You can never go wrong with a bit of Dave Allen
Dave Allen was a huge part of my early teens .... what an absolute gem he was; so observant and brilliant raconteur.
You'll love his "Teaching kids to tell the time" vid
@@Tommy-he7dx they've seen it (I think)
They covered that. You should be able to find it. Hilarious. :)
brilliant
My husband was lucky enough to see Dave Allen live, and said his ribs had never ached so much as after laughing so hard at the stories.
Dave treats cults with the respect they deserve. Strong stuff watching as an 8 year old on telly. I will always remember the role he played in my childhood awakening. ❤
You have to watch the Adam and Eve sketch. Dave Allen had a wonderful way of showing just how ridiculous religion is:)
Also the £10 note sketch is a great sight gag.
Yes but technically... Since we all have a common female ancestor if we go back for enough... She would technically be what they mean by Eve.
@@CMc-v7z No, no, no thats not how evolution works! There never was just one female homo sapien.
@@CMc-v7z No that was her name, it says so in the bible. God wrote that.
Don't think Jess will like that 😂
Growing up in England in the 70's Dave Allen was essential viewing, along with Morcambe and Wise, Benny Hill, The 2 Ronnie's and Dick Emery. Try to get the sketch with the 2 funerals racing each other. You'll love it.
So glad you guys are reacting to this fantastic sketch 😂theres a longer version
Religion poisons everything
Peace love from England ❤
Dave Allen was an absolute genius. My ribs hurt for ages laughing to hard to him..
First. This is an insightful look at religion in Ireland in the earlier part of the 20th Century. One can understand why religion has the control of the masses that it does.
Not so much now. So many people don't go to church any more.
Religion yes but Jesus gives truth. Also don’t be so arrogant as Tori f that atheist regimes are pure the most people killed are under atheist regimes.
And then there was Billy Connolly's childhood story of hearing the church hymn lyric: "...gladly thy cross I'd bear..." and thinking it was all about a cross-eyed bear called Gladly.
Watching Dave Allen with my Dad was one of my earliest memories! I remember he was on a stool, drinking and smoking while he performed. That was a long time ago haha
Same. Good times.
I LOVED Dave Allen when I was a kid, he was one of my first-ever comedy heroes. His comedy was witty and clever yet I still felt like I understood a lot of it even though I was very young. Amazing man.
I am close to 63 and as long as i can remember Dave Allen has been making funny of the perception of Catholicism from a first person's. perspective. Not so much against religion.
It is how he's managed to stay out of any religion based heresy.
A very funny man and his TV show from the 70s is multi layered funny with more than just religion as it's focus. Well worth watching if you're in the mood to have your funny bone tickled without fear of damnation.
i really enjoyed this reaction. please react to more Dave Allen.
Dave, as a man, he was a fantastic observer of the world around him, and being a very intelligent person he could always put things into perspective with the characteristic British humor.
There was a lot of truth in these stories. Dave was born into a strict catholic family, where the priest came round every week to offer solace to their poor family. He grew up to despise the catholic faith, but instead of being bitter, he enveloped it with humour. He was a genius.
Dave admitted to being an athiest but always respected other people's beliefs. He always ended his shows with the words "May your God go with you.
@@johnsmith-es7zk Yes, he was a very respectful man. I miss his humour. x
Into the hole he goes!
One of Dave's very best.
Sadly missed.
I love Dave Allen so much, I grew up watching him and grew up in rural Wales where the local Welsh Anglican church was very strict so I had many experiences similar to this growing up, I always remember going on a day trip with my Aunty and her Vicar who was an evangelist, he knew I hadn't been baptised yet so refused to talk to me all day, every time he wanted to communicate with me he did it through my aunty, I was around 6 or 7 so just found it insanely funny and found myself doing everything I could to wind him up! 🤣
That's disgraceful. Living in Wales though, I am not the slightest bit surprised by this.
@@MadHatter-s3t Yeah growing up with families from the biggest industrial quarrying towns I always found religion in those very working class areas to be extremely strict, my grandparents were all from that era when they were genuinely god fearing, church every Sunday dressed in Sunday best clothes, having a parlour which was only used on Sundays etc.
I used to say "deliver us from the eagle." when I was small. 😂
Dave Allen was a brilliant observant comedian, life taught him many lessons.
