Police clear pro-Palestinian encampment at UC Irvine, protestors arrested

- Tensions escalated as police surrounded the University of California, Irvine campus and began arresting pro-Palestinian demonstrators while dismantling an encampment on Wednesday. UCI called the gathering a “violent protest” and urged students to avoid the area. “Please disregard all previous orders to shelter in place. If able, please leave immediately & continue to avoid the protest area until further notice,” the university said.
Officers from several law enforcement agencies created a skirmish line near demonstrators, who were positioned both inside and outside of the encampment’s wood palette barriers. As authorities began moving in and dismantling the encampment, tensions rose as demonstrators expressed anger over the arrests and several scuffles broke out.
Officers removed tents and cabanas and piled them into a corner as they cleared the area. They eventually headed to the second floor of the Physical Science Lecture hall, detaining anyone who remained while also removing banners and signs draped over the balcony.

@@First-Last_namefrom what I saw the cops did a good job. They did not use excessive force. The patiently moved forward over time and cleared the area. A couple dozen arrests and with the police line others moved out of the area. Not a lot of physical interaction. The police prevented escalation.

There are plenty of more appropriate places for these Palestinians to voice their foreign politics. They don’t understand difference between peaceful protests and commondeering take over of university property and buildings, impeding university operations for other students faculty and staff. If you want set up peaceful protest make posters and signs and have few people who are versed in the topic who have enough emotional intelligence to have a conversation about their message. It’s the delivery of the message that is also important and this is not the way to go about it.
