The Canon R5 Mark II launches in just a few days on July 17 - and Tony Northrup (via CanonRumors.com) has the leaked specs! Well, hopefully they're accurate specs.
Here's what we think the R5 Mark II will look like. CanonRumors expects the price to be $3,999 (sdp.io/R52):
45 Megapixels
12 FPS stills with the mechanical shutter or 30 FPS stills with the electronic shutter
up to 8K at 60 FPS video (probably raw internal)
Eye-controlled autofocus point selection, like the Canon R3
No EVF blackout
Improved PixelShift for high-megapixel images
Some illuminated buttons
Autofocus to -8 EV
Better battery life
Shutter speed faster than 1/8000" with the electronic shutter
up to 16 stops of dynamic range... WHAT?? I talk about this a lot in the video
New IBIS modes. Наука
You’ve now unlocked a new fear: having my camera stolen after photographing a wedding
Still can steal lenses
Maybe it has dual output gain; high gain for shadows and low gain for mid-tones and highlights
I have Magic Lantern on my Canon 6D and one of the features of that software is dual ISO images. I haven't yet been able to play with it but it seems like a really cool idea.
Usually that introduces ghosting
Flash sync!! Nobody seems to mention this. It’d be great to have a higher synch speed
What's the sync ?
its the biggest thing i'm waiting on - otherwise i'm going OM
totally!!!!
That dynamic range would be huge.
There are specs that say the R5 has 14.6 EV for dynamic range. I think it is more plausible that however that measurement was reached is the same way they are getting 16 for the rumor.
Interesting... seems to be more features than I expected... thanks a lot... now I have to work this into my budget.
Does this camera come with a stacked sensor?
Built-in memory sounds nice, but only if it is switchable. You need to be able to replace it after a few years.
you can buy a used A1 for $4200 and have been able for couple of years. Are there R5M2 features that make it significantly better than A1?
Re the possibility of 16 stops with software - how is this "smartphone technology never before offered by Canon" different from the HDR mode on my 70D from 2013 where 3 different exposures are captured as fast as possible and combined in camera ? I'm sure that a new camera would do it better, but isn't it basically the same thing ?
Shhhh! They changed up the words…. You’re not supposed to figure that out…. Now some poor Japanese guy is gonna get fired.
I am sure it is basically bracketing. But older cameras couldn't do those really high burst rates so you would have to either use a tripod or align them in post.
I guess what Canon is doing here is using electronic shutter to get a burst of lossy images of different exposures and stacking them. Canon sensors generally aren't known to have ISO invariance so using really high ISO and dropping it down to normal would benefit them even more.
Another option would just to take a bunch of underexposed images at really high shutter speeds to recover highlights, and add up the shadows to get a normal exposure.
A third option, I heard Canon has the ability to expose each pixel for different lengths, but I doubt this will look good if there is any motion blur going on.
Does the flash work in the electronic shutter?
I’m looking forward to some of the subtle enhancements seen in Canon’s recent offerings - improved battery life, no 30min record limit, reduced rolling shutter, the ability to select slower burst shooting (R5 in electronic shutter is either Single shot or full 20fps, nothing in between!), maybe a quicker way to switch between photo & video like the switch on R6 ii.
I agree that for cameras to succeed in today’s market, the wireless connectivity needs to get MUCH faster and the app connection needs to be way more stable!
Over sampled 4k at 60 or 120??
Please give us GPS, I had it on my 7DII, with the R5, I had to go back to putting a GPS receiver in the hot shoe. Using a cell phone is unreliable and uses too much battery. Extra dynamic range will be wonderful.
I too want GPS
I find dynamic range to not be dramatic and I had to call Canon to see if IBIS was working at all. It was but I didn’t think it was effective.
Needs Oled color top display and option for larger text
Could they be extending the DR by capturing the image in log mode and applying a LUT in-camera?
DR is limited by the sensor so log mode can't overcome that.
I went to your website and I couldn't find any camera recommendations.
I would like menu systems that not only work in vertical orientation but upside down. Macro photographers often invert the camera on the tripod. Upside down should be a no-brainer even easier to implement vertical orientation.
Do you think the used r5 will be more available and cheaper once the r5 II comes out?
A little bit. I cannot imagine large number of people spending $4k on a camera at this time. Am I wrong? I did some travel recently. Seeing people with cameras was extremely rare. I did not bring one either (I have a few).
