Just for clarification about the Tome of Wisdoms Roswaal mentioned. There's the Tome of Wisdom, which is the original book. Then there's the 2 copies that are the closest thing to it, meaning they aren't perfect. Roswaal confirms Beatrice has one of these copies. The other one's location is unknown at this point. The way I read the Value of Life scene with Echidna in the episode was definitly her being sympathetic and not empathetic. It was just a gut feeling though really, I have a hard time explaining it. And right after that theres just a shot of her looking so nonplussed at Subaru, I can almost see the loading wheel turning on her XP background. It's so... off putting how she looks at him to me.

The bunny scene was way worse in the LN.....if you want the full translation, I’ll post it below....*It is quite long* At first, Subaru thought it was a small, white furball being blown over by the wind. But the furball stopped just a few paces in front of Subaru, and made a little twitch. Incredulous, Subaru furrowed his brows as he saw two long ears rise up. [Subaru: a, rabbit?] A little animal with two long ears and white, fluffy fur. With two characteristic red eyes, its mouth jittered as it looked about its surroundings. Then, looking up at Subaru, it tilted its little head, and let out a high-pitched squeal. A small, teeny-tiny rabbit. It was about the size of Subaru’s fist and, at a glance, it was not that far from the size of a hamster. But since its ears were as big as the rest of its body, the term “fits in your hand” might be slightly misleading. In a place where bugs, humans, and dragons all vanished without a trace, there was suddenly a rabbit. Although it could be just one of the critters that lived in the forest, considering how Subaru hadn’t encountered a single living creature up to this point, seeing it here was exceedingly strange. [Subaru: Why is there a rabbit here…… it.. is a rabbit.. right?] With endless questions, Subaru looked over his surroundings, confused, trying to see if there were other animals besides this rabbit that had wandered back into the Sanctuary. And, with no particular intention, he reached out his hand towards the rabbit, hoping to confirm what it was, or perhaps just wanting to pet its fur―― [Subaru: ――――] The next moment, Subaru’s entire left hand was detached from his wrist upwards. Blood sprayed out from the ragged, sloppy wound, and green-blue veins dangled from the stump. Were the thin, white strings tendons or nerves? Either way, it’s always something grotesque when human body parts are destroyed―― and those, were his few seconds of escape from reality. Pain of an entirely other dimension trashed at Subaru’s brain, and, suffocating from the agony, his body collapsed to the ground. The branch that pierced his collarbone snapped in half upon impact, transforming into shattering pain. Pain, pain, pain. [Subaru: Ggha!? Aa,uaghaa! Aaauu, uuuuaaAAAA,AAAAAAAGHAAAAAAAAA!!] His thoughts turned white-hot. It hurts. Every cell of his body was dominated by this emotion of pain and there was already no way to register the reality of the agony as the thought occurred to him why it had to hurt so much and where it came from and why was it happening to him and why it hurt so much and it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts―― Suffocating from sheer agony, blood gushed from Subaru’s wrist as he drove it into the ground, and, for some reason, he bit into the earth, inexplicably gnawing at the puddle of mud. The bitter, asphyxiating soil brought back a moment of mental clarity, and his eyes dashed as if searching for the cause, when he saw the white furball at his feet―― the little animal’s white fur was speckled with dots of red, and its tiny mouth was busy working away. Under its black nose, its cheeks were puffed up, twitching. And, sticking out of its mouth, Subaru saw his left pinky finger. Understood. Gotcha. What happened here? He got eaten. He got eaten. He just got eaten. [Subaru: Gu, ghhfffuuaaaAAAAAA!!] Comprehension and pain drove him into a scream bordering insanity, Subaru turned to face the rabbit. His right arm was broken and immobile, and his left wrist was in the rabbit’s belly. There was nothing he could do, but if he could just confirm its true form―― He felt something burning into his thigh. With the unamusing shock of sharp, merciless blades scraping his flesh to the bone, he turned up the whites of his eyes