Ugh. Just stop. Hamilton was super aggressive in his earlier years and the Senna comparisons were never far away. He was the most naturally gifted wheel to wheel racer on the grid and made overtaking look easy before Pirelli turned the sport into a tyre preservation championship, which enabled slower drivers to compete, just through sheer tyre management alone, while DRS made it easier for every driver to overtake, negating the advantages that Hamilton had. I swear the constant attempts at revisionism by Alonso fanboys is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen

Alonso is one of the most intelligent racing drivers inside the car. He knows everything that is going on around him. Even when he screwed Hamilton's pitstop in Hungary 2007, the fact he was able to time, within seconds, how long he had to sit there, it's unbelievable. Hamilton may be faster, but Alonso is overall better.
Thank you Nigel for this . I have so many of your books because of your purity of F1 and the knowledge . Alonso is the very best of his era and so glad he is back yet so frustrated he doesn't have more titles that he so richly deserves
Thanks - Alonso is such a polarizing personality (his 2 terms at McLaren as an example) that it is easy to concentrate on his missteps rather than on his pure talent.
I think the problem is a lot focus on his “missteps” than his talent and greatness on track and as a whole. A lot of anti-Alonso fans and the European fan base (same thing?). Many I assume have only watched F1 recently. Not towards you personally but as a fan, reading comments about him is 99% undeserved negativity.
Peter, Nigel, Thank you so much for this footage! 🙏 As someone who follow F1 for more than 40 years I totally agree with Nigel... I believe that Fernando, as the best of his generation, is also better than Lewis & Vettel! I think that Alonso is among the 5 GOTs in the history of F1, with Jimmy, Fangio, Stirling & Senna.
@ATS599 to be fair... vettel and hamilton sort of just walked in to very dominant cars and noone other than schumi has truly built a team from the ground up
Disagree on this one. I think he was the best driver in most seasons from 2008-2013 but that was before Hamilton hit his prime. He became as complete as Alonso but with better one lap speed and also much stronger in the wet. Alonso has also had the benefit of going up against generally much weaker team mates than Hamilton has over the years
What generation is he talking about. Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton? Alonso has hardly obliterated everyone over a ten year period. He is a great driver but the best of a generation is a stretch.
Alonso wasted his best years by complaining about team and the car - bad loser out of the Prost mould - happy winning but always blames someone else when he’s not - in same machinery Hammertime wore him down . If any one thing showed Alonso’s true colours, it was that first McLaren season
Alonso is a charming fellow and I think that is a big part of his allure. People and the press at large are romanticized by him and that elevates his status.
@Valentino Raikkonen Let's review his history shall we. He's racist. Had Hamilton's number on his phone under nigga. That was discovered when he lost his phone in the paddock and whoever found it went through his contacts. He ended Piquet Jnr's F1 career when he and Briatore had him crash so Alonso could pit in front of everyone else. He tried to blackmail Ron Dennis into giving him preferential treatment over Hamilton otherwise he would go and tell the FIA about McLaren having Ferrari documents. Ron went straight to them himself. He's such a talented driver that he continually demands his team mate to let him past. EVEN WHEN MASSA WAS LEADING THE RACE ALMOST A YEAR TO THE DAY AFTER HIS ACCIDENT! AND every team he has left he has slagged off in the press. The guy is a total prick!
Nigel Roebuck is the absolute biggest Alonso fanboy in British journalism and has been for many years. His fawning anecdotes are completely nauseating and the last interview I saw him do making excuses about the state of Alonso's career was just pitiful. Andrew Benson is petty bad but Nigel Roebuck takes it to another level
I dont understand the people who say Alonso is the best. What yadstick are you using to get that conclusion?? Best compared to who?? Alonso will remain a 2 time world champion and that's how good he is. No point talking about a fast car for him coz Lewis beat him in the same car as a rookie.
I love that - "LITTLE VICTORIES" Good for every day life. Good to have Alonso back. He was the best. I just wished that he could have sucked it up in 2007 with McLaren and Hamilton's rookie year. He never really recovered after that and always was in a team suffering from a low ebb. Even though he was getting the best out of the car it wasn't going to win a championship especially with Hamilton sitting in the best car on the grid. Was a shame and a waste. Alonso should have been at least a 4 times champion.
Alonso is a snake in the grass ready to strike at a moment’s notice. People seem to forget the Nigel Stepney Ferrari and Mc Claren spy gate. Alonso was in on the information that was stolen from Ferrari. Also on the weekend of the Hungarian Grand Prix on the last day of qualifying he held Lewis in the pit lane for more than 30 seconds so Lewis wouldn’t have a chance to qualify which he was not able to because he ran out of time. Alonso knew that and did it on purpose so his rookie team mate who was ahead of him on points would not have a chance . The FIA noticed it and even do he got pole on that race he was penalized and moved down to six place for the start of the race. Alonso is the type of person willing to lied, cheat or steal in order to win. Those are not champion values, those are thugs values. And everyone here speaks of him like some kind of hero , best of the best, please...
