From America: With no British bias towards Hamilton, I've always thought Alonso was the best and most wasted talent (By the teams), but staying up all night to watch him shave tenths to seconds EVERY lap during his double night stint during Le Mans 2018 proved how incredible he is. He reeled that #7 Toyota in like a floundering fish.

Most wanted driver? Complete and utter nonsense. No top team in F1 wants anything to do with him
Mercedes? Nope. They want Hamilton, not Alonso. They also still blame Alonso for his blackmail attempt and his subsequent role in the Spygate Scandal in 2007.
Ferrari? Nope. The signed Vettel behind his back in 2014 when Alonso was being his usual toxic self during contract negotiations and now Ferrari have dumped Vettel to focus on Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz for the future.
Red Bull? Nope they have have stated they don't want Alonso and why would they when they have Max Verstappen? Alonso would never in a million years join a team against someone like Max anyway because he's afraid of getting exposed again the same way Hamilton exposed him as a rookie in 2007.
So what the hell are you talking about? Alonso is now in a last ditch desperate gamble with Renault who have been garbage for years now. Its all a bit of a shambles really.

Same with Pat Fry, Mark Temple (called Alonso "the most intelligent driver I have ever worked with) and Andrea Stella. Stella said this of Alonso:
“And while Fernando may look a tough personality, that is more a presentation. It is more when he is part of a competition. When he is inside the group of engineers, he becomes very comfortable. He is the first one to say: How can I improve?”
“When he came to Ferrari, he said to me things I could not understand. Like: I am not a good driver in the wet. I am not good in Hockenheim. I am not good (in this and that)… And I was like, What? I thought you were better than this. He was very open.”
“The process of being humble, of acknowledging the gap to perfection, is a strong characteristic of his, which I can understand from outside may not be perceivable. But within the entourage, the team, it is actually quite developed. Through the years, he has worked on these weaker characteristics.”
“The essence of his qualities is that he is very complete. You struggle to find a weak point, basically, in terms of high-level skills. The technical preparation in terms of driving. The ability to cope with a variety of situations. Intelligence - just capacity to understand the situation while he is in or out of the car.”
Massimo Rivola ex Ferrari Sporting Director just said that Fernando made them "feel like idiots" at times because he could see beyond when they couldn't. He was supposed to be doing his job and the engineers were supposed to plan and strategize but often Alonso had to intervene. He would be doing things they were still figuring out. He also added that Fernando is one of those drivers who teach you a lot.
Fernando Alonso is a sad tragedy in F1. His talent and abilities deserved more.

He was simply unlucky with his cars after being champion, but to his great credit he doggedly stuck it out with Ferrari and McLaren whilst always giving his all, lap after lap after lap. Lesser mortals would have been broken.

Nigel Roebuck is by some margin the finest living motor sport journalist. I don't think I have ever disagreed with any sentiment or opinion that he has expressed in the 50+ years I have been following F1. He freely admits that it is the human element of the sport, not the technical aspect, that motivates and intrigues him and this comes across very strongly in his far too rare interviews as well as in his copious articles, race reports and books. This video is a fine example of why he does what he does and why he does it so well. Clearly a huge fan of Alonso, as I am.
One gripe: why oh why does it seem to be compulsory these days to have background music to any video? It adds nothing and in this case it is nothing but a distraction. Did you notice how the interview improved the moment there were any gaps in the music?

@Valentino Raikkonen Let's review his history shall we.
      He's racist.
Had Hamilton's number on his phone under nigga.
That was discovered when he lost his phone in the paddock and whoever found it went through his contacts.
He ended Piquet Jnr's F1 career when he and Briatore had him crash so Alonso could pit in front of everyone else.
He tried to blackmail Ron Dennis into giving him preferential treatment over Hamilton otherwise he would go and tell the FIA about McLaren having Ferrari documents. Ron went straight to them himself.
He's such a talented driver that he continually demands his team mate to let him past.
EVEN WHEN MASSA WAS LEADING THE RACE ALMOST A YEAR TO THE DAY AFTER HIS ACCIDENT!
AND every team he has left he has slagged off in the press.
The guy is a total prick!

I love that - "LITTLE VICTORIES" Good for every day life. Good to have Alonso back. He was the best. I just wished that he could have sucked it up in 2007 with McLaren and Hamilton's rookie year. He never really recovered after that and always was in a team suffering from a low ebb. Even though he was getting the best out of the car it wasn't going to win a championship especially with Hamilton sitting in the best car on the grid. Was a shame and a waste. Alonso should have been at least a 4 times champion.

  • @MrRawnerves

Alonso is a snake in the grass ready to strike at a moment’s notice. People seem to forget the Nigel Stepney Ferrari and Mc Claren spy gate. Alonso was in on the information that was stolen from Ferrari. Also on the weekend of the Hungarian Grand Prix on the last day of qualifying he held Lewis in the pit lane for more than 30 seconds so Lewis wouldn’t have a chance to qualify which he was not able to because he ran out of time. Alonso knew that and did it on purpose so his rookie team mate who was ahead of him on points would not have a chance . The FIA noticed it and even do he got pole on that race he was penalized and moved down to six place for the start of the race. Alonso is the type of person willing to lied, cheat or steal in order to win. Those are not champion values, those are thugs values. And everyone here speaks of him like some kind of hero , best of the best, please...

Plus, say what you want, but I believe he was aware of the plan at Singapore when the "crash" brought out the SC etc...
That demeans his legacy in my mind.
Plus, he should have won at least one championship at Ferrari between 2010 and 2013, when Vettel was winning everything at Red Bull, but he was simply beaten by a better man on track.

I think Alonso is a great driver but not the best ever. In f1 it’s as much about politics as it is about racing. He failed in the team politics. Roebuck is woefully sentimental and confusing a resemblance to Castellotti, with sharing similar driving traits.
The fact is, when a rookie challenged Alonso, he crumbled, and decided to drag the team down with him.