Lower base ISO? Modern Wi-Fi speeds? YES, YES!
Modern wifi speeds...or just an app that works well. Or modern bluetooth workability.
@@matteout_woodworking wireless tethering could benefit from faster wifi speeds
@@futoenjoyerThis is very true. I’ve used Canon app on iPad on a job, it was slow, but it was better than showing the tiny screen on the camera. Even with Capture One with a cable, it’s not an instant transfer, but I welcome any improvement on WiFi transfer speed. I just worry about the battery drain that comes with it.
@@blackbugmedia I use it all the time to create content. I'm grateful it's there but I would rather it would go through bluetooth than wifi. My phone can connect 8 devices at once but only has one wifi connection. So I need to choose between knowing if I get an important e-mail or controlling my camera who is 8 feet away from me.
In a wireless world why can't they make cameras more compatible with devices.
@@matteout_woodworking Bluetooth is way slower than WiFi. Ideally, what you want is a WiFi Protocol that allows you to connect to a camera and internet at the same time. I think it’s technically possible, we’re just not there yet. But I don’t see Bluetooth speed catching up to WiFi speed anytime soon.
Doesn’t Hasselblad X2D have 15 stops of DR?
Medium format sensor
It's 12.3 according to photons to photos, i.e. that's what it's been shown to be capable of during independent tests and not what the company marketing team says it can.
The original R5 also claims 14.6 in dynamic range. I'm thinking the claimed 16 stops of dynamic range for the R5 II is also just marketing bullshit and will actually have one of 12 to 12.5
Now tell us the truth you and Chelsea already have it in your hands?
Definitely not if he’s releasing this video. If he had it he wouldn’t be able to even speculate about this type of thing.
@@_cjmccullough Jared does it all the Time and he is always getting Canon GEAR. So you must not have noticed.
Plot twist: Tony has the R5 II next to the Sony A1 II just out of frame. That's how he says Sony will have the new one "pretty soon".
They sometimes have them even when they do rumor shows. It’s why they focus on the rumor site at the beginning. However Tony mentioned “when I get a production version” which I think is his way of saying he doesn’t have one now. It will be weird if both Fuji and Canon aren’t seeding to the Northrups.
@@_cjmcculloughpoor thing, you don’t know RUclipsrs
How will this be different from the R6 MII - ?
did they get rid of the recording limit?
Probably
On your list of useable features: in-body image processing like smart phones. For example, they can auto correct their lens distortion, they should have auto aligned/blended focus stacking, auto align/blended panos, etc with RAW outputs.
What about cinema cemeras? don't they have a superior DR?
Great video. Thanks!
Would like more options for FPS in the electronic shutter.
Is the r6 getting a mark3?
No stacked sensor? Even the base z6iii has at least a partially stacked sensor
I'll keep my R5 m1 .. its all I'll ever need !
It’s a shame that a 2024 $4000 camera is not smart. I want computational photography capabilities that rival the iPhone 15 Pro’s. Particularly the ability to blend 100s of images pre and post clicking the shutter, masking in and out portions of each image to produce a single RAW with insane DR. No excuse for not having that in 2024 in any camera. I also want an iOS operating system in addition to all the smart features that you mentioned.
Tony said that he will do more testing when he gets a production Canon R5 Mark II, so he must already have the testing one.
I want all the other aspects he mentioned, security, wifi that doesn’t suck, encryption, menu usability enhancements, before an additional 10 frames per second and slightly better autofocus. He’s mentioned this over and over and is correct. Why can’t we lock our camera, even something as simple as a button combo to unlock would be very welcome. Id be happy with power on, and hitting FN1 3 times and ok on the back 1 to unlock or whatever combo we want, ability to register the camera serial with the manufacturer and a authentication to unlock it if we forget what the combo was leaving it on a shelf for 6 months. This gear is very expensive and it’s insane we don’t have security aspects to prevent theft at this point.
I THINK that the original R5 have 15 stops of DR (or at least advertised as that) so if they're saying the mark II will have 16 stops
It might be just one stop increase
Even if the usuable dynamic range is about 11.5, they simply won't say that
when will Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z be available?
Hope u can have sound with eletronic shutter and more than 30 min recording
Thanks Tony - you just saved me $4k. I'm going to continue to shoot with my iPhone.
What is canon planning on the video cameras? With Olympics in July maybe some of the prototypes will be used there. I am sure Chelsea and your daughter need a trip to Paris to see the Olympics, and you could go there to brush up on your French.
