Ford 2.0 Ecoboost Valve Cleaning How-To

  • This video will show you how to clean the valves on the Ford 2.0 Ecoboost engine. Since this engine is a GDI (gasoline direct injection) the valves will not have fuel cleaning like most port injection engines. So over time the valves will get carbon build up on them thus restricting the engine. This was done on a 2013 Ford Focus ST but will be the same procedure for the Escape, Edge, Fusion, Taurus and the Lincoln Corsair, MKZ, MKC, and Nautilus using this engine. I will provide links below to some of the products used in the video.
    Carb Cleaner: amzn.to/42OggIf
    Brake Cleaner: amzn.to/42OVfNF
    Pick & Hook Set: amzn.to/44TvVb5
    Tube Brush Set: amzn.to/3MmeU1R

I recommend installing an oil catch can between the oil separator/PCV outlet and intake manifold inlet. I did this on my 2013 2.0l ecoboost and it significantly reduces carbon build up on the intake valves.

Totally agree. I have a 2018 ST and I installed a Radium PCV plate with baffle and Mishimoto oil catch can. It's one of the best things you can do to mitigate carbon buildup on the valves. It won't stop it completely, but it will definitely help.

Oil catch can are gimmick. If it was good then ford would have included it.

EPA sure has flowed up engines with EGR valve. This is a design problem and the new engines have fixed this. Thanks for showing us how to fix the EPA deflective engines. Your method is a good way to do it yourself.

Very thorough video. I paid the mechanic $200 to clean them while they were replacing the valve springs.

Use CRC Intake Valve/Turbo Cleaner. If you have an oil catch can, spray it in the exit tube to the intake manifold while the vehicle is running.

CRC makes intake valve cleaner, might be a good chemical to use to spray directly onto the valves when you have it open like this vs carb cleaner or brake cleaner. Maybe they all work the same lol
I was going to suggest the tube pipe cleaners, but I saw you grabbed some ^_^ but i would definitely suggest he invests in some catch cans..help avoid all that next time. I ran an E30 blend and multiple catch cans for years, last time I looked my build up wasnt nearly that bad...but its been another 30k and I'm at about 90k now. Since I'll be installing the Radium PCV plate, upgraded injectors (and XDi hpfp), I'll be inspecting my intake valves. I'm hoping they're clean from years of ethanol, but who knows! Since its direct injection, it may not've made any difference at all

I have the same engine but there are two wires connected to the back of my manifold on both the left and right sides that prevent me from pulling it out. I can't find any Information on what they are and how to take them off. They have a suction cup and I think a type of push pin that secures it to the back of the manifold.

The electrical connector should just slide off of the clip or you can use a pry tool such as this amzn.to/3VrOOiN to pop the push in clip off the manifold.

What about a gun rod with a 45ACP brass brush you can get the rod in a drill and polish that thing without harm the aluminum intake.

i would think a 100 hp shot of nitrous plate kit would clean this if used about once per every 6 months....the nitrous would freeze all of the carbon on the valves and make it break off and blow out the exhaust.
