and sensible attitude toward their value. Sophie is clearly confident in her own abilities and does not need labels to prop up her self-image-and that is one of the most important lessons her videos teach.

      None of those brands worth the price, it's better get something on a generic jewellery or even have something custom made, I was going to get a Tiffany ring (silver) and for the same amount I got an emerald and 14k gold ring made for me.

      Chanel prices are beyond insane - paid $1600 USD for rectangle mini flap around 5+ years ago + they are now more than DOUBLE - it is shocking! the only item from Chanel I would consider would be a classic long pearl necklace but only if vintage + low price - even worse, Chanel only covers bags for 5 years, I'll stick with Longchamp + Hermes who cover their bags/products for life!

    I work luxury retail, some SLG are worth the money. However, most leather goods are trend items and will be heavily marked down in the sale. The one brand i recommend as a starter if you"re buying SLG is Mulberry. Their leather ages really well and is worth the price point.

      I see your point but my husband was gifted a MK cardholder over five years ago. He is very rough on things and it looks brand new. I’ve had a Marc Jacobs wallet for years that I got on sale and it still looks great as well. This is what I don’t get when people talk about the quality of luxury. You can totally get durable, functional SLG’s at a lower price point. It’s much more about the name, but that’s the case with all luxury in the end. Either way you go you really only need one or two; I think she means don’t collect SLG’s because after a few you could definitely get a bag instead.

    For the last 15 years, I have been a massive fan of Louis Vuitton, and when I heard you were mentioning that the quality of the brand was poor, I didn't think much of it - since I have always compared my new purchases with my first bag from LV. But then I thought about it, and started to notice that with my two latest purchases, that the leather started to rip - and that's something I never thought would happen. It's odd to me that leather can 'rip'. Anyway! I wanted to thank you for telling your honest opinion. If you didn't mention it, I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

    The video I needed but didn't know it. Thank you, Sophie! 💕I have been eyeing a Chanel Classic Flap forever, but as I am still doing my post grad I've always felt guilty about "spending money I don't have", but if I add up all the little things I've bought I could have just spent it all on the bag. My problem is that I think people would judge me for buying a bigger luxury item. While all of my friends and family have focused on buying a house and starting to have families, I have focused on my education. I did a year of my Bachelor in NY, my Master in Paris and my PhD in Bologna in Italy. It's kind of a joke that I am the poor well-travelled student and people say things like, "I'd love to have your life, but I have responsibilities". Maybe I'm being sensitive, but I think it's a bit offensive. I feel like I work hard and I deserve to reward myself, but perhaps I am wrong. My question is: how do you handle others people's opinions on buying larger luxury items? 💁🏻‍♀️

    • @roxemary
      @roxemary 5 лет назад +13

      Tbh you seem to be the one who works harder. Academic life is expensive and you're in it for the long term. And is so, so tiring. With that dedication you deserve to treat yourself (if you can afford it)! If someone says something remind them of your long hours studying and researching!

    • @SL-lz9jr
      @SL-lz9jr 5 лет назад +16

      I agree with roxemary. I find it irritating when people judge my lifestyle. We have completely different stories but like you, I worked really hard to have the kind of life that I have. (That said, I know I had a lot of support too). You should be very proud of your accomplishments and totally deserve to treat yourself. When people say they have responsibilities, I remind myself THEY chose that life. They chose to own a car, own a house, have lots of kids, etc. We are simply choosing to put our money towards different things. No right or wrong, only what's right for us individually. :)

    • @ibolyap
      @ibolyap 5 лет назад +7

      And, you are also so brave! You are/ and were living in other countries, studying, living your life. And that's the whole point of the other people: "i would love to have your life, but I have responsibilities". So what? Do that before having kids, if not, grab them and go. You are not a tree... Believe me, you are having much more right now than other people have. You'll be really grateful in couple of years, that you didnt spend your time sitting at home, watching tv, washing up etc. Life goes on, doesn't matter what you do for living. Education is the best investment, enjoy it! :)

    I'd just like to throw out there that my first ever designer piece was a LV Mini Pochette in damier ebene. I've had this item for almost 3 years now and use it every single day. It has no tarnishing, no scratching, no wearing of the canvas or leather bit, and the interior is holding up splendidly. I guess everyone's experience with Louis Vuitton varies which is a shame, but I've now purchased three more pieces (two bags and one more slg) all of which have no quality issues. I wish Louis Vuitton could get it together because I love the brand so much; it makes me sad when others don't have a great experience with them.

