Milking Sheep Breeds - Which one is right for you?

- Sheep are a valuable part of many farming operations, but not all sheep are created equal. Some breeds are better suited for milking than others.
If you're looking to add dairy sheep to your farm, or if you're just curious about what the different breeds are like, then this video is for you. You'll learn about the 3 most popular milking sheep breeds and what makes them special.

You'll see what separates east friesian vs lacaune sheep, and why both breeds have fans... and how to decide if lacaune sheep milk is better for your climate, or if bringing East Friesian sheep to your homestead is more in line with your goals.
It's important to note that this video covers the three most optimized milking breeds:
* East Friesian sheep milk
* Lacaune milk sheep
* British milking sheep
There are plenty of people milking other breeds of sheep, from Katahdin sheep, to other mixes of sheep. The truth is that you can milk any sheep, because they all produce milk for their offspring.
It's just a matter of how much the sheep breed you choose has been bred to increase milk yields. If you're looking for the top of the line producers, then East Friesian sheep milk is probably the way to go.
If you plan to be milking sheep once a day, or having just one or two sheep milking by hand, then you can get away with any of the breeds mentioned in this video, and even mixes that aren't purebred.
One thing to note: all of these dairy sheep breeds are great for meat, and some are also great for wool, making them a good triple-purpose sheep breed.

Ooh yes, I think that's a great idea! There are so many other breeds that are worth exploring, these tend to be the most commonly available ones that people can look up near them. I'm going to do my best to find some more footage and do a follow-up sometime! :)
@@waykeeperfarmandnerdery oh I know, just teasing! I’ve read a little bit about what Icelandic owners say about their dairy qualities and I think there are some milky lines of Finn’s. So yes, I agree, like you said there are other breeds people sometimes use. Even clunns. I hope one day the assaf/awassi bloodlines are a little bit easier to come by!

Hi, thank you for this video. May I ask you hich of these breeds is the triple-attitude you are referring to in the description?
The first two are the triple purpose ones: East Friesians and British Milking Sheep, because they are great for milk, meat, and wool.
Lacaune has shorter wool, but still great for milk and eating - and if you get a mix of Lacaune with other breeds you could also get good wool as well. :)

We had British Milking Sheep with a bit of East Friesian mixed in.
There are places a few hours away that are starting to have purebreds for these different breeds, but for our purposes we aren't as focused on the specific breed as much as hardiness and temperament too. :)

It's hard for me to say since they were the first sheep we had and I don't have anything else to compare to personally. Right now we have some Lacaune sheep, alongside our British Milking Sheep and they seem to be holding up in a very similar way. I'll have more to report back on in a year or more perhaps?

Any idea about hair sheep that are great milkers?
I haven't personally milked them but plenty of people also milk Katahdins. You can milk any breed of sheep, but it's a matter of how much milk you'll get for your efforts. If you were to find some Katahdins that were extra prolific (like they lamb 3-4 sheep each) then they will likely be high milk producers, to feed their babies. :)
Holstein Fresian cattle are not as hardy, just like the East Fresian sheep. I believe it is true generally for any species... Think Cornish Cross chickens or Broad Breasted White turkeys.

How about valais blacknose sheep? 🐑 🤔 do they make good dairy sheep? I tried googling it but keep getting meat & wool
Sorry I don't have any experience with that breed. If you're not finding much about it, it's possible that it's just not bred to improve milking.
Which sheep breed is good for Indian climate for milk purpose
I don't know what breeds you have available locally. A good idea would be to find someone who has dairy sheep or farms that focus on sheep and see if they have any ideas for local options. Good luck!
