    my favorite line for the series was from Alexandra "They will disappoint you". this one line served as the perfect metaphor for both the series AND the Hand itself with the somewhat nice build up only to slap you in the face later to make you go "WHAT. THE. F@#&!"

  • @lifeloverNorris
    @lifeloverNorris 6 лет назад +1

    The Hand's most tangible threat happened not in Defenders s1 but Daredevil season 2, when they attack the hospital. Pretty much the only time when I felt that Hand is legitimately a problem and should be dealt with.

  • @karnak333

    LMAO.... Man, you hit pretty much everything I've had a problem with. I totally agree with the Elektra turn. I remember her saying to Matt that "this is who i've always been [EVIL]" ....And I thought "Are you?". Her character turn was weak; no foreshadowing, and weak motivation. Bad writing.
    Also, this show was really cheap. As an event series for Netflix, I thought they would have put more money into, maybe they did spend a ton but it didn't show up on the screen. And that rap song in the final fight scene was absolutely atrocious and jarring, why did they think that was a good idea?

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 лет назад +5

      The only thing I can think of with the rap song is that it worked really well to mark Luke's entrance to the big fight scene in Episode 3, and I guess they thought it was worth redoing... except it's a rehash that doesn't serve the same function and the moment doesn't feel right at all the second time.

    • @C1eric
      @C1eric 7 лет назад +1

      Egor's Egor I agree. Genuinely said to my wife "I don't even know what the hell I'm watching right now" when that rap song came on.

    • @xilyria
      @xilyria 7 лет назад

      Why is everyone pissed about the rap song? I don't listen to rap but that song fit very well to me if you actually looked up the lyrics. The song is by wu tang clan and each rapper has their own part in the song. Kinda like how the defenders come together, this song has about 8 or 9 rappers singing about protecting their city as street level people, just like the defenders. Please don't judge the song just because you Don't like the style or genre

    • @C1eric
      @C1eric 7 лет назад +1

      Klokparty don't think anyone is saying the song is bad dude, and whilst from the sound of it it should have been a good fit on paper it just didn't work in reality.

    • @xilyria
      @xilyria 7 лет назад

      I'm not saying people think it's a bad song, I'm saying people think it's out of place when really it isn't. And most people that think it is out of place only think that cause they don't listen to rap. "Most" people, not all.

    Lol, I didn't care for the Hand back in DD S02. You mean to tell us a superstitious band of wankers are the main villain at the end? Damn, not going to waste my time on the show then.

  • @assafelron1
    @assafelron1 7 лет назад +7

    Totally agree... it was horrible...
    A couple more things to add:
    1. they conquered kunlon the previous iron fist season... so how come they can't "go back" to kunlon now? that's rediculus
    2. the plot the second half of the season was no where to be found... they stretched everything to infinity, jessica visiting the
    same familiy 3 freaking times to find clues... nearly nothing freaking happened for in 5-7 episodes

    • @irrevenant3
      @irrevenant3 7 лет назад

      It's unclear what happened at Kun-Lun. The Hand attacked it and it was gone by the time Danny got there. Defenders implies that the connection to Kun-Lun closed before the Hand could seize it.

    Alexandra was dying, she feared death, she had nothing left to lose. Her wanting to return to Kunlung I would get, she'd want to see her home one last time, but Electra and the other members of the hand? I don't know wtf they want to do when they get to Kunlung, sit around and have tea? Read books? Rub Madam Gows feet I don't know! I liked the tease for Season 3 of Daredevil, I can't wait for the born again story arc to play out.

  • @ishaandw

  • @TheTimChandler
    @TheTimChandler 7 лет назад +3

    I think you summed up for me the problems I had with Defenders, which I hadn't quite found the words to express on my own. Alexandra's death was the turning point between great potential and formulaic. I really never card much for Elektra, so by the end of this 8 hours I felt I had way too much of her and just wanted her to go away. Jessica and Luke, who are the most down-to-earth heroes, were relegated to sidelines. The supporting cast could have had some nice shining moments but instead were just sitting in chairs at a police station. The Hand was just anonymously dull as a threat. Throw in a couple more earthquakes and I could believe the threat to NYC. I also think Netflix went cheap on the production. I didn't really think about the shooting schedule as an obstacle, but the points you made there made sense - they hadn't had time to learn and adjust from previous mistakes. I do want to see Defenders season 2, hopefully they will learn from these previous shows and give us something stronger.

