  • In this video I use the HP-50G to solve quadratics, linear systems, polynomial systems, nonlinear systems, and straight up messy systems.

    Fantastic lesson vide for the 50g! Much better organized and helpful than anything I have seen or read for isolating variables!

    Long ago, but thanks for the great presentation. It helped a lot. I just began and wasn't sure about the polynomial equations.

    I tried your third example on my "real" HP 50g running ROM "Version HP-50C Revision #2.15" (the newest one I've found), and it gives me the exact same error you got when trying to solve it on ~ (APPROX) mode, so it doesn't seems to be a problem of your emulator.

    With my real 50g calculator, I tested what you demonstrated at 2:57 in your simulator. When pressing the rightmost "SOLVE" softmenu, I get the same "SOLVE Error: Not exact system" message in Approx Mode. If I then change to Exact Mode and try it, my 50g beeps and then shows me a choose box that says: "Approx. mode on? YES NO". If I choose NO, I get "SOLVE Error: Mode switch cancelled." If I choose YES, I get "SOLVE Error: Not exact system." In other words, my real 50g is unable to solve it either way. Clearly, there must be some Flag differences that must be enabling you to solve it on the simulator.

    Hello. First of all, I wanted to thank you for making this and all your other videos, they're helping me a lot.
    I tried your first example and it worked wonderfully on my "real" 50g, but then, for the second example, it gave me the "LINSOLVE Error: Invalid Dimension" over and over again, and I haven't managed to figure out what the problem is yet. I'm on the CASDIR folder inside HOME, on RAD mode, "XYZ" to it's right (not sure what those mean yet), and HEX to the right of that as well (also not sure, but I think this is kinda the "secondary base", or "base to convert to if asked"), on the R ("Reals", as far as I know), ~ (APPROX, but also tried it on = (EXACT)), the variable on the top there is 'X', I'm on RPN mode, and I did set both flags that display arrays vertically instead of horizontally, so as far as I know all the important settings are exactly like yours, and my screen looks almost identical to yours just before asking it to solve, but it doesn't give me a result. Any help is appreciated.

      Ok, I Googled that error and it seems like it's actually a known bug for the ROM I'm using (Version HP50-C Revision #2.08), so I'll try to update it to a newer one and see if it solves. If I remember to, I'll reply here with the results. Either way, I think this is worth a mention in the description, as probably everyone running this ROM will face this issue.

    Hi, a quick question
    I can do this with no trouble but why aren't the equations showing in an array all tiny like yours in the video?

    • @CristiNeagu
      @CristiNeagu 4 года назад

      You need to set flags -97 and -98 for the array display, and flags -72 and -80 for the small stack font. You can play around with more settings in MODE -> CAS to get small fonts for the various other editors.

I have a question about something that I found very useful, the results are displayed in a column (the values of the calculated variables appear one on top of the other) and not in a line (one next to the other), could you explain how to configure this ?

    so at 1:55 how did you change from that textbook display for the arrays to the other one? cuz my calculator always uses the other one( puts it in brackets) i am wondering how i coul get it to use the textbook like appearance, am using mini stack btw

    Tried this in the HP Prime simulator. It's a better experience to input all the equations, and the output is easier to read. But the funny thing is that "Just a mess" crashed it xD

    Hey! I really enjoyed the video! Do you know what to do when you create an array but it's in the horizontal position (like 1x3 matrix) instead of vertical position as on your video (3x1 matrix). Cheers mate!

    • @crclayton

  • @ChrisBorchert

    Thanks so much for the video! I have one quick question that I've been unable to find the answer for elsewhere:
    My HP50g sometimes has extra brackets in the solution when I use some of the solve functions. For instance, the calculator may output V0=-(4*V1-5*V3) as a solution, and although this is correct, I would prefer V0=5*V3-4*V1 and I am prone to making simple errors in later hand calculations when the solution is more complex and I am rearranging it myself. Is there a system flag for this? Using the simplify function seems to have no effect.

    • @crclayton
      @crclayton  7 лет назад +1

      Try checking flag 114. It simplies the brackets in you example equation, although I'm not sure it'll work universally.

  • @Kiatirie
    @Kiatirie 7 лет назад

    Hi, this was very helpful! If I had an equation, let's say 3x + 4y = 18, how would I graph that? I've only been able to graph equations where Y= (somethingsomething x), and I'm not sure how I would graph equations where I can't easily just manipulate the equation algebraically to isolate Y.

    I'm having trouble entering your fourth example on RPN mode. The first equation went well, but on the second one, I managed to get (3*X)/Y on the stack, but once I press the square root key, it turns it into 1/|Y|*SQROOT(Y*X)*SQROOT(3) which I suppose means the same thing as SQROOT((3*X)/Y) but it's not nearly as pleasant to read or to work with. How did you manage to enter that on RPN mode? Any help is appreciated.

    • @Micaeljm
      @Micaeljm 6 лет назад

      By the way, I managed to enter it using the EQW tool, but I managed to enter everything else without using it, so yeah, it feels like cheating... Knowing how to enter it straight away on RPN mode would be much better, IMO.
