The Valla Curse makes no sense at all - Corrin is willing sacrifice himself to tell his brothers about this hidden kingdom, but apparently the curse only triggers if you say the name "Valla" outisde of Valla, a name that out of context, would mean absolutely nothing to his siblings. You can still talk about the effects of the curse, and the trigger for the curse, as long as you don't mention the name, and be completely safe.

I don’t mind the snow-shoveling, but mostly because I see it as a grinding map, and it’s convenient for training scrubs, I don’t know why Zola thought burying his army in snow was a good idea. But it makes feeding kills super super easy.

My favourite part of Revelation was when Anthony leads the group through an obvious trap, and Corrin says that the platform probably collapsed due to it being old, despite spending the entire battle using dragon veins to manipulate the platforms.

Feel like I've been seeing a massive uptick in recent months in videos of people taking Birthright seriously as a game beyond just "the easy one," going into in-depth descriptions of its mechanics and the like, so glad to see that coming to people suggesting good-faith looks at Revelation as well, much as I'm absolutely in the camp that it's the messiest of the routes. I think that the reason that the unit balance is a pain point for Rev in particular is that both Birthright and Conquest are generally very good at giving you units in a way where, even if someone gets rendered redundant by someone later on, they'll still have a chunk of the game where they shine or at the very least a reason to try them out, meanwhile Rev has so many characters come later but worse and enemies are just strong enough that you really are incentivized to just toss genuinely interesting units onto the bench. Though gigachad Hayato suddenly being one of Rev's out-the-box great units is really really funny.
Funny you mention the replica map on Rev as a fun one, because I think it's probably one of the places where the game wanting to be your third playthrough works the best - some of its maps amount to being a ramped up or somehow more complicated version of a Conquest gimmick, like how Conquest also had a map where you replicate yourself, but only Corrin, Azura, and Gunter playable for it as opposed to an entire team, or how it has a version of Conquest's wind tribe map that comes way earlier on with the wind being an even more hectic aspect of it than before. I recall actually really liking a lot of the times it placed you on a map from either base route but with some major element of it flipped. In general the maps that get recycled across the various Fates routes are genuinely fantastic at meaningfully recontextualizing what you do within them, I think.

    • @gallalameblook9911

    • @jacobkakyoin6882

@@gallalameblook9911 A weaker map on Rev certainly, but I still think it's interesting to see how the vibe and 'challenge' of the map can change so radically. In more or less every case of a repurposed map I think there's a version of it that clears every other, but it's still interesting to see how it's done when it is.

my favorite part about Revelations is how enemy Def is artificially inflated which is very effective at making sure that your earlygame scrubs will accomplish absolutely nothing and Corrin is the only unit that does damage.
Especially glaring example from Ch9, Fugas Wild Ride Rev Edition: You finally get an actual amount of units beyond your starting handful, you're ready to start doing some hecking gameplay with a real team and not just Corrin ft. Corrin's Support Bots, and what you get is the 11 Atk Kaze (maybe 12 or 13 if you got lucky in the prologue section) the 13 Atk Hana, the 14 Atk Subaki and the 13 Atk Rinkah. They are now tasked with facing 15 Def Oni Savages, 14 Def Spear Fighters (common enemy types on the map that they literally can't even damage without pairup, tonics, or a weapon upgrade they don't have the rank for) and my personal favorites, 12 Def Archers and 10 Def Ninjas. Even the Samurai have 9 Def, and everything has around 30 HP too. You have an entire team with the combined damage output of Wolt and a Corrin who soloed the last three maps and is now horribly overleveled. Fates mechanics are a lot less engaging when it's either "guard stance Corrin kills everything on the map birthright style" or "by utilizing attack stance, Hana now deals 2+1 damage instead of just 2"
and yeah you could use DLC items to turn everyone into basically promoted classes (except Rinkah unless you bring a promotion item to the map lol) but having to do that just so your earlygame squad starts to perform like actual earlygame units and not like Donnel ain't it. Rev earlygame is such a disaster and I can't bring myself to slog through it when my reward is gonna be fighting generic enemies with class skills later instead of the carefully crafted enemy formations of Conquest.
Will say though that I think there is potential in the snow shovel map if it had some sort of time constraint and came at a later point in the campaign with more units, where you'd have to weigh the risk vs reward of getting to make more progress by shoveling more snow but potentially leaving yourself open to hidden enemies with not enough remaining units to deal with them. But with what, 6 deployment slots and zero incentive to move fast, that risk/reward comes out to one snow shovel per turn.
(I'll still never forgive Rev for marketing itself as the golden route where no one has to die and then having the gall to kill off two of my three favorite characters for no reason other than shock value. yeah sure oops I guess Izana is dead now because the gods literally just felt like it. Welp, bye Scarlet, villain's just kinda there killing you with fire now. Could've taken out Peri instead but I guess I can't have anything today.)