as white foam gushed from the back of his throat. If only he could lay down his head and faint, but the intensity of the agony had no intention of releasing his consciousness. Bubbling blood spilled from the corner of his lips, and he writhed like a fish on land. The fact that his ears could still hear, must be both a miracle and a joke by a cruel God. Like the rustle of lapping waves, the sound captured Subaru’s eardrums. Little hops. Small, tiny bodies. The chain of overlapping chirps expanded to enormity, and even if his vision were still present, he had no desire to count them. And, in a moment, he was sincerely glad that the only thing left to him was his ears. Simultaneously feeling the bites of feeding teeth over all of his body, now, through the tactile and unmistakable pain, Subaru understood that he was being devoured by threats numbering in the hundreds. He shrieked. And a surge pushed him onto his back as his throat trembled. Immediately, furry creatures dived into his opened mouth. His tongue was torn to shreds, sharp teeth flashed across the depths of his throat, ravaging everything from his esophagus to his stomach. Inside, they collided with the others that had invaded from his rectum, and, as if descending into a competition, they devoured his organs left and right, turning Natsuki Subaru into minced feed. It was the unmistakable sensation of being alive while living creatures shredded him from within. Fear had already left him. There was barely any more pain. He couldn’t understand why he was still conscious. He was being eaten. He was being eaten. His left eye was gouged out. His ears were no longer there. His organs had already been consumed, and now the skin of his face was being peeled off. A hole opened in his skull, and teeth sank into his exposed, bulging brain―― ―― ―――― ―――――― ―――――――― ――――――――――――――――――――――――――――ah―. **THE END**
I do agree with what you are saying about the trial. The trial doesn't exist to help people it exists to test them. It doesn't matter how many people break taking the trial, it only exists to stop those who do cannot pass. It really doesn't exist to help people deal with their past. Echidna is absolutely a bad therapist.
The first time I saw the Echidna final scene, I really didn´t think about her being empathetic nor sympathetic. Mainly because that would put Subaru on the focus of Echidna, rather than his ability and knowledge (which is what she is interested in). I think you could say that she wanted to be empathetic, but not because she wants to care for Subaru and help him but rather because she wants the knowledge that he has. It´s like she does empathetic thing with sympathetic objectives (if that makes sense).
So every time I see a rabbit in an anime. It reminds me of this scene. This scene has made me believe all rabbits in anime are in fact planning to eat you.
Just imagine how a phrase that he's scared of saying becomes a phrase that would make him relieved all of his accumulated stress about his gift/curse from envy/satella.
I read the novels before the anime. So, the scene went slightly differently. I think Echidna is entirely incapable of empathy -- I think all the witches are inhuman / savants -- except perhaps Satella. And I think as a result have different values. But Echidna from her vast knowledge knows how to fake empathy. But she's not evil either, she's simply...like a blank canvas. She's doing what she needs to, to get what she wants. Which is Subaru. The novels also make a distinction between the title The Witch of Greed and Echidna, as if to imply they are different aspects of the same person.
A contract is like what it sounds Participants bound themselves to rules for certain boons For Example Puck helps Emilia if: She gives him mana, he can dress her and brush her hair every day, she cannot see her reflection and he will only help 9am-5pm
@@danielantony1882 Puck is an artificial spirit which means he can't suck mana from the air. Same as Beatrice. They have to suck mana from their contractor or in Beatrice's case, she could use the Forbidden Library to suck mana from anyone inside Roswaal's mansion. Also, Emilia has by far the highest mana count in the history of Re:Zero surpassing characters like Reinhard and Satella.
First time I've seen that scene, at first I thougth she was empathetic, however right after she said her line: "I want to know everything". I've isntantly knew, it was an act.