Some years ago, listening to the radio, the presenter read out a letter from a mother. Her son had been to bible class a few days previous and learnt about Adam and Eve. She found him in pain holding his side. When she asked what was wrong, he replied, "I think I'm having a wife." 😂🤣😂🤣 I just cracked up in fits of laughter. Children certainly do take things literally.
Dave Allen had his own show here in Australia so he was very popular here too. An honorary Aussie!
He's great i was lucky to see him several times as a teen
Coming from a catholic irish family we all understood it
Sadly missed 😢
My daughter, at age 6, learned to sing the "kumbaya" song at primary school. She cried when i told her it wasn't called "Comb my eye." She got over it eventually 😂.
"Adam and Eve" with Dave Allen is even funnier and contains the greatest pause in the history of comedy whilst he waits for the audience to work it out for themselves..
The video called "Dave Allen Religious Jokes" (13:20) is a compilation of some of his best bits on the subject.
Sunday School as a kid - I couldn't wait to go next week, as the circus was going to be there too. "Circus?" my Mum asked. Yeah, the preacher said next week we are going to talk about the 'Cross-eyed Bear'! Mum burst out laughing, can't think why!
I thought the same for years Jess but, 'Harold be thy name'
Such a good storyteller
When Jess said "you can get kids to believe in anything" I thought "Yes, it's called indoctrination".
A majority of religious people believe in God because their parents, who are the people they trust the most tell them it's true. Dave Allen was raised catholic but when he got older he started asking questions that nobody could answer or make sense of so he became an atheist.
He often did sketches about religion. A very funny man.
Unfortunately too few religious people question their faith.
@magnetiktrax Yep, that's called being brainwashed.
I have a degree in theology and the more I studied the less sense it made. When you think of the thousands of years that people have believed in some kind of God or gods and yet there's never been any tangible proof that one exists one has to ask why that is.
Me too. I was brought up Catholic and battered over the head with a bible. Also it was all "Do as I say, not as I do." None of it made one ounce of sense to me. Buddhism does. I just so firmly believe in reincarnation. Not because anyone told me to either. I just do. What kind of religion is so intolerant of others? "WE are the only true religion." Really. Why? I visited The Vatican years ago and it makde me want to puke. Billions worth of paintings and artifacts and treasures of solid gold and silver etc... But what does the Pope et al do? Stands on the balcony and says "Let's pray for the sick and the poor." I say "sell your crap and pay to feed the poor!" That's the Christian thing to do! And yes, I know it's all religions, all over, which is mostly why I don't attach myself to one. I just try to be good, kind, and helpful. That's all. :)
@@MadHatter-s3t Totally agree. Some of the worst people in history have murdered in the name of religion. In fact 90% of serial killers are from religious homes.
I'm on the fence when it comes to reincarnation. I've had recurring dreams of myself existing back in the 1500s and of places I've never visited or known about only to accidentally come across them later in life. Not even famous places, just some random bunch of trees or an old insignificant house in a street.
What is obvious is that when we die we go back to the earth where we are absorbed into the soil and are therefore recycled.
Of course buddhism isn't a religion, it's a philosophy and one that I totally agree with. Imagine if everyone on this planet had the same mindset. It would be paradise.
religion the worlds biggest lie
He always finished with the phrase, "And may your God go with you."
There will be those a who mock. God is real what so many have done is allowed man to dictate God but God doesn’t need man to dictate his will he does it in creation.
