Every time I see another article about Seinfield complaining about wokeness "ruining" comedy, I always comment that Lenny Bruce was arrested for offending white people. And Lenny Bruce was not afraid.
When you're offending the law, it's actually easier. A few arrests and you're out. But when you're fighting Hollywood and the media, it's an entirely different animal. Hollywood is the gate keeper for stars like Seinfeld. They have the money and the ability to distribute product, and they simply won't support or release content that violates their woke agendas.
I was actually thinking about that the other day and what all the legends of comedy, who were arrested for violating speech laws at the time, would think about today’s comics bellyaching about “freedom of speech”
Seinfeld went on Kimmel for this movie and he's all like, my heros are Lenny Bruce and Bill Cosby. 😅
It is not something I thought of, but it is a great point. People were jailed for working blue, for violating societal norms. Today they are not jailed, just not paid as much.

"Unfrosted" is what happens when a comedian and his buddies keep saying "Wouldn't it be hilarious if...?" and there's no one in the room with the guts to answer "No."

Larry and he made magic, no doubt.
That's my thoughts, Larry is actually the creative genius behind Seinfeld, it was his whole idea, Jerry was funny, of course he added the humour, but even those episodes mentioned, the Chinese Restaurant and Parking Garage and the contest, all were ideas originally from Larry alone. You can then see and understand that watching Curb and knowing this is what is in Larry's head whereas Seinfeld hasn't got the same creativity, he's just funny

I laugh at Jerry complaining about not being able to be "edgy", when the man was KNOWN for the most bland, run-of-the-mill, schlocky observational humor
His stand up is incredibly bland but Seinfeld the show has plenty of risqué material. From the Cigar Store Indian to being molested by his dentist and Kramer being mistaken for a man with learning difficulties after anaesthesia

I think he's mad that he went all those years without pushing the line and now it's 2024 and he can't go back and be a different kind of comedian in the 90s.

No, the genius of Seinfeld the show was that each situation that would arise was like something we could relate to, but had not really thought about or verbalized. It’s that reaction of recognition, thinking, yeah that is right, that I do experience that!

The best retort to Seinfeld's whinge was Rob "Mac" McElhenney sharing a screengrab from _Always Sunny_ of Rickety Cricket.
Which fits because "It's Always Sunny" essentially took the "Seinfeld" premise (a group of horrible, dysfunctional people being menaces to society and each other while learning nothing from their experiences) and did it better. IASIP was one of the first big name live action sitcoms to do away with a lot of the old sitcom conventions Seinfeld was defined by, like the three-camera setup and the laugh track. In later seasons characters like Mac and Charlie started to develop legitimate depth and heart, counteracting the tendency for characters on long running sitcoms to devolve into one-gag caricatures of who they were in the earlier seasons: they zig-zagged this trope by having Dennis go from being a horndog with loose morals to a briliantly portrayed psychopath who's too close to reality for confort. Unlike in "Seinfeld," where despite all of its assertions to the contrary Jerry is still depicted as an aspirational figure who's an echelon above his friends, IASIP took Frank from a well-to-do, put together, self made businessman to the biggest derelict in all of Philadelphia (save for Cricket of course.)
I could go on, but I think I've made my point. IASIP is what Seinfeld thought "Seinfeld" was and still is.

On top of that, I doubt there is a single venue that would refuse to book a Jerry Seinfeld show--despite his "silencing."
It's kind of the same problem with "Bee Movie." The concept behind the jokes was way funnier than the jokes themselves.

Once a comedian starts complaining about PC ruining comedy, it's almost impossible for them to be funny.
Also, I never ate pop tarts growing up, but I grew up on a dairy farm, so my parents wouldn't buy them.
See also; John Cleese. He'd a real grumpy old git, who always said he voted Labour (vaguely equivalent to the Dems), but apparently hates the young, and anything not small 'c' conservative. Last funny thing he did was the movie Clockwise, and that was in 1986!

