It is time to once again look at a nostalgic old car from General Motors, a 1985 Vauxhall Nova 1.2 L. Sadly, I was not able to drive it today, but I was able to have a look at the amazing red interior and also the early Family I engine, minus a distributor. Hopefully, I will be able to have a look this again when it is working properly!

The design is fantastic, definitely up there with the Peugeot 205 of the same age.
In the context of 1982/3, I think that it would have been relatively conservative, but still very modern. Much more modern than a Chevette, for example. By 1993, it was horrendously dated, of course, but still selling well. Vauxhall again had an updated car ready at just the right time, of course, and the Corsa B was absolutely the right car at the right time once again.
My sister owned a 1984 B reg Nova 1.2 Swing in white with a brown interior. She bought it in 1996 with 47,000 miles. It was a lovely car but she paid what I felt was a lot of money for it at the time (£2,150 I think) . I took a drive in it once and I was surprised about how quick it was. An excellent car underneath it's fairly plain appearance.
That does sound like quite a lot of money in 1996, sir! The appearance is a bit plain in comparison with a 205, but a much more advanced car underneath than a Mark II Fiesta, and available with some much better engines. These weigh nothing, so I am not surprised it felt quick!
Had a gold one on a C reg, ‘Champagne Supernova’ as it was referred to.. very heavy clutch and a remarkable all brown interior lol
Oh sir, where have we heard that one before? Certainly appropriate, however! Yes, I think you could get a brown or green interior as well...
My one wish is to drive and one day own a Nova. Hands down my favourite car
Well sir, maybe I should ask nicely on your behalf, as this one will be back on the road at some point, although not sure when it will be for sale.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting I wouldn't say no! I've had one on the cards for my channel for sometime but it's off the road still at the moment. I didn't realise there was less than 1000 left!
Its own unique style for 1983 .
Loads of choices hatchbacks, saloons, warm sporty ones and a very hot one.
Base trim, mid range trims and some very well equipped and comfortable LUX versions.
Very smooth torquey engines, a 1.2 or 1.3 5 door LUX is a lovely vehicle.
Parts and servicing for pennies.
Much more solid than a Fiesta or a Metro.
Yes, a bit of a newer design than either, much more advanced engines, but I still enjoyed driving both that Mark II Fiesta and both the Metros. You are right, I would love to try a Nova Saloon, as my father-in-law used to have done. The Luxe+ models were the nicest, probably with the later 1.4 engine.
That interior is superb! Loving the 1 strut tailgate - I cant remember seeing one before?! Looks like a nice collection of cars the owner has.
Yes, well, the Escort is for sale, it appeared on No Budget Reviews last year. The Puma, well, we may have a video on that as well. One strut tailgates are on things like the Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 clones.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting you learn something new every day - a car with a one strut tailgate is now on my bucket list…😉
Very nice Sir, great that the owner has saved this. L spec quite posh with the fully trimmed boot & quartz clock. Great 1.2 ohc engine, weird the mk2 Astra 1.2 had the ohv. The hatch has flared front wings, whereas the saloon has round wheel arches
Yes sir, posh with a quartz clock, internally adjustable mirrors and fully carpeted boot, as well as the Family I engine rather than the Opel OHV. The Mark II Astra also used the OHV in the base model, but those are rare. Both that and the Nova also shared the 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6 Family I engines.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting what I meant was, I wonder why the Nova had the 1.2 Overhead Cam engine, whereas the Astra 1.2 was the older Overhead Valve engine, I had an mk2 Astra 1.2 merit OHV for 6 months, made a nice profit on it
Great little Car was the Nova, these early ones seem to be coming out of the woodwork, as I know Dougie at Once Driven Forever Smitten RUclips Channel is working on one. Have to say that interior is lovely in that colour.
Yes sir, we know about that other Scottish-based channel. Seems to have a lot of subscribers now! Glad you enjoyed this one, the red interior is something else.
It's so nice to see such an origional example and that red interior, wow.
As you well know our generation modified and subsequently crashed so many of these back in the late 90''s/early 2000's.
The origional radio and steel wheels look great though I did spy the period correct alloys on the floor.
My friend has a white GTE.
As soon as I saw that Escort I did wonder if it was the one you featured previously. It's nice to see the Puma as well.
Yes, the alloy wheels are off an SR or a GTE, I think. Oh gosh, finding an unmodified and undamaged Nova these days is very difficult for the reasons that you have mentioned. Typical Vauxhall/Opel interior of the period, and none the worse for it. The Escort most certainly is the one we had on No Budget Reviews, and the Puma has just gone up on the channel last night as well!
Bringing back fond memories, thank you Mr Lloyd, really enjoying this nova review.
Thank you, sir! Glad you enjoyed the Nova, it also brought back memories for me, as some friends of my mother had a string of them.
Nova, the car my instructor had a 1.2 LUX and I learnt and passed my test in it, I think it was one of the last ones, K plate of memory serves, also Daniel had a 1.3 SR with GSi kit a C plate, fun cars, I regularly raced GTE’s in Orions, fun times.
Yes, the Nova was a popular driving school car back in the day, as was the Corsa successor. K registration was the last of the standard Novas, although the GSis continued a little bit later onto an L registration. The fast ones were a bit of fun, I gather, sir....
I think part of that Nova lives on Ben! It was the boy racers car of choice around here much more so than Metro or Fiesta. Unfortunately l remember many being crashed some tragically so.😥
@@David_H-73 yes, it does, especially with the Max Power styling cars re-emerging
My 1st car was a Nova 1.2L in dark brown colour, brown seats and brown dashboard, loved that car 💙😎
Thank you for watching, John! This early Nova was a delight, I am hoping to have a go in a different one quite soon.