This reaction was as funny as when I first saw it originally 😂😂😂
I used to watch this with my darling dad who adored British comedy (we are Australian) and it was just our time together, my stepmother wasn’t interested. This, The Two Ronnies and Pot Black. My father was a very hardworking and successful businessman in his Pierre Cardin suits, who did long hours and this time was so special to me as a teenager. Sitting there laughing our butts off, these shows were one of the few times I saw him completely relaxed and enjoying the moment, that and flying where he felt free. I adored my father from a toddler and that never changed. He died in December 2022 aged 87 and I cried like a baby. Miss you dad ❤
One of many classics
I can relate to Dave Allen's story, as I was bought up Catholic and had a private Catholic teacher on a Sunday after church at home. Instead of understanding it I got more confused. My late Mum was Catholic from Northern Ireland and my Dad was Protestant from The Republic of Ireland. I was born in 1964 in London so I had both sets of the Family but enemies during the troubles in Northern Ireland which I have experienced from both sides. I have British citizenship and Irish citizenship as so does my younger brother. There are so many contradicting teachings in the Bible such as Adam and Eve if to be believed are really Brother and Sister who had two children called Kane and Able which actually goes against the teaching to not have sex with your sibling. Also as a very young child I had to go to Midnight Mass on Christmas eve and had to stay awake which was extremely difficult. Then when we got home about 2 am I had to go to bed and sleep otherwise Father Christmas wouldn't come, but I was fully awake and couldn't get to sleep. When I got to my early 20's I got fed up with church and religion as for over 20 years it was stuffed down my throat and I had enough. When I got Dad to tell mum that I was not going to church anymore, she didn't speak to me for 6 months plus it took at least 3 years to get back a mother and son relationship. I have my own beliefs but I don't go to church and have nothing to do with religion as for me it's one of two things that destroy people's lives and causes many problems in the world with politics as well. People have the right to believe religion or not and that is a right that many people do. 💂♂️🇬🇧🏴🇮🇪
Well said. My childhood was similar. None of the bible makes sense. There's so many gaps and hypocrassy. :(
Talking about the Tooth Fairy, when I was very young, I thought that the boat that took you across a stretch of water was called the fairy, as in the Staten Island Fairy in New York or the Woolwich Fairy here in London.
I called soldiers.shoulders for years!
As someone who has recently left religion and rejoined reality, I appreciate Daves humour
I’ve been watching Dave Allen for most of my life one way or another whether it’s on the Internet or when I was a kid actually seeing him on television the man was a genius and his sketches were really really funny but his stand-up when he sits on that chair and tell stories that’s the real day Alan and it was just magical
I was brought up in an Irish Catholic environment and this totally resonates. I was a logical little kid who tried hard to be good, but I was totally flummoxed by the nonsense of it all. 'Fear and retribution' was no way to induce morality in a child, and I could only put up with so much BS. I think that I handed in my resignation at about six or seven.
He was major in the 70's & 80's. Given the grip of the church on Irish life at the time, he fairly rattled a few cages with his irreverence towards religion, especially the rituals, pomp & ceremony of the catholic church and its leaders. He must have got it right as he pissed off every leading clergyman of the day but packed venues and had great TV ratings.
Probably his success stems from tapping into the general ennui & growing public disdain that was felt for the church but was very low-key.
He would have been considered pretty risqué in his day, maybe even at the vanguard of Alternative Comedy - A Legend.
@@lowwatthalo1654 60s even, I remember, the Irish adults would outwardly complain about Dave Allen's blasphemy, but they would never miss an episode, so, he must have resonated. He also broke down taboos about sex and silliness over language (swearing). Him, sitting on a high chair drinking and smoking, in relaxed conversation mode was highly disarming.
To stand before a holy God is frightening when u realize just how much of a sinner u are but Jesus paid your price .
@@williamsweeney3215 Good, bad, right, wrong, kind, cruel - you don't need religion to know the difference - there is no such thing as sin, that is just there to keep order and corrupt the gullible on behalf of the great bully in the sky.
You need to watch his other religion skit Adam and Eve even funnier
I am the Lord of the dance setee. I always wondered what a dance setee was when I was small child 😊
Dave Allen was that rare thing, an Irish Catholic who took the pi$$ out of religion. He often drank whisky during his act... Dave Allen had a prime time slot on UK Saturday night TV for years.... Sadly no longer with us, and much missed.
His Adam and eve sketch is the best
Dave Allen - "A burial":-
"In tbe name of the father, the son and into the hole he goes"
Dave Allen is a legend
You must watch his Adam & Eve - classic 😂
I was taught by Nuns, he is not exagerating but his deliverence and timing are amazing. I used to watch his showevery Saturday evening. So funny.
Dave's, "Adam & Eve", "Teenagers" about his son - and "Sperm" shorts are just as good, too . . . and don't forget about Freddie Starr, M&J, - I keep reminding you about his song, Je'taime", with Shirley Bassey (from the Shirley Bassey Show) - same with another of her guests, Les Dawson, too . . .
8:00 On mishearing words........ I remember on Full House there was a wedding, I think it was Stephane getting married (no really, she was only about 7) and the priest was another 7yo and instead of saying "In holy matrimony" he said "In holy Mattress Money". I remember that from about 35 years ago.
I saw a film or show around the same time, it could've been Full House as well but I don't think so. A child was learning the US National Anthem and he thought it said "José Can You See" and to this day that's what I think when I hear it and it amuses me.
