Meet BlueBarry Vanilow, my 2006 Toyota Sienna mini campervan! In this video I share how I sleep in my van on the streets of New York City! I go over the difficulties of finding parking, the whole bathroom situation, and a surprise I learned while sleeping in my van in the biggest city in the country! It's not for everyone and it's not easy! Did you learn anything knew?
Also to be noted -I do realize that some unhoused folks are sleeping in their cars in the city. I sleep in my van for environmental reasons as well as financial reasons. As someone who lives below poverty level, I am able to live this lifestyle because I have and can live in this mini campervan.

I remember driving my 2015 sienna to NYC. Best experience ever. Rent free and got to see the city for 3 months. I definitely tint my window all around and got car wash every week to keep a low profile. As for bathroom i learned how to manage what i eat and what time. Never really had a bathroom issue. Please stay safe
Yes other people are doing the same as you. I am doing it in another borough too.. Laundry Mats, some McDonald's , Home Depot & Lowes, are good places for bathrooms.. Another thing, if you are not seen or heard in your vehicle, you fit in with all the other vehicles parked... you don't stand out... plus your vehicle moves... you will be fine.. Very nice of you to share, but please don't share too much, be careful....

I figured as much. I’m sure if I was staying longer I would find a better place to park and scout out bathrooms, but the week and a half was manageable to get through. And I felt safe. Best of luck to you!
I'll be adopting this lifestyle in 10 years from today. van life gives you more freedom to go anywhere you want in your van, and see places you've never been before.

Targets have good bathrooms which you can lock and where you can have some solitude. These open early close late.
I have also car camped in NYC (Manhattan, upper West side) for a week during a convention and agree that having to move the car every few days was a pain. I would have paid for parking, but all the NYC parking garages seemed to be valet-only so there was no way to access the car while it was parked. It was smart to put the black coverings on the window covers, because shiny refectix would definitely draw attention that someone was living in the car. Some people do such a bad job of it (towels hanging out of a window or hanging out and cooking with the doors open) that it seems like they are trying to advertise that someone is living in the vehicle. Although I would note that I didn't see any of that kind of behavior in NYC specifically. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Park in Manhattan Beach Brooklyn. Quiet and parking is available every season but summer.
If u happen to be in brookyln park around marine park areas u don’t have to worry about getting tickets no street cleaning at all

I lived on that very block until not too long ago and I can assure you, in general, New York is not very car camping friendly at all! If somebody had snitched on you, a cop from that precinct around the block, would have been knocking on your window in no time! So do yourself a favor and be extremely discreet. I know you want privacy, but be aware that in an urban setting, shades actually makes your vehicle even more suspicious..

NYC also have two days free park Around SOHO area from Fri 6 pm to Mon 7 Am..every day after 8 pm soho almost all street clear and safe too… you can do two days shopping

HI SARA TRY WILLIAMSBURG BROOKLYN. TRY DOMINO PARK BY THE WATER , THE AREA IS LIKE MANHATTAN BUT THERE PUBLIC BATHROOMS ARE SO CLEAN AND ITS VERY SAFE WITH POLICE AND SECURITY .

I am not anywhere from that any area. But That is unreal NYs parking system. Guess that's the best with what they have to work with but why aren't they redoing the underground areas and the empties lots and buildings to make parking for the ppls. Doing parking shuttles. Got a lot of homeless that need work and redoing those places would open up jobs and help the parking. Clearing place does not take a lot of $$. And would think it would generate money for the city using shuttles and certain parking areas that could be rented for hours or even day packs... Anyway, thank you for sharing You be blessed and if your ever in need of parking in my area you are welcome to a spot on our 10 acres.

Iive in new york and I am just trying to get rid of high rent nowadays I am about to become homeless so that's why I am watching this video I know so many people live in vehicles just like you did and honestly no one cares not even theifs because they see you as very poor there isn't much they can steel from you plus they don't know if you are inthere or at work. Soon I'll be doing this full time becouse I love new york city and can't live anywhere else. Thank you for your honest in put as far the shower goes I take shower every day and few time we didn't have hot water I just boiled some water and mixed with cold water one bucket of water was more than enough to clean up.

Not really. When I use the jetboil inside it steams up a bit.
Looks just like my Sienna, but I have a few more stickers on my window 😏
I've been living in a Toyota Corolla with my dog for 5 years and I was working I will take a shower at work get ready at work cuz what I did was clean office and there was nobody around and they were okay for me to take a shower at work I would take my dog with me and put him in one of the office I did that for 2 years but now I lost my job and still live in my car with my dog and I'm looking for a job really quickly because my savings are going real fast but it's it's nice cuz you get to explore it's a sense of freedom thank you so much for sharing your story take care
Wow that’s impressive. Best of luck on your job search! Before the minivan I had a corolla I converted into my camperolla! But I only slept in it every so often on road trips, not living in it.

That’s a non-negotiable-8 days without a shower is nuts! I can’t go a day without a shower, sometimes 2 showers! Join planet fitness and you can shower any time…membership is super low and worth it…nothing like good hygiene! Stay safe
And for me 2 showers a day is nuts! I’m used to going a week without a shower while backpacking long trails. For this time in NYC I was able to stay clean with wipes until I could go to my friend’s.
oh wow i thought parking in Park Slope, Brooklyn was rough with 15-20 minutes, an hour would give me a breakdown lol
And as a new yorker, I really don't care if someone is living in their car. Plus, we see so much weird stuff and get accosted by panhandlers, etc,. that we have learned to mind our own business :)

You have to buy something to use the restroom at a restaurant like McDonald’s or Taco Bell?
No fast food places near where I parked.
Don't you have a Gym membership for shower, etc.?

How about winter time??
I won’t be sleeping in my van in nyc in the winter time, but I have slept in my van in Colorado in January with a low of 3 degrees. I have a wool blanket that I sleep on and I could use my zero degree or 20 degree down sleeping bag (I use while backpacking) that keeps me cozy and warm! Plus the reflectix in the windows help some with insulation.
I pive the #minivan #vanlife and luv it for the most part,i do alot of the things you do ,also i wipe my body but the shower thing us geice a week for me at ny parents as of now . Other fhan that its good. Number ine is in a jug and #2 is at work or whatnot . No one knows until i tell em. But this is a stepping stone for me,i want a sprintwr un the future.🎉 But not paying rent feel amazing 🎉

Change the title how I use my friends house to go o bathroom and take a shower.
If you cant do that you just get a gym membership, just use ya brain
I know that’s what some others do. Not necessary for me since I was only there a week and a half.

yeah, we were working an event with long hours and hers was even longer and I didn’t want to go shower when she got back at 10pm

You can go to Cornwall New York and there's a couple of different bars around they'll let you use the restroom there's one bar a friend of mine owns and her name is Tracy she'll let you use the restroom
