Cheap Amazon 50kg Anvil Review

  • Today we're taking a look at the Fervi 50 kg Anvil, this was purchased from amazon for £350/$440, so far the anvil seems to be perfect, with my only major complaint being the colour, but thats easily fixed, there are also many other options out there, but a lot of the cheaper anvils of a similar size appear to be simply cast iron, and I doubt they have a hard face.
    A few months after i'd purchased this anvil, others of the same pattern started popping up on ebay, but whether these are any good is yet to be seen.

    the writing acciaio (steel) is in Italian because the shape of the anvil is the one used in Italy

    That hex bar looks and moves a lot like a Allen wrench, lol. Saving up for this anvil in 10 kg and a second in 50 kg…. Feels like having options will be a good idea….

    BTW good choice I think stripping the paint off with chems and water pressure ...another guy on RUclips used wire wheels and grinders and I was thinking "NOT good maybe to breath paint dust" Probably made in China and who knows what is in the paint lead or carcinogens etc? So good call by you I think

      Update after 2 months of hard use I'm thoroughly pleased. Mine came blue so I thru a coat of black paint on it but other than that I couldn't have asked for more bang for my buck

    Just ordered the exact same anvil for $291 (about 215 pound). Kind of excited to get it here so I can start pounding on some steel.

    I’m going to get the same one. It’s a bit less expensive in the US. Have you had a chance to use the hardy hole and make tooling? I was wondering what size it is. I think the 30kg is 5/8".

    • @harleyadam4813
      @harleyadam4813 3 года назад +1

      The hardy hole in the 30kg anvil is 3/4. I just ordered the 50kg anvil for $291. It's scheduled for delivery on 1/28. I'll measure the hardy hole then and let you know what to expect.

    I picked one up and it was poor quality. Heat treat cracks around the hardy hole and surface pitting. And the bic looked more like a ducks face more than a horn.

    Ooh look the round hole, half from flat part and the horn. I don't like it very much.

    Honestly, you're hammering in that knife stock TOO COLD. That metal should be into the YELLOW range.

      I forge outside, sun light is much brighter than inside a workshop , so the steel is much hotter than it looks on video!

      Looks like it depends on which sellers currently have stock, and the price seems vary with the different vendors.

    I know it would be fun to pound out a knife from some unknown hard steel but they sell knife blanks so cheap in really good steels of all sorts that it seems like not a great project to reinvent the wheel.

      Sounds like you've never pounded out a knife from a block of steel. It's a very enriching experience. Besides, would buying premade knife blanks be "reinventing the wheel"? Since knives have been pounded out of blocks of steel for thousands of years.

    WIERD WIERD thing is on Ebay they have what appears to be IDENTICAL Anvils for 250-300ish US dollars same color same letters on the side 50kg BUT most of the offerings say they are IRON! Some do say steel so I messaged one seller and asked "are you sure these are IRON cause some identical in appearance say steel and I know from several reviews the smaller version 66llbs with the same lettering ARE steel...the seller's answer? "No these are iron" Now is that bizarre or what? Maybe they got it turned around in their heads and think iron=good and steel=bad ....lol I don't know...I want to order one but frankly I am a bit scared they DID cast a bunch of these lately in iron! Which would SO bum me out!

      I reckon you're overthinking it. Many people call steel 'iron'. It's kind of interchangeable, because iron always has carbon in it (unless you get purified stuff from chemistry supply places), and carbon steels tend to be around 99% iron anyway. Another example would be 'cast iron', and how even though it's got more carbon than steel, it's often called simply 'iron'.
      A better question would be, "What percentage carbon is it, and how was it heat-treated?". But those questions won't be easy to get a real answer to.

      Since it is the same company and the same design, I'm thinking they've been seeing the popularity of their smaller anvil and people asking for a larger one, and made this one. I was gonna get the 66 pounder, but that's about the same weight as my piece of milled train track, so this one makes more sense to me, though if I can just get ahold of a guy near me who is selling a nice vintage Fisher anvil in the same weight range for the same price, then I might go with that instead.

    Why is the video without sound? That's really kool of you to upload it so that the max volume is inaudible to people that may have slight hearing loss. I honestly dont understand why people think they need to be the ones to limit the volume that somebody else listens to the video at. Just upload it so it can be loud, theres a volume button that goes all the way to off or as loud as it is now, people should be able to turn it up and hear what is being said. You realize this is RUclips right?

    • @s1v3bid
      @s1v3bid 3 года назад +2

      You should turn up your volume because this video is plenty loud