I think of a Mexican getting eye surgery and that's what the surgeon asks 😆😆😆
Dave Allen teaching kids time is awesome
If you like off the wall religious comedy that branches out into the ridiculous in a split second then I highly recommend Eddie Izzard's "Glorious" stand up show from 1997. Full show is available on YT.
I'd LOVE them to do Eddie Izzard. Especially the Star Wars Canteen sketch. The Lego version is genius. :)
Hello, Mike & Jess, from the west of Ireland. Your reactions to the comedy clips you show have become the best start to my day. Thank you so much. May I suggest a very popular Irish comedian by the name of Brendan Grace, whose videos are available on RUclips. Two sketches of his are titled "the father of the bride" and " the chinese takeaway". I think you will enjoy them. ☘🇮🇪
Dave Allan explaining the clock is also fun.
They have done that one I'm sure
Teaching kids to tell the time is brilliant.
Dave Allen was a pioneer...primetime TV in UK
there was only 3 channels...everyone warched him
I will be 65, in 5 weeks time!!!! Dave Allen was always the best, in my youth.
That's proper Irish Catholic schooling right there. The majority of my teachers were Christian Brothers (priests basically), one of them taught us Sex Ed, an absolutely hilarious experience for a 13 year old.
I like both your reaction. Well, done.
I knew you would like this one next Adam and Eve
It’s not just absurd from a 4 year old’s perspective tbf. I’m 43 and still think it sounds ridiculous 😂
"And in the hole he goes"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You guys need to see some of his sketches they are hilarious
Many comedians don’t have the pause Dave Allen had.😂😂😂
You should also watch Dave talking about Adam and Eve
The comedian Billy Connelly knew a lady who thought as a child in church, they were singing about gladly the cross eyed bear :)
We all know God's name is Peter, as in thanks Peter God...yep Irish Catholic parents and upbringing.. Loved Dave Allen, passed way too soon.
I was born under a gooseberry Bush. I believed that for years. I thought I was magical and special.🤣🤣🤣🤣💯❤🙏
Please watch Teaching kids to tell the time by Dave Allen. Its one of his best skits about how children take things way to literally
His impression of a kid is so feckin funny😂
Jim Jeffries does a real good one on religion as well
Hey you beautiful couple. I am a 71 year old pensioner who was honoured to grow up with Dave Allen. Have you seen his sketch Dave Allen (Adam and Eve). Priceless. Dave in Guernsey, Channel Islands. Love you channel.
Another great reaction to Dave Allen RNTV and so funny. But, l think your viewers were actually referring to another Dave Allen comedy sketch called "Dave Allen - religious jokes" (13.20 mins). This is a small compilation of religious jokes from Dave and fortunately does not contain this skit you already reacted to. The Dave Allen religious jokes compilation is so hilarious Mike and Jess and I know you guys will love it. 😅🤣😂
P.S. This compilation also contains the Adam & Eve skit. 🙂
Being Irish immigrants growing up in Birmingham/London....tough times in the early 70's. My Grandparents made us so fearful of the Catholic Church and what might happen if you did not believe.....so sad. Im 60 now, spent my last 4 years at a Jesuit College in schooling. The abuse was horrendous, but we were not allowed to contest it. If Dave Allen and hundreds of thousands of children could honestly have spoken up back then, none of that awful abuse would have carried on into my childhood. Still, I pushed on through it at school....regardless of the outcome. Such a shame that so many others couldnt stand up for themselves. Eternal shame on all you Catholic priests and the pain you caused!!
Love it. Dave Allen breaking down just how ridiculous religion is. Carlin does a real god job of it too.
The things you have to make yourself believe.
Adults take things literally too, especially when it comes to religion. Crazy.
Howard be thy name...Very Good!!!
Dave Allen RIP beloved comedian and philosopher of the oddities of life.
Love your theme tune its very catchy
Dave was more of a religious sceptic than outright atheist; he often joked he was “a practising atheist” or “I’m an atheist, thank God.” The skepticism came from his deeply held objections to the rigidity of his Catholic school experiences. He mocked church custom and rituals rather than belief. He respected your right to choose what you believed; hence he would end his shows, “May your God go with you.” Reading his interviews and biography, you can understand his attitude to both people in power and the ways they exercised it.
