@@TBP so like your saying the bolde man with the two headless woman your saying that the bold man is technically responsible for William calypso sister Death
Considering TM4’s intro was narrated by Sweet Tooth’s Carnival barker, I was under the assumption that the backstory was just some tall tale used to drum up business. Like a Bard, spinning a yarn of half-truths and fanciful falsities.
I've also theorized that 3 and 4 take place within the psyche of Calypso (similar to how the Dark universe is within the psyche of Sweet Tooth). 3 represents the low opinion of Calypso has of mortals as a whole (which would explain the really STUPID wishes in the 3rd game) while 4 represents his greatest fear: losing the tournament (especially to an absolute lunatic like Sweet Tooth). It could also explain the extended backstory to the Twisted Metal tournament existing longer than it has, since Calypso is a legend in his own mind.
@@SeanStrife that's a good observation! Calypso plays a bigger role in TM 3 by giving stage introductions and even calling Minion & Darkside his "Friends" during the game intro even though both characters have caused misery to Calypso in the past
I think the timeline can work, if the fact that Calypso is now a demon means, like Satan, God, and other diety like figures he kinda exists outside of time? Otherwise, it was not thought through and they didn't care cause it's Twisted Metal
I don’t know what’s worse. The fact that I’ve now seen *two* comics that are meant to promote video games that involve either a hostile takeover or destruction of the World Trade Center… or the fact that the other comic in question was for *Super Mario Land.*
@@LonelySpaceDetective It was a standalone American series that was made as an ad for the recently released Game Boy, and involved the characters of Super Mario Land escaping from the Game Boy and into real life New York. In one of the issues, Tatanga (who’s trying to get Princess Daisy to marry him), ambushes the restaurant at the top of the World Trade Center and takes everyone else hostage so he can take the princess out on a lovely romantic date, and there’s a panel of the WTC covered in smoke
9:02 The concept of a character wanting to end their life but being unable to is also a thing in the Johnny the Homicidal Maniac comics. Dude tries to off himself a fair few times but either gets distracted or something goes wrong in the attempt. Definitely an interesting thing to have going for a character.
ANOTHER POSSIBLE INTERPRETATION: The intro to TM4 begins with "Stories tell of a carnival..." - therefore it's just rumours/stories/myths, not actually real. It's just how onlookers THINK the tournament began.
Life makes no sense and yet we try make sense out of it with our own interpretation and point of view so why not do the same for games and comics timelines and events. It is on us to do so if we want to. Anyhow I find Calypso's trauma and decent into madness is interesting. As kids we like the heroes as adults we understand the villains more and more
I was wondering if you would ever cover the comics. Coincidentally, there’s a comic dub that’s recently come out on RUclips and it has very solid voice acting, if you want to check it out. Great video as always.
I always figured the trick was that twisted metal existed for a while, but dropped from history for a while, before growing back. I mean, if hundreds to thousands of people die every tournament, it wouldn't take too long because they were out of people to kill back when the automobile was new if they were continuing to stay around the california area. Also the comic kinda doesn't work, if we hold certain endings in TM1 to have any value, since it's mentioned in those by one of the characters (i think minion, maybe) that he's wanted back in hell, and that calypso doesn't want to go back, which would imply it wasn't a deal with satan canonically speaking. This is somewhat confirmed with another ending in one of the later games as well (maybe tm2? or head on. maybe, it's been a while since i've played them), where i think the hearse driver takes his soul back to hell or something similar. It would seem a bit suspicious if satan sent him up for all this entertainment purposes, and yet people in the tournament (even if their wins aren't canon specifically) would be attempting to drag him back to hell for pissing off the boss. But tm4's story more fit to explain it somewhat, since the soul-powering ring and whatnot, would explain why he's wanted back in hell (maybe stole satan's powers), could somewhat explain why he's as influential and powerful as he is, to not be in any real threat to the police coming after him in any serious capacity throughout it all (even in tm2, there's more interest in killing him, than trying to arrest him. which seems like the police are doing it in secret, which would indicate superior have told them to leave him alone).
While the backstory of TM4 does make it difficult to gel with the comic book's story (though we know the characterizations in both TM3 and TM4 are just crap overall), I do kinda like the idea of the tournament being a thing possibly long before even Calypso himself. That he is simply just the latest host to come into power, which would add a certain layer of complexity to the lore of both the tournament itself, and what the duties of the organizer are like for Calypso and his possible predecessors. If anything, would definitely be a lot more interesting than that TV show they're making which is apparently just some stupid Mad Max knockoff set in an apocalyptic world.
5:30 this is totally off topic but the snake in the garden of eden is never stated to be, or even implied to be, satan. That notion is basically disproven because god cursed the snake to crawl on its belly for all eternity yet satan is able to stand and walk upright.