Nigel is my most respected F1 journalist ever. His knowledge, and informed, involving style make his writing unmissable and his absence from Autosport is why I cancelled my subscription after decades of reading. Shame about the music, spoiled a great interview
At McLaren he was outclassed by Hamilton, despite Lewis having literally zero experience in f1. Says alot to me. Plus, say what you want, but I believe he was aware of the plan at Singapore when the "crash" brought out the SC etc... That demeans his legacy in my mind. Plus, he should have won at least one championship at Ferrari between 2010 and 2013, when Vettel was winning everything at Red Bull, but he was simply beaten by a better man on track.
Peter ....PLEASE get rid of the music!!! Its too loud and adds nothing. Alonso can drive the wheels off of any car ya give him, pushes to its limit for the best finish. BUT he cant "develop" a car. All the years at FERRARI with all that money the car (team) went slower and fell behind. Alonso also likes to to play "head games"....never good for a team.
When Alonso is in a car that is not competitive he kinda turns into an asshole. I don't see Renault in the sport for much longer let alone magically coming up with a car that can consistently compete with anyone other than Williams or Alfa. Alonso is a legend but if you hand a legend poop, he is going to hand you poop back.
We all know he isn't quicker than Lewis but a quality driver with a lot of baggage. At Alonso's best a rookie beat him in the same car guess what? His name is Lewis Hamilton
Kimi? A great great driver. Maybe the fastest when the car was perfect suited to him. A total disaster when the car was 1% percent wrong for him. That's too much of a weakness to be considered the best, so no way. Kimi was great for the 30% of his career and worse than his teammate (massa, alonso, vettel, even grosjean) the rest 70%.
I think Alonso is a great driver but not the best ever. In f1 it’s as much about politics as it is about racing. He failed in the team politics. It pains me to say this because I love f1 and am not a fan of his, but Scott Dixon I think is the best of Alonso’s generation. Because he is not F1 will probably never get the respect or the triple crown.
I agree ! Dixon and Alonso are the most similar drivers of this generation. Just look at Dixon at Mid-Ohio last year on used tyres at the end of the race, the same fighting spirit and awareness.
Roebuck is woefully sentimental and confusing a resemblance to Castellotti, with sharing similar driving traits. The fact is, when a rookie challenged Alonso, he crumbled, and decided to drag the team down with him. A true champion would have RISEN ABOVE in that moment. And his legacy will forever be tainted because of his disgraceful actions in 2007. I also think Kimi was quicker peak for peak.
@@ajunta2270 Kimi was definitely quicker from 2002-2006, nobody was better on the Michelins educate yourself. Raikkonen on Michelins was the quickest driver this century. When he went to Ferrari, the tyres changed as Michelin left F1.
All I'm hearing is why Alonso is his favourite. Not why he is the best. Not saying he's not but there really no evidence given as to why he is best. My argument would be that he blew his chances of being the best by the politics he played and the bridges he burnt.
Yes, it does. That you don’t know as much as you think you do. Btw, I think we both know they finished tied on points. And lets not act like Lewis isn’t an exceptional talent, he’s not just any rookie.

@@MT-pv2rf cry about it
@@MT-pv2rf Not any more pathetic that your little insecure rage tirade
To leave McLaren and Ferrari without a title will haunt him, he needs another title, meanwhile Ferrari and others are making it to easy for Mercedes. Personally think he should never have left Ferrari without winning a title.
Wrong nigel! Just wrong. Hes brilliant no doubt. But you would be a fool to think he would beat lewis now.
I've been a Lewis fan for the last 10 years but I don't think he's unbeatable. Some favorable circumstances were enough for Rosberg to edge him in 2016. If Bottas keeps his current form he too is within a shot. Fernando is easily better than both.
Don't get me wrong I think Lewis deserves his 6 titles... but I do think Fernando could beat him in the same car. Would he beat him? I do not know.
@@ajunta2270 He got beat by Lewis as a rookie lol
@@pr-tj5by They LOST in 2007 to Kimi....Hamilton got beat by Rosberg...HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! for the 2016 WDC...Alonso never got beat by a teammate for a WDC title...LITTLE CLOWN!
Better than Hamilton lol
exactly, he is not just a driver, he is a racer. maybe Charles comes closest but no one else, no one.
What's with the terrible muzak?
Thank you Nigel for this . I have so many of your books because of your purity of F1 and the knowledge . Alonso is the very best of his era and so glad he is back yet so frustrated he doesn't have more titles that he so richly deserves
Should have faded out the music after the first 10 seconds. Apart from that I really like the video.
Good to have him back
What's with the music??
Nando adapts so well, he can drive any car and outperform it
I suspect that there will be far more than little victories in the years ahead forza Fernando
Peter, Nigel, Thank you so much for this footage! 🙏
As someone who follow F1 for more than 40 years I totally agree with Nigel...
I believe that Fernando, as the best of his generation, is also better than Lewis & Vettel! I think that Alonso is among the 5 GOTs in the history of F1, with Jimmy, Fangio, Stirling & Senna.
lmfao... thanks for that. is alanso a cheater?
