Fly was like the last episode with Walt and Jesse getting along. It all goes downhill after that
Not really, they get along for quite a few episodes after killing Gus but before Todd shoots the kid
@@FedeMarco01 True. A big lesson learned. Never trust a man named Todd
@@FedeMarco01Consciously they do have some moments here and there, sure. But one could argue that if you get deep and look at what's going on in the characters's subconsciousness you can see that after that episode, after Walt tells Jesse that he's sorry for Jane (which was an actual pure and deep moment for the character), that pure chemistry between Walt and Jesse that we got ourselves used to at the beginning of the show is not there anymore.
We can trace a paralell between the Fly episode and Four Days Out (S02E09), both episodes were focused on the pure relationship between Walt and Jesse, and we can see how different the characters and their relationship have become. After Fly that purity in their relationship is never the same again, subcounsciously it has all started to go downhill.
This episode is amazing and very underrated and underappreciated by most people.
@@mitchc5538 Tod is a Scottish reference to a fox. Or a sly characteristic. It originated as a nickname, and still is used as, a nickname for Thaddeus and Theodore. Todt is the German word for dead, and death, and is pronounced the same as Todd would be pronounced there. ("Toe-dt").
Ironically, a man named Anthony Todt, recently convicted in Florida, of murdering his wife and children.
It was definitely the last one where their dynamic was actually fun. Afterwards, things got too deep and tense between them for the sitcom-like student/teacher dynamic to be possible again.
Season 3: Walt spends the entire episode trying to kill a fly
Season 5: Walt cooks in houses infested with insects
What they don't show are the 2,000 bottle episodes of Walter hunting down and killing each individual roach.
@@jesse_cole That was the real pest control, no fumigation needed
Literally he broke bad
He's in the empire business
The moment when Walt was drugged and finally let out his regret for letting Jane die was so emotional, didn't feel like a bottle episode
Yah I have to agree
It’s very hilarious but at the end it’s heartbreaking
Great episode
He never regrets it, he doesn't admit that he could save Jane in that episode
@@AA-qb9rrhe clearly showed regret by the way he was speaking 🤦♂️
@@AA-qb9rrDon't have to admit to something to regret it.
@@AA-qb9rr No he totally regrets it. Walt isn’t a sterile and emotionless being, he’s still capable of feeling regret. It’s just buried as deep as Lalo.
My life is a fucking bottle episode
Lmao
Mine too 💯 😭
You good bro?
Me too bro
not only that, but having an entire episode or film take place entirely in a single room or location puts far greater emphasis on the writing. to successfully pull off an interesting story with only one location and, in this case, two characters, you need pure talent and skill. this is one of the reasons that twelve angry men is hailed as a masterpiece in film.
when i watched this episode, i was amazed by how much they packed into the episode because of it taking place only in one room, so i'm really happy the series went that direction, even if it was just to save money.
for the first time with no irony or humor intended, bravo vince.
Yeah I love a well written single set TV episode. Another one that springs to mind is the Doctor Who episode Midnight, S4 E10.
Free churro, Bojack horseman
Love that Vince called it out as one of his favorites because it’s also mine. It and 4 Days Out have the most re-watchability as standalone episodes while also providing an interesting take into the psychology of the characters. Plus the slapstick humor of the episode is the icing on the cake.
This episode is the most psychological and I love this one. It is as comedic as it is powerful.

My favorite episode. Felt like a cartoon the whole time
Especially the bit where the terminally ill criminal discusses in depth his regrets and suicidal ideations. Classic cartoon shenanigans 😂😂😂!!!
@@nobodyburgen4594it was very egoic of him
cute
Dude, same here! This is one of my favorite episodes in the series just because you get to see nothing but how Walt and Jesse each solve problems individually and how they bounce off of each other
@@nobodyburgen4594
tbf adult cartoons do that
also i think the commenter was talking about stuff like Walt falling down from the railing or him and Jesse fighting over the makeshift stick
The episode that proved Walter will find any fucking excuse not to do this dream job properly. He was hopeless.
