When you asked if the dog (Pooka) is her spirit animal, I actually have a theory that the dog is a reincarnation of her younger brother that we see in her memories and the grand painting inside the castle… just because at the beginning she asks for a “sign” and this dog appears from nowhere in inches of snow and the cherry on top is that historically this dog was inspired by the real-life pet, but the dog, named joy, was the younger brothers dog). So in a way, yes Pooka is her spirit guide.

To answer the question about Kirsten Dunst and Lacey Chabert, they didn't play Anastasia, they played Young Anastasia. Kirsten Dunst did the speaking lines and Lacey Chabert did the singing. The Anastasia that we follow for the majority of the movie is voiced by Meg Ryan and sung by Liz Callaway.

This movie is inspired by the rumor which started after the Russian Revolution in 1917.
The Czars of Russia, The Romanov family were massacred (in Yekaterinburg) after the Czar abdicated that year and rumors started to spread of Anastasia and her younger brother Alexei about they scaping and being alive (which later bringed a lot of girls to say they were Anastasia) then in the 90s when the bodys of the Russian family were found they discovered that it was not Anastasia but her sister Maria and Alexei's bodies that were separated from the others but everyone died in 1917 that night. It was a tragedy. (The movie is inspired by those girls who tried to make the Empress (the Czars Mother who was still alive) believe Anastasia was alive and it was them.

This movie was based on the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia. The Romanov family was murdered in 1918 but, for a long time, it was believed that Anastasia might had survived and several women falsely claimed to have been Anastasia. In 2007, ten years after this movie was made, it was confirmed that Anastasia died in 1918 with her family.

From what I remember learning in class, the Russian revolution took place because the Romanovs ruled Russia for over 300 years and people (especially lower class) has grown sick and tired of living in poverty, while royalties lived in such luxury and grandeur, which they accuse to be made possible by endless corruption (basically same thing that triggered the French Revolution).
Also, I just looked Rasputin up. He was apparently a real figure. He was a drunken peasant who claimed to be a holy man with healing powers and ability to predict the future. He gained favor of the czar when he helped heal Nicholas II's son. Rasputin was later murdered by Russian nobles to cease his strong influences and manipulations over the royal family.

As many people have said in the comments, Anastasia is a loose adaption of the fall of the Romanov family and the rumors of her survival after the revolution. Historically, Rasputin has his own significant history and played a significant role in the family and royal decisions. Both are histories you should check out because the movie is written with assumption that people are knowledgeable (to at least a basic extent) of the histories. Absolutely LOVE this movie though.

Thank you for reacting and as Anastasia fan, I'm happy you enjoy it! Anastasia is really a journey finding home, love, and family. I agree Rasputin isn't that great of a villain, but I still stand by that Anastasia 1997 has the best romance in animated movie! Anya and Dimitri are such a delight!
So to answer, there is no Anastasia II, they end it on a open note (a perfect beginning) because the movie want to potray the ambiguity of Anastasia whereabouts (Anastasia is a real life daughter of the last Emperor of Russia). But I love how it ended! Anya finding her family, which is her grandma and elloped with the man she loves. She doesn't care about her titled and royal life, she found home, love, family 💗 and that's all that matter.
Also yes, because Dimitri is not royal he can't marry or even in same social league of Anya. If Anya take her title, even tho Russian empire had been dethroned, she will still be royal cuz well European royals all related anyway. And in fact it's true that "Princesses don't marry kitchen boys"

He followed up with An American tail, Land before time, All dogs go to heaven, Thumbelina,Anastesia, Troll in central park and Titan AE. I might be forgetting one or two. Also did laserdisc based video games using the same style of animation Dragon's lair, Dragon's lair 2 and Space Ace. He's been pushing for years to try to turn Dragon's lair into a movie. Failing to make it animated, he is currently working on a live action version.

