After couple weeks of decamping in DTES by the City's and Cops, the problem remains the same s.h.i.t. except there is less sense of urine smells. These guys are rooted here for decades and have nowhere to go....dislocating them is not the solution for this complex complication.
The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, the DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work. It is also known for its strong community resilience, history of social activism, and artistic contributions.

so many commentators have no idea how much they would end up like these people with no place to stay and no job. Once your body succumbs to malnutrition that you can't perform a shift for a job or maintain appearance and "working" people stop helping you and druggies rob you, you have nothing but struggling to cope or you commit suicide.
lovely words, pin it
You do know these people that you said many would end up just like this without any jobs don’t exist in so many parts of the world right? I mean this happens mostly in the West and third world countries. It happens even in developed western countries because people allow this nonsense liberal thinking that a bit of drugs are ok. NOT ok in many countries. You know where I live has ZERO tolerance to guns and drugs of any kind? This wanting to “experiment” doesn’t include drugs at all. Drugs aren’t widely available either. Of course people would want to experiment if they are widely available. Way too casual. Doing drugs here is equivalent of committing a murder here. This too casualness is exactly why most western countries have this problem. And corruption is rampant in North America. Anyone can be bribed. Do you think this nonsense exists here? And I don’t live in authoritarian country either. It’s G7 country. Those countries that imitate America would go down hill just like American liberal states with wokeism no doubt. You know why? They got no morals. They are too greedy. Imagine running a country without morals with top 1% of billionaires running the country without a care for their own people who are poor. Yeah they open up the damn southern “borders” letting these illegal aliens even though their own people are suffering. Can’t get more stupid than that. I despise Biden and I feel sorry for most Americans. This is why Canada should not imitate any American liberal nonsense wokeism and should boycott the woke movement. Seriously. I lived right in Vancouver for years. Not anymore. The city is dead.
So right, Kevin..and those judging Houseless/homeless for the drug use, etc. Good Gob! Could You( the judgers) cope with what they have and now experience! The lack of compassion or empathy from The Judgers is so depressing. ...
so sad
it is like an open air mental institution
look bad but not as bad as institution.
This is worse than an institution by far
At least, if a good institution, managing with their patients their meds so they can function and they would be clean, warm, fed, and have a bed to sleep indoors. Out here, so many missing aspects for someone trying to keep sane. No home, rarely clean and healthy body, unsafety, bad sleep, substance use to numb their emotional suffering... nope, i feel this worse than an institution.
People has been wonted witnessing the bad condition. They think it is natural, never asked about who responsible for this chaos.

Here in Africa, we were told how good western (capitalists countries) are through radios, newspapers and above all movies. On the other hand we were made to believe that Russia and China are both bad and poor.

Its makes me angry, sad and sick that people cannot afford decent housing. I work my ass off, always have and I struggle hard. I have a good vehicle thats paid off, debt under 5k and struggle to make ends meet while renting an old, outdated, 2 bedroom apt. I bring home 2900-3000k per month and my rent is known as cheap where I live, at 1640 per month (avg 2 bd is 2200). I am paying more than half my fkg wage on rent. If I was paying the average, I would be screwed. I dont want a hand out... I want a well deserved break.

My family recently went to Vancouver for a week. One afternoon, after parking the car, we planned to walk to Chinatown for dinner. However, halfway there, we were scared off by the scene and decided not to go anymore. It was just too terrifying.
The so-called democracies are hypocrites, they do not care their own people but other nations, bomb the other nations as they want, that is really terrifying, the western world has faded and bankruptured.
Chinatown for dinner, go to Richmond, most of Chinese merchants moved there. Vancouver is still nice if you try to skip this section on Hastings.
Wow sad for businesses

super naive - these people could care less about a tourist. they are all too far gone. unfortunate truth. i have seen it this spring - a ton of families from around the world looking absolutely terrified in the DTES/hastings. rightfully so, but as someone living in the GVRD - mind your own and there (i haven't had any) will never be an issue.

Which is worse: the homeless camps on sidewalks or all of the boarded up offices and shops they are next to?
nothing good at all, but there is no choice
What is your point? It seems to me you're trying to compare the bad economy with homeless people. Which is worse? If you don't know you're one of the people that do not understand the meaning of compassion. Listen to Steve Jobs public speech just before he died. A billionaire but cancer got him and all his money couldn't make him well. And he finally figured it out.

50 tysięcy poszukiwanych w stosunkowo niewielkim i gęstym w miastach, kraju...

I used to live nearby actually for a few months. Right near the corner of the intersection between Union Street and Main Street. Often I walked up this way to get to Gastown and seeing what I witnessed as I do here in this video shocked me. A man told me one evening that he used to live under the bridge near my living area for the best part of 20 years. I couldn't believe it. He thinks that this community is practically holed up and kept where they are today because the police don't want them to branch out into other areas. Now I could be completely wrong, but in all honesty, because this was a man who suffered greatly for so long living near this area, I'd be inclined to believe him.
Vancouver is like the Roman god Janus. It has beauty, but matched in parts by the horrors from within.
I have the same thought as that man lived under the bridge. City's and cops want to keep these guys under controlled perimeter. If they wander/camp outside this hood, cops shall come or ask them to leave or move away.