  • @karnak333
    @karnak333 7 лет назад +10

    I thought "Nice, 8 episodes! That probably means it'll be tightly written and filmed, with great villains and a good production budget"... Boy, was I was wrong. This show was a disappointment.

  • @JoelBrandonMedia
    @JoelBrandonMedia 7 лет назад +5

    I agree, the Black Sky is the most idiotic and vague plot point known to man and it just seemed like a convenient way to bring Elektra back. The villain's story arc was TERRIBLE, so SLOW, confusing, and did not pay off at all. Didn't they achieve what they were trying to achieve?? But then they died?? Ughh it was a mess. Also, the Daredevil fake death with the shot of Iron Fist on the roof was CHEAP....and they have some serious explaining to do with how Matt survives - I assume it's the elixir or whatnot, but damn, that shit doesn't make sense....

  • @RawbeardX
    @RawbeardX 7 лет назад +5

    Remember how Stick killed a little boy because he was a Black Sky and the world would end if the Hand got their hand (giggle) on him? I bet Stick felt pretty silly now. wonder how many little children the Chaste have killed for no reason.

    I don't understand why anyone is not talking about the scene where Luke from out of nowhere brings a detonator.. How did he know that Colleen was bringing C4. And did you see how they were deploying to C4?? Like stacking up soap bars on supermarket shelves and out of no where the detonator gets connected to the explosives and starts up on itself. Any takers??

    • @Aaron-zt5ee
      @Aaron-zt5ee 7 лет назад +6

      The detonator was in the bag of C4. I'm not sure why you thought Luke brought it. He mentioned how it works, which is in keeping with him going off to basic training as a kid and his career as a cop, but he didn't have the detonator with him.

    Can you do reviews on the Arrowverse shows as well? (At least just Legends S2 cause I loved every episode)

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 лет назад +2

      The main reason I don't is that I don't watch them as they air. I catch Legends, Supergirl & Flash on Netflix (Arrow doesn't really interest me outside the crossovers) months after the seasons wrap up. I kind of figured not enough people would really want to hear my thoughts on months old episodes.
      Actually the shows I watch as they air is a pretty short list. It's basically just Doctor Who and Game of Thrones. I try to get to some Netflix stuff close to when it goes live but most things fall into the "when I get around to it" bucket.

  • @ny4lyfe19

  • @mladenstific2459
    @mladenstific2459 7 лет назад +3

    The writing is the main problem, I think. In Luke Cage, switching the villain made sense to reveal the systemic evil that rushes to fill the vacuum. In this show, I don't see a message and I don't really believe there is one. This show HAS NO LAYERS. At all. It is entirely on the nose. One-liners like "We meet again" and that scene where Jessica runs over Elektra with a car and then lets her get up just so she can pose in a lineup with other heroes?! It's just cringey to see Jessica and Luke, characters written so well in their own shows having obviously forced moments of inane dialogue. Maybe in this universe Killgrave is alive and working with Zack Snyder to exact revenge on them.

    I did not expect to agree with you as much as I did. You pretty much hit the nail on the head blow for blow. You even gave an explanation that I had not considered for why many of these series' seem hampered after the open volley of episodes: IE writers not grasping serialized formats. The only thing I could add would be that after the opening episodes these series' are starting to lose interest their characters and focus too much on the the characters reacting to everything that happens as the plot gears up...and nothing else. Action and reaction until it all just bleeds together. When you pair that with villains who have no determinable aims other than 'Kill {enter hero name here}," you end up stuck with scenes of bad guys that stand in rooms giving giant self aggrandizing speeches over and over again while they fail at raising the stakes because they only ever want "Luke Cage Dead!"
    Damn good review. Loved the rant about "Black Sky! Black Sky!" That was ME screaming at the Television! lol

    Elektra's motivations were that she wanted to take control of her fate. Like you said, she was going for someone else's agenda up until that point, and her dialogue with iron fist at the end explained that she wanted to defy her masters and become immortal

    • @11informer11
      @11informer11 7 лет назад +2

      Gabe's Channel E443 But she theoretically would've been had she been subservient to the Hand since in the end they were both after the "substance" for survival. So much inconsistencies with the shows depiction of the Hand.

