Things have sure changed in gardening since I started. Almost all those plants are readily available in big sizes too even in the bay area. When I started, most were hard to get and if you did?..enjoy the rooted cutting and 5 year wait for it to get some size.
The drought just amped up the Altman's and Monrovia and others to a much higher standard. I applaud them.

I wish I could have a succlent garden outside here in the northeast.i live in NY. I have found cacti that are cold hardy but my succlents are suffering inside over the long winter months

Dont water indoor succulents in the winter until u can clearly see theyre super dried up. I live in europe and i have succs i havent watered in like 2 months i think especially cacti dont water them at ALL durng winter and they should be fine until spring. Winter indoors is about surviving not growing until the weather clears up

Thank you so much. I will certainly make sure I don't water any of them till May.

no problem! general rule of thumb is to lessen watering if the days become short / during winter in places where you and i live for example. because watering when there is no sunlight results in weak sickly growth / etiolation(and rot, ....) . only succulents i still semi regularly water (once every 3+ weeks) are haworthias/gasterias/aloes cuz they like cooler temps / are not huge fans of blazing sun. other succulents i still water are the "weaker" ones as i call them like crassulas who dry out way faster than say an euphorbia obesa. just wanted to clarify a bit more since i dont know what kind of succulents u keep and i dont wanna be responsible if anything was to go wrong haha! im sure u can find a lot more info than i can put in this youtube comment if u google 'succulent winter care' ! if you manage water correctly winter no longer becomes a die off season for succulents haha.

Hi Laura, I live in the Houston area, do you think any of those succulents would survive the cold weather ?..or are there any cold resistant succulants?..thank you.

Alma Garcia Hi, for me it’s partially reading up the types you need and partially protecting them. You just need to read the info on the plant ticket or take note of the name and look it up on Google to start with. I live in Southern Spain which is similar to California, and we are 2500 feet above sea level. I grow many succulents here very successfully, mainly due to Laura’s video advice! However, we have a lot of rain in the winter in this olive and almond grove area, so I have to cover some of the aloes and other susceptible succulents so that they’re not drenched. If they were really wet and then the temperature plummeted here in the mountains, some of the aloes would go like strawberries when they’re frozen.......when they eventually thaw out, they go to mush! Yuk! So, there are quite a few succulents that tolerate colder environments, but you also have to be prepared to protect them. Sometimes you can even get a tender succulent to tolerate a colder temperature just because of the proximity to warmth from shelter of the house or other nestling plants, so be prepared to move them around to find those sweet spots. Mine are all planted in the earth, so I can’t bring them in, so burlap and bubble wrap are handy for me. Hope this helps.
