Aw thanks! I'm so glad you liked that part! I used to get so discouraged when I would see recipes like this....like who has the time to wait around for soaking?? But it really can work for busy/real life so I wanted to show how I make time for cooking projects like this 😊 They bring me a lot of joy and keep me eating an interesting, diverse diet so I think it's so worth it! Thanks for letting me know you enjoy seeing tips like these. That's good to know! Hope you're having a nice weekend ❤️
Can’t wait to try this recipe! I appreciated the inclusion of the practical implementation of this recipe. It makes it very approachable 🙌 Now I’m curious if this would work mung beans 🤔
Thanks for letting me know that you liked that part! I think it can be so discouraging to see "soaking time" or "cooling time" in a recipe....I always used to shy away from recipes like these but it's fun to try new foods and cooking/baking projects can be really enjoyable as well so it was important to me to show how it can be possible to fit into a busy day. And yes you're right, using mung beans (or any legume you like) would work well but this particular recipe is measured with spilt red lentils so that's what I recommend using. Changing the legume will require different ratios of beans to water. Hope you enjoy if you give it a try! 😊😊
Aw thanks! I'm glad you liked that part! I actually debated keeping that part in when I was editing the video so it's nice to know that you enjoyed it/found it helpful 😊😊 Hope you have a nice Sunday!
I loooooove your videos so much! You’re delightful and I can’t wait to try this. Thank you for being so thorough! You answered all my questions before I even had to ask them💖
Aw thanks Maggie! This comment put a huge smile on my face 😊😊 I'm glad I could answer some of those questions for you and I hope you enjoy this recipe! It's a fun little project and a nice way to change things up. Hope you love it!
@@NikkiVegan thanks for answering. When I try it I’ll let you know. I think it’s going to be great. I just hope my daughter likes it since she isn’t a great fan of lentils.
Red Lentils and Tofu sounds like a great combination Nicole so will have to try this recipe. I probably wouldn't make it in a plastic blender jug either. Love 🥰 the video and love 💕 Nicole.
I made this yesterday and set it overnight (it was ready for last nights dinner) I will be eating it for breakfast/lunch today. Thank you for the very thorough video. Sb: it taste great fried.
Thank you so much for all the detailed steps! I was able to successfully make delicious tofu. And totally agree, bake or air fryer keeps the cube like form better and taste crunchy yet still moist.
Aw thank you! It was really yummy and def my favorite way to serve this tofu. This tofu is very simple on its own so I love loading it up with seasonings and a squeeze of lemon after grilling. So tasty 😊😊
Thank you for sharing the recipe that really easy to follow! I made it yesterday and turned well! I cut thin square and fried them with lots of olive oil. Noticed it was too wet to make them crispy, but still tasty. So, I cut out the rest of the tofu in pieces and slow baked in the oven(250F about 30 minutes), then I stored in the refrigerator for tomorrow. I love just the simple taste with olive oil with salt.
I made it without putting in the 4 extra cups of water that you say to add in the cooking stage. It seemed too much to me. I wanted a firm tofu. So it only had the 4 cups of hot water and no more water after that. It worked fine and set firm really quickly. I also added some onion powder and garlic powder. That gave it a delicious flavour.
I cut this recipe in half all the way around and it worked great. Final product still had some water condensation on top, but was not soggy and a nice gel like texture. Just drained water on top just like regular tofu (without the press).
An easier way is to soak the lentils, cook them in a saucepan, then once cooked, blend IN THE SAUCEPAN WITH A STICK BLENDER until it is a paste. Then transfer paste to the glass dish as she does and place in fridge etc. No need for a separate blender.
I'm excited to try this, letting it set as I speak. I love tofu but cut it out of my diet due to me liking crispy tofu and not being the healthiest for you when cooked at high heat. I love lentils, so it's like having the best of both worlds. Love your recipes!!
Thank you Becky! I'm so happy to hear that because making these recipes and videos is such a huge passion of mine 😊😊 It really means a lot that you enjoy them. Thank you for letting me know ❤️ Hope you have a great rest of your day!
