The rules of the game
Grammar Poker
The game is suitable for elementary and intermediate students. It is played in two groups of 7-8 students with a set of irregular verb cards for every group. The groups can switch the sets of cards when they finish playing to practice other irregular verbs. For example, for one group you give irregular verbs from B to L, for the other group from M to W.
Elementary level
1. At the beginning of the game every students gets 6 cards. The other cards are put on the desk in a pack. The game can be played clockwise or counter clockwise. Any students can start the game by putting on the desk one card with a verb in the first form. Make sure the students do not play in silence. They should pronounce the verb form to practice pronunciation.
2. The other students check their cards and if they have verb forms of the same verb, they should put them on the desk next to the first one in the correct order. For example, student 1: speak, students 2: spoke, students 3: spoken. If there all the three verb forms are on the desk in the correct order, these cards are no longer in the game and students should take from the pack other cards so that there would be six cards for every student again.
3. If one of the forms (the second or the third) is still in the stack and can’t be put next to the first form, the cards return back to their owners and the game goes on until the students can put all the three forms in the correct order on the desk.
4. Students continue playing the game until there are no more cards left in the pack. The winner is the student who has no more cards to play with.
Intermediate level
Students should not only pronounce irregular verb form but also make up sentences with them. For the first form it should be Present Simple - WE SPEAK ENGLISH EVERY DAY. For the second form - Past Simple: HE SPOKE TO THE PRESIDENT YESTERDAY. For the third form - Present Perfect: He has already spoken to everyone in this room.
How to make Grammar Poker Cards
1. Choose irregular verbs you would like your students to learn.
2. Make cards out of cardboard. 3 cards for every verb. They should be of the size of playing cards.
3. Write irregular verb form on every card twice at both ends of the cards (see the video 2:16).
How to calculate the number of cards
The number of cards depends on the number of students in your group. There should be no fewer than 6 cards for every student plus extra cards to be put on the desk in a pack (1-2 extra card for every student). There were 16 students in my group and they played in two groups of 8 people. 16 multiplied by 6 is 96 cards plus, for example, 24 extra cards to be put on the desk. All in all it will be 120 cards. It means that there will be 40 irregular verbs in the game, three cards for every irregular verb. You can give a pack of 20 irregular verbs to one group, the other 20 verbs to the other group. When they finish playing they can switch the packs.
Let’s calculate the number of cards for a group of 21 students. 21 multiplied by 6 makes 126 plus, for example, 24 cards to be put on the desk in a pack. 150 cards all in all. Let’s divide 150 by 3. There are 50 irregular verbs that you can practice with this group. As for there are too many students in this group, you can divide them into three smaller groups and give to every group a pack of cards with 15-18 irregular verbs.

Só Nice
Dear Jenny White,
First of all, I'd like to thank you for giving many tips and fun games to be applied in the class. As and English teacher in a non English speaking country, your tips help me so much in improving the engagement of me and my class during the lesson.
After I watch this video, I directly apply this to my class (teenagers class). It was fun, though I have a bit problem. How if the cards we gave them at the first place contain past verbs and past participle? For example, 6 cards for a students shows : gave, bought, Fought, Written, Fell, broken. Those are mixed combination of past, and past participle. And one of my student gave the card written 'bought' on the table? Is it okay if it starts with a past form verb? Because I just feel like the aim to make them memorize the present, past, and past participle implicitly in the correct order couldn't be reached if students give the first card not the one with present form.
I hope you see this message and thank you. Please keep on uploading fun game videos to teach ESL!
Sincerely,
Agsha Intan from Indonesia.
PS: For those who wants to play this grammar poker in small class (4-5 students) you better give them more cards at the beginning to each students (8-10 cards for each) to make the game run easier (to give bigger possibility for the matching cards each students have)
Nice to meet you, dear Agsha! Thank you for your comment and your questions.
Yes, you are absolutely right, for a group of 4-5 students I let them take 8 cards.
If it happens so that the student whose turn it is to play has no 1-st form of the verb, he or she should miss a turn and wait for the next player to start with the 1-st form.
I hope I have answered your question. 😊 God bless you! I really feel you are a wonderful teacher ❤
@@JennyWhite555 Aaah I see... that helps a lot. Should've tried the game again later. Thank you Jenny!

Thank you for your support! The player who still has cards on hands after everyone else has finished the game is the loser. All the other players are winners! 😁
@@JennyWhite555 ok I got it tnx a lot
Hello, teacher Are there any books for teaching grammar in form of games? for primary stage not kindergarten range of 8-10 years.
Yes, there is. "ESL Games for School". There are games for primary, secondary and high school students. You can find it here jw555.gumroad.com/l/VcqNN?layout=profile
What happend if a student doesn 't have the card requires...for example, write , wrote....but the Word "written" no one have this card...he need to get a card from the rest of the cards put in the table?and,by the way, he continue playing
Yes, you are right. This student should take one more card. If ıt ıs not the necessary one, it should be kept by this student together with the other cards until later. Those students who put "wrlte", "wrote" on the desk, should take them back and try to use again later.
I would like the PDF for instructions but cannot find them. Thank you.

Paper name please please 🙏🙏 please
Sorry, what do you mean "paper name"?
😂
I don't understand
Sorry to hear that. But if you check the description box, you will be able to download a PDF file with all the instructions and rules. I hope it helps!
Why should we make extra cards ?.
To make the game a little bit longer. If there are no extra cards, your students wil find a match for the cards they have very quickly. But it's up to your to decide whether to make them or no 😉