Day in. Day out. The same routine. The same pattern will you choose to help me break free? "Sans Lingua Franca". The world will be torn asunder, and then, it shall be set free. MGS Phantom Pain
It's kinda hard to quantify the empathy vs sympathy thing I feel. Throughoutt my hardships in life and my "contradictions" within myself I've learned that a lot of feelings and behaviours we think are contradictory actually are not and even the ones that really are can happen simultaneously or at least both contradictory things being true and real within the person. First time I watched the scene I thought it was empathy, but with purpose. And I still feel that way. There's an idiom in my country (Spain) that says "no da puntada sin hilo" meaning that that person doesn't do anything without purpose/goal. I think Echidna is like that, she wanted to have a precise conversation with Subaru in that moment most likely (that's why she was telling him to calm down at first cause she wanted to keep going with said conversation), but then she saw him break down like that and probably thought that it wouldn't do any harm to her goals letting herself be empathetic with him in that moment. But that's just my feeling that there's something more to Echidna. She's a highly intelligent, powerful and determined individual with a goal/desire in mind, but that's not all she is either as a person.
I have a theory about Subaru's respawn point that he can control his respawn point but he don't know yet and subconsciously chosing it all along where he feels most comfortable/attached he subconsciously chooses that point. Now to confirm the theory let's check the first respawn point, it is where he had his first conversation upon coming to this world. 2nd Roswell mention where after all the pain he got comfort, 3rd again that apple man, 4th the meeting where he discussed the plan to defeat which cult (cuz where he felt like finally things are going in right direction) 5th in cart with Emilia he was feeling connected, 6th again with Emilia in tomb where wanted to help Emilia. I haven't read light novel or web novel so i don't know how it's going there but in anime as of season 2 it seems that way maybe he'll learn no control where he want set his next respawn point.
This episode specially resonated with me, because some months before that was the first time i had a psychologist sesión, and it was a 1:1 replica of that scene subaru/echidna
I've been binging your reactions, and I just caught up! Re:Zero is one of my favorite shows and your character analysis is amazing, keep up the good work! As for my reaction to the end of this episode, I was suspicious of Echidna from the moment I saw her character design. When it happened, my first thought was she was probably trying to get him emotionally reliant on her in order to manipulate him... whether I was right or not I guess you'll find out!
Unpopular opinion about Echidna probably, but i think that was both empathy and sympathy. I think she took him to the dream world because she truly didn't want to see him suffer one second longer, thus empathy. But, afterwards, when he talks and breaks down, she is very surprised and panics, so that was very much not planned. Then she kinda let's her greed in. She even says so, very honestly and clearly. I know you are suffering and I am comforting you because I want to know how you felt, your experience is unique and makes me endlessly curious for that unique knowledge. Thus shifting from genuine empathy to sympathy. I think most people see Echidna as too simple or one-minded. She is very complicated and often has a great duality in her. (Hence why her colour scheme is probably black and white). --- That being said my mind kinda went *poof* about the whole Rosewaal manipulation explanation. Is it like, just telling everyone the same story in the hopes that gets accepted as the truth? Or more that you make people do the same thing in a break-up as you would do, so they can't hold anything against you? (Like, "I beat my wife but you hit yours too, so you are the same monster as me" kinda narrative?
I watched your previous reaction to this anime and I thought to myself "hmm, I wonder how long will he last" and now "ah yes, the face of pure horror upon seeing our MC being eaten by those unicorn bunnies 😁".
My understanding of things is that Echidna can read Subarus memories in this space somehow and thus it's similar ti if she could remember the loops. She can see how she herself reacted and create a continuous relationship even if its reset.
I've watched season 1 and 2 several times sub and dub and directors cut... I can't get enough. Some people don't agree with me, but if Echidna can see the future then she may actually be lying because a lie of omission is still a lie. If she can see the future and how it plays out then she is essentially lying by leaving out information when answering some of Subaru's questions. But if she can't see future events and she is just watching them as they happen then she would not be lying and that would keep to others beliefs that she does not lie. So if you think of how Echidna can see everything Subaru has been through it may not be that Echidna or the witches sit outside of time or see the future but it may be more memory manipulation or Od manipulation. You can go back and watch _exactly how_ and when Echidna first erases herself from Subaru's memory. I believe it shows that she can see and experience what Subaru has done after she has taken a part of his Od or a part of his soul. I believe that in the Re Zero world the soul would be what they call the Od and Echidna having a piece of Subaru's Od, the piece having the original memory of him meeting her, this sort of links their Od allowing her to see his progress as it happens. But looking back at exactly how she does this even down to what hand she uses could be very important to decoding future events or seasons. There is so much detail in this story and in the animation that we may not even realize even the most subtle hints.
