When they were taking about the rasp and considering whether she was sick I literally yelled out loud, in my house by myself “NAH GURL, THAT’S SOUL!!!”
Definitely not sure about that. She has very admirable technique but let's keep in mind that she smokes heavily (stated so herself, since her Mom passed).
The way she achieves that echo effect at the end when she sings the "we don't have to rush so hard" is not by controlling her vowels as you say, it's a simple technique using the diaphragm to control the amount of air being pushed out by contracting it, kinda like volume control, hence you see her rocking back and forth on these parts. She also doesn't add vibrato when she sings those lines, so try singing it again sir, but with no vibrato. She really keeps it simple. I think sometimes as vocal or music teachers, one tends to over-analyse. Also because her genre is such a fusion of folk and jazz, it's hard to pin down her style. This woman just has a unique tone and can manipulate her voice in so many ways. No amount of technical vocal jargon can explain the gift that IS Yebba!
Ive been a fan of Yebba's for what seems like forever. Her voice is so unique and fits her music so so well it never ceases to blow me away. And yes, that raspy-ness in her voice is just her, she's not sick i think. It pops up from time to time but never sounds awkward or anything. 👌🏾💯💯
Cool reaction! Can’t wait to see the rest. And fyi: most of this band worked with yebba on her debut album which just dropped ‘Dawn’. They’re all elite musicians! Yebba’s my favourite singer of our time, totally unparalleled!!
Omg I’m actually gonna cry thinking you haven’t seen her performance MY MIND, you will look at music completely differently after that single performance I would give my life to see ur reaction to it 😭😭😭😭😭 ITs truly the best live performance on youtube. Please 😭
Y’all she’s a dramatic coloratura. She’s got a rich lower tone and agility on the highs. She would have killed queen of the night or lakme And I bet she can sing bel canto. So she sings and writes to her strengths, agility and range. Her runs stretch your heart. 💗
They haven’t watched MY MIND yet how can we let em live their life without hearing one of the most beautiful songs ever vocally lyrically everything! 😭😭
Literally same, I'm like.. did they ever watch the rest??😭😭 It's so good to not have done so! I wonder if the footage was lost or something, or maybe they posted it on patreon?
Overall a very beautiful arrangement. Extreme talent to be a performer and managing the sound around her at the same time. Just starting to listen to Yebba. Thanks for reacting!
I know you guys are very good vocalists and vocal coaches , But Yebba is a ridiculous vocalist, she is not medically sick at all , She is probably one of the best vocalist around today, She is not even in the same category of singers we hear today , she is so phenomenal and unique, and powerful singer , with perfect pitch , and has more control of her voice then most singers that are popular today, She does what she wants with her voice and that hoarse and scratchy sound you heard was purposely done , she is definitely not sick , Because the clarity you’re hearing on the other parts of the song are just incredible, The only thing that is sick is her singing . Singers should be scared of her and learn from her .
idk who said it, but “Yebba is your favorite singer’s favorite singer” and i am so happy she is finally getting her time to SHINE ✨ Her new album is spectacular. everything she does is immaculate. You should definitely check out more Yebba!
The girl has CONTROL! I was surprised that you didn't talk about that big run that she does with the background singers, is just magnificent, so precise, one of the most beautiful ones that I listened to in my life. One other impressive thing is that this music has such a small range of notes, but a HUGE range of textures and contrast, so beautiful. When I watched "My mind", that is the big one from her, I also thought about being sick or hurting her voice, but she just CAN. This version (this acoustic actually) is way better than the album that I got frustrated that wasn't like this...
Love this reaction. I have never heard anyone compare her voice to a trumpet but that is SPOT ON! She never ceases to amaze me. Moves me to tears every time. Stunning.
the breathiness and scratchiness in the beginning is intentional, its her being gravelly with her voice, I think to create an edginess to the song, because its quite a somber, dark, emotional and intense song. She actually does it throughout the song. Her vocal ability and range it on another level. Once in a lifetime voice, like Whitney.
You guys ABSOLUTELY have to watch her sing "Gravity" with Clark Beckham or her performance of her original "My Mind." They honestly make me sweat they're so good lol
I love that you both did this reaction, I hope you continue to do the rest, but I particular would love a reaction for the third song of that tiny desk concert, “All I ever wanted.” As far as her “raspy” bits in this song. This is a stylistic choice. She has done so in her previous live performances and it’s not her being sick. She is able to show a subtle grit to her, that I feel like not everybody could pick up on unless you follow her music/career/vocals.