You go through the story of two diferent armies, one fron Nohr and another from Hoshido, each one with a diferent lord. After a few pointless skirmishes, some big evil empire swoops in and wipes them both. Then when they are nearly defeated, a mysterious third party convinces them to join forces to defeat some evil god that... Oh wait, that's what they did in Heirs of Fate

I played through a good amount of conquest recently, and was caught off guard by how awful of a map kitsune village is. The fans kept swearing that conquest had the best maps in the series, yet here was one of the worst maps I had ever played. It definitely made me rethink the popular opinion of fates in general, and gives credence to Rev being more than just "bad maps unbalanced units" like everyone says it is. This video makes some really good points.

  • @themissncfan
    @themissncfan 9 месяцев назад +4

I never thought Revelation was a bad game. You could definitely argue that I'm biased--Fates was my first Fire Emblem, and I have a large soft spot for it to this day; the writing may be unsatisfactory, but from the gameplay standpoint, all three of the routes, Birthright included, have so much to give. I think the reclassing system is the best of any FE game to feature reclassing, as it does the best job of promoting replayability; half of a unit's reclassing options are tied to who they S-supported and A+-supported, so if you want to try other classes on them, you need to explore using multiiple different characters and pursuing multiple different support chains. Also, the only one of Rev's unique maps that I genuinely dislike is the one where you fight Sumeragi, as it is SO tedious; the rest of the gimmick maps are at least interesting.
I do not fault people for taking issue with the way the purchase of the three routes was handled, though. I think the special edition should have been made much more widely available, and, uhh, I do not fault anyone for going to the desert with a sieve to try and find an Ocean Seal. Especially with Spotpass going away soon.

How funny you're reviewing Revelation, and that was the route I played first and I still love it, one of the funniest things that happened to me was that I went out of meta here and there, and I got a big irony of having a Sakura that was better than both Ryoma and Xander by the time I got both and was pretty much carrying my run as I also had a crappy Corrin (very RNG screwed Lv.Ups) that instead of protecting Sakura, she was the one protecting Corrin (yeah, I could hardly had Corrin without pair-up as he could get 1-hit KO'ed almost all the time by my bad luck), it was a fun experience overall (and I got a tiny moment when I played online BEFORE the Vanguard class DLC was a thing and one player believed I was cheating because Corrin was using Aether... only to be proven that it was due to borrowing the skill from Sakura via Nohrian Trust).

I must agree on this: rev has some of my favorite gameplay in the entire series, despite the story, and I think its sandbox nature and incredibly high enemy stats make it significantly closer, if not more difficult, than CQ because the end goal is the same (stat stack and one round) but high enemy stats make that significantly harder.