    I completly agree with you, but I think that with slg's, if you want one card holder/wallet/coin purse, go for it, but having a whole collection isn't something you are going to get your moneys worth. For me personally, costume jewelry is also good to have a few pisces to add a little something to your outfit. Also I would rather buy costume jewelry than sunglasses, because I can wear that pice of jewelry during the intire year, while sunglasses can only be worn a few months in a year.

    I've thought about buying only small leather goods from CHANEL because I'm kind of apprehensive about a bag, but at the same time I would use a CHANEL wallet every day. I don't think a Chanel bag is practical for my lifestyle and work, but a small leather good would be more practical for me overall. Brands that are more discreet and less expensive on the resell market like Chloe and Balenciaga bags are what I try to stick to. I got for higher end i.e Chanel and Dior small leather goods versus bags. In short, this is really helpful in helping me make a decision about what exactly I want from Chanel as well.

    I totally agree. My friend has recently just started buying designer purses and she was trying to convince me to buy SLGs to begin my designer collection to be in the same boat with her. .I told her I rather spend my money buying a bag instead of SLGs (wallets). Those SLGs, little bit here and there, you can just get one bag. The bag is a better investment. I have been into designers and runway shows since I was in my teens. Due to life, unfortunately I haven’t been able to splurge on one. My dream bag is a Celine belt bag or luggage tote.

    When I bought my first designer bag, I bought it brand new. But I refused to buy the matching wallet...it was almost half as much as the bag! I went and found a complimentary color wallet from the same brand and same material pre-loved in excellent condition (including box, dustbag and all) on the secondhand market. For less than half what I would have paid for a brand new wallet. I definitely recommend buying wallets secondhand, as long as you REALLY put time and effort into looking and making sure of the condition, you can get a practically brand new item for a complete steal.

    The issue is that with us women, our taste is always changing as we and our tastes evolve over the years. This is inevitably where those fashion houses and influencers get the better of us and our desires. I now think twice, thrice, 100 times deeper before investing on special occasions only on more classic pieces with no diehard allegiance to any brands.. that won't end up breaking my bank and the bank of my children lol. I enjoy your videos Sophie, you are way more balanced as an influencer and reviewer than others just recklessly buying and promoting luxury items every second day and feeding this materialistic craze 🤦‍♀️ so many do not showcase their buyer's guilt and financial wreck they are in from their addictions and the perpetual cycle of buying and selling to finance new desires. I am content with the few quality leather goods from Spanish, Indian, Italian, French designers that easily rival top design overpriced brands. There was a time when the SLG's were made SO well, they lasted 10 years plus with daily use. Then, it changed. Longchamp makes SLG's that wear like iron at a very good price. If you can find vintage Chanel or LV, (especially if they've never been used AKA estate sale), you'll understand why they WERE a great deal and worth purchasing back in the day. Hermes uses SLG's to prove the "worth" of someone when it comes to their popular bags; when you realize how much money you've spent on those things JUST so you can be offered a Birken or Kelly...makes you sick. In the end, if you go in with eyes wide open regarding the SLG's and still want to buy them (they are cute and some are quite useful) go for it. I'd rather invest my money in something well made that I will have for a very long time and SLG's are not that. As always, excellent content!

    I think you make good points overall but I also want to just say something from my own experience and that is that there is good and bad with all brands and a lot of that can depend on the particular pieces that you pick, the fabrics and metals that they are made from etc, for example if a piece has aged gold then you’re not going to notice the scratches and brassiness on that as it ages as much. I have some slg’s from Dior that haven’t worn at all not in the slightest and I’ve used them everyday and I carry them in my hand. I have also had some fashion jewelry from YSL and it is the most horrible thing I have ever bought, they have tarnished and the gold has come straight off and I haven’t actually even worn them! That has happened while sitting in their box over time 🤷🏼‍♀️
