  • Smartphone technology has made shooting HD video accessible to almost everyone. However, iPhone's shoot in a much higher frame rate than what Avid Media Composer is programmed for, which can make using that footage difficult. This tutorial will show you an easy work around that allows you to not only use the footage, but also take advantage of its high frame rate to make beautiful slow-motion video.
    Software used: Media Composer 8.5.1

How are you cutting the rendered sequence into a new sequence and have it behave like a single clip? When I cut a sequence into a blank sequence, I just get a duplicate sequence with all the separate clips in it again.
If I try to add the motion effect to the individual clips in the sequence, it slows it down all right, but it won't let me then extend the now slower clip in the sequence to include all of the shot that is now missing. I can't get this to work.

      I'm on Media Composer 2018.2

Aha. I think I figured out something. First of all, I do NOT cut the rendered sequence into a new sequence. Not only can I not figure out how to do that as one clip (short of making a Video Mixdown), I've found it's not necessary.
I just cut the clips into a sequence and apply the motion effect as you suggest. My mistake was that when I tried to trim the end of the shot to add all the new slower footage, I was also trying to trim the audio, BUT THE AUDIO WAS NOT SLOWED DOWN. So the timeline was telling me I was at the end of the media. Once I ignored the audio and just trimmed the video, it allowed me to extend the shot to its full length (ten times the duration of the original clip in the timeline).
I'm on Media Composer 2018.2. Thanks.

I can't figure out how to do this in Avid 8.9.3 which is one of the latest versions...

What part are you getting stuck on? I'm sure it will work. Just let us know!

Can you make a video like this about slow mo video but use Avid 8.9 or higher? Avid has changed a lot since 8.5

It's not changed that much. Many of the techniques in this video are still very applicable to this version. The biggest change is that AMA link no longer exist, but instead you would use the source browser to bring the footage in (still linking it, not importing it). The rest is essentially the same. If you can give us a specific issue you are having we can advise you how to solve it. We'll look into doing an update to this soon. But if you need help now, just let me know where you are stuck.

The Motion Effect Editor has changed. Looks different in 8.9

    Now this was informative!!

Now, transcoding an AMA linked file, there is an option to keep the original frame rate (which also makes a significantly smaller file) or convert it to the project's framerate. Not sure you need this work around anymore, but it's still good to know :3

You're absolutely correct! Newer versions of Media Composer can transcode clips in their original frame rate, which make this entire process much easier! This method is still valid for older versions of Media Composer.

Would be nice if you could record your voice if you're not drunken. For me as a non-native-english speaking person it's hard to understand.