I'm not sure if you read past the anime, but your theory is pretty good, authorities seem to break the rules of Od Laguna if you think about it, if you want to, I can tell you something about Od Laguna that appears later in the story, of course I won't spoil anything about what's happening around it, just what it is. Oh, and put a warning in your spoilers, the reactor isn't caught up yet
While Emilia is suffering quite a bit and i feel bad for her, ultimately it's not going to kill her. The people at the mansion, however, are definitely going to die if something isn't done to help them. So i do feel like prioritizing the mansion is the right call overall. Finally being able to tell someone about RBD was definitely a cathartic moment for Subaru, he really needed it. Wish i could talk more about Echidna's behavior here, but i wont spoil.
As someone who has watched this show for over 5 times now and who has analysed this series to the fullest, I have to say: your reactions are amazing. It's obvious that you pay very close attention to what happens and how the characters work and I even learned some interesting new details thanks to you. Keep up the great work, maybe improve on your production quality (mainly mic and camera) and I'm sure your channel will blow up. Honestly the best reactions to Re:Zero I have seen so far.
Question: I thought about the Rabbit-after scene where Subaru bangs his head on the floor, that can a really painful traumatic shortlived experience cause one to break mentally? Or was the accumulated traumatic experiences that finally broke Subaru? And I know that in that scene Subaru didn’t break but he was close to Edit: and if I’m correct, you need to expose a person to painful experiences for a long time in order to break one’s mind, i.e. how interrogation with torture works. I don’t think that one really painful exp. will break your mind
This sort of hypertrauma is similar to the effects of radiation exposure... You're pretty much will break whether you suffer little by little slowly over a period of time, or get exposed to the experience of dying, much more being literally eaten alive into bite sized chunks among other things, all in one sitting. If it weren't for his experience with his prior exposure to 'dying' in various terrible ways, this one would have been the last straw on his back.
first off, love these analysis i think echidna doesn't mean harm per say but the nature of her greed and lack of emotional understanding leads her to be an inherently harmful person, she puts it very clearly in the flashbacks "a very evil magic user who occasionally does nice things" (although whether the echidna in the flashbacks is the same or similar to the one in the castle of dreams is still unknown)
I don't know if I'm considered late or whatnot but I believe in a psychological point Echidna is definitely a bad therapist. Character-wise, such a trait is consistent with her personality, a sociopath, a greedy sociopath, the Witch of Greed hehe
25:40 Will you choose to help me break free? "Sans Lingua Franca". The world will be torn asunder, and then, it shall be set free. Day in. Day out. The same routine. The same pattern wi what? I guess the "sans lingua franca" part is from metal gear maybe? plot twist: edd actually hates being a therapist this is his cry for help Lmao jk
You continue ask us a lot of stuff that we can't really give our natural opinions on because of the KNOWLEDGE we already know, but I will try my best anyway. For Garfiel: I will sort of try to see what makes him "tick" or sympathetic and try to infer what caused it and then in the next loop try to press it further when he is a more natural state. For Echidna: I was practically crying when I watched that so I didn't think much, but upon rewatch of the episode I found it a little strange how she stated her desires to a person who is at his lowest. It really showed her GREED imo.
is hexadecimal to ASCI, got one part " a", The world will be torn asunder, ", googled it and got: "sans lingua franca, the world will be torn asunder, and then, it shall be free."
Wasn’t able to properly watch the reaction until now but I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been spoiled…I remember commenting on how u made a comment that made me burst into laughter and I actually think that was the thing you might’ve said. It sucks it had to be ruined, and I hope my comment didn’t allude to anything even tho I wasn’t explicit.