So this movie is based on the real life lost princess story of Anastasia. She was the youngest daughter of Nicholas Romanov II. He and his German queen had 5 children. Four girls and one boy. The boy was the youngest. His name was Alexi. He was a hemophiliac, which means his blood could not clot and stop cuts from bleeding. This is where the Character Gregori Rasputin comes into the picture. He was a Keneth Copeland type figure in Imperial Russia. He was a faith healer. The man himself was demon possessed (more on that in a moment). The Tsar called him in to heal Alexi. The creepo prayed over the kid after a bad fall and he was better within a few days. That was proof enough for the royals that Rasputin was the real deal. He became a trusted fixture within the Romanov household. However, he soon gained an unhealthy amount of influence over Russia, and the common people along with the royal guard all soon recognized it. It became known that Rasputin engaged in sexual debauchery and even had an affair with the Russian queen herself. He was eventually ousted from the palace, but eventually let back in. Time passes and the royal guards have had enough. They decide to assassinate Rasputin. They invited him to a party in the basement of the Hermitage, where they had set out a number of plated desserts which were laced with cyanide. Rasputin gobbled down four cupcakes, which had enough cyanide to kill four men, and was completely unaffected. A guard excused himself and came back a short time later with a pistol and shot Rasputin several times, and he fell to the ground. The guards left for a time and came back to dump the body. Rasputin however jumped back up and tried to run. They shot him a few more times and he fell again. The guards then took Rasputin to the river and threw him in. (He was dead long before the Bolshevik Revolution, unlike portrayed in the movie). His body was found the next day and an autopsy was done. Despite there being a bullet in his head, that wasn’t what killed Rasputin. It wasn’t even cyanide. It was drowning. Anyhow, WW1 was in full swing and the Germans decided to get Russia out of the war, and the way they did it was to sent Vladimir Lenin back to Russia by train. (He was in exile) when he arrived in Russia, Lenin was greeted by crowds of cheering people. This kicked off the Bolshevik Revolution. It ended with Nicholas abdicating the throne. The White guard had initially taken control of the capitol, but the Bolsheviks came not long after and took it from them, and captured the royal family. He put them in house arrest for a year. At some point, they finally decided to massacre the entire family. Anastasia, the youngest daughter did not escape. Sorry :( Her remains were eventually found in 2007 not far from the rest of the family. Somehow, not long after the massacre, a legend started up that she had somehow escaped and was alive. The legend was partially created by the grandma character, who in real life was in Paris at the time of the revolution and thus escaped. She lived out her days in Paris, and offered a huge reward for anyone who could reunite her with her granddaughter. She was certain that Anastasia had escaped.

Rasputin's song is one of the BEST villain songs ever.
He was also just a scorned employee and they 'fired' him because he was doing dark magic. No empathy for him.
Anastasia was also nothing like any Disney princess in her day because she killed the villain. Maybe now they do that but none of that was happening with Disney princesses back when I was a child. She is still my favourite princess, period.

Nicholas II of the house Romanov rose to the throne as Emperor of Russia and King of Poland in November 1894, after the demise of his father, the very conservative Tsar (Emperor) Alexander III, inexperienced, he (sadly) followed in his father's footsteps as Autocrat (absolute monarch) instead of his grandfather's own, the reformist Alexander II, his reign was the last thing Russia knew of glory. Even at the very beginning, his reign had been stained with blood, as on his coronation day, many died trempled to death as it was so badly organized (seen as a bad omen), furthermore, his reign was one of the least stable of Russia's history, as he was one of the many monarch who launched WWI, being illprepared militarily and always as historically backward both technologicaly and socially, Russia's regime was not as it best when it started. At first, things went well, then they lost Poland, Estonia, Lituania, Lettonia, etc.
But matters became worse when Wilhelm II, the Kaiser of Germany and cousin of Nicolas II, sent bck Lenin, the then communist exile (who had a personnal grudge against the Romanov's rule), back to Russia as a way to weaken Russia into surrender.
Though the Kaiser probably didn't thought it would become that bad, it matter not as he only sealed the coffin of the Romanov Dynasty's fate even more.
In 1917, it all went down the drain, Lenin caused a riot in Saint-Pertersburg which spread to most of Russia's western parts, Nicholas II abdicated on a train ride with his entire close family, they were then put into house arrest by the reds, but as a civil war broke out, Lenin ordered their execution, it occured in a basement, when the entire family, including the children, were shot.
In the end, only Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, the communists, remained, bringing about a new and darker age for Europe, Asia and the world.
This is the sad reality that wasn't shown into that movie, which I'm glad was not depicted in this masterpiece, as it keep the memories of a beautiful Russia and fairytale alive.