My friends at college had these cars in the early 2000s one had a 3 Door and another had a 5 door. When you turned the heater on it sounded like you were in a plane.
Yes, that's the one! Still around in quite considerable numbers 20 years ago, and popular as first cars. Not the quietest, clearly!
You also have two washer fluid pumps, extravagant.
Absolute and utter decadence!
I like this very much!
I believe they called the interior colour "terracotta", I heard and saw about a similar Nova on another one of my UK 🇬🇧 channels (he is from Scotland 🏴!).
Fan switch rear defroster knob, very familiar, even to myself here in the US (used on the Pontiac LeMans, which was the Astra)!
I do hope in the future you will be able to take this for a test drive and further analysis!
Thank you very much Joseph!
Yes sir, the Mark Astra II (on which the Pontiac LeMans was based) had a very similar dashboard to this, and some of the same engines, gearboxes and running gear from what I understand. We know about the other Scottish based channel, sir... Hopefully, Jonathan will get this sorted, and then we can go for a little spin!
Ay 🏴 Vauxhall Nut. 😂 Completely Smitten.
A bloke at work bought a new Nova 4 door saloon 1.3GL in red , I wanted that car , at the time I drove a Viva .
Oh sir, I would like to try a Nova Saloon if possible.
Check out the terracotta interior. What a beauty. I've just been watching the Once Driven Forever Smitten channel where a couple of Nova Ls, albeit slightly less standard ones, have featured . Great to see an unmolested one with potential
Ah yes, sir! The other Scottish channel... We are most familiar with that one! This low mileage car will be resprayed and sorted out, fortunately, Jonathan take care of her, no doubt.
I remember these well, that red interior is so if it’s time. I did own a red one for 48 hours before turning a small profit selling it to my cousin…. It’s staggering how few are left and how much they’re worth now, especially the SR. You need to film a drive when it’s back on the road.
Yes sir, quite a blast from the past! Very low numbers now, they were almost the ultimate disposable car for a whole generation of younger drivers, which didn't help. Jonathan said I could come back later...
Thanks for this video! 🙂 We never had these in New Zealand, Holden instead sold the Holden Barina, which at the time was a rebadged Suzuki Swift - one of the few genuinely good Holdens...
No problem at all, sir! Yes, there were various Barinas over the years, weren't there? The Corsa C based one was one of the best ones, from what I understand...
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes! The first two were Suzukis, after the mid-1990s European GM Corsas, last ones were Daewoos. Yes the last European Barinas were quite nice actually. I remember having a yellow Corgi model of this Nova. Funny how that name was used by Chevrolet on a Muscle Car!
My sister's first car was a Nova post 90's facelift. Also Silver & the interior was like a Bluish Grey.
Yes, the facelifted dashboard was quite different from this. By that time, the interiors were a bit less brightly coloured too. Hope you enjoyed this video!
It's funny how different aspects of car design can affect my feelings. The interior I find very, how can I say, "friendly" and with an ambience that I find totally lacking in the drab "blackness" of many modern car interiors. Even the little quartz clock is charming and the speedometer and other dials are, too.
Yes, one thing I don't like about modern cars is that so many of them are universally black. I wanted the beige leather interior on our SsangYong, but I couldn't find one with a beige interior in our price range. At the time they made this Nova, they made several interior colours, even on a cheap little car like this, complete with quartz clock!
Nice to see the differences between this Nova and my 86 Antibes 😁 mine doesn't have the side vents on the dash! The GSi i had in 2004 was a completely different animal though 😂
Thank you, Ricky! That Antibes must be an exceptionally rare car. GSis had about double the power of these, I think!
Hello My friend , I just love the colour of that interior , Wish we had them like that now ! don't you ?
I think the owner got this for the interior alone....
Lovely car, deserves some money to patch it up.
Yes sir! The owner is going to lavish some on her, she definitely deserves it. Glad you enjoyed it.
Had one of these in White H reg but after hiring one of the newer Mk.2's in Portugal which I wanted but couldn't afford at the time I didn't want my Mk1 anymore and sold it for a Corrolla.
Oh really? The Corollas were a bit bigger at the time. Which generation of those did you have? It's funny how a facelifted car can feel quite different from the original.
Mister Agent Lloyd please do something about the Gasoline prices! Safe us car Peoples!
What, like an undercover visit to Moscow, sir?
@@lloydvehicleconsulting that would be an easy job for you sir. Transporting you and the Rover over there for the mission.
My first car😜
Yes, these were very popular back in the day, weren't they? I actually drove a Nova Saloon on Sensible Secondhand Classics a few months later.
ahh, the nova, who could forget the nova, havent seen one for a while though. I think those alloys are from a gte spec.
You may be right, sir! I do like those wheels very much... I can't believe how rare these are now.
Considering two struts still become a pesky nuisance when they are aging - yes why not have just one strut.
Yes, good old strut problems... Less of an issue here, clearly, although you do have to remember not to lock the keys in the car!
Such a shame coloured interiors are a thing of the past, also
from memory I'm sure the steering wheel was offset to the left and not central to the driver
It's quite possibly that this has an offset wheel, sir! I have driven a few cars like that before. Very much an interior colour of the period, I think they did brown and green as well.
An Ex Girlfriends sister had a white F reg SR one
Those did look quite smart, sir, didn't they?