@@LittleNala What about A Fish Called Wanda? That was in '88, and it still makes me laugh until I pee a little. It was a great ensemble cast, but Cleese was definitely a key player there with some classic scenes.

Speaking of Bill Burr, he has WAY more room to complain about the sensitive "PC people/woke left" ruining comedy than Seinfeld does, yet even he knows better than to do that. Bill Maher tried coaxing him into a whine-fest about that when he was on his godawful show, and Burr immediately refuted him and shut him down.
Bill Burr can sound brutal but he's really a man with a lot of soul. Also, after seeing him in Unfrosted with a lot of hair, I think he's one of those men who actually look better bald. Wonder if he realises that.
I think its a hard adjustment to no longer being considered the height of comedy and a central figure in culture at all times. He's self aware enough to know society has changed but not so self aware as to recognize that that's actually a good thing and that no king of comedy lasts forever
This is one of the many reasons why George Carlin was so great, that he was aware of society and culture in both the ways it changed and how it didn't.
Does any "king of comedy" last forever? No because everyone dies eventually and that makes it rather difficult to create new material, though even if we just consider the title based on their whole body of work, I'd still say no because people of the future will always have the benefit of building on the foundations of their predecessors so of course something better will come along because improvement is part of the nature of humanity, at least we aspire to that. For example, Lenny Bruce was great, but George Carlin took inspiration from him and improved on his style of comedy. There will come a time when someone does the same with Carlin as the inspiration.
Also, comedy is subjective so considering only one person as a "king of comedy" misses that not only are there different types of comedy, but that comedy is also personal.
Exactly! We have at least 100X exposure to as many kinds of comedy, people are not going to spend a lifetime stuck on only one. He made untold $$$ so now he can settle back and enjoy life! I guess it's hard to realize for some that they will not be regarded as some type of authority, trendsetter in their chosen fields forever.
Seinfeld essentially took a 20 year break after this show ended. Yeah he did things now and again but mostly he wasn't producing much "comedy." Which is fine cuz the man had more money than he could spend.

"Comedians" like Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Maher are starting to remind me of characters like Grandpa Abe Simpson, writing on the typewriter "Dear Mr. President, there are too many states in the country. Please get rid of 3 of them..... I am not a crack pot!".
I find the whole thing to be incredibly cynical. The first thing I thought when I started seeing the stupid headlines was why anyone thought he was still relevant, but then I found out about this movie and I realized he was just desperately trying to get his name out in the press and being a crotchety old bigot was the quickest way to do it. Dude's been complaining about "PC culture" for 30 years, you'd think if there were any truth to it he wouldn't be given millions of dollars to make boring vehicles for product placement.
Cleese, Maher and Seinfeld are following the wrong thread, thus doing more harm than good.
Unfrosted came across to me as trying soooooo freaking hard to be quirky and absurd and zany and wow did it suck because of that.
I never found Sienfeld (the television show) funny. I preferred Frasier and, for the most part, avoided Jerry and the gang because I found them annoying.
Woke is used as an excuse to justify behavior and speech that is no longer acceptable. If the right is complaining about something being woke, it's usually because it's not a familiar experience for them, and I will watch just to make up my own mind. Not being able to tell misogynist or racist jokes is not woke. It's kindness.

I've recently discovered Seinfeld as an adult. When it was on tv, when I was a teenager, most of the jokes flew right over me and I never got it. But now I do! George and Kramer is literally 70% of the show. I liked Fraiser a lot when I was younger, now I find him pompous and more of a caricature than a relatable character. I guess this is part of growing up, that your taste evolve and sometimes even change.
I LOVE Seinfeld (the show). It is my favorite TV comedy. Unfortunately, Seinfeld (the comedian is just awful). I bought his stand-up CD when I was in the Army, and I literally fell asleep. I went back and watched Seinfeld and noticed Jerry is literally the least funny one. Most of the time he's just standing by as others do the funny stuff.
I never liked the show or Jerry. I assume he can write funny jokes, but I find his voice and delivery incredibly annoying. He just grates on me. He also comes off as a crappy person, overall.
Any comedian who complains about wokeness is telling you right to your face, "I am not good enough at my job to make audiences laugh, so I am blaming the audience for my failure to do the only thing my job requires me to do."
Every time I see a comedian whose heyday was 20-30 years ago complaining that comedy is too PC today and how you can’t be funny and/or offensive anymore, all I hear is “I’m too old and set in my ways to adapt and evolve with today’s market”

