      Concorde reached a top speed more than that, but it was only during tests. They limited the speed to mach 2.04 for maximum efficiency and save on fuel over trans-atlantic crossing. TU-144 only wanted the first place on the top speed list but Concorde aim was to maximise efficiency. Boeing 2707 could've been faster but they found that it was not going to be a sustainable investment and invested the money in the 747 program which has been a great success and that was one of the best decisions they ever made.

      The DC8 is the only passenger airliner known to have genuinely broken the sound barrier. This was an actual event, not a myth. True, this happened on a flight with no passengers and was achieved while the aircraft was in a shallow dive from a high altitude, the sound barrier was nonetheless broken and the aircraft flew faster than sound for 16 seconds before they pulled out of the dive and resumed normal flight parameters.

    A DC8 mat Mach 1. Thats guaranteed to rip the wings off.
    Of academic interest as today speed is limited by ATC requirements. Only if your aircraft can cruise higher than 45000 feet can you exceed about M.84.

    • @monsieurchevrebois9811
      @monsieurchevrebois9811 11 месяцев назад

      Not so, above 10,000 feet, you can go as fast as you are permitted by ATC. Even below 10,000 feet, 250 kts is "flexible" as you can be given an unrestricted departure. A DC-8 in a dive would experience mach buffet but the wings would probably keep pace with the rest of the aircraft.

      That is the theoritical structural speed; meaning at what speed the structure can withstand before it destroys itself. The true level flight speed is far lower, it shouldn't even be on the list

      @@emmanuelatiegha9049 Then why do I see A380s on flight trackers indicating their "TAS" as those speeds for hours on end?
      Unless of course every flight tracker I've ever used was broken to the point that they nearly always glitched out.
      Wait, if my flight trackers are indeed faulty, then why do pilots and aerospace engineers always tell me that the A380 flies at those speeds when I ask them to give me its true specs?
      I guess they could all be blatantly lying to me, but why would they feel the need to lie?
      Okay, I could've just misunderstood what they said meaning that they weren't lying at all.
      So asked for very precise clarification and I asked if I was interpreting what they were saying correctly. They said I understood them spot on, some even said I got an A+ on my understanding of what they relayed to me.
      I just don't understand...