Imagine being able to speak to your camera to change settings between shots, once it has trained on your voice and finger print.
Yes. I wonder if this ever happens (I mean not anytime soon). At least they should put it in the phones. The phone could send instructions to the camera.
3:20 …Lumix (& Olympus?) does this internal too for a long time.
4:33 Also they misuse the term EV. It should be LV. LV measures the light. EV is just the combination of the shutter speed and the aperture. With ISO 100 you should expose a specific LV value with the same EV value.
See I’m not sure. Tony mentioned it’s a bad measure because of different lenses but I think that’s the point. It can do -8ev based on how much light the lens is gathering. Meaning it can work in darker environments if you have a faster lens. The measurement for effective AF is relative to the lens. Hence EV measurement and not LV.
Maybe a DGO sensor?
Tony great the way you explained about dynamic range i.e. bucket. You're absolutely fabulous
There is a new camera that is vertical-first. It's called the Pentax 17. (Joking)
It is shocking that 2 days before a new R camera announcement that no one has really leaked any pics or real information. Everything is still speculative… really odd.
The Live ND of Olympus/OM System and the Sigma FP's ISO 6 work the same way. Computational frame averaging to increase dynamic range. It's a really nice feature for getting super clean images despite the sensor size or shadow illumination levels!
14:14 Minolta´s Maxxum (Dynax) 7 has a rotating menue for vertical shooting. It´s a film-camera.
love your videos. I'm curious about how long it takes for a digital camera sensor to degrade and affect image quality. thanks
With all the continued rumors still waiting for the announcement to determine if I will update my current R5 or just add the R5 II so I have two Canon RF mount bodies to use. I also own Sony and an A1 and A7RV but I don’t shoot video so not sure I want to continue to buy into RF mount without some significant differentiation in some way. Too bad no dual CFexpress type B. So my stills benchmark are the A1 and A7RV right now so what will it do better? Thank you and take care.
I'm looking to get an A7RV as my first mirrorless, coming from Canon DSLRs. I mostly want to continue using my EF lenses and the options Sony mount opens up for future lenses. How do you like the A7RV vs the R5?
@@MisterLongShot_Official The Canon EOS R5 and Sony A7RV are both fine cameras but the Sony and now the excellent 3rd party lens manufacturers offer a wider variety of lenses at many price points and can be more affordable. Color wise with Cobalt imaging software I can produce very similar colors for RAW images but the A7RV will have higher resolution for landscape and architecture and the Canon R5 is very nice for event shooting at 45 Mpixels. Just my opinion and experience. Take care.
About that Dynamic Range figure of 16? Almost certainly that's 'Video' dynamic range, not 'Still Image' dynamic range!
The difference...
Posted Still Image dynamic range is generally measured stopping at a black floor Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 1:1, where the black/shadow image data and noise data reach parity; i.e. image data and noise data are equal.
Conversely, Posted Video dynamic range is generally measured stopping at a black floor Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 1:2, where the black/shadow noise data is *2 times* the image data.
The reason?...
In video we normally view a stream of image frames, and the human eye/brain interprets this as continuous. The effect is that the frames somewhat blur together, which helps to reduce the visual appearance of noise; we just don't perceive the noisiness as much.
That's why video dynamic range is generally expressed as better than still image dynamic range on the same camera and in the same conditions.
Ah this makes sense.
I have been waiting for the price drop for r5.
Considering it's selling for $900 less than the original price, that itself is a significant drop.
There has been a deal in Europe for the R5 plus Canon 85mm 1.2 for 4780€/5220$ VAT included. 🥳🤯
I’m an amateur photographer and see no reason to upgrade to the R5 Mark II. I would love to see some of the upgrades that you proposed. I would pay to get those.
Planning to upgrade to an R5mk2 from my R6 once the R5-2 is available. Agree on most of the usability features, but if they do add internal memory I hope they don't remove the 2nd card slot. If there's a problem with a memory card its easy to swap to another card... if there's a problem with internal memory, thats likely to be an expensive repair. Also if you fill up the internal memory you can't swap it out to a "new card" if you're storing photos redundantly. I do wish they'd add security features though... would definitely pay for that, heck they could make it a subscription service like lojack or something...
Hello Tony, how is Chelsea?. enjoying your content from Nigeria.... Though I am shooting with Canon 600D, that's my capacity for now....
