I think the secret to youtube is to enjoy what you're doing and if it's successful and makes a few quid, then that's great! I really enjoy your style of videos - very real and genuine content!

I’ve been doing the RUclips thing for about 4 years now, and I get enough positive feedback to know that people like my content. Obviously I get negative feedback too, so does everyone I watch, so nothing different there. I have failed to get any serious traction, and it’s getting harder to do with every upload. I like your content and presentation style and I like the fact that you aren’t claiming this to be a magic bullet. I’ve tried doing so much “best practice” stuff I couldn’t even list it all. Ultimately if enough people don’t like your content then that as they say, is that.
Just keep rolling with info that people will find useful in a niche sense. I found some of my videos sat dormant and then inexplicably were recommended on people's YT home page and went crazy. I upload little (no uploads in over a year now), I go for producing info that I perceive is difficult to get elsewhere in any useful sense (if that makes sense). At this stage I need to make more videos to gain more traction, balancing the risk of losing people who've tuned in based on particular interests.
Wheres the angry vase? Did you cash out your RUclips money to buy a plant?

Becoming a content creator has been a very humbling experience
Years ago when I was a student I briefly worked on BBC local radio (it didn't broadcast its own content on a Sunday, usually just rebroadcasting sport commentary so they gave a load of students the run of the studio to do their own show). One day our presenter was feeling unwell and mentioned this during the programme several times. At the end of show debrief the professional BBC producer told her in no uncertain terms that no-one cared how ill or tired she was and that she wasn't to do it again. There may be a lesson for you there. Or maybe times have changed since the early 90s.
You're definitely not supposed to reveal that sort of thing on TV. But I think you can get away with it on RUclips
I do a lot of repair videos, showing how to diagnose and fix problems, I wish my growth rate was that good !

Hello, Jake, Thank you for sharing information. Tough world…Every content creator’s problem…😭 Creators have to understand new policy too and adapt when things change. I think that a creator has some degree of responsibility with regard to their audience, to change, to give them something different, to give them something new each time, to give them something that they are not expecting, to try to surprise them and not bore them.

I approach RUclips differently. I LOVE the process and have always produced creative content for my tastes. If I get views, great. Producing videos keeps me sane.

Jet lagged, I hate the way it makes one feel. Two or three good nights sleep, than one is back to oneself. Well, my prayer was answer and you arrived home safely. Thank you Lord. I do enjoy watching your video as it is refreshing to see, and listen to a gentleman. So many today just butcher the English language. Which you probably noticed while in American. Say what is you opinion of the difference between America and English TV? Might make an interesting video. As always thank you for the information.

But surely RUclips's priority is ad revenue, suggesting that watch-time should be secondary to clicks.
Skipping thru lots of vids without watching any properly equals lots more ads seen than same time spent watching 2 to 3 all the way through. I can only imagine how much me watching yours all the way through just now has cost RUclips in lost ad revenue.

I'm either on screen or not it depends if I'm going to drink 50-year-old cod liver oil yes then I'll be onscreen so the people can see my reaction (even though I f##ked that one up by accidentally only filming half my face! eh...yeah...that happens too!) if I'm reviewing a big machine then I won't be onscreen (i won't fit!)
I do like the Ashens approach but I don't mind being onscreen either and if people think I'm ugly well, that's their problem.

Hey Dr Jake! I have heard this "show your face" thing in the thumbnails but I produce wildlife documentaries and dont usually appear in front of the camera (apart from a few DIY wildlife home videos, within which I am on the thumbnail)... Do you think its still worthwhile putting my face onto the thumbnail and if so, im not sure how I would make that not seem weird or out of place really.

it all depends on the person.
f.i. I am on a disability paycheck making more money on top of my wage means automatically that my paycheck be cut and (if you make extra money it means you are working and if you are working then you won't need us!) since my channel isn't a second pewdiepie i had to close the money tap because I don't want to lose money making videos
its just a bit of fun and if the ratings go drastically up then we'll see.

You mentioned something about videos needing to be 10 minutes long for ad revenue. Is this a real thing, or just a myth people believe about the algorithm?
Nice video, but to make it even better don't edit it, just totally prepare beforehand what you are going to say and speak non stop for the full 10+ minutes with no edits, it will take them to the next level IMO, and don't make them like the Americans, keep it authentic.
Is ten minutes+ the magic number then?
