This is the most populous city, and the capital, of a country that will soon have more people than anywhere else on Earth. Home to more than 31 million residents, it’s a chaotic place with a complicated history. It has major problems in housing, inequality, and transportation, but if it can solve them, its residents will experience an enormous increase in prosperity. As India’s seat of power, what happens here impacts a billion people and reverberates around the world. This is Delhi: a fulcrum of the 21st century.
Nestled along a protective ridge that sends Himalayan snowmelt either west to the tributaries of the Indus river, or east to the Ganges, Delhi is the gateway to one of the most expansive, fertile agricultural plains on the planet, and a collection point for goods on their way to an extensive coastline for export.
This land has been the capital of empire after empire for thousands of years, but the defining moment in its modern history occurred 75 years ago when India declared its independence from the British Empire at Delhi’s Red Fort. This resulted in the partition of the Indian territory along religious lines into India, and West and East Pakistan, which eventually became independent Bangladesh.
This had massive consequences.
This flood of new arrivals overwhelmed the city as makeshift housing settlements sprouted and grew all over. This building wasn’t done to code and lacked basic plumbing and sewers. It’s a crisis that Delhi is still struggling to solve. Today, the percentage of its residents living in so-called unauthorized areas is as high as 40%. That’s a staggering 12 million people.
But to get a more complete picture of what Delhi is today, we must go back to events after Indian independence. In 1947 Indian per-capita income had not increased since 1757-that’s 190 years of British imperialists taking ownership of - and exporting away - vast quantities of India’s bountiful natural resources. Revolutionary Mahatma Gandhi and his hand-picked political heir, Jawaharlal Nehru, knew the Indian people needed a far different system than what the British Empire had imposed.
What Nehru wanted was an idyllic ‘Total Society’ in which injustice and inequality would be defeated by the perfect nation-system. This dream was cemented during a short four-day visit to Moscow, where Nehru and his father were wined and dined by the Communist Party’s elite celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution. With tightly managed visits to factories and theatres, it was an obvious attempt to impart a rosy picture of Soviet-style socialism onto visiting dignitaries, and it worked. Nehru was awed by the USSR’s achievements in industry, art, and bureaucracy.
Real estate and land development in the city of Delhi was tightly controlled. The Delhi Development Authority - or DDA - was created in 1957 and granted the exclusive responsibility of land development within the borders of the city. The DDA prevented individuals from owning more than a handful of acres and forced people to sell the agency their property at below-market prices.

Visiting Delhi was the worst travelling experience in my life. The pollution was something I've never experienced. The amount of scammers was staggering. I don't care about the money hustled... but experiencing all the deceiving and dishonesty was just sad as we just curious about their culture and lives they live. Glad we got out of there after a few days. Luckily I enjoyed other parts of northern India we visited and met some lovely people

City planners have no power. The only people with the power are politicians. If they want to do something about it, they can get planners to do it. But it needs money, long term backing and the involvement of many people not just planners

One of the major reason why Delhi is like this is because of Urban Land Ceiling Act 1976, it was a socialist act made to stop large private companies to not buy large plots of land and develop it by themselves, the land would be in control by the government who would distribute it equally but refused to develop these lands...this is a major reason why in the main cities you cannot see skyscrapers, the planned development and highrises are only present in the city outskirts which have been developed since this anti-development socialist law was repealed in 1992...
We may need some redevelopment projects in future to fix them.

Corruption started late but early in life
For a six month period between 1998 and 1999, I spent quite a lot of time in Delhi. As a backpacker I saw the best and worst of what the city had to offer, but it had an undeniable spirit and heart. I’m really glad to see some of the positives that this well-researched video highlights so eloquently. All the best to Delhi and the whole of India.

1. CCTV installation has brought down the crime in Delhi.
2. Lighted streets made safe to travel at night.
3. New gov reduced corruption
4. Gov school and students are much better than in past.

It's so easy to stop infra projects by denying to sell land and then asking 10-15 times of the actual value. So many projects have been canceled as costs keep rising because of the delay.

