Beatrix Potter is a hero of mine, too. Her art work is only the beginning of how truly inspiring she is. She, almost single handily saved the lake district from development and also brought back an almost extinct sheep breed, she loved preservation, was the first to license her characters, and used her money to insure her independence from her parents. She is a role model for me. So much more than the artist we all know. You did a beautiful painting that honors her work!
My art hero is you! you are the one who got me intrested in drawing, and if i couldnt draw ever again i'd be so sad! when i have art block i love watching your videos! you always inspire me!
I love Beatrix Potter's illustrations. Many of the drawings in storybooks I read when I was a kid inspired me to do art myself. Love Tasha Tudor & Garth Williams work as well..👍
You are incredibly talented……l have been doing little books for our severely autistic grandson who goes to horse riding….the little book was to teach him all about riding horses and l used your tutorials to teach myself how to draw horses…..the little books were a real success with the class. Now l am doing a book about his two pet rabbits and here you are again! With all the help l need! You are amazing! Thank you!
she is my hero as well. I love that her animals look like themselves and not cartoons. She had so many facets to her personality and it shows in her stories and illustrations. She was an amazing woman. especially for her time. I have a whole large page of swatched blacks. it's amazing how different they are. I am doing that with all my colors. It has really helped me refine my palettes
I love Beatrix Potter. I knew the illustrations but start to read the story at a much later date. I read a Beatrix Potter story before going to bed everytime I feel too anxious to sleep. Your little bird with his cap will fit very well as a mailman in one of her story
That turned out adorable. Mission accomplished, I think it fits very well to the style of Beatrix Potter. I liked your insights on realistic art and illustrative art too about the outlines and shadowing. Thanks for the wonderful video!
I think i broke my laptop slamming down the left touch pad button when i saw the title haha. I love Beatrix Potter! She is one of my fave authors of all time and i even did my final art project on her work. I cried when my mam told me one year she was taking me to Windermere in the lake district, UK (luckily a couple of hours where i live) because she knew how much i loved her work, and we went to the Beatrix Potter museum and to the house where she lived. Sorry i got carried away, i get too excited when its something im passionate about. But yes do more in this series!
For even more inspiration: If you don't know her check out "Ruth Koser Michaels". She was a German illustrator and did hundreds of fairy tale illustrations. I absolutely adore her style.
It looks wonderful, Valerie. I love everything Beatrix Potter, so this piece was right up my alley. Mr. Chickadee looks snug and warm and ready for take-off. Curious to see what you’re going to do next.
I love Beatrix Potter! Her style is so sweet and illustrative-it really matches your style too! This is so incredibly cute thank you for sharing! Love how it turned out!
Wonderful illustration! I enjoyed very much watching your demonstration. The chickadee is an American bird though so not one Beatrix Potter would have been familiar with. For those interested, the nearest British bird is probably the Coal Tit, for even greater authenticity!!
Hi Valerie, I love this, what a great idea of a series. I am looking forward to seeing more of your inspirations. You are definitely one of mine. I also am fond of my late mothers art too. As for others, Studio Ghibli for sure, Disney- Tom Bancroft for sure, Beatrix Potter, there are others but their names escape me. I definitely want to try doing this myself as I find there are things I want to work on too that I struggle with. Also my color theory teacher said and made me do the same about not buying black. I haven’t since as it is fun to mix colors but haven’t fully explored it with watercolor but definitely with gauche. Your piece turned out lovely and definitely captured Beatrix Potter’s style into your own.
I love this idea of doing videos about your art heroes!! I also love Beatrix Potter's artwork and stories, so this one is right up my alley. You are also one of my art heroes Val! :)
I love this little chickadee!! He’s so cute! Definitely can say that you are one of the artists I’ve looked up to most. I have a few different artists that I really like and I want to do something similar as you did here and replicate their style if I can. Maybe I’ll learn some new techniques and take something away that helps improve my own art
You are my biggest inspiration and you’re so amazing at drawing. I’ve been drawing so long and you seem so kind. I wish I could meet you! Also I love how you usually say god bless at the end
Yes! I love the idea of letting us know which artists have inspired you. I love your work, have followed you for years, and always recommend your channel to my art students ❤
I've always loved the Beatrix Potter stories and illustrations, took a college course about her. Haven't finished the movie yet. I think I'll always be a child at heart.
I love your style. You are my art inspiration. God bless you! Edit: I have a question; do you ever get scared inking your art in because you can't erase? I do!
By the way I wasn’t allowed to use black either ( university B.F.A. ) Burnt umber and ultramarine blue really do look richer. I save black for shading other colours.
Michael, please do a companion watercolor to the one currently for sale. Am purchasing the current one and would LOVE a set of two! Think others would gladly purchase a set to hang .Please, please consider. ( Kitchen Reno could go twice as quickly!!! Bribe, bribe!) Thanks for sharing your remarkable talent!
One of the things I've heard about Beatrix was that she got into children's illustrations because she was denied work for scientific illustration-- so like... I love that women are now admitted access into the sciences and technical illustration now, but I wish there was a way to honour both her dreams and her practical successes from her time. I'm glad to see she still inspires so many people, though, and your work is super duper gorgeous. Is there anything technical about her work that inspires you? For me, it's the idea of trying to combine whimsy with technical veracity in a way that hits you in the feels. I still haven't managed to get there yet, but that's the goal for me!
I was feeling stressed out and came across your video. Soooo calming. Thank you. I'm colouring some sketches at the moment and your relaxed and lovely style was absolutely inspiring. I'm also using inktense. Do you have any thoughts about those?
I'm going to ask such a beginner question but the red pencil is there a reason you use red for the first sketch? and is that a special type of red pencil that rubs out easy? Thank you so so much for your videos it's really inspiring me. ❤
Love this. My mother gave me a set of her books about 50 years ago. I was fascinated by the artwork.

Are you familiar with the art work of Edmund Dulac? He illustrated many stories in the early 1900’s. His work is worth looking into.
Love your little bird. How about Arthur Rackham ….love his illustrations.
You might like Freya Blackwood art. She is also an illustrator or Emily Gravett