I really love this movie, but the Real Life Story that inspired it is also extremely interesting.
Why were the People so angry? Well, apart from a growing discontent with Royalty throughout Europe that got started by the French Revolution and never really stopped since then, There was a famine and also WWI. Tsar Nicholas was, to put it mildly, wildly incompetent as a battlecommander, but insisted on doing all the decisions himself, Costing thousand of lifes on the battlefront. It is often said that, without WWI Nicholai would have probably been rememberd with disregard, if at all, but this unique position in history exaggerated his worst qualities.
The whole beginning is the start of the Russian Revolution, which brought the communist Regime to the forefront. If that was better or worse for Russia in the long haul... who can say.
Rasputin. Rasputin, Rasputin, Rasputin... well, he probably wasn#t an evil sorcerer and, most notably, he never split with the Rpoyal Family. Rasputin was called a holy man and a miracle healer, but had also quiet a Reputation for enjoying the.. worldly things in life, shall we say. There were Rumors that he had an affair with the Queen. This isn't confirmed and while they were very close, this was mainly because of the "Miracle Healer" Aspect of his Character. See, Anastasia was the Youngest of four Sisters. She didn't even get a typically russian Name, because her Parents were so dissapointed that she wasn't a boy - as they needed an Heir to the throne. But then Alexei was born. Alexei was quickly diagnosed with Haemophilia, a disease that he got from his mothers side, on which it was rather prevelant. Alexandra, the Tsarina blamed herself terribly. Thus, she did everything she could to help Alexei and ease his symptoms. As an Example: Alexei once nearly died from Bruises he got when a carriage ride was too bumby, because he was so terribly fragile.
There are at least two Accounts of Alexandra contacting Rasputin after an especially hard case of the Illness and after following his advice to leave the young Tsarevitch alone so he could pray fro him, Alexei recovered remarkably fast.
Now, this probably had less to do with Rasputins healing prayer and more with the fact that Alexei was left alone by his doctors, who gave him Aspirin, a _bloodthinner_ . Not the best thing for someone who is already bleeding internally....
Sadly, the Story of the Romanov Family ends n even more tragedy then in the movie. After the Palace was stormed, they were held by the new regime for quite some time and during this time fully expected to be released and freed by ransom through one of the other noble houses of Europe, many of which had bloodties to the Romanovs. But the Red army had no intention of risking a re-emergance of Royalty. So when the rescuers got to close, they ordered the whole family into the basement and shot them. it wasn't an easy death either, for more details, watch a documentry or the Video by Caitlyn Doughty from the " Ask a Mortician" Channel.
Now, the Reason why it was believed that Anastasia had survived is rather morbid: To obsure the identitoes of the Romanovs, the Corpses where buried in two seperate graves. Only one of them was initially found and two of the children were missing: Alexei and one of the girls, though it was inconclusive to say whether it was Anastasia or her Sister Maria. That, plus the fact that Anastasias Name means "Ressurection" Lead to the rumors of her being still alive.
One part that is very sadly true to Reality is the string of fake Anastasias vying for her grandmothers attention. One even lived multiple Years with her. It is absolutely heartbreaking that after all this time, her Grandmother had to live with the fact that the whole Romanov Family was indead dead.

12:13 the passports are out of date when Russia was under control of the Soviet Union at that time when passports are then in red and used to be blue. Btw Don Bluth used to work for Disney as a background animator along with Gary Goldman and then he got himself involved for the animation scene in Xanadu, he make his own studio by their first film The Secret of NIMH and The Land Before Time but unfortunately for the rest of his films flopped big time except for Anastasia. That is until Titan A.E. Flop miserably. Will anyway, the point is Don Bluth is getting back in the swing of things with making a live action video game based movie Dragon’s Lair (he also worked for the video game industry) but for me personally from what I heard about Don valued to to make live action ever again scene his previous production on Rock a Doodle.

This movie always hits so close to home...
I was born in America, and then my mom and dad were forced to give up after 2 weeks.
Then I somehow ended up here in Finland.
I of course don't remember, at least not much from that time... I remember only like silhouettes of my parents and I feel their warmth.
I never felt at home with the parents who raised me.
So when I finally did the dna test in 2019, after my father passed away, I was shell shocked to say the least. Not because I'm not from here, but because of the fact that my real parents died after a few days from when they were forced to give me up.
I'm just glad that I remember how I felt with them, and that they're not suffering anymore.
And that I'll meet them again, some day.