You nailed it
When Walter slipped off the ledge and rag dolled to the ground against the lab machines I woke up the next morning with sore abs because I laughed so hard.
yeah that was awesome. 4 some reason another thing that kills me is like 2 or 3 minutes of Walt trying to get the thing b4 it advances into sudden death/double overtime. It's all his grunts and "ahhh!" and such. no dialog. so funny
I die laughing every time 😂😂😂😂😂
crazy to think that like this masterpiece had to think about budgets and shit
From Wikipedia:
Bottle episode
In episodic television, a bottle episode or bottle show is an episode produced cheaply and restricted in scope to use as few regular cast members, effects and sets as possible. Bottle episodes are usually shot on sets built for other episodes, frequently the main interior sets for a series, and consist largely of dialogue and scenes for which no special preparations are needed. They are commonly used when one script has fallen through and another has to be written at short notice, or because of budgetary constraints. Bottle episodes have also been used for dramatic effect, with the limited setting and cast allowing for a slower pace and deeper exploration of character traits and motives.
Honestly, first time watching, i didn't even realize that something was wrong with it
I have mixed feelings about it, but without it, the "superlab" phase of the story honestly feels rushed. This episode existing lends it a sense of being lived in and experienced, you get to experience the routine of it with them, which is important because it was practically like a prison sentence at some points, very mundane and likely drove them both batshit in their own way.
I think they did a good job, underrated episode.
nah
People that didnt like the fly episode is because they didnt understand what it was trying to portray
@@albertoabreu5405it portrayed running out of money.
If I recall correctly, this is the worst rated episode in the entire series
You could easily skip this episode and still understand the plot
I was today years old when I found out one of may favorite episodes of one of my favorite shows was written as a cost saving measure.
The Fly was my least favorite episode. it felt like a tremendous waste of time. Later in the series they cooked in bug infested homes, which made no sense based on this pretense that Walt would not cook due to one fly.
Point was that Walt felt out of control, so he asserted control where he could; the lab. At this point Walt felt trapped by Gus, being stuck in a contract he necessarily didn't want and now they were losing product because Jesse kept stealing.
It was a wonderful episode.
Later on it didn't matter, the cook was pure and Walt was in control.
its almost like it wasnt actually about contamination and was a manifestation of something else.
I wish more episodes were like this one. At the same time, the uniqueness is what makes it so special. Like a brief reminder of the cosmic damning both Jesse and Walt are in for, and Walt's the only one who knows it.
The first fly that Jesse killed is Lalo. The fly that showed up in Walter’s bedroom in the end of the episode is Howard.
That is an exceptionally strange fascinating perspective… i love it
i think the fly in Walter’s bedroom would probably be Lalo
What
Opposite
A fly is a fly. Why are you guys naming flies?
My favorite moment in this episode is when Jesse finds Janes old cigarette butt.
Still one of my favorite. Season 3 was so fast and intense that this episode felt like a great breather, while also having some of the tensest scenes in the season (when Walter almost spills the beans about Jane I always get on the edge of my seat) and it is by far the funniest episode in the entire show. I understand why some don’t like it but I will stand by it as one of greats that only gets better the more I watch it.
I think it was the funniest episode of the show. I laughed so much at this.
Ohhhh somebody got GOT yooo
No the funniest one was where they had to spend 3 days in the desert
@@AS-pugAhh wire
Even though I appreciate a good character psyche based episode, the reason it's one of the weakest in the show is because pace-wise it's a completely different feel to the rest of the show which I'm sorry is quite boring. It's decent but I don't think it's 'underrated' at all; I actually think some people try to come up with a rather pretentious reason as to why it's such a 'masterpiece in storytelling'. That being said Breaking Bad is still amazing and this episode is still something like a 7/10
This episode went from underrated to overrated.
This! It's not terrible but it's not amazing. It's filler.
This never made sense to me. They chased this stupid fly around for a whole episode. They had hundreds of gallons of chemicals that could be used to kill the thing and then be scrubbed clean afterward.
It was the worst episode, just as bad as Seinfeld looking for his car.
this was the moment that the production team tried to save money
Bravo vince You did it again
Molly beckett is cool
I think this episode was very important. It really creates the illusion that these are real people and makes it easy to get invested.