Once u discover yebba she's gonna be stuck in ur head for a very long time. I just dircovered her 4 months ago and up till now her songs are the most played songs on my spotify.
I've been following her for quite some time since PJ put out his rendition of How Deep Is Your Love by the Bee Gees featuring YEBBA. Her pitch, control, and range is ridiculously great! Love her voice!
The fact that this Tiny Desk was a long time coming is a testament to how she views quality. She could have done some half-baked one years ago but she made this absolute work of art. Thank you to Yebba and her crew for this absolute jewel. My ears have been blessed.
a quick shoutout to you guys who are really actively listening to her work and actually have the language and experience to back up what you are saying! just subbed!
I think you two should listen to more gospel music. Yebba grew up in West Memphis, AR in the church & studied ppl like The Clark Sisters. You can hear the intentional rasp & grit that comes from studying Black ppl in church & vocal nuances like those of Dorinda Clark. Yes, she does smoke but it adds more texture. She was much heavier (weight) & started getting healthier and exercising which improved her voice overall. We are associates so you have go know what she’s been through to understand her approach to the lyrics & notes, lots of pain & sadness there.
Holy cow!!! Everything you guys pointed out. Yes! The blending of the voices! Wow! Loved, loved this. Nice way to end the day. It’s 12:10 AM in NYC. 😆😆
First time I’ve heard of Yebba. I like her subtraction & addition of syllables in very unique places. So many chord changes. I also like when they are all in unison and the background cuts out early to leave Yebba on her own note.
I’m a little late to the game, but still want to tell you what a great reaction that was. Very insightful about her “brassy” tone that makes her stand out. Never heard a voice compared to a trumpet! But you’re not wrong.
One song Yebba sang which blew up was a phone recording of her singing an excerpt from “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, which caught the attention of Jacob Collier, then became part of one of his greatest creations from his most recent album, Djesse, Vol. 4. Please consider reacting to more Jacob Collier songs
Love this reaction video. Did you guys ever watch her rendition of Louie Bag from Electric Lady Lounge? 🤯 She does that crazy effect-but-not-an-effect thing in the middle of the song where her voice doesn't come from a register but from heaven. Yet she's hardly opening her mouth and is effortless AF. I'm perpetually in awe of Yebba.
YEBBA is a master of her instrument. My ears are very happy when she sings. Please react to Evergreen and the Sofar performance of My Mind. Looking forward to the rest of the Tiny Desk reaction.
Thanks for the videos, I definitely learned some new interesting things from you guys, and enjoy the "let's listen to this detail" approach. About the occasional scratchiness, you made a good guess about stylistic choice. Not only does she have a loaded arsenal of voices and techniques, she also utilizes sounds that we normally consider ugly or faulty (pointed out by Sam - another vocal coach), and able to use them to convey the emotion of the song. She did it a lot more in earlier performances, whilst this one is more refined, I think since she wanted to display her growth and maturity.
It was definitely a technique to use the raspyness that you described as 'voice fatigue'. I mean come on, as vocal coaches surely that's blindingly obvious
Those are mixers for artistes so that they can adjust their in ear monitors accordingly. It’s not for effects just for volumes basically. She didn’t use any effect for that part. Her voice is just angelic 🥺❤️🩹
YEBBA is a major contender for one of the best vocal technicians of all time. It's incredible.
1 name - Lelah Hathaway. She IS the vocal technician/tactical of all time beloved. Yebba is really dope though.
@@AudacityOf super agree! LOVE Lelah. Artists like her and Yebba deserve so much more
Yebba sounds the way she does because of the gospel artists she grew up listening to. Gospel singers are a different bread
@@Official.tadiwa and because she grew up in a black church, her dad is a preacher
@@Official.tadiwa hehe "bread"
Fun fact: Her father was a southern preacher and her mother was a voice teacher. She grew up singing in church. 🙂
Actually sounds like, I was sure about that😍
Makes sense why she sounds like a sister
Those BG singers tho! The entire time i was watching the concert i was enthralled w the way they were accompanying Yebba. Give them their coins! Yes
Faaacts!!!
This!! They were strong and blended beautifully together
Yuuuuuup
When they were taking about the rasp and considering whether she was sick I literally yelled out loud, in my house by myself “NAH GURL, THAT’S SOUL!!!”
That’s right!
Definitely not sick. It’s an intentional rasp she does to add to the various textures of her unique voice 👌🏾
Technically. Not sick at all 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Thank you.