I tried it with green lentils and it was cool. Not great but alright. I think I didn't cook it enough and mine was a little like soufflé and i just made lentil scramble out of it. This one was nice too. Anyways, even if you undercooked it like mine, you can always make taco meat or scramble like I did
Yay! Can’t wait for you try it! I just baked the leftover tofu with olive oil, salt and pepper, garlic powder, poultry seasoning and paprika and baked until golden brown. Then I put it in a sandwich with lettuce, tomato and pickled red onions 🤗 10/10 recommend 🙌
I'm eating more plant based, and I only had green lentils to make this. I pan fried them just like traditional tofu, and paired it with bbq sauce and bell peppers. omg, best dinner ever.
Omg yum that sounds delicious! Thank you for making my recipe and letting me know that it works with green lentils! I can’t wait to try that next time ☺️ hope you have a great day!

Soaking lentils as I type this message, can't wait for this, didn't really like the chickpea one, so I added nutritional yeast and turned it into a cheese.
Oh wow that's so smart! Good thinking. And I hope you enjoy this tofu recipe! I love this when baked with some olive oil, lots of spices and nutritional yeast! Especially served as a bowl with potatoes, veggies and tahini sauce. That was my dinner almost every night last week lol Hope you enjoy!
@@NikkiVegan oh wow nikki if you spread the lentil mixture on a baking tray, it works amazing well as a pizza base. Who needs tofu when I have pizza. Thank you for the recipe. 😀

I just bought a big bag of split red lentils to keep them stocked for our favorite curry, but this looks great to try out, and would be super economical, and I'd always have it on hand vs running out of tofu sometimes.
Same! I‘be always loved red lentils in curries but using it to make tofu is such a cool alternative! I find the texture is even better on day two and three so great for meal prep 👩🏻🍳 Hope you enjoy!
Absolutely! Such a budget-friendly way to make tofu and a nice way to change up the proteins I'm using in my meals. Hope you enjoy it! Can't wait to hear what you think 😊😊
This looks yummy. Will have to give this a try. I know I have seen red lentils locally but I cannot recall if they we're split or whole. Brown lentils are whole here and dhal both yellow is split and green I think is split.
Hey 😊 You'll want to use split red lentils for this recipe! Most red lentils for sale are split but it's always good to double check. Hope you enjoy ❤️
Thanks for sharing! Definitely going to try this! However, the link to the recipe on your website doesn't seem to work? Wondering if anyone else encountering the same issues?
Yes! I think adding herbs and spices would make this recipe SO tasty! As it is now, it's very plain and ready to be used with whatever seasonings you like, but adding flavor directly to the tofu would only make things even more tasty so def give it a try! And I haven't tried making red lentil pizza crust yet but I'm looking forward to giving it a try! ❤️
Yes definitely but the measurements will be different 👩🏻🍳 Using legume flour is great though because you don't need to soak anything first. I've been anting to experiment with that method too. Let me know if you try it! ❤️
Lets not forget this lentil tofu recipe has high content of carbs as well. I would not call this tofu at all it is more like making starch cake from rice. Cook the starch and it will expand and set the liquid. Not sure if it is any healthier than normal soy tofu. I figure these should be addressed as well.
Hey James 😊 I'm not suggesting that one is "healthier" than the other just a fun alternative to add to the mix or a great option for people who are allergic or intolerant to soy. You're right, like soybean tofu, lentil tofu is a mix of starch, fiber and protein and it's very versatile. I hope you enjoy this recipe if you give it a try! ❤️
Hi Nikki, found very helpful information as you describe in a fantastic way.. Thank you But I couldn't find proper measurements for masoor dal and water. Can please tell me.
@NikkiVegan it was amazing ❤️ However i tried to freeze it and the texture got very crumbly. Maybe i should have cut it in cubes before? What do you think?
it is curious you mention how with this recipe the exact messuments are different then if one wants to use other legumes so that can throw one of but I struggle to find any messurments in both this vid and the blog post
Yes, it works with all kinds of lentils and legumes but the measurements will be different for each because of the difference in weight. For best results, I would stick with split red lentils when making this recipes because that's how it was tested ❤️ Hope you enjoy!
It needs some bite to it. I also find it bitter and don't like the smell. Adding more seasoning might cover the two. I wonder if adding gluten wheat or chickpea flour will help on the bite.
I think of this as uncooked homemade tofu, so you can prepare it however you like. It’s really versatile! Toss with your favorite seasonings, some oil, and maybe a little cornstarch for crispiness and then try air frying or baking ❤️❤️ hope you enjoy!