Saying comedy isn’t allowed to be funny and offensive anymore rings a little hollow when the highest rated comedies on TV right now include Rick & Morty and It’s Always Sunny…, and with the likes of South Park and Family Guy still going strong too.
The fact is you *can* be funny and offensive today, but the problem that a lot of these comedians have is that you’ve also got to be smart.
Heck danny devito join Always sunny because he wanted to make sure he didn't end up so out of the the loop, that he owuld end up like Jerry here.
I always chose Bobcat Gold wait he when he was feuding with Jerry. Bob became a great director. Jerry still does the same routines.
It's interesting that the reason Seinfeld hates Bobcat is because Bobcat called him out for being a groomer long before the whole #MeToo movement. Weird thing is, I always liked Bobcat and never liked Seinfeld even though I knew nothing of their feud. I just somehow managed to like the right comic in that situation.

Thanks for doing this, like many others have said, Seinfeld really isn’t that funny in context to comedy greats. His show was stale and the supporting cast really kept it afloat. In recent years he’s slipped even more into the mundane and typical.
For sure, George, Elaine, and Kramer were always the characters which carried that show.
I find that over time there are a lot of things I just don't find very funny anymore. I think the world has changed enough that lots of comedy does not work anymore. It is like going back and watching revenge of the nerds and realized it aged very badly. I think some of these comedians have aged badly and instead of accepting it or trying to adapt they blame it on the world being woke.

Never saw so many talented people used so poorly. Laughed about 3 or 4 times throughout the whole thing. I did love all of the old cars and callbacks to the products I grew up with. The 2 kids were the best actors. It went off the rails in the last half.

King of the Hill > Seinfeld
Surprisingly, I like king of the Hill I couldn't believe it was a spin off of the and Butthead I didn't like Beavis and Butthead and I didn't like and Stimpy, but the hill was so much better of those Ren & Stimpy was a spinoff of Beavis and Butthead so was king of the hill most people don't realize that Ren & Stimpy was a short thing in an episode of Beavis and Butthead became its own show and Hank Hill was the neighbor Beavis and Butthead similar to Wilson in home improvement
I watched a bit of it recently. It holds up.
Like, there was the freaking episode where Peggy's trying to get herself to say the names of body parts in order to teach a sex ed class and she's in front of the mirror going "Hap...piness" "VAAAAAAGGINA!!" Still makes me laugh.
I think koth still holds up because it feels honest and doesn't make the audience out to be idiots
Idk they’re different mediums and lampoon different aspects of life. I don’t see why both shows can’t just exist, one doesn’t have to be better than the other

The Zucker brothers would have run with it where Seinfeld kept tripping and face planting.

You are far too kind Steve. I watched this and I was drinking….and this was just bad. It’s clear Seinfeld just took a page from the Disney playbook and found a boogeyman when this film ultimately fails to move the needle “bLaMe It oN tHE wOkEs!!” Pop Tarts was on the highest of highs after the Pop Tart Bowl, where the winning team ate the mascot after the game! Talk about a buzzkill.
I haven't seen it. On one hand, Seinfeld and Amy Schumer being in it didn't give me a good indication. On the other hand, it had people i do find funny like Bill Burr, Melissa McCarthy and Fred armisen. But then again, space Force had a pretty star studded cast and it flopped
I wish I had been drinking while I watched it. It was clearly aimed at boomers (of which I am one). He included 60s props and references to make nostalgia kick in and distract us from the bad writing. He included familiar faces to tell his jokes to attempt to legitimize his feeble attempts. He tried too hard to be anti-woke and offensive. I'll never get back the time wasted watching it.