Stay blessed.
6:04 A pixel doesn't store light. The well capacity is a measure of how much charge can be stored, which only indirectly is a measure of how much light a pixel has "captured." Consult your favorite solid-state physics or modern semiconductor devices textbook for a fuller discussion.
The pixel does not exist in the physical world. Values of four photo sensors (RGGB) are combined (computationally) to create a pixel data set in the file. So "pixel" is a name of a group of four light sensors plus their color filters.
Dude, no way they'd only charge $4k for 16 true stops of DR... (unless sales on bodies with the current spec/price ratio are plunging or predicted to plunge?)
Didn’t the d850 do something like that? Exposures stacking?
But he's saying it's doing it without you asking. As in, it's not a feature you can turn off. He's not saying it's bracketing or stacking.
@@aronaldharper543 ah okay. Yeah because I got some great shots using exposure stacking using my old D850. I miss that thing sometimes. It was so comfortable and the image quality would still be on par with the best cameras out even today
We’re talkin’ about caaahhhmras man! - Gerald Undone
In regards to veritical shooting, why don’t they make round sensors?
Yeah round or square would be ideal but the lens mounts have internal workings that would seem to block that... Which is poor planning on the part of the manufacturers.
Round anything is harder to qc unfortunately
The bigger the size of a chip or sensor, the more expensive it is to make and that exponentially. You are essentially wasting 1/3 of sensor unless you really want to shoot square photos.
Internal memory like the Hasselblad X2D would be great on a Canon.
Internal storage is bad unless exchangeable (not soldered) or it is enterprise quality = very expensive.
@@TrekCZ isnt exchangeable internal storage just sd or cfexpress card
Why would you want that?
According to DXO Mark, the R5 has a dynamic range of 14.6EVs. It looks like you listed the DR of the 5DS-r instead by mistake.
it's 11.85 @ iso100 according to photons to photos
dxo's dynamic range measurement is holy inaccurate.
@@ChrisThe1 why is it inaccurate
@@ChrisThe1it’s not inaccurate. They just use a different base read noise value than photons. As long as each one is consistent it doesnt matter.
Umm. 16 stops of -EV is the same amount of stops, regardless if your lens is f1.8 or f11. Your argument that maybe they shot with an f1.8 lens to get more stops of -EV for their focus is off. That would mean that they autofocused in an even darker environment than if they shot at a higher aperture like f11 or f16.
I think 8k60 will be limited to the cooling grip maybe?
Aaah that sounds right
@@TonyAndChelsea no worries I'm always here to help beginning photographers with my genius
What about a comparison of the R5 II to the Sony A7RV? I feel like that would be apples to apples considering the price.
Not global shutter?
All of us need security features starting from camera lock.
Sorry the suggestion of internal memory and only one card for pro level R5 would send me shopping for something other than Canon for the first time in 20 years. Not being able to off load my back up copy of my photos instead of pulling the cards would be a major deal breaker.
I would appreciate a square sensor so that the choice of portrait vs. landscape would shift to post-processing.
❤
You want a camera with vertical first? Sounds like what you need is a Pentax 17!
why cant we get 6K/75fps
I’ve seen a parent use an unmarked canon at our soccer game I went up to him and he immediately put it away 😅
I can watch Tony say "Breaking news" all day....
One of the rumors a while ago mentioned it might have 16 bit color. Guess that isn't true.😢
I hope it is a great camera like the first version. I feel like most brands are coming with marginal improvements.
Thanks...
The anti-theft sounds like a great idea on paper, and maybe it needs to start someplace, but how would it work in practice?
You buy a new camera with some anti-theft device - some thief comes up and grabs it (or takes it from your car, whatever) then they run away. When they get home they open up the camera bag, realize they can't sell it, and throw it in the dumpster. You still don't have a camera and have to buy another one. Yes, it is nice to know that your images will not show up someplace but you are still going have the hassle of police reports, insurance claims, ordering a new camera etc.
So... yes we need to get the ball rolling, but until all of the other non-anti-theft cameras are off the street EVERY camera is a target to get stolen.
Maybe we could just focus on making it harder to sell stolen cameras?
