Always loved the experience of raising a plant from seed, and this series inspired me to ease into this with venus fly trap seeds. Will definitely be using this series as a reference for all the prep & care work; thank you for sharing (and for the seeds)!
I tried the bag method under grow lights and this week they’ve started to sprout. When do I take them out of the bag, and do I need to slowly open it like you suggest for the sarracenia?
We will do a video on feeding the plants! You can apply diluted Maxsea fertilizer to the leaves once or twice a month starting now. (1/4 teaspoon Maxsea into one gallon of distilled water)
@@California_Carnivores these guys are so tiny I'm not sure where to put it on at. Lol. Can't wait for the video. I'm excited to learn all I can about carnivores
I put my flytrap seed in stratification yesterday. Very curious to see what will become of them. I'm planning to put them under growlights for the first year of 2 as suggested. I might do it 50/50, to see how big the difference is. Btw, that is a BIG bag of sphagum moss in the background! 240L is no joke.
There was a big NZ sphagnum moss shortage this last year or two and it was brutal for us! We go through big bales like that for our Nepenthes and other speciality plants. It’s been almost impossible to get!
@@California_Carnivores I was looking for some last year as well, and the only one I could find after a long search was an 80L bag of the 'supreme' quality from Besgrow. Overkill for the few plants I have, and quite expensive, but beggars can't be choosers. As far as I know, it doesn't spoil when kept dry. I might try to get some to 'revive' and have a separate bin of live moss to play with.
The only thing I wanted to see - needed to see! Was how you sow those seeds stratifying in the fridge in sphagnum moss because I don't understand how you then sow them with out burying them accidentally but I can't find it because you just said later on I'll show you how to sow them, but where in which video? I know all the rest.
We usually sow VFT seeds on peat and perlite. Damon demonstrated his technique for tapping out the seeds onto the surface around the 2:42 mark; we just surface sow them. When you grow them on P&P the surface is smooth enough that they don’t get buried. If you do grow them on long fibered sphagnum moss, the small seed could slip in between the fibers. You could try chopping your sphagnum up if you’d like to use sphagnum in place of P&P. Get it wet and then put it in a cuisinart to chop it up much more finely. That will help reduce some of the pockets.
I purchased some VFT seeds from you guys and have potted them. However I have a concern. So I wanted to attempt natural stratification outdoors, so I did this the 1st of January. However, here in San Bernardino, California where I reside it was not dropping below 40° so after 3 weeks outside I switched to the refrigerator method on January 21st. Should I allow the seeds to remain in the refrigerator a full 6 weeks before I take them out or just 3 more weeks? I appreciate your help. Thank you.
If I may ask, I have bought seeds of b-52xb-52 and g14xg14 What is more likely, that they will have regular form, or will they have some traits of their parents plants?
Would you recommend cutting off the flytrap flowers or letting them flower? I cut some off last year and was able to get small plants through stalk propagation. I did let my typicals flower and I didn't notice much of a difference in their size compared to the flytraps I trimmed.
If your plants are of good size (3-4”) across you can let them flower and they will put a bit of energy into the flower and a bit less into the traps but that’s okay. If your plant is smaller or you want the biggest traps possible, nip the buds off as they first emerge and the plant will put more energy into the traps.
I hope we get to see some tips on how to separate seedlings. In my case, I have successfully sprouted some Pinguicula seeds and I’m curious to find out at what point to separate them.
Thanks i knew most of these people talking out their asses about growing in side cant be done and they have to go dormant no matter what was bs i know how hard you can push plants i knew you could fertilize them also to push them you got me interested in what you use im guessing worm castings or at most bone meal because its 5-1-1 for bone meal and 1-0-0 for worm castings
Great tip on skipping the first and/or second year of dormancy. It’s worked for me. Love the series
Thank you! It’s good to hear that worked well for you too!

Such a good series, now i use the word persnickity and cant wait to get my hands on some seeds!:)
😂 we’re so glad you’re loving it!
Wow this is a timely video I thought vft didn't need strat for some reason. Thanks! It's only been a month so I can just stick the pot in my fridge
That’s great timing! Let us know how they work go!
WOW, amazing plants! 👍💚😀
Thank you 😊
My sawtooth vft just arrived. Thanks. Would like to see a video about fertilizing them. Especially these tiny ones.

Damon recommends leaving them in the fridge 5-6 weeks; it’s better to give them more cold stratification time!

I have gotten some venus fly trap seeds off you guys. Do they need to be stratified?
You should still stratify them!

We’ll be doing some follow up videos on the seedlings as they sprout later this year!

What grow lights that won't break the bank would you suggest?
Yescom 225 panels on Amazon!