    • @brucesnow7125
      @brucesnow7125 7 лет назад +2

      DestroyerOfSandwiches not really, she was completely out of control. She remembers her past and how Hand killed her and that and Black Sky thing just create completely new personality. She isn't doing logical stuff, she is acting out of conflicted and corrupted emotions.

    • @HoustonSoto
      @HoustonSoto 7 лет назад +2

      Gabe's Channel E443 taking control of her fate is one thing, suddenly wanting to assist the Hand in destroying NYC to get their magic elixir made no sense.

    • @brucesnow7125
      @brucesnow7125 7 лет назад

      Cris Oliveira remain immortal? What the hell lol? Hand used all their substance on her so she is more than able to die, there is no such evidence, what are you talking about? All she wants is to be immortal, that's her reach, her mind is completely broken so she would do anything just not to experience death again. She never wanted Matthew dead, what are you talking about? In fact she kills Alexandra when she tells her to kill Matt and others with him. In the end she was ok to die alongside Matt, but she didn't want it at all. Which show did you watch?

  • @-441-
    @-441- 7 лет назад

    I think Madame Gao summed up it up best when she asked Elektra,
    "Alexandra had multiple worldwide connections in many international business and various relationships with organizations. How will we explain her death??" (or something to that effect, haven't re-watched since it's release date)
    Elektra: "Don't care."

    I really hope season 2 has them dealing with a fully fledged kingpin and act as a crime drama similar to daredevil season 1. It could also feature the Punisher (seeing him interact with the rest of the defenders would be amazing) and maybe some other characters.

    well I'm glad someone got something out of Alexandra because i honestly thought she was the weakest part of the show not only was she the least interesting member of the hand imo but when Electra killed her all i could think was "well they just killed one villian i didnt care about for another villian i dont care about" i think this show really needed a Loki and what i mean by that is it needed one of the big bads from any of the other series Kingpin might have worked best but i would have even taken Diemondback or anyone over Alexandra (and yes i know the hand was in the other shows but they are just kinda and evil organization we needed a head villian who wasnt shit)

    In the seventh episode the first 15 minutes are spent in the police station having the usual "you need to tell us what is going on" crap. Seriously? Have they not heard of pacing? By that point I expect the heroes to be punching limbs off of zombie Hand footsoldiers to find Danny, not sitting about trying to deal with the cops.
    When you said that the three fingers of the hand show up in the carpark to fight the defenders instead of the henchman I totally agree. I thought that at the time. So stupid.

    Ehhh... I'm not sure the immediate fan feedback of network shows is necessarily a positive thing. Granted, I don't really watch network shows outside of the CW DC shows, but fan feedback either doesn't actually take effect until the next season or they go overboard and completely derail a season. Two examples come to mind and that's Oliver and Felicity relationship in season 3 of Arrow, and Mon-El's increasingly bigger role in season 2 of Supergirl. They were both things that people initially liked in the beginning of the season that they doubled down on and became problems. I think the bigger issue is that they're rushing production to meet deadlines. I think it's emblematic in how Finn Jones was talking about the choreography where he said at the beginning of production, they had plenty of time to learn and practice but by the end, it was basically the same as Iron Fist where they were learning the choreography the day of.

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 лет назад +2

      The rush is certainly a contributor (especially in the case of Iron Fist.) And I'm not saying the affect of fan feedback always works. It can go wrong the same way that a creator making an entire season before anything airs can go either right or wrong.