@@thing_under_the_stairs It was a shock to find out that the show started out as a vehicle for his standup routine. The rest was supposed to be filler. I ended up ffwding through those - they had some in the early seasons - top-shelf cringe even they were new. At least the show had enough self-awareness to mock Jerry for not having any new material (Elaine refusing to see his performance)
I have believed for a while now that finding a movie dull is a far more damning indictment than finding it offensively awful. This seems to fall into that category.

My feelings on Seinfeld are about the same as Steve's opinion on Lower Decks. (I am neutral on Lower Decks) Seinfeld is probably the most cultural white thing out there. There are only 2 plots of Seinfeld I remember one was being denied soup because Jerry and the gang are assholes. Which leads the restaurateur being called a soup nazi. The second is the shock that they are going to jail in the final episode after years of being terrible people. This is also why I am not surprised to hear him whine about comedians being held accountable for their shitty behavior. This is the most rich white guy thing to do and Jerry has been rich for a long time and his nothing in his life to worry about.

Pointing out the joke in a movie has spoiled so many movies for me in recent years. Do the writers actually think that the giant mallet of a joke/reference they're making is so clever and subtle that the audience won't understand unless someone tells us what the joke is as a follow up 'joke'
Every time a movie does that, I just think of the Wolfcastle Simpson's scene of "That's the joke!"
I’m beginning to come to the conclusion that anytime someone actually complains about wokeness it usually, though not always, it is a sign that maybe what they put out isn’t that good to begin with and use it as either a shield or to prime the pump to get people to defend it. Thrown in someone like Seinfeld we’re more willing, against our better judgment perhaps, to support his claim.
They are also fishing for unquestioning right wing support, by putting it in opposition with "them".
The funny thing to me is Seinfeld acting like his comedy was ever edgy. He wasn’t Andrew Dice Clay; he was the milquetoast standard of observational comedian
When I think about the reasons I liked the Seinfeld TV show Jerry was not the funny one. Elaine, Kramer, George, the reoccurring characters and the guest stars were the funniest thing about the show.
I didn't watch it because a Pop Tart origin story movie just doesn't seem particularly interesting to me. Also, not sure if this will be an unpopular opinion or not, but I think the show Seinfeld is funny, but Jerry Seinfeld himself is the least funny thing about it.

I know I've told this story here before but...in college everyone would pile into the dorm TV lounge to watch NBC's Thursday night lineup - I wasn't really into sitcoms so I'd never seen any of them but I certainly wanted to do whatever the girls were doing, so I tagged along. When I got up five minutes into Seinfeld a girl asked where I was going, so I replied "This is just neurotic Manhattanites whining - if I wanted to see this, I'd go home!"
In concept it’s great. It’s like an SCTV sketch, like if Count Floyd said, “Hey, kids, this time we’ve got something really scary!” And then it ended up being the history of Pop Tarts. That’s awesome. And making fun of biopics and their highly inaccurate, self-serving version of events is hilarious, too. (Watch “The Cole Porter Story” some time if you get the chance. There was just sooooooooo much stuff in Cole’s life they couldn’t touch for obvious reasons. After the premiere, reporters asked him what he thought and he said, “It’s a great life’s story. I don’t know who’s life’s story it is - it’s certainly not mine, I was never in the French Foreign Legion - but it’s a great story”)
I think the problem with Jerry is that comedy is a moving target. It changes over time. What was funny 50 years ago isn’t now. What’s funny now won’t be funny 50 years from now. Jerry’s prime was THIRTY YEARS AGO. He’s still funny, but he’s not *current.* And some of that *IS* undoubtedly political. But much, perhaps most, isn’t.
And at some point every comic goes from being Bob Hope: Funniest Man in the World to Bob Hope: Sleepwalking his way through anaemic tv specials three times a year on NBC.
That's not fair, some old folks like Redd Foxx were funny right up to the end.
I’m just sick and tired of product biographies. It was clever once. Maybe. Now it just feels like a commercial.
I never thought he was funny; I never saw what people liked.
It was people of a certain age who thought it was funny - to make fun of people. Most of the occasional characters are laughed at by the main characters and some of the scenes were 10 seconds long. Frasier was funnier and had an overall story.