this came out right as I'm finishing my first revalation run and I had a really good time with it! absolutely loved that I could use birthright units in a more difficult game and having more class options was really nice (wyvern rider oboro was something I didn't know I needed until now) so it basically means I never have to play birthright anymore lol
I generally enjoyed most of the maps after chapter 10 up until 24(stealth) and 25(elevator 2) but the low points are definitely low... also hated chapter 17 purely for the fact that it doesn't let you save before the map starts but there are still some fun maps and if you like conquest you'll probably like rev! I do enjoy the Fates system as a whole. I really enjoyed how reclassing was locked behind supports since being able to reclass felt like a reward on top of personalizing each play through. The aesthetic of Fates, music and art mainly, are pretty phenomenal aspects as well. The writing of fates will always remain as its weakest aspect, but you can at the very least just skip the story and fanbook your own narrative so you can just enjoy the games.
I've replayed all routes of fates several times over by now cuz it was my first fire emblem experience and because I do think there is something there, at least to the gameplay. I also had the gay hacks for Fates so I had a lot more flexibility in my playthroughs at a certain point lol

I actually did buy the special Revelations cart back on release. I loved the gameplay mechanics; Pair Up in Fates is so much better than Awakening, the reclass system is at its peak here imo (though I do wish Second Seals were a bit more available, iirc they're very rare without bonus DLC maps), the glow up for Knives. Conquest has some of the most engaging (intentional) map design in franchise, Birthright is good "turn the brain off and smash" fun. There's a lot going in the triology's favor before getting into the individual games. But, and I admit this is a super personal thing to me, I just can't bring myself to care about the cast or story. After playing through both Birthright and Conquest as was recommended by the game itself iirc, the only character in both routes I felt anything toward was Camilla, and when I don't care about the world or its people, I don't care to see a game through. So I ended up shelving it before getting to Revs.
All this said, I am glad to know that others are able to enjoy the Fates where I cannot, and I do hope that others who watch this and do not share my exact mindset about what they need to enjoy a game give it a(nother) chance. You know, if they even can RIP 3DS Shop lmao.

As someone that loves Fates, I do love the positive take.
Outside of that though, I want to say I think Fates has a problem in the fandom's framing, Revelations especially. For example I see "Rev is gimmicky" as a negative, meanwhile Thracia is built around the gimmick of capturing and most fans that played that love that gimmick. Not to pass judgement and say Thracia is worse than Rev because of that, they aren't the same thing in any real way, just that I think Fates got smacked with a lot of negativity that was never thought through and then just kind of parroted. Rev=gimmick=bad is something you see a lot on random Reddit or Twitter threads type deal without any real examination or context.
Still I like all the ways it opens up the gameplay and despite the writing the story isn't that bad. I especially love having the cross-kingdom supports, those were generally great.

I feel like Rev’s later chapters gets unfairly maligned as being particularly bad but I really disagree. The last handful of Birthright chapters are themselves particularly nasty and people are willing to go out of their way to LTC Conquest’s endgame even on casual runs.
Of course, the second elevator map is pretty bad and the stealth map ranges from frustrating and reset-heavy if you stealth it to bland and boring if you don’t use stealth, but I dunno, they aren’t *especially bad* compared to the other 2 routes, and I’d argue that it has by far the best endgamr chapter of the three routes.

As a counterpoint to yours on the unbalanced cast, I would argue Revelations does so in an uniquely unfun manner that seems to have bled over to Engage: that being, that the early game units are completely outclassed by the latter joiners. However, while Engage manages this by giving the early crew a few maps for the player to decide which few among them get the favoritism needed to stay in the same ballpark as Kagetsu/Panette/Merrin et al, Revelations starts out with the early party being absolutely and completely outclassed. Take Fuga's Wild Ride for example: Hana and Rinkah and Subaki are near useless against the majority of enemies on the map, and while Kaze is good for Shuriken poke, starting out a route where the majority of your units are immediately relegated to Backpack/Poke status because they just can't physically keep up, even with a plethora of advantages, leaves a horrid taste in the mouth.
Good video though, really enjoyed it. It's funny though, we seem to have opposite opinions on the map quality: I love the snow map, and loathe most of the Valla maps.