    • @sonicdihedgehog1
      @sonicdihedgehog1 7 лет назад +3

      Well, It Seems That There Are Actually Gonna Be Improving Alot Of Things For Iron Fist In The Next Season Seeing As How The Showrunner Did Falling Skies And Sleepy Hollow And Is A Big Fan Of The Character. Plus, Finn Jones Has Alot More Time To Train Before The Filming Of That Season Starts Which Is Actually In 4-5 Months. So, We Could Expect To See Some Improvements There. Same Would Probably Go For The Defenders Soon Enough As Well As Daredevil In Its Filming Date.

      The fact that Oliver and Felicity had a relationship was fine. The problem was the execution - the writers started writing Felicity in particular woefully out of character.
      Mon-El IMO was always going to be increasingly important as the season progressed - he was the underlying foundation of the season's big bad.

  • @rogueslayer0
    @rogueslayer0 6 лет назад

    I really enjoyed Defenders, but I am biased as Elektra is my favorite Marvel character. I didn't watch Daredevil until it was announced that Elektra would be in Season 2. And then I learned Douglas Petrie was going to be the showrunner for that season and I was in. On Buffy, he tended to write the Faith-centric episodes, and in the commentary for one of the Faith episodes, he said Faith is their homage to Elektra. So, perhaps I never questioned her motives or goals, as, at least when it comes to the Netflix Elektra, I view Elektra and Faith as the same, so what I didn't know about this Elektra, I filled in from what I knew of Faith.
    I also loved her in Defenders. The moment when she kills Alexandra, I felt was her taking control of her own agency (and I likened her return from death to that of Fred's transition to Illyria in Angel.) I loved the new costume for her and I loved the reunion with Matt. I only watched it once when it came out, so perhaps I should re-watch it without my Elektra-colored glasses on to truly gauge how I feel about it.

  • @ClonePilotSwoop
    @ClonePilotSwoop 7 лет назад +1

    I agree, Alexandra was doing really well and then, boom... And, after Defenders, while I was entertained, it made me want to go watch a series that was done better... DC's Legends of Tomorrow. I also hope that Defenders does a S2 and it gets better, but being vague and mysterious does not help and the ending... My God... can you f'ing let death mean something? Just in case someone hasn't seen I'll omit the name, but (omitted) "dies" and rather than let that breath and make us wonder until we see a new season of whatever show wants to explain it... They show (omitted) at the end, perfectly alive. That is such a Marvel thing to do. Let us as the viewers wonder. And with The Hand, the Fingers wanting to get back to Kun Lun... I agree. Why? Even after The Door is opened, it didn't take them to Kun Lun, it was just a damn skeleton of a Dragon? WHAT???

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 лет назад +1

      I really love Legends of Tomorrow and I'm so psyched for the next season. I hope they snag Matt Ryan as Constantine like they want to. I want to hear what nickname Mick gives him.And yeah... that dragon. How many times are they going to tease us with a dragon and totally fail to give us a dragon? The only reason I didn't go off more on that is I hit my boiling point on it when I did my Iron Fist overall season review. One of the few times I had to use the ol' censor bleep.

    • @sonicdihedgehog1
      @sonicdihedgehog1 7 лет назад

      1) The Show Actually Had To Set Up A Story For The Next Season Just To Develop The Characters, Stories, And Even The Villain More And As For The Dragons, While Not Explained, I Think They Really Needed Them To Just Get Back Into Their Own World. I Also Kinda Disagree With It Being A Bit Weaker Than Legends Of Tomorrow. While Legends Of Tomorrow Was Good, It Does Some A Bit Weak In Terms Of Some Characters, Chemistry, And Even Dialogue Whereas The Defenders Was Actually The Opposite Of That. While Legends Of Tomorrow Seem To Have Some Great Villains, The Characters Just Seemed To Be A Bit Eh Compared To Some Of The Characters From The Defenders.

    In the comics the Black Sky is a demon that the Hand worships. Elektra was meant to be the vessel for that demon. In the show she’s just got amnesia but for some reason everyone is treating her like she’s possessed. Daredevil is like “I can get through to her.” I don’t think communication was the problem dude.

