I miss my Open Studio subscription so much 😢 Hit some financial difficulties in 2023 and had to drop out. I hadn't seen the progress I got from OS in my professional career since my initial time in lessons. Thanks as always. I know nobody's waiting, but I'll be back some day haha.
Can't say enough about how wonderful these are! Whether the material is within my reach or way over my head, I always get so much from watching, trying, and hearing what Adam has to say.
That Dominant 7#9b13 chord is a COMMON chord used in the black church in the 5th degree of any key we're in. Like a lot of chords, I've used that chord for YEARS, but I never knew the name of it. Thanks again for ALL of your videos!
By the way, the drummer for James Brown's Cold Sweat was the late Clyde Stubblefield. That song made the Top 10 on WABC and was like nothing else I'd ever heard, and I scrambled out to buy the 45. As a teenage drummer, I worked on mastering that beat during the summer of 1967. I don't remember how long it took to gain the hand and foot independence it required -- it seems like all summer, but was probably less, and I practiced maybe 4-5 hours a week. Learning it transformed my playing skills, and earned me a place in the sharpest, hippest marching band in Bergen County at Dwight Morrow High School in 1969. Our drum section was the best in the NYC Metro area, hands down, We even had an Eisley Brother. Good memories. Adam, if you can find an isolated track from the original performance, it will sound so much tighter than the one you're using. Clyde's accents were what put the funk in funky. Thanks for the memory. 💙💙💙💙 VOTE! 💙💙💙💙 🧙🏼♂️👏🏽
Thanks Adam, for the energy and positivity you bring to these sessions every time! Love playing along, learning so much as a bass player who plays “arranger’s piano.” Cheers from Las Vegas. (Yes, *that* JF :-) )
Always, always appreciate you and Peter and what you do, thank you. You guys are truly inspiring to me and have taken my music to new levels. I wish I would have found this type of teaching 10 yrs ago.❤
Adam the quality of your teaching is the best I have ever seen. Lifelong learners are the most amazing teachers. Thank you for all the incredible content. Edit: that minor 11 voicing!!!
Your explanations are so helpful! I've been studying from Mark Levine's Jazz Piano Book for years, and you've clarified much that content for me here. The malleability of the dominant chords has always somewhat perplexed me. I love that you explained why 6/9 chords are useful. I learned a lot from watching you comp along with the drummer and improvise with your left hand support. Peter Gabriel!
Hey, thank you as always for the many good pieces of information. My question: Why would you in the description of a chord label a note by the number of its scale degree rather than what BCM calls tension based on the circumstance of a chord tone 7th occurring or not occurring in the chord? Would you call the notes (bottom to top) C, Db, E, G: C b2? I would refer to them as C b9.
Adam holding the coffee cup over the keyboard upsets me. With electronic keyboards, the worst that can happen is a few thousand dollars of damage, but if it were a real piano, the water damage from a spill can be catastrophic. Treat all liquids around pianos like a loaded gun. Spills happen.
@AdamFontenet I just don't like that he's setting a bad example. Since pianos are often a shared instrument, other people knowing how to treat them well is important. Maybe saying it upsets me is putting it strongly, but I wish he wouldn't do it. No hate.
@AdamFontenet It's not really about whether it upsets me. I just don't want young pianists to think that it's acceptable to hover drinks over PUBLIC pianos. Do what you want at home, but don't put any sort of drink on a piano that you don't own.

The minor 11 voicing is in the Don Grolnick tune “Pools” which is a great tune to learn cool voicings.

The PDF has missing ledger lines - and color PDFs do not printout. Coloring notes is not a good idea. But otherwise, thanks for your great stuff!
