The game itself has never been better than it is right now. And it sounds like it's going to be getting even better throughout this year. Welcome, CMDR!
It would be great if one of the new ships released this year was the long ago promised Panther Clipper LX. The ship that could land on a large landing platform with over 1000 tons of cargo. Pilots will need a great deal of skill to get this beast through the mail slot as the docking computer cannot even get a Type 9 heavy through the mail slot reliably.
I hope GalNet wont be in consideration for the chopping block as others have claimed... Great news for Elite & maybe, just maybe, FDev has seen the light about the future of this incredible franchise...

I'm currently at the planet of death, but you best believe that I'm immediately going back to the bubble as soon as the new Python ship drops, because I absolutely adore the current Python 😀
The hallmarks of the Python have always it had the largest cargo capacity for any medium ship combined with 10 module slots and 5 weapon slots it was very versatile and general purpose, much like the Anaconda in the large ship category. This new Python looks fatter. And going off that what can we reasonably surmise/speculate as to how it'll be different from a regular Python? More combat focused? Larger cargo bay? With either of these there needs to be some negatives to offset it not only being chosen over a regular Python but also not completely invalidating the base model. A more cargo focused could balance out with less jump range and perhaps a reduction 4 weapons? It can't really give up module quantity or class quality as these things determine cargo rack capacity. A more combat-orientated one could potentially have less base space but higher class weapon slots.
You're absolutely right, and this gets at an argument I've made for a long time. I'm glad that they're coming out with new ships, and I'm especially happy about the excitement it's stirring up, but my response to the incessant whining about no new ships has been and continues to be "given how much flexibility we have between module configuration and engineering, and the vast aesthetic variety offered by paint jobs and ship kits, what is it you want to do with a ship but can't with the current lineup?" I've never gotten a lucid answer.
@@Datan0de It's very much the case. A lot of the ships in the game are budget-based 'stop gaps' whilst others are pretty much novelties. Something like the Mamba for example.... It doesn't really excel at anything at all and isn't general purpose passable in any area. It's touted as a racing ship but even that is somewhat dubious and is possibly the most niche of niches if it is taken for that. I own about 12 ships myself and 3x of them are Anacondas and 2x of them are Pythons lol and as you say modules and engineering allow them to undertake very different roles. Probably the most absolute niche ship I own is a fully engineered Sidewinder which lives on my exploration carrier for literal one single job, it can precision place an SRV to any spot on a planet or moon, most of the time it isn't even needed but it exists for that tiny uncommon reason. There's so many ships I've never even touched because I've ran the numbers and read the specs, most people will go with what is optimal for the goal and the only reason to not is budget but you're still striving in the same direction e.g. you might want the biggest freighter so you get a type-6 as it's what you can afford, then you get a type-9, then you keep the type-9 for ages because you need rank and money for a Cutter. Most of the time the stop gap ships won't be retained, sometimes they'll get repurposed.
as you can see on the concept art - all three large weapon slots are now on the topside, and the two medium remaining where they where - which could mean overall a better combat ship then the Krait, due to convergence of all weapon power with fixed or gimballed weapons. the bulkier hull could give it room for a fighterbay
