Some great ideas, but the most important factor in not becoming a target is situational awareness. Whether you are avoiding pickpockets or getting out of a dangerous crowd situation before it erupts, or not becoming one of the victims in an active shooter event, being aware of your surroundings at all times is critical. Those socks saved me in Indonesia decades ago when our bus was held up and everyone robbed. I had enough cash for the day in my purse, which was stolen, along with my watch (not a very expensive one), but my passport was in a hidden pocket in my undies and my ID and credit card was in that zippered pocket in my socks. BTW, I hope your property wasn't damaged by the recent storms.

I am a big fan of the crossbody bags! Being a bigger buy (6'-1" and former bodybuilder) I always attracts a lot of attention, no matter what I wear. nothing I can really do about it. So I bought a very secure crossbody. It is military-looking, which I'm not too crazy about, but since I draw a lot of attention, I opted for security over looks.

Hi Laurie have been enjoying your videos lately and your tips are super helpful. One thing - i don’t carry a separate wallet . I stash 1 credit card inside the inner zipper of crossbody with some cash for the day . I also do not carry a passport wallet . I put passport in a ziploc in inside zipper . So if someone opens outside zipper no wallet or passport to take out and it won’t drop out accidentally either . I use the Kipling cross body with zippers outside and inside . I also have travelon in the past and may go back to it . A whole wallet is not necessary . I just put my id and my credit card in inside zipper . Carry the minimal possible for trips.

Hey Laurie, I was shopping this week for clothing my husband can wear for our Italy trip. FISHING SHIRTS!! May have UV protection, very light with ventilation as well as hidden pockets. Some are more obvious than others, but still would be harder to get into undetected. He already has some cargo style pants, but I might check to see if any of the fishing pants also have hidden pockets.

Always be aware of your surroundings , instead of a backpack , i rather take a crossbody bag for daily walking with just the things i need and in crowded areas always hold it in front of you and i always watch the direction of the zipper to be forward , nothing easier to steal in crowd from than a bag with the zipper at the backside. If you use bigger purse or backpack , have your phone and money inside a inner pocket of it , and never wide open to reach for it for the wrong eyes to see where you keep them.

Laurie, I recently went on a Tour Bus Trip to the coast of Ireland. I ordered several of your recommendations (cross body purse and rfd wallet). The first day was scheduled as a "free day" and we started in Dublin. While walking to a restaurant my daiughter wanted to go to, it was raining pretty steady and I was very wet and uncomfortable and needed to adjust my rain coat several times. We were a block from the restaurant when a young woman walking towards us stopped and said to me "Mam, I believe you've just been pick pocked". Everything stopped. I looked down at my cross body bag and it was unzipped, and the small wallet was lifted up - all my cash and my daughter's credit card was gone. By the time we called Visa, these thiefs had withdrawn $1400., and second withdrawal of $900 before the third wallet was denied. Then a trip to Dublin Police to file a report - very expensive lesson - folks, these people are good at what they do. I never felt a thing. Please be aware.

I love the scarf with the hidden pockets. I checked it out on Amazon Canada and it is $93 compared to $37 on the American Amazon. Going to have to pass on it.

One tip for women especially with the money belt is to turn it around so it's in the small of your back. So much more comfortable! Also, I sometimes bring a money belt like thing that goes around your calf. I put the top of my sock around it for added security. We've been around the world, and have never been robbed. Like you said be smart, be aware and you'll be fine.

Great tips. I didn’t like the scarf showed i had something in it. I might have put it on wrong.

The item may have been too big. I would stash some cash there or maybe a couple of cards.

The problem with the scarf with the secret pocket is that it would be way too easy to be forgetful and end up leaving the scarf behind somewhere...with your passport in it.

@DoReMeaCulpa That's why it is important to use an infinity Scarf! Take your Scarf... twist it once and sew the ends together!

I have used money belts for years...latest is RFID, of course, as well as an RFID small thing that can hang around your neck. My everyday card holder is an old PacSafe and it can even put my passport in it, snugly, and close the tab. I keep bills and coins separately as well as keeping my health cards, car insurance, medical card in another holder...I used to carry a full "clutch" wallet, but decided to separate all my important things into different holders, so not everything can be lifted at once! So, I try to be as safe as possible at home, too.

Has anyone purchased a VISA gift card to use in Europe? Keep the real cards in the these money belts and such. Just wandering how those worked over there? Might be good to use pre loaded cards for street vendors.