Had it's moments. Benefitted from releasing during the network TV era where there was no competition from social media. Jerry has made the mistake of getting us to look back and realize how meh the whole affair was, and joins the ranks of washed comedians whining about wokeness.

I watched this last night. I don't know how to feel about it. I was very stoned and spent most of it feeling like, "What the hell am I watching?" My wife liked it more than I did. I can say that I didn't hate it, but I was just unable to follow some of it. It's probably because I was pretty stoned, but it just felt like 20 random short stories put together. Like I said, I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. So weird.
I guess I'm not old enough to have liked Seinfeld's humour in the first place.
...Or maybe I'm just boring. That kind of humour never appealed to me.

I haven't seen the movie but I'm going to assume that it's as funny as Seinfeld has ever been. Which is... sometimes...in places.
I tried watching "Unfrosted" and i really wanted it to be good because i love Gaffigan and some of the other performers, but not too long into it i started getting antsy, and when i couldn't answer my own question of, "what am i watching this for?", i just switched to something else.
After awhile "isn't this clever?" humor wears thin for me.
I enjoyed it very much. It’s kind of like Gary Gulman’s bit about how they decided on the abbreviations for all 50 states but turned into a movie. I really enjoy humor like this that is basically one long exercise in committing to a bit. Delightful.
When Seinfeld in the news, it's always about how he gets upset that people get upset when he makes fun of them and him not understanding why. 🤔 how do we explain bullying to wealthy old men?

I didn’t grow up with pop tarts because I’m not American. They only started selling poptarts here last year.
When I first saw the articles covering Seinfield's opinion (inane as it is) I first thought: "What bug suddenly crawled up his butt to bring this on?"
Then a few days later I saw that he had a movie set to drop on Netflix and realized it was the same sad act we've seen over and over again from a certain contingent of comedians and celebrities in general as of late. The 'get eyes on my upcoming project by bitching about wokeness' tactic of promotion that I'm getting fully tired of seeing trotted out and only serves to turn me off from wanting to even bother watching any of these people's projects (movie, shows, or stand-ups it doesn't matter).
Manufacturing controversy doesn't always work... especially if the end product isn't worth the controversy in the first place.
Of course in this case it doesn't help that I never found Seinfield's stand-up comedy all that funny and I absolutely despised the show Seinfield. So he wasn't exactly high on my list of people I gave a rat's ass about to being with.
My favorite review I saw about this movie: in over 30 yrs, Jerry Seinfeld continues to demonstrate that he can't act lol and I agree

He's always been kind of low chuckle funny, never really laugh out loud funny to me.
The show was amusing, but not *funny*.
Ive gotten the impression over the years that Seinfeld *thinks* he's funnier than he really is, and somehow gets people to go along with that.
The new movie sounds like something I might enjoy to pass time, but not something I'd find funny.
Though James Marsden as Jack LaLanne is something I think I have to see.
Im old enough to remember unfrosted Pop-Tarts, but not quite old enough to remember their debut.
I've never had the unfrosted ones since the frosted ones came out, that dry pastry really needs that frosting.
Unless, of course, you dunk it in milk.

