it is hard for me to understand why some people click on "dislike" icon.. here on your tutorials. After I came across your photoshop tutorials, i started to feel more confident and creative and more independent in my dealings with photoshop. Not only your tutorials but also your humble, friendly way of talk, gestures, personality had a great impact on my learning., thanks again from the bottom of my heart, bro.

Its just an algorithm thing.. no mattee how bad or good it is there will be always like or dislike.. but consider this it got only 200 dislike compare to 1.1 k like which is nothing..

He does a nice job explaining the process and some of the reasoning behind it. But I understand a dislike, and here is why: certain assumption are made. Like all of my settings are set correctly and tutorials are easy to follow. In the properties, view mode, if you have the three boxes checked, the brush tool doesn’t work. I learned that the hard way and it took time. I get it that there has to be constraints on what you cover, too much..too little. But I understand the frustration of trying to learn this way. If you are learning from these tutorials, thats great and considerate yourself fortunate.

For the past few days I've watched several other tutorials and you're the first to explain it so clearly and using the "Select and Mask" tool in 2017 version - thank you so much!!! Others use the gradient tool, but I feel you have more control using the lens bur tool as you explained.... excellent!

  • @jjaylad

Thanks for another great tutorial! Unfortunately for me, my PC slows down so bad using Select and Mask that I can't use that. As I use the selection brush in it ...the progress of the selection does not even show up the way it does when using the same tool on a normal layer.
I ended up duplicating the BG layer twice, selecting the subject on the top layer, then rough selecting the subject on the middle layer and using content aware fill to remove it. Then on that layer I used the Filter/Tilt Shift, to blur the background and that technique worked very quickly and very well. My PC is a Core I7 laptop with 16 gigs of ram but with the latest versions of LR CC and PS CC open along with a web browser ...things get painfully slow.
What really fries me is that my LG G7 THINQ phone now has dial in DOF which generates even more realistic DOF than these Photoshop techniques produce. ...even with an extended arm or a long branch of a tree jutting into the foreground. The phone is creating the depth map on the fly and allowing the shooter to dial in whatever level of blur is desired!
The phone with its 'selectable' DOF ...on demand, is such a treat! Meanwhile for portraits the skin tones and fine detail are as good as what I get from my Sigma 17-50 2.8. or Nikon 50mm 1.4 etc, which for my D7200 ...are all I'd 'walk around' with. I backpack a fair amount and the phone covers most everything including macro down to a cm ...so again ...a real treat leaving the DSLR bag at home.
Bottom line to me, is that it is time for Adobe to pony up with a filter or add-on that will do what the phones do now ...automatically. To have to spend 15 minutes or more to get a photo from 3 or 4 thousand dollars worth of DLSR and lens to look as good as one from a phone ...is getting ridiculous. For sure ...we can't do birds in or high speed sports with phones (yet) but for most portraits for social media etc. and even up to 8x10, many of the new phones are fine, and their 16mp images often need less LR editing than those from our cameras set to neutral tone and sharpening. If Sony, Nikon, Canon etc. could adopt that 'dial in DOF' technology into new cameras that would be even better. Of course that would mess up their sales of large aperture lenses so they won't, but surely the engineers at Adobe could look at what's happening in phones and incorporate that into LR and/or Photoshop. Too bad one can't attach photos here or I'd include a normal and adjusted shot as examples.
In any event the method I described is the quickest I've found thus far, and avoids the complexity of depth maps and gradients.
Thanks again for your enlightening tutorials. Hope you are popular enough now that you can prod Adobe to incorporate a DOF system that mimics what the newer phones can do in a heartbeat now. Otherwise ...with the steadily improving phones and their innovative features and 3rd party apps ...the impact on camera manufacturers and photographers will continue to escalate.

Great tutorial! I was trying to figure out how to create a gradual blur on the background of one of my photos, and you explained everything so well, as always. The only thing that was different for me was that once I had created the blur I did not have to disable the mask. Not sure why, but it did not hide the blur for me. Anyhow, I was able to achieve my objective very nicely.