To me, he is one of the greatest of the old breed of satirical comic storytellers. Les Dawson and Billy Connolly are in the same lane, though the former was more stage show whereas Dave and Billy are more one on one in presentation. They needed nothing other than their charm, wit, and stories to entertain you.
Sadly, we lost Dave far too early to sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, or sudden adult death syndrome [SADS]. It’s a cardiac arrest that usually occurs in adolescents or adults, but the cause of the arrest itself, and thus the exact cause of death, is unknown. It also mainly occurs during sleep or rest.
These clips remind me of my childhood. The one of few things that enabled me to connect with my father, when he genuinely let his guard down and let out his inherit dry humour that he usually kept in check and we could laugh together. I certainly recommend reacting to more of his material.
You two have a wonderful channel, wonderful humour, and the sort of relationship that goes from strength to strength.
Keep up the great work, but remember to take time for yourselves. All the best for your future.
There’s a longer compilation of Dave Allen on religion which is worth a look. I especially like the joke involving the Pope 😂
This is what the nuns used to be like - totally terrifying
ruclips.net/video/kD-fPb87mVA/видео.html 😂😂😂
For many years when it came to Christmas and the carol “We Three Kings” I couldn’t figure out why the country of “Orientar” had three kings why wasn’t it like a normal country that had only one. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realised that it was, We Three Kings from the Orient are, and that it was a region not a country.
When I was about 6 - 7, the whole school was in church (for Easter I think) The place was very solemn and silent while the priest walked up and down the aisles swinging the smouldering frankincense. My best friend sat next to me whispered "What's that smell?" I whispered "It's incense." There was a confused pause before he said "Insects?" Within moments we were turning purple with tears running down our faces from trying not to laugh 🤣 The teacher saw us but despite the glares it just seemed to make it worse 😩🤣 First time I got into trouble in school 😟🤣
If you notice Dave Allen is missing the end of a finger, you never know if he’s joking, but his dad was chopping wood told him to put his hand on the block thinking Dave would pull it away, Dave left it there thinking his dad wouldn’t do it. There you go. Don’t trust anyone with an axe 😮
Lighter note please react to Michael McIntyre and his silent letter day routine. I couldn’t stop laughing 😂😂
Also now you have reacted to Jonathon Ross show try Michael McIntyre interview on Jonathan Ross show
My grandparents went into a Catholic school in Ireland, and one was ciotóg (left-handed) and would be hit hard on the hand with a meterstick. If they tried to write left-handed, in the end they tied the left arm behind their back till they learnt to write right handed, they never really spoke much about their time there, but what they did say you can see why they put it behind them
So many rotten to the core Nuns out there. My father in law was raised in a Catholic Orphanage, the horror stories of their treatment was awful.
mother teresa begged the jail to release a priest who was a convicted peado sentenced to many years to work abroad so he could moleste them, religion always the problem, con men fooling the gullible for there own gain
The 3 evils: Religion, Money and The Masonic Lodge… or as Nelly said:
Man, more people done died in the name of the Lord
Then in any natural disaster, disease or gang wars
Before guns, they was swords, and they was killing each other
And what's changed to this day, still killing each other
Killing a brother while another mother cries for help
Man, we need to help a brother find himself
Dave Allen was a genius, so funny. He was an atheist, he realised it was all indoctrination and made jokes out of it all. Back in the day people got offended, but he was so funny.
Met him twice,nice bloke.
I’m new to your channel but l like your content do I’ve subscribed love from bonnie Scotland
Please have a search for "dave allen adam and eve"
It's brilliant because the 4 year old is the only one who sees the truth. The routine cleverly shows the absurdity of religion through the eyes of a child.
“Howard be his name” Brilliant
When I was little and heard "He has spoken through the prophets", my kid brain leapt to assuming that "prophets" were like microphones...
Dave Allen was fabulously good.
Sadly there’s not that much of his stuff available. Apparently his TV contracts said “no re-runs” so episodes were broadcast just once. That means reruns haven’t happened in the modern era where someone could rip it and upload to ‘Tube.
He points out the child abuse with the threat of hell. Telling a child what will happen if they don't love god!
I taught my children to believe in themselves not in some imaginary being🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
There's another one called "Adam and Eve" real funny, also by Dave Allen..
🤣 He has another hilarious video called religious jokes which isn’t this same video, don’t miss out 👍
Bringing a child up in any religion but in particular Christianity or Islam is in my opinion equivalent to child abuse.
It leaves scars that can never ever be undone