It’s such an important episode. It’s one of those that I hated at first and then each rewatch I enjoyed it more
The only legit critique for Fly is that it doesn't move the plot forward. The performances, visuals, and writing are still amazing
who cares about moving the plot forward. like seriously, does it really matter? it’s a great episode, and enriches the characters.
@@johnny-vu6rl heck yeah
I think in a sense it moves the plot by highlighting the characters and where they are psychologically in that point in time, and sets the foundation for the explosive events to come, and why they need to come.
Walt almost telling Jesse about him being there when Jane died is set up here and paid off in Ozymandias
@@20tetsuo77 yep, good points
The dialogue and character development from this episode are very important to letting us know where walters' head is at.
Should've left it out
Community's bottle episode in the study room was the episode that made me realise that TV shows do this!!!😂😂😂
I watched breaking bad 5 times and i skipped this episode with every re-watch. I just can’t bear it.
They do it in every series when you think of it, I remember the buffy episode where they are all trapped in the magic box with amnesia (great episode) but could have been shot in 1/2 days max
Constraint and limits are the parents of creativity. Best food has roots in desperation
Well thats a really good example of restrictions and obstacles leading to some of the best art.
I always interpreted this episode as Walter's attempt to control fate. He wanted to control his environment, by simply killing a fly, but repeatedly failed as though it wasn't meant to be so. Toward the end of the episode he briefly talks about the impossible coincidence of meeting Jane's father the night she died as though it was meant to be.
I always find being limited in any way (cost, time, location etc.) Leads to a massive boost in creativity and quality with the right creators
This was one of the Breaking Bad episodes directed by Rian Johnson. I find this funny because he’s directed the most divisive episodes of two famous series.
I don’t get what she means. How did they do something beyond just another bottle episode?
I was about to write the same thing lol
It's great when the occasional unique episode in a series like this. Seemingly out of necessity. Imagine we could have more of them if they focused on getting the most out of less, more often.
This was the lowest rated episode at a 7.8, fucking insane that what’s considered the “worst episode” is still an amazing episode
I like how Walt is looking through the numbers and calculating as Vince is talking about the budget :))
I loved this episode. I knew even as I was watching it that it was a bottle episode, but I could practically hear the writers discussing how they would use the opportunity to reinforce Walt's descent into madness, narcissism, and need for control, and stretching a feud with a fly creatively to achieve that. You can craft a great bottle episode with talent and love of the art-forn.
This episode of a so decisive, you either love it or hate it, personally I don’t like it I think it was boring and uninteresting but I can see the appeal
You just said you either love it or hate it
Its nice to know that they only did it to save more money and not to give a deep meaning like some people try to make it look.
This. The only meaning is what Walt said. Afraid that the product gets contamined. Everything had to be clean. He was obsessed of his product and thats all.
It CAN be both, ya know.
Of course it has deep meaning
@@redharlow9750 No. Only if you want to overthink. Its same like Walt throwing pizza in the roof means he was throwing his life away in that moment.
@@FinntrolliSUOMI Iconic as that scene is, you can't compare it to an entire episode, This particular bottle episode is not just filler like you think it is, it contains deeper exploration of character traits and motives. Such as Walter's feelings for the Jane situation and him figuring out Jesse's been stealing, if you search it on google you'll find it's ranked number 1 on a bottle episodes list in GameRant and it's explained why on the article itself
i can totally see why people would hate fly just watching the episodes as they came out in like 2011, but when i first binged it recently, Fly was such a cool episode.
I thought this episode was written as a play for some reason now I know there called bottle episodes like when on friends and no one is ready
Damn, whoever wrote the captions spelled "wont" wrong.
It's funny how Walt went crazy over a fly because of the contamination. Yet he made the ricin poison inside the lab😅
I think its funny that rian johnson directed both the most hated episode and the most loved episode
The cinematography this episode was great.
i respect it for what it is, but first time i (tried to) binge BB it started feeling sluggish at a point and the fly is the episode that made me totally stop watching it lmao. im happy i revisited it 2 years later bc it is really a great show but omg what a bore that was for me
It’s funny it’s one of Vince’s favourites but the general consensus is it’s the worst one 😂
I skip this episode on repeat viewings 😬
Jessie finding out that Walt let Jane die, then finding out walt poisoned Brock. These are the real reasons Jessie turned on Walt.