As someone who's ran the game 6 times with various challenges and every difficulty. I will say, I think Birthrights is the worst for my own personal enjoyment.
My main issue is honestly that on repeat playthroughs, it feels like the maps just drag on. I get why they wanted the third dlc route to be refreshing and new compared to the other routes. But uh, the sheer amount of gimmick maps just tire me out honestly. Conquest just feels like gameplay-wise, the most fun and most replayable for me. I don't think it's total garbage like people claim. I actually think all 3 routes are better to replay than awakening for example. (I'm now also ready to be lynched for that statement) The fates mechanics are just... better than awakenings from a strategy game perspective.

  • @javoclean960
    @javoclean960 9 месяцев назад

I rank revelations pretty low as a game because the story gimmicks are very exhausted. By the point you play rev, you probably already played BR and CQ; and you are left with more of the writing that makes those games miss the mark in the story department. While I do agree the game is a bit more difficult, it is only more difficult in the earlier portions as Corrin is the only unit able to solidly do anything (unless you did what I did in my second lunatic and second seal someone into a dark falcon, makes the game so much more enjoyable early on). So then you get a bunch of units that are almost able to outclass your whole army. I didn’t use a very optimal team either but by the time you get access to kids you can trivialize a game that challenge runs are not as enjoyable as FE4 customizing, simply because there are barely enemies that are inflated enough to warrant said customizations (other than maybe the defend chapters). It feels a game that is brimming with content for the sake of customizing, but the levels don’t make that customization feel fun or rewarding.
Some gimmicks are good but most of the time they are so central to the map’s design it feels like I am playing a “press dragon Vein and rout enemies”.
For me, Revelations feels like a good idea done in the wrong gen of games. It is still enjoyable, but for what could have been, it falls flat on its face, with very few ways to feel exciting other than really going out of your way for some units you fancy (that have mediocre supports anyway if you into that). Good concept but with all that there is, Conquest ends up as a better executed version of maximizing what this game can be in terms of customization, your party and power levels

It's definitely not the worst game in the series, and a lot of it's most awful aspects get exaggerated. Definitely above stinkers like 8 and br. I would also like to shoutout rev for having the least painful finale on a blind run. Due to not knowing the systems I was hard stuck on br and cq's endgames, but rev's was pretty smooth.

@@henrioak I have a massive player phase bias and thought the story was bad. Not that it's awful, it just wasn't giving me what I wanted out of a fire emblem game

I love fates, some of my favorite games. I love rev, it’s really fun. Rev’s writing is not for me to say the least. And rev’s map design is some of my least favorite, probably only beating SoV. Also the random death of a certain playable character really makes me upset because I like them.

I'll be honest, I just prefer to pretend that Fire Emblem Fates never happened. I don't even think I finished Revelation. Conquest was fine, but very Avatar worshippy, Birthright was just ehhh and I don't even remember anything about Rev.

I beat it on Lunatic, its very flawed and its one of those "Beat it once and be done" FE games.
I dont like the sandbox aspects of it, not for me.
On another note, im so offended you paired 3H and Engage "base" mechanics together, I feel like Engage was such a step up in terms of base to gameplay ratio.

For me revelations you can the game developers were starting to lose steam, in not gameplay but story with the only one not losing that steam is the writers of the supports. Yeah in hindsight making basically 3 games with a development time if a single wasn't the best idea.
Again you can tell fates was trying to be the most innovative and more grand of the fire emblem games, but just fumble alot of it. Radiant duology , genagolgy duology and three houses were better at being grand and epic.
Also yes I agree fates can be overwhelming, especially conquest at times given the mechanics like skills, inheritance, debuffs, etc.

Revelations is garbage but it’s my garbage
Seriously though, this game isn’t the worst thing ever. The story is definitely bad, but it’s more of a conquest style “funny bad” than a birthright style “bad bad”. Also once you get through the slog known as revelations early game (everything before chapter 12), the maps are surprisingly playable. The cast being extremely unbalanced isn’t great, but nobody is forcing you to use the extremely broken units.
Also, shout out to rev for randomly having one of the best final bosses in the series lol.