She was a real life person. this is a highly romanticized film and not at all true, but the mystery of Anastasia had captivated people's imaginations for an entire generation and eventually spawned this film. I LOVE this movie. You should look up who she and her family really were and how they ended in real life though. A major moment in history :)

@JV's Galactic Adventures The reason why the people rebelled against the czar and the royal family in real life had to do with the rise of the soviet union(communist part) because they felt that their imperial leaders were basically hogging all the wealth, resources, and power to themselves. Back then the people felt that the solution to the problem was to over throw the government, replace it with the political party that they felt had their best interests at heart ( but was actually even more crupt than the previous regime) and then loot the place of all the valuables and then capture and do horrible things to all the members of the czars family( things that wouldn't be appropriate to say on here) right before finally killing them all.

About Rasputin's motivation the thing is Rasputin is based on a real person. Rasputin was very close with the czarina (the russian queen, kinda) and with her son. The son was ill and Rasputin was the only one who knew how to help him, this made Rasputin very important for the Royal family.
He was kinda creepy and he influenced the queen badly, thats why many important people didnt like him. They tried to kill him several times because he was a bad influence and actually his influence sped up the russian revolution against the monarchy.
The movie is loosley based on this. So in the movie, Rasputin is considered kind of a traitor who was first their confidant but after that, he became a traitor. Then he makes all the dark magic to make the revolution happen and during the revolution the royal family is killed.
The fact that anastasia was not killed by the revolution in the movie, is also based on the real history, as anastasia and his little brothers bodies were not found with the bodies of the rest of the family. So people suspected that they escaped and were alive, somewhere.
Some girls even pretended to be anastasia for the money. And this was the inspiration for this movies plot.
Unfortunatelly, the bodies were eventually found and it is confirmed that anastasia and her brother also died at the revolution.

I know this movie isn't the true story, but I still love the movie for what it is. I saw it in theaters with my grandmother years ago and as you can figure from my last sentence it was a favorite (my favorite right after the movie for a short time). I'm so happy I was finally able watch your movie reaction here on RUclips. I love Once Upon a December. Such a beautiful song. Anastasia in this movie is no damsel in distress or whimp in my book. Yes there are times Dimitri helps save her, but she did defeat Rasputin at the end once Pooka snatched Rasputin's reliquary and gave it to her. Also Anastasia shakes Dimitri's hand so hard it hurts him and then later on says something about men being babies. Anastasia is so strong and she's a fighter, yet she welcomes the help when needed in life and death situations. Her character is a good role model for anyone, not just girls. I agree on more of a back story on Rasputin and that other than that this film is perfect aside from I wish we could have seen Anastasia fix the dress Dimitri got for her or say something about tailoring it make it work. I heard there was a book that had her fixing it in it.

The context of the movie is real life. From what I remember, the royal family was living in extreme luxury while the people of Russia were dying in poverty, so they started a revolt against the tsar and imperial court members (kind of like the French revolution) and eventually the tsar, his wife, daughters and son were captured and later executed (although I think they spent some time in a camp, like a few weeks). Shortly after that, rumors said that Anastasia, the youngest daughter, hadn't actually been killed, or at least had survived. I think people said her younger brother had survived too. Many women later pretended to be a grown up Anastasia, but were all proven to be con artists, and they ended up finding the skeletons of Anastasia and her brother after some years. Also, Rasputin was a real person! He somehow helped healing the tsar's son who had hemophilia, and that gave him a lot of power over the royal family because they were grateful and thought he was some kind of magician (hence why he has magical powers here) or maybe a Jesus type of person, like a miracle healer. He abused that power a lot, was sleeping with many women including members of the royal court, got a lot of money, etc. Because of his influence and growing power, religious people and the aristocracy saw him as a threat, and in the end some aristocracy people tried to murder him, but he survived poison, being shot once, being beaten severely, and being shot a second time, all in the span of a couple hours, which sounded impossible and later started the rumors that he made a pact with the devil or something similar. They threw him in the water and he eventually drowned. If you have some time, it's worth looking up in my opinion.

Actually, Anastasia and Rasputin are actually based on real historical figures. Rasputin didn't sell his soul for immortality, but he did survive attempted murder several times (poisoned with cyanide in his food and drink, shot 3 times, and finally drowned). He was buried in secret so that no one would desecrate the body. Anastasia really did disappear, but there was not true magic involved in either her or Rasputin's story.
