such a cute episode i always love when the villains are good for a few episodes i love how the backing music to "Destiny" keeps playing in the father scenes
Do you think that Riot is really a villain? I just see him as a vain "all about me" love interest, for Jem (that's opposite of Rio), and Pizzazz. Minx and Rapture are definitely villains.
OMG, one of Jem's best looks. The dress, the ponytail, the ruffles & bows...I love it. She had a similar look in 'Beauty & The Rock Promoter'. I think Season 3 and the last ¼ of Season 2 have some of her most memorable looks (to me). Aja also had a cool look with a High Ponytail toward the end of S2 but I don't remember the episode, which I also thought was her best look of the entire series ❤❤❤ 😊
You can see that Riot actually cares for the people around him. He seems less controlling than Rio, who I think would have flipped out if Jem or Jerrica had gone behind his back and talked to his parents. Rio would have kicked her out and gone on about hating deception.
Riot obviously has a very nurturing side that compensates for his father's lack of when he was growing up. You can tell from the get-go that his dad was from the more 'fascist' era of the post WWII/Korean War America, given to views emboldened by propaganda of the era (Mad Men and other series that throw back to that era really capture it). This propaganda also pushed very toxic masculinity ideals vs encouraging love and understanding. Red Foreman is a less nasty image of this era of Dad. You can tell Riot puts on a mask like he's had to do in his life - the Jem-pursuing version of himself which treats her as a treasure (the trophy wife), his success (prosperity), etc to conform to ideals of society. This was just a few years before The Gay 90s. i gotta laugh at the part where Riot closes the door on Jem while she doesn't quite 'get it' lol he's like 'no girl i'm good' lol
@@DaiAtlus79 which is why he signed with Eric. He was able to put the reins on Eric and Pizzazz. He was basically testing Jerrica's moral principles to see if she just wanted to sign The Stingers for gain. He likely already made up his mind to sign with Eric and so didn't waste time leading on Jerrica or the rest of the house.
You can notice how Riot was different in his whole personality around his folks vs the public and Jem til he shows his true side (although her gayday was still on back order lol). by 6:52 you do see his tone of voice etc change, becoming himself (Rory), and see his true self as he tells her about his life, coming out to her. by 8:19, he's showing his true nurturing side to those around him he cares about (i'd say he's definitely Mother Hen and Attack Lion for his bandmates, the family he never had). Matt Baume needs to do a video on this.
Featured songs in this episode - all by The Stingers: 'Take It Or Leave It' (from "THE STINGERS HIT TOWN" Part 2) 'It's A Hard, Hard Life' 'Let Me Be' (The Stingers' final song in the series)
Riot's father was a bully His Wife should have stand up to his Mistreatment of her and Riot even the Army Personnel and Superiors are Annoyed of his Recent Actions
That's up for debate, since the timing of this cartoon showing (2/22/88) was awfully close to the creation of Kurt's band. But Roger Slifer (2nd in command and writer of this "soap opera" episode) most likely had in mind another Nirvana band, one from UK from the '70s. Making a search for a comment on another channel on this video found a 3rd Nirvana band from somewhere else in Europe and I do remember a 4th one in the mid '80s in Puerto Rico, from where I'm writing.
Take it or leave it While Riot Still Feels 😢Sad about what happen after seeing his parents again after all this time when he’s not feeling enjoying the party 3:03
Quite the opening scene, then party. Wow, the mom in the hospital. What a backstory. Rough w/being stuck in the military & wanting to be a musician. I liked Minx joining him. Surprised they didn't end up a couple. 🤨 Great talk from Jem to Riot & both parents. Good concert & ep. 🙂
I still have the headcanon that Riot was secretly Rio 😹 we never learned about Rio’s family (maybe he was adopted if he were the same person…either way Riot looks nothing like his parents 🤷♀️) and in the flashback although Riot is shown to be blonde maybe that’s just from Jem’s imagination/point of view. Fun fact, Christy Marx originally was going to have Rio know that Jem was Jerrica all along but she scrapped the idea last minute sadly. But I like to imagine that Synergy probably would have given Rio the idea and gave him a charm (maybe in the earring that Riot wears) that let him transform into Riot (maybe as an AI she gets bored and would do something like that for fun-she seemed to enjoy using her abilities in midsummer nights madness) anyway, I know I’m reaching but I love the idea of Jem/Jerrica x Riot/Rio…the double secret identity/love square situation a la Miraculous Ladybug (in which the super heroine main protagonist Ladybug/Marinette is unknowingly dating her partner who is Chat Noir/Adrien). I need to write a fanfic about it 😹😳