So it's we are "wont" to do which is basically won't without the apostrophe
[If there's one episode worth skipping, it's this, the fly episode.]
No way! Its hilarious. Gas to laugh so hard…
*walt obsessing over a fly*
Lalo and Howard:💀
I remember trying to explain that this episode was a bottle episode to my English teacher and he just wasn't having it. I guess growing up watching filler episodes of kids shows it was easier for me to understand.
It’s a bottle episode but tackles one of the main themes in the show in secrecy starting with the small one Jesse stealing meth slowly covering the deeper darker ones either revealed or not revealed yet
It’s awesome that human beings create better when they have to work around restrictions than when they have complete creative freedom, just like old video game music
Ahaha no wonder they just shot in the living room of Jesse’s house for the later seasons
Fly gets blasted bc it doesn’t have the action, suspense, yelling, etc and that’s a childish view.
Fly is one of the glue episodes that holds the series together. Like how the bassist can be over looked in a band bc he isn’t as flashy but damn do you miss him when he’s gone.
Fly was the last full episode with Walt & Gus being allies. Walt’s monologue while feeling the affects of the sleeping pills to Jesse about meeting Jane’s dad in the bar & when he knew the perfect moment of when his death should have been was one of the best moments of dialogue in the show. Plus Walt discovering Jesse was dealing on the side and warning him to be cautious was a great Segway into everything falling apart in the next few episodes.
I'm gonna go watch it out again tonight
Fly episode was when I knew i could convince my friends this show was overrated
Dude watched the show to convince him he's overrated? That's what I call a big fan
You don’t have to pretend to like this episode guys. It’s literally the only bad episode of the show. There’s usually more than one, so it’s impressive in of itself.
They just wanted to I have the two actors clean the set
Malcom in the Meth Lab episode
always baffled how these intensly popular productions can have budget problems. same with likeGoT at the time. people were crazy for these shows how could they not have enough money
I thought he was gonna connect the song with Daylight 😂
Fly had me in anticipation that Walt would tell Jesse about Jane as it was a slow and semi serious episode. But nothing happened. To me it felt like the perfect time when they both have downtime but obviously it’d mess everything up for Jesse to know.
Its kind of funny because even if its a bottle episode that episode make a reference to metamorphosis of franz kafka and how the protagonist transform himself in something totally different.
i didn’t know so many people didn’t like this episode, i always thought it was incredible
Shout out to Lalo and Howard.
A lot of people don't like this episode but it really grew on me crazy that rian directed this AND ozymandias
Why not just make one less episode for the season?
That episode was pretty damn slow. I liked the tension, but overall, I just skip it if I watch the show again.
They are over-budget because Vince got two real airplanes crash in sky for the season ending! Bravo Vince!
All bottle episodes are like that by definition, toots
This is the only episode I feel like skipping whenever I rewatch BB.
Very entertaining episode
I don't get why people hate SO much on that episode. It was the funniest shit I've seen while watching breaking bad
So memerable
This is an amazing episode
Lalo and Howard: 🧟♂️🧟♂️
I remember hating this episode the first time I watched it. Now after rewatching the show like 4 or 5 times it’s one of my favorites :p
Vravo Bince !
this episode to me, is like the famous "pine barrens" episode in sopranos where two stooges get lost in the forest. struggle and funny stuff happens. thats about it. the difference is that "pine barrens" is the highest rated sopranos episode and "fly" is the lowest rated breaking bad episode. breaking bad audience is all about action while sopranos can sit back and enjoy the characters in a weird situation.
AMC was ridiculous not giving more money to this groundbreaking show! The episode was OK at best.
"wont" not want
it's "as we are wont to do".
Vince Gillian explains? Are you sure?
This is why breaking bad is the best series ever made. A show like walking dead (love that show btw im not hating) if they have a filler episode like this you can tell and its gonna be a pretty crap episode. But i joke with my friend all the time about "theres literally not even a bad breaking bad episode, not even the fly one"
The movie buried maybe the cheapest Hollywood movie
remember when people were shit-talking this episode because they didn't like the new Star Wars movie ☠️
This is also the lowest rated Breaking Bad episode on IMDB
