  • In a live Q&A video, vocal coach Charmaine Brown answers this question from a Worship Vocalist subscriber…
    “I don’t have a problem keeping a deeper tone when I’m in my lower chest voice (E below middle C to G above middle C), but once I get up above a G (or A/B/somewhere in there), my voice becomes nasally & tin-y, and I lose that “BUH” sound that was present in my lower range. How do you keep that low, full tone even as you add pharyngeal resonance as you go higher?”
    To learn more about these vocal techniques, make sure to go through the “Discover Your Voice” and “Master Your Voice” courses online at theworshipvoca...

    This video is amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I have been working with mixed voice for close to 7 years and for 3 years of that practice, i was pushing my sound too much because i studied classical and for some reason I started to push my voice in all genres after that so i didnt truly experience the relaxed almost settling in the mix feeling until this year because i quit classical and started studying pop 2 years ago which is what i shouldve done to begin with. Anyways, this video has taught me so much more and I’m so excited to improve more and more! 🤩

      3 hours is excessive for most people-just make sure to listen to your voice and always stop if it's feeling tired or strained.

    Wow I just tried your exercise.. I hardly ever have that much power in that range!! My tendency is to choose songs in a high key so I can have more punch in my head voice. Then probably like F and lower I switch to mixed or chest but typically don’t bring my mixed voice up higher than that. It didn’t feel like I was necessarily straining and it sounded pretty smooth but my throat felt tired/slightly sore after. Is that cause I’m just not used to it?

    • @worshipvocalist
      @worshipvocalist  3 года назад +1

      It’s most likely that it’s just a new thing for your voice (and so your voice should get comfortable with it over time)! But also - best to warmup the voice before doing big vocal exercises!

    I really enjoy your training! It has taught me so much! So thank you!
    I do have a question about where I am trying to sing more contemporary rather than classical. Like for instance. I am trying to not sing in my head voice when I sing above middle C. I am trying to sing in the " mixed voice". However, it doesn't feel comfortable. The songs I am working on is Goodness of God and King of Kings in D major. The chorus and bridge of the songs. I would love to see a video of how I can transition my voice to sing in that mixed voice. Does this question make sense?

    9:41 I thought the first one sounded better and the second one too heavy-sounding. Is the "buh" voice sounds heavier and fuller, I guess, but is it supposed to sound better? Maybe it's just my preference?

    • @worshipvocalist
      @worshipvocalist  4 года назад

      Hey! Different tonal qualities are just that-different! And very much subjective, so it's natural that you may prefer one sound over another!

    • @worshipvocalist
      @worshipvocalist  Год назад

      Yes, this video (and my other videos) are focused on how to sing throughout your range (including higher notes) in a mix voice, which is a chest-voice-like sound but carried up into the higher range. (I don't call it belting, but others do!)

    im confused when you change fro chest to head on the piano like when you say lighten up how do you lighten your voice

    • @worshipvocalist
      @worshipvocalist  4 года назад

      Hey! We lighten up the voice by changing where the resonance/buzz is happening-by moving it higher in the face (higher in the head cavity) the tone of the voice naturally lightens.

    Can't keep the larynx "down" in a higher range. I can see your larynx rising with the notes. You're singing with your diaphragm not your throat, when you sing well.

    • @worshipvocalist
      @worshipvocalist  4 года назад +3

      Hey Wayne! You can keep the larynx slightly lowered in the high range-but you’re right, it doesn’t stay all the way down. But in mix voice training, our goal is to keep it from jumping way up in the throat and causing tension. Support from the diaphragm is important, and also healthy vocal cord/laryngeal technique.