One more to go. Fun Fact: This is Townsend Coleman's favorite episode. Is it any of our business why Rory has blond hair and his parents do not? Then again was it any of our business why Kimber, Aja, Shana, Rio, Raya, Pizazz, Clash, and Astral were clearly born with their odd colored hair? 0:55-I always joke that Sgt. Llewellyn is what it would be like if one of the Joe Team went home to his family. I'm pretty sure his voice actor actually was on GI Joe. (Looks up his bio) Oh he was! 2:57-"What's wrong Riot? You haven't said anything rude, arrogant, or condescending all night. We really miss that." In my mind, I am thinking of my fanfic so "Take It or Leave It" and"It's a Hard, Hard Life" also reflect Minx's complicated relationship with her late mother and her mother's "partners" as well as the abuse Rapture got from her Fundamentalist parents and the New Age surrogate family that took her in. Note: Jem has been with Riot all night and he never once hit on her. He must be really worried about his Mom. They say that it's a plot hole that he says that he went to high school with Minx and here met her through Nirvana. But it could just as easily have been both. He did go to high school with her then moved. They drifted apart and then reunited with her when he joined Nirvana. That's how I write it anyway. Of course Minx describes her band as "the superior German band not that pale imitation from America that dares to carry the same name." And yes, I know Kurt's Nirvana was highly influential and he was the voice of his, and my, generation. But I don't know if you know this or not but The Stingers are complete narcissists. No way would Minx think that a group with the same name was better than her own! The Stinger's last song is perfect. "Oh I need to call my sister, Madonna!"
Yeah, I love military strictly by the book whenever I see one of my exes woman, though my family changes do you think we can welcome you back here? Because I’m venting because you took my rival side and I like to write revenge in my books doing stuff my way.
Actually, Nirvana is an actual rock band. Riot was never really a part of it because he is a cartoon character. However, they must have had permission from the actual band Nirvana to use their name in this episode. Otherwise, it would be a coincidence.
Ah Riot’s “sob story” episode 😒 I understand he had a different upbringing but that doesn’t excuse the crap he continued to do to others. There are other characters who had difficult upbringings but they were better people. Even the misfits had more warmth than the stingers. Riot was a sociopath, at the end of the day. They say sociopaths are made and psychopaths are born though. No offense to any Riot fans, by the way. I just think he’s an awful character (and not in the same fun, comical “Disney Villain” way that the Misfits or even Eric Raymond was). I think it’s because Riot and the Stingers were realistic villains instead of cartoonish villains, that might be why they came off as more callous
But Trauma and becoming a stoic/pragmatic to survive an environment with narcissist is actually a justifiable reason to even have troubled behavior. Riots temperament and disassociation is actually logical. He has every reason to be flawed and believe he's entitled to greener pastures. He's a survivor and he's rightly bitter about it. You're typing so hard to act like a psycho analyst but a person of average intelligence doesn't even have to watch it two times to research it like some pseudo intellect to know his own mother was a useless do nothing wench who didn't obligate the dignity and integrity of her own son everytime her husband dehumanized him. Nobody is pointing fingers at her and she gets away as the victim and riot is the one being gaslit like he's guilty of subjecting her to abuse.
In this episode, Riot's father's anger over him forces Riot to go away, and his mother Mildred to be sick. For the sake of Mildred, Jem's advice to Riot's father put aside him and Riot's arguing and love each other, starting with The Stingers concert that Riot's father came to watch. That incident saved the life of Riot's mother.
I was wondering the same question but genetics is a funny thing. A child can come out not looking like or having any of the parents' hair or eye color but may have inherited features and traits from either side of the family. However she could have been with someone else and while I'm not saying it's right I would understand if she did because her husband is emotionally and mentally abusive.
This might be a me thing. But this episode made me disappointed in riot. The man is a true rags to riches story and then let the success get to his head. Both he and his friends became jerks and cons.

Riots father is an example of how unhealed military ptsd and toxic masculinity damages people and hurts those around them
Living proof of how a hard life can shape a hard person but overtime with a little understanding they soon become relatable

This episode features The Stingers' final song in the series, "Let Me Be".

I was anxiously awaiting the opening guitar riffs for "Lithium", when he was telling Jem about going to see Nirvana.