    I was very surprised to actually enjoy Danny to some extent after disliking him in Iron Fist pretty severely. But there was just no story here without Alexandra. Some good and some bad fights, and otherwise all I really enjoyed was the way each characters scenes were lit and shot, especially when they wound up in the same scene together. The visual cues were amazing if you can stomach a second go round and really pick them out. Otherwise, hoping for the best for the next outing.

      Maybe in a "relative to time" thing, since Elodie Yung gets FAR more screentime than Jennifer Garner got (yet gets proportionately less development in contrast)?
      In any case, Garner to her credit HATED the solo "Elektra" film and was contracted to do it. I do think she felt more positively about "Daredevil" though, and for all its faults (even in the director's cut) there were things it did RIGHT... Not that they don't share the occasional strength (both had a wonderful Kingpin - RIP Michael Clarke Duncan), but damn is it frustrating when something which was done better in a more mediocre product gets done WORSE in what was in many ways, a superior product (let's not get into how the shows have suffered as they tried to interconnect
      Gods, I just really hope that when (not if) the Netflix MCU shows introduce Bullseye, they don't mess him up like they did the Hand, or poor Cottonmouth. Given Mike Colter admitted he got why people were upset with the Cottonmouth-Diamondback switch, hopefully the next season of "Luke Cage" (which will bring back Mariah Dillard and Shades at least) doesn't just assume a shock-value death is going to make underdeveloped and uninteresting villains any LESS underdeveloped and uninteresting... Not just villains either - Danny Rand needs MASSIVE course correction as a character given how insufferable he continues to be (if not so badly) because they clearly want to keep "Iron Fist" going with more seasons, and if Colleen and the Meachams are any indication there IS stuff to keep from that still going forward.
      I mean, just imagine if BTVS had been a Netflix show. Imagine if Joss Whedon had gone through with his original plan for Season 2, and killed off Spike - the one vampire who defeated TWO slayers previously - in Episode 10 with only his fifth appearance. Wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying as what we got, which was one of the more fleshed-out characters in the setting (and particularly, within just BTVS as opposed to on "Angel"); true, people had issues with Spike being rendered harmless by the chip and stuff later on, but I'll always love how we got into the psychology of his character and how he affected things (the Slayer death wish especially hooked me).

    There are serious logical flaws with how the show treats the "substance".
    First of all, if there was only enough of the "substance" for one more resurrection, why were the other four fingers of the Hand so pissed off at Alexandra over using it for Elektra? In the best case scenario, Alexandra herself uses it a few weeks from now when she drops dead. And yes, I know she doesn't reveal to them that she is dying. But even then, they should be operating under the knowledge that only the *first* of them to die will get to use it. Their reaction seems too over-the-top.
    Furthermore, they keep going on about "eternal life". Is the NYC dragon any more special than any of the other dragons they've unearthed? Because if they were kicked out of K'un-Lun "centuries ago" but they're already out of the substance, it can't last that long. How many other dragon skeletons did they need to survive those centuries, and how many can one more skeleton possibly last them? What's "eternal" about that?

    The issue with Elektra is that this isn’t actually Elektra, as a character. MCU Elektra bares mostly no resemblance to 616 Elektra, which would be fine, if (as you’ve stated) she had a clear motivation and agenda of her own.
    The writers really don’t understand the character, and, thusly, don’t know what the hell to do with her.
    PS while Alexandra was wasted, her death was my favorite scene in the entire season, because it felt the most like the Elektra from the comics.

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 лет назад +1

      I've heard that elsewhere about Elektra, but I don't think it has to be slavishly loyal to the comic book source in order to work, as long as she's a solid character in her own right. And she just isn't.

    • @CrisWearsBlack
      @CrisWearsBlack 7 лет назад

      Council of Geeks I totally agree. It’s why characters like Catwoman, from Batman Returns, work. She’s not accurate to the comics, but she’s an interesting, fleshed out character in her own right, with her own motivations/agenda.
      MCU Elektra lacks any of the above stated.