Ezra S, Great driver but not as good as Hamilton.
@ATS599 to be fair... vettel and hamilton sort of just walked in to very dominant cars and noone other than schumi has truly built a team from the ground up
Bless him
Great ... But the music is distractingly loud !
Disagree on this one. I think he was the best driver in most seasons from 2008-2013 but that was before Hamilton hit his prime. He became as complete as Alonso but with better one lap speed and also much stronger in the wet. Alonso has also had the benefit of going up against generally much weaker team mates than Hamilton has over the years
Alonso is his worst enemy. It will be interesting to see if he can keep it together for all involved.
What generation is he talking about. Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton? Alonso has hardly obliterated everyone over a ten year period. He is a great driver but the best of a generation is a stretch.
Music too loud! And not necessary... But too loud if you want to keep it.
Great that Alonso is back
Alonso wasted his best years by complaining about team and the car - bad loser out of the Prost mould - happy winning but always blames someone else when he’s not - in same machinery Hammertime wore him down . If any one thing showed Alonso’s true colours, it was that first McLaren season
Alonso is a charming fellow and I think that is a big part of his allure. People and the press at large are romanticized by him and that elevates his status.
Rose tinted glasses....
@Valentino Raikkonen you seemed to be triggered pal...i think it was a valid point...lighten up...
D.M.A. - you’ve cant lighten up an automaton troll... you’ll see, when it responds to this...
@@koitorob Yep!
Great interview
Nigel Roebuck is the absolute biggest Alonso fanboy in British journalism and has been for many years. His fawning anecdotes are completely nauseating and the last interview I saw him do making excuses about the state of Alonso's career was just pitiful.
Andrew Benson is petty bad but Nigel Roebuck takes it to another level
Yeah he's a huge fanboy. I like Alonso and I'll be cheering for him when he returns but I don't like this type of fawning over from a journalist.
I dont understand the people who say Alonso is the best. What yadstick are you using to get that conclusion?? Best compared to who?? Alonso will remain a 2 time world champion and that's how good he is. No point talking about a fast car for him coz Lewis beat him in the same car as a rookie.
My point exactly!
I can’t concentrate on Nigel’s dialogue and had to bail because of the music, sorry
Fernando best driver, only Racer. The best!
Alonso at Red Bull, even if it’s a wish?
Agreed!
Alonso is a god among men.
He's also one of the most toxic
Prove it
Thank you - but PLEASE ditch the music whilst someone is speaking. Annoying and insults the speaker and the listener.
Will make 2021 season. Can’t wait to see him hope he can have a decent car. Beautiful video could listen for hours ver special, thank you Peter.
Alonso is the best of his generation because... he’s good at fancy dress 🤷♂️
Unfortunately he's not saying anything.
Better than Lewis? In his rookie year he gave Alonso a real run for his money.
Always gives his all.
"Let's retire the car".
🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely correct! People love revisionist perceptions of Alonso’s mystique
Don't forget how he has to get his team mate to slow down, pull over, and let him pass.
Watch 2007 again, boy.
The Best of the generation? Well, Kimi is also in thar contest, so...
Hahahaha nice joke
I love Alonso but the driving part is a fraction of the job. He burns so many bridges that it's kept him out of drives that could have helped him.
Roebuck always goes on about the Renault garage experience... 💤
Get rid of the annoying music please
He will Get That Third Title. Go Nandoooo Goooo.
Not sure he was better than Shumacher and Hamilton lol
Just opinion of one guy ...means nothing! Facts on the other hand point to someone else 💯 facts!
Yeah Alonso made mistakes at McLaren, as do we all... Kimi was never quicker... his car sometimes was, though...
@@ajunta2270 Kimi was definitely quicker from 2002-2006, nobody was better on the Michelins educate yourself. Raikkonen on Michelins was the quickest driver this century. When he went to Ferrari, the tyres changed as Michelin left F1.
@@ajunta2270 In 2007 he came up against a rookie that was just quicker, simple!
Music too loud that sinks some of the comments. Pathetic voice mixing. Otherwise a very good content.
Shame, this is unwatchable for me because of the music.
I gave up after about a minute. It may have been a good interview. Who knows.
All I'm hearing is why Alonso is his favourite. Not why he is the best. Not saying he's not but there really no evidence given as to why he is best.
My argument would be that he blew his chances of being the best by the politics he played and the bridges he burnt.
Alo is the best remains from the V10 era. Remains a monster driver. Not sure I agree with his return though.
He didn't even beat him when lewis was a rookie... says something i think.
Yes, it does. That you don’t know as much as you think you do. Btw, I think we both know they finished tied on points. And lets not act like Lewis isn’t an exceptional talent, he’s not just any rookie.
@@nestogsw9659 He lost to Lewis on count back but was extremely fortunate to get back on level points.
the volume on this horridly annoying score is about 50% too high!
High praise for Alonzo...I tend to agree he goes strong lap after lap limited only by the car & tire performance and strategy.
i wish alonzo was in the other red bull seat alongside max
Preferably, yes. Or any other competitive car really so his talent can be on display.
