This was about 2-years before my time at OCIR. The first race I went to at OCIR was a Coors 64-funny car event in 1977. I went to every event from then on from Fox Hunts to Winter Nationals, Super Chevy Shows, and run what you brung Friday nights with my 1970 Buick Skylark GS 455. I lived in the Laguna Hills terrace just the other side of the Irvine Ranch cow hills
I took my girlfriend there on our first date in 1975 we got married in 1976 and we are still together today. I went to garden grove high school , and she went to losamigos high there was a time when could run are cars with other high schools at this track on wed. Nights, back in the day. I am now 66 yrs. and still love cars and NHRA drags. We know live in Wyoming and have three kids and one grandson and he is 21 now.
Dude! - in 75 I worked for Super Shops Garden Grove Racing Equipment and we sponsored every single OCIR FoxHunt there was in the 70's & early 80's. I raced my black primered 57 Chevy 2 door post with a mouse 327 tunnel ram'd Muncie 4-speed at OCIR all thru the mid-late 70's. Took my future wife in 1975 down the track and turned low 11's with a brand new un-tuned Eddlebrock TR1YX duel quad tunnel ram no less. Married her in 77 and still best friends to date. Wish I could find some videos of my runs but I have my memories of OCIR and the FoxHunts and grudge nights etc... Good times.. thanks! :)
Let's see now, that was 75 so I was out of high school for a year and I lived about 15 minutes away from OCIR so I was probably there when that was filmed. I miss those days.
Imagine if you can... there were people alive and probably a few at this track, who came from a time when there were only steam locomotives and horses for transportation!! What an exciting time to live through!! I used to talk to my parents all the time about all the things they seen growing up and old. Unfortunately, we have totally lost it in this country today, and it's almost gone!! Bye bye miss American pie!
No...! You're going back too far. I was there in the late 70's about 5-6X's....I'm 65 so it wasn't that long ago. BUT we didn't have cells or social media so much of this is lost. OCIR was pretty raw in those days. I remember a serious lack of bathrooms, there was 1 phone booth on each side of the track. Security was abysmal to non-existent..The little 2 lane road into the track was inadequate......on and on, STILL it was a great place
