For stronger hold you can use xanthan gum powder. Xanthan is plant extract so its vegan and CG friendly too. You have to mix a small amount of Xanthan gum with hot water and mix well in a bowl until it reaches a gel consistency and then mix that gel with already prepared flax seed gel and BAM, you got a strong hold easy, cost friendly and zero chemicals gel :)
What I did when I was making flaxseed gel was pour it into small 1-2 oz. squeeze bottles, then freeze them. This way, I could make one large batch, and just thaw one bottle at a time as needed. No waste, no frequent cooking!
If you want a simpler routine to avoid adding the hard hold gel you can add a tablespoon (experiment with the amount really) of SUGAR! Just plain sugar from the pantry! I have heavy, 2b ish wavy hair and a cast is hard for me to get but the sugar will give you HOLD. Depending on how much you use. I find this to work best in the winter time. super cheap single styler routine.
Thank you for this video. The flaxseed gel recipe I use is 5 cups of water and 3/4 cups of whole flaxseed. Bring to a boil. On medium boil for 6 minutes, then strain while hot through a mesh strainer over a bowl. Cool the gel and transfer to another container to store in the fridge. I get 2 weeks worth of gel. I love that I'm not putting more chemicals on my hair.
I Love my DIY flaxseed gel! It gives me curl definition and crunchy hold. Here's what I do different: I make an herbal tea with lavender and hibiscus first. Then once I've strained the herbs, I add a squirt of lemmon and about a Tbls of honey. To this I then add marshmallow root and the flaxseed and bring it to boil. The next time I make it I'm going to try using a paint strainer bag 'cause I blew out the organza bag I first tried with. Once I have my gel strained out, I put some of it in a small silicone travel squeeze bottle (got it on Amazon) keep that in the fridge and freeze small amounts in an ice cube tray and take out what I need as needed. FYI: Sugar can be added for even more hold. 😁
Add a teaspoon of sugar for every 100ml water you cook. This wil give a strong cast and a good hold for the curls. You can add Cosgar when the gel is cooling down, to make it last for 3 or 6 months out of the fridge. Add some smelling oil like lavender to give it a nice smell.
I think this video is seriously about to change my life. I’ve been trying to get a handle on what it means to have 2B/2C hair and I feel like this is actually helping me understand what products I should use. As well as the process you go through to get those curls. Thank you for this!
I completely missed the bit that said to keep it in the fridge so left it on the side of my bathtub in a container... Ho boy, off flaxseed gel does NOT smell pleasant! So glad I gave it a sniff before piling it onto my head! My hair absolutely loves flaxseed gel though and it's the only gel I've found so far that really helps my curls form nicely, so I can't thank you enough for this video! Amazing and you have zero frizz!!! 👍💯😃 Even though your hair is already lovely,,the flaxseed gel gives it such a bouncy, curly look!! This video is awesome!!

I’m still in the early days of my curly hair transition and I’m still experiencing a lot of frizz (I’m seriously only like a month into this transition so I’m sure I’ll get the hang of frizz eventually). You’ve been such a help in my curly hair transition, thank you so much!
Hey guys! Just wanted to leave some extra tips and tricks I've learned from using flaxseed gel. 1) I make my flaxseed gel 2 cups water to 1/4 cup flaxseed, with this ratio I only need to boil it for 10-20 minutes. 2) I like to add 2 teaspoons of epsom salt, it helps to give it a stronger hold. 3) I can actually keep mine in the fridge for 2 and a half weeks.
By far the best gel I have ever used!!! My hair was so curly and it held. I refrigerate it, but even doing that it does go rancid after a week and a half. Will try organic and see if it lengthens it's life.
@@CrystallineKnowledge-zv3gk I will try that! Thank you! I tried peppermint oil and that seemed to extend its life also. I never thought of adding Rosemary oil...really appreciate the tip 😊

I've been making my flax seed gel for a year and my hair is similar to yours. It works really great. But I think you'd save yourself some time if you used less water. Wow, I have been watching your videos for a couple days now and the flaxseed really brings out the shine. I have to do this for my hair. What sucks is I had bleached a section of hair in the front of my head and have been dying it purple so that whole section which is about 2 inches wide is so dead, I wonder if the flaxseed would help fix the dryness. Thank you for all of your videos, you are one of my favorites.
Your curls look amazing! I've only heard of using flaxseed gel as a way to help hair growth. This is very interesting. I might have to check into making some now that I know of this use as well.