    Finally, a critic on RUclips that got this review right. Couldn't agree with you more. I hate the sissies out there who say, it's amazing, to see all are superheroes together. Sorry people, that's not enough! You have to have a good plot, care about the actors, good visuals and great fight scenes. That was sorely lacking in the Defenders. Just because you like superheroes, doesn't mean you have to like every single show and movie that comes out. Really nice to hear somebody who speaks the truth. Keep up the good work

    SPOILERS ------- I agree! It took me 3 tries to get through the last episode. A big problem is killing the villain off 1/2 way through the season yet again. All the story around her wasn't the best but killing here made it a waste. Electra is just overused at this point in the Marvel shows. I was never invested in this "Am I good or bad?" tango Electra and Daredevil dance around in for yet ANOTHER season. There are more villain problems though. They treat The Hand as useless, bumbling idiots throughout the show. I was extremely let down in the final fight with The Hand, and really, all their fights. They are only used to slow the heroes down a tad bit. For instance, in episode 8 at 23:30 when they are fighting under the building, The Defenders have The Hand members defeated and rolling on the ground. Then The Defenders just stand there for a minute talking among themselves while they let The Hand slowly get up and recompose. People die in these shows! How is there not even one of The Hand members dead, knocked out, or too wounded to get up at that point? They are fighting people with superpowers after all! ...... I mean, I thought they were going to make The Hand tea or something. Why not finish The Hand off before they got up? Zombieland rule number 2: DOUBLE TAP! Lol. Next, there are 2 guys with machine guns that start off shooting the only person they KNOW is bulletproof before they aim at someone else, lol. I thought they were trained assassins... why would they even shoot at him in the first place? That's just the start. I can't get into it all here though. Did you agree or disagree?

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 лет назад +1

      The Hand suffers badly from Inverse Ninja Theory, which states that a single ninja is a deadly nearly impossible to battle assassin, but the more ninjas there are the easier each one becomes to defeat.

    I actually really enjoyed it all apart from one thing I don't like one of the villains killing off another like they did in Luke Cage I loved Cottenmouth and when I'm bored I might rewatch just his episodes but I think copying it again was soooooo annoying but I loved the way she felt human with her disease made it feel like this series was grounded but I beg that the kingpin is the villain for Punisher I just think Kingpin trying to kill Punisher for the whole series with Punisher trying to take him out like an on going war between the 2 then neither die and Daredevil season 3 adds to the story while adding Bullseye which we all know is gonna happen. I'm not a huge Marvel fan I use to be but gone off it after Doctor Strange I wasn't that impressed and not that invested anymore tbh I love the Marvel Netflix, Gotham is amazing and prefer Deadpool + Logan and Batman obvs

  • @dyerdude8490
    @dyerdude8490 7 лет назад

    I also didn't enjoy the Hand story in Daredevil season 2 I would have rather of it been more a mystery and Matt has to use his legal pulls to join the dots to try discover the hand then maybe have to layed out in Defenders but I enjoyed there story arc end in Defenders but I think this guy is being very critical like ur aloud to enjoy and not enjoy a series but because Iron Fist wasn't its best don't mean u need to hate the character when there changing the direction like there can't be one man army like Killgrave or Kingpin or Cottenmouth even tho they are all incredible they need a bigger foe to face. Daredevil was the best and still is the best in all of these series but could be because I have got to know him for longer and his "rebirth" will put him in a different direction

      Netflix: "Hey, do you remember those ninjas that we're invading the city in droves, climbing hospital walls, and resurrecting zombie children... They were cool, huh? Well, now in The Defenders you can watch them debate in a board room about some substance behind some wall that you couldn't care less about." ... Honestly, it's not just motivation, The Hand are not interesting to me anymore. They were cool in season 2; but the more Netflix stripped away, the more mundane they made them, especially in Ironfist.

If you can't understand obvious character development from her interaction and story with Daredevil then that's on you.
