This era of funny car was best for me. Thank god someone captured these cars in their glory. These videos are better than any TV coverage by far. Thanks for sharing Dwight
I’ve been working for big Jim since 2004. And he would have fired his driver for doing a burnout past the tree. Nothing but love for Dunn family. See you all 2023
I was there for this race. NHRA make a big deal out of this race. There is an interview with Jim Dunn done just before this race where he said he was going to teach his son a lesson and beat him.
Thank goodness you have these!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not remember what a real Funny car sounded like ,burning out ,dry hops!!!!! Holy crap it is al so great,to me 60 % is the sound ,and I never really cared about.E.T ,sometimes speed, but I grew up with my Dad and Uncle racing their 57 chevy ,hiding kit from my mom and my grandparents,my grandad got mad because they didn't tell him so he could go! He eventually ran a AMC Ambassador down San Fernando ,I was born in 1964 ,so I was young ,but by 4 years old had been to most of the Strips around at the time, and would go until they started closing them all down except Pomona ,which I never have liked! As far as nice tracks with things to do ,This was my Favorite track,I could watch Lion country Safari during ,whatever junk car that didn't run on nitro!!! I was here the night the Beach City Corvette blew up and ran up the hill at the end and onto the freeway,AND GOT A TICKET! He almost dies and the dang cops write him up for burning up his Funny cr on the freeway, didn't have much choice! Sorry for rambling, but if you ever want to make dvd's of this ,my friend and I have our own post production studio and could definitely work something out !!!!! Thanks again for this incredible footage of the end of a legacy.
I don't know if this was the race Steve was referring to, but it could have been. However, when we took Brad's USA1 rocket dragster to Hawaii, Jim and Mike, in Bill Schifsky's Bear Town Shaker, were both part of the show, so I'm guessing that they had raced each other prior to this. This, undoubtedly, would have been a most notable match, though. Remember, Jim ran a 5.85 in this car before Mike took over.
Match race heaven at that time in Orange County International Raceway OCIR, 1 race a month, 64 Funny Cars was a match race. Qualifying and racing 64 Funny Cars, It was the best experience on my life! 64 Funny Cars Rules!!!
Oh yeah… “64 funny cars”, “the Super Bowl of Drag Racing”, “the US Manufacturers FC Championship”, “Chicago-Style” booked-in shows galore!.... THAT was “The County”!
mike had a better reaction time and was going to win till the hides couldn't hold the power. So as a good son he showed he could win it but gave it to his dad.

I bet they had a riot racing each other.
This is one of my favorites!

I would love to see anything you have from Bakersfield, early videos from there seem to be rare- Thanks

I have posted everything I have from OCIR. I have a little from Bakersfield, Sacramento, and Ontario, but the quality is not too good.