Canada is a country known for its generous social welfare programs, in Toronto where I lived here for two years, things looks the same...
With an incompetent government running the country. Wiping out the middle class and relentless rise on cost of living. For a couple who makes over 150k a year before taxes living very modestly in Richmond. I am telling you, we are not living comfortably. We ain't struggling but by no means having the extra $$ to do things we want. Just imagine how minimum wage people live. I don't think it's doable to make minimum wage and put a roof over their head.
Yes Vancouver and Toronto are almost the same. in Toronto, they scatter but in Vancouver they gather. Thank you thebomb for your reply. I am living in pay cheque by pay cheque and slowly down into a deep hole. Even today I am unable to pay the year end TAX.
The west wants to destroy itself.
i am wondering the same thing ....in france it s same thing ....
Socialism or capitalism.....if drugs, alcohol, mental illness are not addressed
All of this stuff put out out on the sidewalk. This must be where you go to buy back all of your stolen shit.
I guess so
looks like a special area something like I have never seen before, must be worthwhile to visit and make some new friends
Come by and see by naked eyes....lots on interesting
SAD, thanks for the walk through
In not so far away future whole Canada will look like this
Not as bad as you think bud. Strictly in a small perimeter.
Great look for Vancouver 👍
Not only vancouver , america's other cities with aswell your can meet to this view . America's a lots regions aswell homeless there are .😢
North America Metropolitan cities
Failure of the whole social system. Democracy and capitalism do not work well together for normal people, but work perfectly for the super riches who can spend millions or billions to do lobbying to their favorite poltical parties and politicians for their financial and business benefits but which usually contradict with the interest of others who have much less properties.
Yes their spending millions is more like I collect an empty pop can.
Even the active ppl looked like zombies.
It's called : Western Modern Civilization....😂😅😢
Looks like much of Asia
This is harm reduction? This is exactly what you get when you have 0 punishment for consequences.
We should follow Alberta's lead and force detox on them.
you really saw cops with hands tied around their waist lines
@@ExploreVancouverCanada what are you talking about
Detox ‘system’ might only work if the participant has an income, home, mental health/other future support waiting for them when their ‘visit’ is completed. Otherwise, coming from a traumatizing environment (and whatever history lead up to being trapped in these sort of places (not just DTES) the cycles begin all over again

So shameful…so sad. It looks like in Bay Area in California.
Shameful but a bit better than Wood street
Not only in Bay Area, Chicago, LA, Portland. Detroit, Philadelphia, New York… many many major cities in United States and Australia, Europe…
We know there’s something going on, politicians are extremely corrupt.
Canada used to be such a wonderful country. How come it could degenerate down to this level? Hasn't Canada a welfare system that could keep people above water if unfortunate things happen ??
This is about social issue of Rights and Grace against the Laws
drugs are bad
drugs are made to treat sick people, right?
No drug laws are bad Get it right
@@ExploreVancouverCanada not those ones
Laws here and in US are still too lenient for the narcotic drug traffickers and dealers.
Not Viagra.
for real ? last time i was there was 2015 and it wasn't like this
So real! sometimes look worse than this.
@@ExploreVancouverCanada can't believe from one of my fav city in Canada going downhill so hard just within 10 year . Last time i was there there was no tent at all , this probably make the street smell really bad also i wouldn't visit the city again
Look very beautiful VIEW nice country

FULL WATCHED HERE
It never cross my mind that vancouer is as bad as LA, california why vote for govt who cares not for cituzens but their pockets monies. 😢😢😢
We are in west coast climate
There's a lot of elderly homelessness
Very hard to guess their ages.
Sadly drugs are everywhere 😢
That's right.
It's not just drugs, it's mental illness as well. The mentally ill people were turned out of provincial hospitals and left to fend on their own. UNTREATED. TO SAVE MONEY. That happened in the '60's. I don't expect anything to be done about this problem. People have become so self-centered and greedy that few will identify this as a problem needing to be addressed. As far as Vancouver goes, the problem could be partially addressed by building 2 or 3 rehabilitation treatment buildings in Richmond, where hundreds of thousands of people brought questionably sourced money with them to get landed immigrant status in Canada before Hong Kong returned to China. The Canadian government asked no questions about whether the millions brought to Canada were clean/dirty money (proceeds of crime). In light of the casino hearings, we saw that hockey bags full of $20 and $100 bills were cashed into the River Rock Casino in Richmond (money laundering?).
Money has to be spent on beefing up the money laundering and proceeds of crime legislation. In the late '70's Federal legislation was enacted allowing, amongst other things, seizure of property attained by crime. In BC the feds left millions on the table by not applying for seizure of the dirty property, real or personal. Then BC enacted laws that gave them authority to seize real and personal proceeds properties. These were civil, not criminal, seizures and the proof was easier to obtain. Instead of the onus of "beyond a reasonable doubt" as with criminal cases, the Crown only had to prove "on a balance of probabilities" that the seized property was paid for by the proceeds of crime. In Vancouver, the federal justice department seemed to lack interest in seizures of proceeds of crime and the provincial government seized and had forfeited the property to the provincial government. The lack of interest on the feds part was never explained to me.
Surely if Richmond residents don't mind living in a place with a high earthquake risk, they will take the 'risk ' of providing care for mental health sufferers and drug addicts to get their lives and health back. And not just Asian people but all BC people.
What the hell is going on Vancouver ? To see this and then look at the wealth on the North shore and English Bay…and to see police stood about with hands in their pockets….This is unbelievable it is like Pakistan….
