    Glass is the way to go. I put mine on top of a TV stand that has casters on the legs. Got it for $3 at a thrift store. Perfect height when I'm sitting and painting. Instead of painting the underside white. I taped medium gray paper to it. Gives a nice neutral background to mix colors against.

    Great idea to use laminate in case it breaks. I'm going to be toning the back of mine to a medium tone, but then will cover it with laminate, which I hadn't thought of. For brush holders, I prefer mine to hold them either horizontally or bristle side down to prevent paint from collecting near or under the ferrels.

    I have a glass palette I made and just coated the back side with gesso. I also take plastic wrap and lay over the palate paint if I have to leave it alone for a day or so and come back and lift the plastic off the paint and it stays wet longer this way.

      Linda Foote Have been looking at Stay Wet palettes. But I prefer glass. Some plastic wrap keeps it wet is good to know it works just as well! With the ease of the glass.

    I just started painting and I have been using the back of a glass cutting board but it's only about 11 by 14" so I'm definitely gonna go to the glass store this week and make a nice palette that I don't have to worry about cleaning every single time I changed a color.

    That is one amazing, large palette! I love it. I use an old, microwave turntable but it's rectangular. Found it at a thrift store for $3.00, not huge but works for my needs. Cheers!

    I use a glass palette but with inserts of various colour sheets underneath that match the overall canvas/ board base colour of the underpainting. I mix the colour on the table palette , then transfer it to a small glass palette mounted vertically...this allows for better colour matching as the palette is in the same plane as your picture; you don't fuck your values up when you work vertically, also you don't crane your neck , looking down all the time....see the parallel palette prototype by David Kassan

    Thanks for this! I've been meaning to make myself a glass palette for ages, but wasn't sure how to go about it exactly. Also like the idea some other people who commented have, about taping grey paper underneath, or I suppose you could tint gesso? I love to work especially on clear primed linen, so it would simulate the neutral ground, and give me a better idea of how the colours would work in the painting. Great idea! Thanks again!

    Just for your own info. Tempered glass is sized at the factory. Can't cut tempered glass. Plate glass with the clear laminate will work just fine. If broken the laminate will hold together a little bit. Yep "seam" the edges.

    Hi Michael, thought you might like to know that there is a method of applying laminate without ant bubbles, this is known as 'floating'. all you need is water with a little dish soap in, spread the soapy water onto the glass and apply the laminate, then just use a plastic or rubber squeegee to squeegee out as much water as possible, then leave to dry, the adhesive on the laminate takes over and sticks to the glass, then simply trim the edges. Hope this helps :-)

      +Paul Murphy That's a great tip. I wish that I had read it 10 minutes having followed Michael's excellent tutorial on making a glass palette. Thankfully, I appear to have avoided any bubbles by laying the laminate at an angle, slowing massaging bubbles out with my thumb laying it cm by cm at a time. The floating approach sounds far superior.

    Yes, this is terrific. Love the brush holder too....tho i would just wait for the brushes to dry then stick them back up in the hole. The glass palette would work equally well with acrylic and gouache. Wonderful set up and great video, thanks!

    I love the 'brush holder' in the background of the video! It looks like a plain 2x4 block of wood, with holes drilled for the brushes - so simple! But, is it ok to stick the brushes up like that to dry? I always heard it was bad to let any liquid flow up the handle, into the ferrule..?

    Hi Robert,
    I usually don't use my brushes more than 4-5 paintings so the brushes normally don't have time to go bad. You are right about the ferrules collecting dry paint and going bad.

    I 'paint' one side of the glass with gesso that I have tinted with a mid-value acrylic paint. When dry, I cover that with the clear transparent shelving plastic.An alternative to the shelving is to lay strips of transparent packing tape over the gesso.

  • @Certified_Art_Teacher
    @Certified_Art_Teacher 6 лет назад

    I use a glass shelving from a refrigerator as a table palette. What I done was paint the back of it with a neutral gray and covered the paint with masking tape to avoid scratching the underside. I then tapped the edges with masking tape This could be an alternative to tempered glass. I used gray because it is easier to identify color correctness. My palette may not be right for everyone but it works well for me. The down side is that it is able to get scratches easily so I may have to replace it soon. Thank you for the tutorial though. Good job.

    • @Allie-ck2lj
      @Allie-ck2lj Год назад

      Why not paint the back with neutral gray, let it dry, then cover it with the sheet of protective plastic. If I could find some grey paper, I might just use that on the back instead of paint.

  • @bertrv6

    You could use plexiglas, will do the same, advantage is non breakable, that is if it falls, nothing. You can have cut the size you want, you can even sand the edges with a small block of wood and sand paper black
    kind. You can buy this at any hardware store

    • @Allie-ck2lj
      @Allie-ck2lj Год назад

      I use glass and plexiglas and prefer glass because the plexigla is easily scratch when scraping. I never have to worry about scraping glass and it cleans up nice and clear.

    I have a question. Over time my glass palette has developed scratches that dull my painting knives. Is there any way to fill these? I don't know of a liquid glass product that would fill in the scratches but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. Do you know of a remedy for the scratches?
    I absolutely love my glass palette after using various other types such as disposable (don't like these at all) & traditional wooden palettes. At one time I even used paper plates which were the worst.
    The scratches don't make it unusable, by any means, but it's not great for my painting or palette knives so if you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
    Thank you for such helpful videos.

    so I don't really need the glass, but only the plastic coating?

    • @devilmonkey471
      @devilmonkey471 10 лет назад

      You really only need the glass, you have it backwards. The plastic lets you paint the backside in a way that you can peel off later. You could instead just paint the back of the glass, or leave it blank and set it on a solid coloured table or whatever you want to do.
      No, you cannot use just a flimsy strip of plastic laminate as your palette..