@@TDC_TheDocumentaryChannel . Hello and I hope you’re doing well. My first trip was purely as a tourist. We saw The Taj Mahal, Mecca, Mumbai, The Red Fort. I was in complete awe all of my visit. During that visit I met a wonderful local woman, we exchanged numbers and became very close over the next three years. Which is what involved my second. Her family invited me to stay with them for a month on a farm in Gujarat. Most people probably wouldn’t have considered it a vacation because I worked right along with them, but for me it was one of my best memories. And it was that visit when I fell in love with the Indian people. They were the warmed, accepting people and we’ve stayed in contact. I’d like to consider them family at this point. Sorry this reply was probably longer than you expected. Thank you again for producing the video. I wish you all the success.

Ths video has shown more of the history of Delhi rather than the current state of Delhi. I am a resident of Delhi and I can tell you that the Delhi that you have shown is at least 10 years old and you have also shown the wrong map of India. Just some old video clips don't make your video authentic but you have correctly shown about the DDA.

I really don't think electric cars are the 'solution' to a city of 32.1million people, projected to grow to 40 million. Western cities are just now starting to realise the error of their ways--or in Amsterdam's case, they've known for half a century--now is absolutely the worst possible time to make as colossal a mistake as investing in the automobile.
Before cars people walked and cycled in the cities, now we are realising cars destroy cities and going back to the basics.
No India has decided that it will have a metro train inside major cities and huge 12-20 lane highways connecting them. But how to connect primary stops from metro to secondary stops is a proble.
Public transportation is what our Cities need and considering how almost all our major megacities are in need of almost total redevelopment in major parts of their cities it's possibly the best time to lay out a future model of cities centred around public transportation,quality of life,public and social happiness,and maximum residential and commercial efficiency now as we eventually put major parts of our cities into total redevelopment in the coming 2 decades.
Mass Public transport is the way to go
EVs are part of the solution. I agree that we should move away from being dependent on cars but cars will still have to serve some purpose in future cities. Therefore, they might as well be electric.

Amazingly done. Just to point out auto rickshaw in Delhi are all CNG powered thereby quite eco friendly in comparison to diesel and petrol powered cars. For that matter, you’d be glad to know that all the public transport even the large government buses are CNG powered or are electric.
10:15 Let me clarify this part, The reason why the Delhi Assembly needs permission from the Lieutenant Governor is because Delhi is not a full fledged state/province, rather it falls within a category called "Union Territory", A Union territory is basically Land that the Central government controls and has high authority over. Regular states in India are just the same as American states with minor differences.

In regular states, public elected leaders hold power and responsibility, whereas in Union territories, the central government is usually the De facto authority, Delhi has its own assembly only because for an UT, it has very high population.

Yes. There are now super wealthy people who are lifting up the rest of the country with them. A small % of the population is creating immense wealth and opportunities. Nigeria may have a bigger per capita (over 20%) but what's the point when India has a higher PPP (about 20%), meaning they get more in real terms, for their money. As a Nigerian I hope you see my point.
Nigeria has a higher GDP because it is specialized in oil exports, India's nominal gdp is low because it produces a lot of goods and services for domestic consumption that are not exported. In HDI terms Nigeria is at 0.54 and India is at 0.65 - quite a big difference. That said Nigeria's coast-adjacent areas seem to have HDI comparable to India - hopefully we see big gdp growth there soon.
@@AKumar-co7oe It is a common misconception that the GDP of Nigeria is based on oil. It makes up less than 10% of GDP. Federal Government revenues is made up significantly of oil exports though. Approximately 55% of Nigeria's GDP is services. Insurgency right across Northern Nigeria and Middle Belt with it's attendant displacement means productivity there is seriously hampered. However it is true the South of the country has much higher HDI, far lower maternal and infant mortality, children out of school and much higher living standards. The latest figures indicating poverty reaching 88% in the North and no lower than 45%. While in the Middle Belt between 22 - 38%,South East it trends at about 24% and South West 12% and as low as 4.5%. So you see it is a very diverse economic outlook. Historically Northern Nigeria has always had poor economic indicators which is why the ' British merged to separate entities ( while effectively splitting it in India) to form Nigeria in 1914 out of North Nigeria and South Nigeria. Southern indicators, particularly South West, usually outperforms India. As you may know we are have been the most successful immigrants to USA for sometime now, out perform all other ethnic groups educationally in UK and more recently our music has gone global. I've heard it even in Portugal. That being said with the utterly inept and corrupt set of people we continually have in government, India is making far greater strides moving forward.

