I have always wondered how Indian people view Sellers' role here. You could claim that it was racist, but the way I look at it is that he's playing a funny man who happens to be Indian, rather than literally taking the p*ss out of Indian people. The Indian accent lends itself to comedy, at least to English ears, as well, but then so do many other accents. Sellers' own respect for Indian culture is shown in the opening titles, where Bakshi is playing the sitar in a serious respectful manner.
One of my favorite movies and characters of all time. Peter Sellers is a genius. And this mix is amazing and hilarious!