It's the most tasteful rasp in the business as far as I'm concerned. Adds so much color to her voice.
Definitely not sure about that. She has very admirable technique but let's keep in mind that she smokes heavily (stated so herself, since her Mom passed).
Can hear these kids are pop singers/"vocal teacher"..even when he tries to mimick the echo at the end, he gets it all wrong 🤣
She actually originally move to New York with intentions of singing background vocals so that might be why she has a respect for background vocals
Her voice can get raspy….she’s not sick….its part of her unique tone
Exactly!!!
Amen! Louder for the kids in the back!
Ive been a fan of Yebba's for what seems like forever. Her voice is so unique and fits her music so so well it never ceases to blow me away.
And yes, that raspy-ness in her voice is just her, she's not sick i think. It pops up from time to time but never sounds awkward or anything. 👌🏾💯💯
Elle n'est pas malade c'est bien ça voix qui est comme ça est j'adore
@@mehdimetisse77 je suis du même avis!
OMG PLEASE MORE FROM THIS CONCER, The reaction was so cool
Cool reaction! Can’t wait to see the rest. And fyi: most of this band worked with yebba on her debut album which just dropped ‘Dawn’. They’re all elite musicians! Yebba’s my favourite singer of our time, totally unparalleled!!
Right there with you!
Her rasp is natural. And it's magnificent. She just sings from her heart. And it's flipping amazing.
Omg I’m actually gonna cry thinking you haven’t seen her performance MY MIND, you will look at music completely differently after that single performance
I would give my life to see ur reaction to it 😭😭😭😭😭 ITs truly the best live performance on youtube. Please 😭
Yebba released the best album of 2021. She is amazing. I'm speechless.
That concert was so great….The back-up vocals, the musician and Yebba herself were all so great
It cracks me up to know that the sound we grew up with in RNB is a new sound to most.
My reaction exactly
Yuuuuuuuuup. So many things I've heard as a child in church just blowing people away.
@@devildham I mean Yebba grew up in church so it makes sense that she sounds like that
@@Cookie-Baby That's my point.
She uses her full range in the way a traditional R&B singer would use a run. It’s genius!
The way here falsetto breaks into husk is outstanding
Melia is literally me when i first saw this. I was OBSESSED with the backup singers
Obsessed!
Yebba gives EVERYTHING you don't even know you need. #OBSESSED
Yebba - My mind, is also amazing, so emotional
Y’all she’s a dramatic coloratura.
She’s got a rich lower tone and agility on the highs.

Now for request: Please react to the rest of hers because the rest will be just as insane! and also Jazmine Sullivan tiny desk PLEASEEE
They haven’t watched MY MIND yet how can we let em live their life without hearing one of the most beautiful songs ever vocally lyrically everything! 😭😭
Agreed! Distance was my fave from her Tiny Desk and Jazmine Sullivan was just CHEFS KISS.

been listening to yebba forever she has a natural rasp and insane soul to her voice, my girl grew up singing in the church
This girl is multi-textured and cultured with that voice. The rasp is so in.
Her new album is on repeat!! I just can't get enough. You two should listen to the rest of the performance 👏🏾
Same!!! I've followed her forever & am SO proud to be a fan right now! This album is incredible!
Yebba (aka Abbey) has such a wide range and amazing vocal dynamic. The growl (roughness in her voice) is intentional.
The scratches are deliberate listen to her entire Yebba- Tiny Desk performance , she’s amazing 🥺🥺
you know its good when you start to put the stank face on while listening !!! Yebba is a marvelous wonder,

Her song October sky and All I wanted from this performance are my favourites 🥺🥺🥺
Distance from YEBBA’s Tiny Desk next, please!!🤩
The "sick" part you caught is something she actually does intentionally in some of her videos, I think, for the raspy effect.

Loved this reaction! Would love to see your reaction to the rest of the TDC
Thanks for introducing great new music… she’s one to watch out for!!!
Hey! Are you going to do the other songs?!?!
Oh yeah and her background singers are lit
Why do I feel like you are underestimating Yebba?
I’d love to hear them sing…
Because they are! lol kids these days don't appreciate fine art.
The way y'all describe her voice as brassy or like a trumpet is so spot on. I've been trying to figure out why she sounds so unique and conspicuous.
Oh good my favorite Yebba song stand
Looking forward to part 2 AND if you could do "Boomerang" live performance - very different vocal performance - and the band is rocking!