I really love your channel, but this lentil 'tofu' is more of a lentil puree like other channels do it. Isnt there a way to use a coagulant to separate the lentil protein curd out like you do for soy tofu? There is too high carbs in this style for my keto diet need.
Thank you for this recipe! I made it this am (started it last night) and it turned out well. I used yellow lentils and before it firmed up I sprinkled bagel seasoning on it and it didn't adversely affect it from setting. Question: Do you know how long it will last in the refrigerator? And do you think it will freeze well? It made quite a bit!
That’s a great idea! I definitely still season the tofu before cooking so you may even want to add more seasonings before you bake or pan fry it up 🤗 I’ve been tossing it with olive oil, salt and pepper, paprika, garlic and poultry seasoning then baking at 400 until golden brown around the edges. Seriously so tasty 😋😋 and it lasts about 5 days in the fridge or you can wrap it tightly and freeze for about 6 months. I’ve noticed I actually like the texture best on day 2 or even 3 because it sets even more firm by then so roughly a week is good I’d say. Hope you enjoy!
its not quite tofu, more like burmese chickpea tofu since it uses that process of using the whole thing instead of isolating the protein like it is done for normal soy tofu. It feels quite different but is great in its own right. It is however possible to make red lentil tofu in the same styl of normal tofu!
Thanks for the idea and enthusiasm, but I found this really confusing! You didn't give any quantities, and when I checked out your recipe page, the procedure was very different from the one in this video.
Hey Philip 😊 I do a lot of recipe testing to make sure the recipe is perfect and as easy/efficient as possible, so the blog posts are often updated with the most up-to-date info. Unfortunately I can't change the video once it's live, so I recommend following the instructions on the blog post for best results ❤️ Hope you enjoy!
Thank you so much! Can't wait to try this recipe! Btw, can you season the tofu before putting into the fridge? Maybe with smoked paprika or other spices?
Yes absolutely! I’ve been thinking about doing a herb and garlic version of this next time! I’m sure that would be great because as it is now, it’s very plain and ready to be used in any way you like. I usually dress it up by tossing it with some olive oil, salt and pepper, poultry seasoning, garlic powder and paprika. Then mix and bake until golden brown. Super tasty! Hope you enjoy if you make this at home 😊😊
I found it too mushy in the middle after baking and no one in my family would eat it because of this 😕 I have alot of baked lentil tofu to eat myself this week 🤦🏻♀️
Hey 😊 This recipe was tested with split red lentils so I can't guarantee success with a different lentil because the cook time and water ratio might be different. I'd use red for best results ❤️

Yes, it works with all kinds of lentils and legumes but the measurements will be different for each because of the difference in weight. For best results, I would stick with split red lentils when making this recipes because that's how it was tested ❤️ Hope you enjoy!
Thank you!!!
My pleasure Jessie! Hope you enjoy 😊😊
I want to avoid using oil, is it okay to skip oil when baking it in the oven?
It needs some bite to it. I also find it bitter and don't like the smell. Adding more seasoning might cover the two. I wonder if adding gluten wheat or chickpea flour will help on the bite.
I think of this as uncooked homemade tofu, so you can prepare it however you like. It’s really versatile! Toss with your favorite seasonings, some oil, and maybe a little cornstarch for crispiness and then try air frying or baking ❤️❤️ hope you enjoy!
Did you start coloring your hair again? It looks nice!
Thanks! I just got highlights a few weeks ago 😊😊
@@NikkiVegan Thank you!!
its not quite tofu, more like burmese chickpea tofu since it uses that process of using the whole thing instead of isolating the protein like it is done for normal soy tofu. It feels quite different but is great in its own right. It is however possible to make red lentil tofu in the same styl of normal tofu!
What are the exact measurements?x
If I add that tofu to my curry without frying, do you think it would dissolve?
Is it springy or more squishy like
I found it too mushy in the middle after baking and no one in my family would eat it because of this 😕 I have alot of baked lentil tofu to eat myself this week 🤦🏻♀️
Can we use green or the regular lentils instead of red?
Hey 😊 This recipe was tested with split red lentils so I can't guarantee success with a different lentil because the cook time and water ratio might be different. I'd use red for best results ❤️