The Rabbit Scene In the Light Novel...... *"He screamed. He rolled onto his back, sending his voice toward the heavens. That very moment, he sensed something furry enter his mouth, ripping out his tongue. His throat was violated, opening a path from his windpipe to his stomach, from which his viscera could be voraciously eaten. He was being chewed away. Fangs invaded from his anus, crashing inside his body against those that had entered from the mouth. As if in a contest left and right to consume his inner organs, making mincemeat out of Subaru Natsuki."*
I know a lot of people who react end up posting their videos after they’re ahead by a few episodes to avoid spoilers. You shouldn’t have to do this, but it may help if the issue persists.
Ah I didn’t realize. Reacting to things in this series organically is crucial to enjoying the story, so it sucks that you can only do so much to avoid spoilers
Not a spoiler but a minor correction; I don't think it gets explained in the anime. As far as I'm aware, the timeline is still straight, (though that part is a bit iffy) but the reason Echidna knows what Subaru's been through, is because she can read his memories.
If I didn't know you were watching this for the first time and you're a psychologist, i'd be calling bs on all of this as you're connecting so many dots so fast that most never get until either it's told to them or they're doing rewatches. It's scary how good you are. Bet it must suck at times when you're able to predict certain things in movies and TV.
And at first watching this, I didn't find it empathetic or sympathetic at all, I never liked Echidna from the start as I was seeing everything she was doing. She is a master at manipulation and controlling the situation, controlling information and other peoples understanding. Subaru didn't need to tell her about Return by Death, she's been observing him constantly since he first popped up in the Sanctuary, she knows all about it already. But she led the conversation with him so that he'd feel the need to explain himself to her and when he did and nothing happened to either him or her, she manipulated him again by coercing more out of him so that he'd break down completely. And when a person utterly breaks down and is helpless, what's the easiest way to gain their complete trust and loyalty? To show them unending kindness and love and Echidna does that right at the correct moment. All of this is to get a firm grip with her hooks in Subaru, supplant both Emilia and Rem in his mind and use him to get all the knowledge out of him she can because that's what her power is driving her to do. I love it for the ability to do this but I hate her for how masterful her way of manipulating people is, it's subtle enough that no one really picks up on it unless they've had this sort of thing done to them before.
(sorry for bad English) This isn't in the top 3? I read the WN but i think this is his most painful death, at the point where the arc 7 now is. (Spoiler Alert) And for me, the most mindfuck death was when he was eaten by Patrasche.
1000th Subscirbe! You are great!

Suffocating from sheer agony, blood gushed from Subaru’s wrist as he drove it into the ground, and, for some reason, he bit into the earth, inexplicably gnawing at the puddle of mud.
[Subaru: Gu, ghhfffuuaaaAAAAAA!!]
Comprehension and pain drove him into a scream bordering insanity, Subaru turned to face the rabbit. His right arm was broken and immobile, and his left wrist was in the rabbit’s belly. There was nothing he could do, but if he could just confirm its true form――
He felt something burning into his thigh.
A hole opened in his skull, and teeth sank into his exposed, bulging brain――

**THE END**
Oh god why
Back when I was reading the webnovel this death actually made me feel sick, and that's not something that usually happens
imagine that amount of detail being animated, just even more disturbing than it was already
Maybe one day we should drown out the spoilers with a barrage of fake spoilers so there’s nothing he trusts and thus not spoilt…….. if very confused
Subaru dies inbound
"sans lingua franca, the world will be torn asunder, and then, it shall be free." from part of the hex to ASCI that I got, what trhe frick?
A contract is like what it sounds
Participants bound themselves to rules for certain boons
For Example Puck helps Emilia if:
She gives him mana, he can dress her and brush her hair every day, she cannot see her reflection and he will only help 9am-5pm
Isn't it the opposite? I'm pretty sure Puck is the one giving her Mana cuz they suck it from the atmosphere. No?
@@danielantony1882 Puck is an artificial spirit which means he can't suck mana from the air. Same as Beatrice. They have to suck mana from their contractor or in Beatrice's case, she could use the Forbidden Library to suck mana from anyone inside Roswaal's mansion.
Also, Emilia has by far the highest mana count in the history of Re:Zero surpassing characters like Reinhard and Satella.
@@fili0938 Fair point.
PREPARE THE HOLY HAND GRENADE!