I almost bought a premade ”natural" flaxseed gel until I read the back and flaxseed was way at the bottom of the ingredient list along with like three unnecessary colorants. 🙄 I ended up buying an alcohol and silicone free Garnier Fructis "Fall Fight” gel instead that has hydrogenated castor oil as one of the top ingredients, it does contain glycerin but so did the flaxseed gel and my hair seems to like glycerin.
I've heard 2 cups of water to 1/4 cup of the flaxseeds.. I'm curious to see how your gel comes out. I only boil mine for 15ish mins also. You got me curious now lol also some out honey in their flaxseed gel.
I am a new to the cgm and love your videos. You are genuine, funny and intelligent. I have fine hair, but unlike your gorgeous mane, I have very low density, above shoulder length. I am pretty sure it is high porosity as well I am struggling to find products that will give my hair hold, yet feel soft. I have tried gels and mousses, yet my hair sticks together like I’ve sprayed it with hair spray and I cannot scrunch out the crunch. I use AG Recoil Creme but the waves (I’m 2abc) fall out after a few hours. Can you suggest what type of products I should look for (not brand names as I live in Canada and cannot get many of the products mentioned on RUclips) or techniques that would give me softness AND hold. I can’t use a leave in as my hair goes stringy. I do use a sulphate free shampoo and the GIOVANNI silk conditioner. Any suggestions would be welcome. I am so close to blow drying and straightening my hair again! Thank you
I find that due to the high high amount of glycerin in the Jessicurl rockin ringlets, I am only able to use that product in ideal due points. I think the Jessicurl product gives me more curl enhancement, but the homemade FSG is more due point friendly!
Wow. You use a lot of products I’m tempted to now try all those instead of the flax seed gel lol. Your hair is very pretty but I want to know how much of positive effects did the flax see did on it.? Also this curls are natural or did you use extra products and tools?
Courtney, can you use this in between shampoos after spritzing hair with water? I have super thick hair that used to be in a pixie, growing out to curly bob
Ahh thanks for taking the time to answer me. I fixed my flaxseed potion yesterday, I recommend a funnel to get into containers, otherwise what a mess, lol

How does homemade compare to Jessie Curl Rockin Ringlets? Isn't that flaxseed as well?
I find that due to the high high amount of glycerin in the Jessicurl rockin ringlets, I am only able to use that product in ideal due points. I think the Jessicurl product gives me more curl enhancement, but the homemade FSG is more due point friendly!
Wow. You use a lot of products I’m tempted to now try all those instead of the flax seed gel lol. Your hair is very pretty but I want to know how much of positive effects did the flax see did on it.? Also this curls are natural or did you use extra products and tools?
How does hard hold gel not weigh down your hair?? Usually anything heavier than lighthold weighs down my curls
Can you post the gel recipe?
I love your hair and i love your shirt Where can i find one
Courtney, can you use this in between shampoos after spritzing hair with water? I have super thick hair that used to be in a pixie, growing out to curly bob
Sure! However you use stylers is how I would use it!
Ahh thanks for taking the time to answer me. I fixed my flaxseed potion yesterday, I recommend a funnel to get into containers, otherwise what a mess, lol
Do u still recommend Simply Curls flaxseed gel? Do u have a link?
Also, do u have this recipe written anywhere? Can't wait to try it!
I love your hair this length ‼️🙀‼️
You have the most beautiful hair 😁
Girl 45 minutes IS CRAZYYY no way it takes that long, I’ve tried the recipe and it only takes about 6 to 7 min to form a gel
Have you tried the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner. They claim their silicone is good as its water soluble. Thoughts?