Uttrakhand 3000$ 300 million people approx 1 billion population is rich middle-class

@@yanmi2148 Oil may be a small part of the GDP, but it's a big part of Nigeria's external trade - making up 85% of exports. This in turn increases the demand for Nigerian currency and makes it stronger. India is a net importer of oil which depresses the value of Indian currency. On the other hand this weaker currency has over the years forced india to invest into education and manufacturing to do value addition - while Nigeria has what is known as the "resource curse" or "dutch disease" - India exports more software services than Saudi Arabia does oil.

What they really need here is electric trams. I went to Delhi some years ago and despite being ripped off everywhere, being subjected to harassment for foreign currency etc, nobody having change in any shop , it was obvious that the city was hopelessly polluted. Get all those scooters and other polluting vehicles off the road, before it becomes uninhabitable.
So true. I visited Delhi a few days back, was rather surprised to see inequality. And the sewage going right through the heart of the in open. Disgusted and surprised at the same time.

Delhi is a horrible city, I say this as a British Indian who visits India, I come from the South, Hyderabad, Delhi is full of scammers and rude guys. Please don't judge the rest of India like this. The South is much better, if you do ever visit again please make sure you go to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kerala, these are super modern cities with ancient history, the people are much kinder in their hearts and stay close to true Hindu values such as treating a guest to our home like God, you will find higher English literacy rates, more smiles and scamming is practically non existent as people hope true Hindu values of karma much closer to their hearts so they are better in their hearts, even auto drivers and Street food vendors have refused to take extra money for me as they believe in honest life and honest work, for example the scammers of India live in the North like Calcutta and Delhi, whereas Hyderabad to Bangalore and Chennai is known as the tech corridor with a lot of Western banks and tech companies having massive offices, there's a lot of white people and black people living there happily and they do not get scammed like they do in the North. Please reserve judgement until you visit the south and receive true Hindu hospitality 🙏🏾
Delhi has a very large network of METRO rail which even covers neighbouring satellite cities. I can understand your unfortunate experience but as someone who has lived in Delhi for a few years, Delhi metro is the most convenient mode of public transportation that I miss quite a lot after moving out of the city. Did you use the metro at any point of your travel?
I spent some time in Delhi earlier this year and I had a great experience. People were kind and helpful, the hustle and bustle was spirited and colorful, and the street food was so cool even just to look at! What a life experience! I felt safe the whole time as a solo female traveler, too. I love India I can’t wait to be back:)

My India Great India will be the world leader once again! We are coming !! The expressways and metro constructions are at a record pace. The rail freight network is being expanded across the nation. The contributions from solar and wind energy are increasing day by day. The manufacturing sector is gaining momentum, especially mobile manufacturing, car manufacturing, etc. We are becoming more self-reliant and I believe that India has the power to move from a developing nation to a developed nation in the next 25-30 years and once that happens it will change the global perception of India

I think its important to distinguish, when you say its GDP per capita is less than the Congo, this is referring to the much less well known oil-rich Republic of the Congo, not the far more populous and influential DR Congo.

Just come across this channel today, great job with this documentary especially identifying how License Raj has crippled India for decades, not just Delhi alone. Now I live in USA and each time I visit (South India) the development has been great, new luxury outskirts with good infra . hearing many mega Road, rail, and airports etc are under construction will be completed by 2024. Indians needs more infra before it's declared as most populated country, for good or bad we can't control the population there.

It's funny how every city becomes a lot more powerful and stable once it builds out good public transit. Maybe with the exception of a few American cities, but even then compare those with cities like New York, Tokyo, London, etc. and the difference in economical influence is massive.

A minor correction, British did not take over India in 1757. That year British East India Company helped install a ruler in an Eastern province (Bengal) who allowed them wide rage of trade concessions within his dominion. For the next 100 years, British fought relentlessly to expand its influence in different other parts. Delhi fell to the British in 1857. British only had direct control over 49 % of India's territory. Rest were semi autonomous, self governing Princely States (565 in total).