"Aww, a bunny! There you go, there's some life!"
Man, Kobayashi Yuusuke is such a GOATed VA. His voice acting as Subaru is easily the best in the series.
19:04 "I've been tricked, backstabbed and quite possibly bamboozled"
Roswaal never said Beatrice's book was defective. He only said the witch cultists' Gospels were inferior and defective versions.
---
That being said my mind kinda went *poof* about the whole Rosewaal manipulation explanation.
I'm not sure if you read past the anime, but your theory is pretty good, authorities seem to break the rules of Od Laguna if you think about it,
if you want to, I can tell you something about Od Laguna that appears later in the story, of course I won't spoil anything about what's happening around it, just what it is. Oh, and put a warning in your spoilers, the reactor isn't caught up yet
"hey, I'm gonna freeze everything"
While Emilia is suffering quite a bit and i feel bad for her, ultimately it's not going to kill her. The people at the mansion, however, are definitely going to die if something isn't done to help them. So i do feel like prioritizing the mansion is the right call overall. Finally being able to tell someone about RBD was definitely a cathartic moment for Subaru, he really needed it. Wish i could talk more about Echidna's behavior here, but i wont spoil.
Snow and rabbits in Re:Zero is 😨
As someone who has watched this show for over 5 times now and who has analysed this series to the fullest, I have to say: your reactions are amazing.
And I know that in that scene Subaru didn’t break but he was close to
Edit: and if I’m correct, you need to expose a person to painful experiences for a long time in order to break one’s mind, i.e. how interrogation with torture works.
If it weren't for his experience with his prior exposure to 'dying' in various terrible ways, this one would have been the last straw on his back.
first off, love these analysis
i think echidna doesn't mean harm per say but the nature of her greed and lack of emotional understanding leads her to be an inherently harmful person, she puts it very clearly in the flashbacks "a very evil magic user who occasionally does nice things" (although whether the echidna in the flashbacks is the same or similar to the one in the castle of dreams is still unknown)
I don't know if I'm considered late or whatnot but I believe in a psychological point Echidna is definitely a bad therapist. Character-wise, such a trait is consistent with her personality, a sociopath, a greedy sociopath, the Witch of Greed hehe
Subaru clearly hasn’t seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

what? I guess the "sans lingua franca" part is from metal gear maybe?
plot twist: edd actually hates being a therapist this is his cry for help
Lmao jk
Oh yeah, she was being sympathetic af.
I feel I would do the same in that situation.
Subaru is my favoritt character in fiction and i am so happy that he got a voice actor worthy of him
You continue ask us a lot of stuff that we can't really give our natural opinions on because of the KNOWLEDGE we already know, but I will try my best anyway.
Guys lets enjoy and not spoil him

I was curious about your thoughts on subaru's reaction to being eaten by rabbits after being revived to be honest XD
I wonder, Rabbits was sympathetic or empathetic to Subaru?
Well, Satella can't really kill someone who is already dead XD
The next episode reaction's gonna be soo god
The Rabbit Scene In the Light Novel......
*"He screamed. He rolled onto his back, sending his voice toward the heavens. That very moment, he sensed something furry enter his mouth, ripping out his tongue. His throat was violated, opening a path from his windpipe to his stomach, from which his viscera could be voraciously eaten. He was being chewed away. Fangs invaded from his anus, crashing inside his body against those that had entered from the mouth. As if in a contest left and right to consume his inner organs, making mincemeat out of Subaru Natsuki."*

YES!
I know a lot of people who react end up posting their videos after they’re ahead by a few episodes to avoid spoilers. You shouldn’t have to do this, but it may help if the issue persists.
He already does this I believe
How would you feel about reacting to attack on titan when you're done with re zero if you havent seen it?
Dude you have no idea how much you speak about future contexts while analysing an episode
I thought that the ending scene was sympathetic rather empathetic
Just came for the bunnies
And this is not even in the top 3 worst deaths Subaru has ever experienced

This isn't in the top 3? I read the WN but i think this is his most painful death, at the point where the arc 7 now is.