I find it hard to believe so many people ever thought he was a comedy genius to start with. I watched the first episode of Seinfield when it aired and was underwhelmed. Tried watching the second episode the following week thinking that it might get better and ended up changing the channel after the monologue. Made a third attempt after it hit big and there was a lot of buzz about a particular episode and IMO it was even worse.
My primary issue with him and his show was how mean it was. Terrible people saying and doing terrible things and we're supposed to laugh at them, not with them, instead of just being appalled. When a comedian complains about how "wokeness" or PC is hurting comedy I suspect that the real issue is that they like punching down and fewer people find that funny anymore.
Your argument is semi-flawed but still good.
There is the premise here of "Can Seinfeld still be funny?"
A better question to ask is "Why did anyone ever think Seinfeld was actually funny?"
That's a question I'd like to get to the bottom of.
It does make one ask "what's the deal?"
Anyhow, just imagine how hilarious it would have been if Jerry didn't have to get approval for everything from the Woke Joke Folk. Maybe someday we'll see the uncensored version of the script.

I'm Jerry's age and although it was a structural trainwreck with just one too many subplots (the animated ravioli), I laughed out loud way more than my money's worth. Mainly at the jokes about how different things were back then. I could only think of one person who'd appreciate it the way I did, so it's not a huge audience.
He wasn't TRULY mad about current woke culture. He was mad that people were bringing up the fact that he dated a 17 year old at the age of 38.
I'm 39, and I couldn't imagine dating someone that's even 22 because what would we even talk about?
Oh, and Unfrosted SUCKED HARD.
Whether it's funny or not, the subject matter just has no interest to me and haven't cared about Seinfeld in decades. Sounds like he's mixing up with "Society has progressed and my humour has not" with "society has progressed and now it has no sense of humour".

The drawing of the Pop Tart gag reminds me of the drawing of the Hula Hoop gag in "The Hudsucker Proxy."
Reminds me of Rowan Atkinson speaking out similarly, just before his movie... "Man vs. Bee."
This sounds like an "adult" version of an old TV movie from the Disney Channel in the 1980s called, Mother Goose's Rock and Rhyme...except that had some level of socially redeeming value.
The better question is "Was he ever funny to begin with?"
Since jerry said what he said, I'm amazed I've not encountered one mention of the bee movie.
Jerry Seinfeld was the straight man of his own series. He was never funny.
I did watch this movie out of curiosity and I thought it was dumb but had a couple laughs. I really liked when Jon Hamm came back as Don Draper
First time I came across an Poptart was couple of years ago when I had to go to an food bank. I recognised the brand from American media so I took a box. Pretty much everyone else just looked at them them, checked the ingredients listing and left them on the counter. I tried one agreed with the majority:)
I haven't seen this, but I find a big problem with a lot of filmed comedy these days is the inability to let a joke settle. Writers don't seem to trust an audience to get it.
That's what I liked about Frasier. So many highbrow references they never explained and just assumed the audience would get it. They never underestimated their audience.
Older comics getting lazy is one of the genuine tragedies of art. They think that because of their experience, they don't need to workshop stuff and they don't reach for the bigger laugh. Like, that "cereal honors" bit, I can imagine a funnier version of that where the widow buys 100% into the gimmick and the absurdity is for the audience. Then I realized I saw that bit on American Dad over a decade ago when they had the widow of "Clown with Glasses" mourn his death and SHE IS ALSO A CLOWN!
Someone should have told Seinfeld that this wasn't a good idea.
The manic pacing helped with the jokes that didn't quite stick their landing. Overall I enjoyed the movie maybe because of the absurdist tone. When McCarthy is reading Mad magazine in the lab she didn't get a funny line but it did serve as a visual cue as to what I think the writers were aiming for. I agree that if it had been more tightly focused they may have had a better movie. I imagine with all the cameos and the plot threads to accommodate those cameos, things got a little out of control, and no plot threads resolve. They just serve as just setups for jokes.

I just recently heard on a podcast ("Blocks") that Larry David left around season 5, which says a lot, I think.
I thought the best part of Unfrosted is how in decades of NOT acting. Jerry got better as an actor. Which was never a strongsuit on Seinfeld though he did improve