I agree. If thieves could only sell them to me that would really hurt their ability to make money stealing cameras and I would have enough cameras to play with as well. It's a win-win.
i have 14,8 stops DR on my a7s3 arw files
It won't be even £4000 in the UK I bet. Canon will not only use a $1 to £1 exchange rate they will add another £300 at least on top. They won't be able to justify that any more than they could when I asked them to for the original R5. I'll be sticking with my R5 and next time I want to upgrade I'll either wait for the Mkiii to come out or wait until I can get the Mk ii as a grey import for a significant saving like I did with my R5 & R6 Mk ii........or I'll change systems!
If Sony planes to answer with an a1ii in the next 6 months it is strange that the price of an a1 don't go down at all.
So R5ii is basically a Z8 (3 year old tech). I have a feeling canon will have some type of features that haven’t been talked about yet
No pre-capture?
@@chuckmorton8823 pre capture 100% and in RAW also.
I'd like 16:9 video recording without a cropp.
DGO sensor is what's coming and it will greatly increase the dynamic range. Question is, how will they manage the processing requirements of a DGO sensor...
Nope not with R5ii
And imagine a DGO with computational photography Ehehehe. Definitely not coming this body though seems like a cinema body thing only rn sadly
16 stop DR in RAW?
- No
I have an R5. I would upgrade if it has over 13 stops of dynamic range, 4k60HQ, no record limit or overheating, full size HDMI and 10 Bit Wide DR.
So if the R5 Mark II will have 16 Stops of dynamic range then how much dynamic range will the R1’s 24 Megapixels with bigger buckets have !? lol 🤔
I just want anything which makes image quality better. I have a 5Dr. It is 50M pixels. How about a hi res camera or anything which improves image quality. I don’t need high frame rates.
Actually being on par with phone cameras on the software side with the image stacking would be amazing. I don't really get why that hasn't been done 10 years ago.
My 6D II has GPS and I also don't get why that isn't a standard feature, its really useful, especially for vacations.
I don't understand the desire for internal storage at the expensive of the second card slot. By always leaving a card in the second slot and never removing it you basically have "built-in" storage that can be upgrade over time as the cost of cards come down in price or replaced in situations of failure. Built-in internal storage means that it can't be easily replaced or upgraded without a tear-down of the camera. In the case of modern Hasselblad that have internal storage, they are expensive slow-paced cameras that wont see the same level of read/write wear and tear of the storage that bodies like the R5ii or R1 would see. One of the common steps when experiencing weird stability issues with a camera is to use different cards.
Internal storage can be much faster, larger and more reliable.
@@TonyAndChelsea The performance, capacity, and price of cards will always continue to improve over time while the storage built into a camera will always remain the same from the time of purchase. An example would be the radical difference between the the SD cards of today and the the SD cards of the past. In the case of reliability, having a rotation or replacement schedule of cards will be more reliable than being stuck with the same internal memory for the life of the camera. As someone that works with computers, I've seen plenty of solid state drives fail and am a fan of user replaceable storage.
You out of all people should know not to compare manufacturer claimed dynamic range vs 3rd party tested as the methods used to test are drastically different. Find how much DR did Canon claim for the R5 and compare to the claim for the R5ii to get a more accurate number.
Sony's A77 had twilight mode which combined 6 images for clean low light shooting.
The bandwidth required for 8k60fps is like 1.9gigapixels per second, so I would really hope that there's some slow-mo modes on R5mk2 like a 1920x1080 960fps is around that same amount of bandwidth.
I’m hoping we get 4K 180 at minimum, 4K 240 would be a game changer for my work. 🤞
I bet the 60FPS will be via a power supply. Otherwise this would outdo the R5C
The only REAL Key feature is whether or not the R5ii has a Properly STACKED Large MP sensor.
Looks like the new R5ii looks disappointing. High cost with small gain.
Yeah that’s what I’m seeing too. I need to update my back up camera though, so I’ll consider the R5 mark II and move my R5 as the backup. Or just see what the R1 is really made of! If I’m still hoping one of the 2 (if not both) have 16 bit color depth which is vastly more superior and accurate than 14 bit. It’s the reason I’ve considered moving to medium format like the Hasselblad.
I agree with you 100%.
Yeah that 40 fps of the Hasselblad is killer. What a load of BS spew
Great if the r5 I prices drop.
What Camera has lower cost and beats this?
Did you run out of W's and have to use upside down M's for your thumbnail? 😅
You have been making the same thoughtful case for safety features in cameras for years, alongside many other photographers I'm sure, so it's disappointing that nobody has listened yet.
I wish the camera manufacturers would listen to the Northrups' suggestions.
