I’m rereading Prince of Tides as we speak. I read it in my 40’s and I’m in my 70’s now, so it’s been awhile. I knew I loved it, but forgot what an amazing storyteller he was. Just put South of Broad on order from my library. A five-star author for me is Amor Towles. I read Rules of Civility, A Gentleman in Moscow, and Table for Two in the last six months. Lincoln Highway is next. John Steinbeck is another of my five-star authors having read Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Cannery Row and Of Mice and Men. Love your videos!

The next Blake Crouch books you should read are the wayward pines trilogy. They're quick and addicting. The most mysterious of his books. The biggest twists.

I bought "Dark Matter" several years ago but have not read it. I bought "Recursion" a few months back, along with his "Pines" series and decided to read "Pines" first, which blew me away. I heard a lot of very good things about "Recursion", and you just hyper-pushed me into reading it ASAP!

I know others don't feel the same, but Laurie Forest is a 5 star author to me - and an auto buy each time a new book from her series comes out. I HIGHLY recommend checking out Laurie Forest's Black Witch Chronicles. It's high fantasy (and if you like Sarah J Maas but don't really care for the spice - this is a "cleaner" story.)
It centers on a world of different fantasy races who have all sorta taken turns toppling and enslaving one another through their long history. The MC is Elloren, a girl belonging to a race called the Gardnerians (Mages) who have been vying for dominion over the world for quite a long time - only, Elloren doesn't fully realize this. Elloren has lived a sheltered, peaceful farm life with her brothers and uncle but when she goes to University and meets people of other races and learns more about the world - she's forced to question not just her peoples history, but the history of her very illustrious family. Especially, her deceased grandmother, The Black Witch who she's always believed to be a savior when in reality, was a mass murderer. She has to question and then relearn everything she thought she knew. And she has to do it while fighting off accusations that she is the next Black Witch - the strongest mage in existence. Who some prophesies say will save the world - others that she will destroy it.
It's all about diversity and forgiveness over revenge. Its about found family and finding ones true self. It's about having the courage to fight for the defenseless. And its amazing! I've reread the entire series multiple times! Something about this story, the characters, and the world building that just keeps pulling me back in! It's not complete, though so prepare for that!
It's amazing and I hope you check it out.

Dark Matter is a definite 5-star read for me! I love how Blake Crouch presents complex quantum mechanics in a way that's accessible to everyone. As a particle physicist, I appreciate his ability to simplify complicated concepts as I often try to do the same when doing science outreach. My second book by him, Upgrade, was only a 3-star read though. It felt a bit bogged down by too many biological concepts being info-dumped. However after this video, I’m excited to try Recursion next! Hopefully, it’ll be another 5-star hit!

I love this video concept! I just bought Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter and Recursion, and now I’m super excited to read them. I wonder if you would have read Streets of Laredo first, if it would have made a difference. After Blake Crouch’s book, Streets may have seemed much slower. Also excited to read Streets as Lonesome Dove is a fav. And finally, Prince of Tides, I also just bought it and I’m more excited to read it. I’ve not acquired any others by Conroy, but it looks like it would be beneficial. Thanks for your reviews!

  • @Stormbrise

You are so on point, that each of us will approach a book subjectively. I am so old I remember Lonesome Dove as a miniseries, and the film The Prince of Tides. Neither did I watch completely through. Lots of westerns tend to hit me the wrong way, being a tribal member of a recognized tribe. There is only one John Ford movie I will watch and that is The Searchers, because the jerk, still employing Italian actors to be native, finally showed some empathy toward Natives. The Prince of Tides, well I was older, in college and too busy studying to pay much attention to films beside what was the next big Star Trek movie in the 90s. I may try these two books, but you may expect me to toss Lonesome Dove, if it shows a problem with double empathy.

I'm currently revisiting Stephen King (loved him in my youth). Read The Shining last month and enjoyed it, so Doctor Sleep, Fairy Tale, and The Stand are on my October TBR. The other author you mentioned that I'm most looking forward to checking out is Blake Crouch.

Dark Matter was my first Crouch read and I loved it. I then read Recursion and liked it. Yet I think Upgrade, the third Crouch I read, is my favorite. It just hits differently than the other two. Yet, for this same reason (I think), a large portion of readers say this is their least favorite. So, YMMV.

  • @satchel1300
    @satchel1300 21 час назад

So glad you liked Recursion, a lot of people thought it was too similar to Dark Matter somehow? Well anyway, I thought it was amazing, and coming from someone who is usually annoyed by any romance, that speaks volumes. Other than Crouch some 5 star authors for me, (I know you'll totally agree with this one) Brandon Sanderson, I love his magic systems and worldbuilding, Frank Peretti, his Darkness series are some of my favorite books of all time, and probably a controversial one, John Grisham, there's a reason so many of his novels have been made into movies.

I have two Pat Conroy books for you, but in saying that...I actually haven't read them (yikes!), but I have watched the adaptations of them...and was blown away by BOTH of them. BTW, I will rectify this situation in short order, but wanted to tell you what your next two books from this author should be (obviously, my opinion). The good thing about reading these two books (other than the great stories), is that you get to see someone's adaptation of THESE books done masterfully.
Okay. The first one...is The Great Santini (1976). I have this book, but have been leary to start it...since I love the movie SO much. If you pick it up and read it, so will I. Then when I hear your thoughts on it, I will have something to add, too. THEN, I'd hope that you would then watch the 1979 movie starring Robert Duval as the titular character, which he won an Academy Award as Best Actor that year. The supporting cast is amazing, too. Michael O'Keefe (Caddyshack fame) is the son, Blythe Danner is his wife, and many other great performances. Just an amazing story. So...that's one.
The other is The Lords of Discipline (1980) novel. Again, I have yet to read the book, but will (I promise), but absolutely love the movie adaptation. The film came out in 1983, and the reason that my Da and I wanted to see it, was becasue Olympic boxer, Mark Breland was going to be in it (yes, not a GREAT reason to go see a film), but...what a film we DID see that night at the cinema! The movie stars David Keith (was in The Great Santini, but his most recognizable role was playing opposite Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman), Judge Reinhold (Beverly Hills Cop series), Bill Paxton (Aliens, and a ton of other films), and among others, but last, but not least, Michael Biehn (Aliens, Terminator 2 and so many other films). This is a powerful story, and one that I think you'll love.
Okay...sorry to give you homework that I have yet to do myself, but since you love Pat Conroy, already...thought you'd enjoy these two stories...too.
    Talk to you, later.
