3 Fashion Rules EVERYONE should Follow | How To Look Good ANYWHERE
I’ve always said that rules are meant to be broken - even when it comes to fashion. BUT (and this is a big BUT) there are THREE GOLDEN RULES that I believe everyone needs to know. These rules don't need to be followed ALL the time but if you can't quite figure out when an outfit isn't working it's often because you've broken one of these fashion rules. Balance and proportion are words you hear a lot about in fashion and I’m guilty of talking about them a lot too and that's why I wanted to share why these things are important and how understanding them can unlock the secret to great style.
Breaking any of these three rules can throw an otherwise great outfit off kilter and by making some small tweaks (aka following these rules) you can make any outfit shine - trust me.

My daughter (who's a fashion student) and i think the tan boots outfit with the tan bottom and black top is more fashionable than with the black boots 😊
Yes, I thought the same too. I like the tan boots outfit better. Maybe because I remember the rule about not wearing dark shoes with light pants?? I'm 57 so I've seen lots of fashion rules change over the years but once they are ingrained in one's head it is so hard to forget them. I'm really working hard on the don't wear white after Labour Day rule....lol. That is a hard one for me.
Yes I agree it’s not bad at all - I suppose my point was that if for some reason an outfit isn’t working and you’re not sure why - it is often one of these “rules” that’s throwing it off.
You can add a belt in the colour of the tan boots, maybe that's the finishing touch! 🥳 But anyway, love your videos!! 😘

Great tips!! The principles of design ( balance, line, rhythmn, repetition, pattern, 2/3rd or 3/5ths, etc) apply to all things visual whether 2D or 3D.

In the all-black outfit where you add the cream faux- fur coat, what happens if you go out for lunch for example and then take off your coat? You're back to an unbalanced outfit.
A lot of influencers show outfits that look great when they are complete with a coat but I always struggle to see how they still work once you take your coat off, take your bag off and take your sunglasses off as you are inside.
So true! I always like to leave the house and arrive looking put together and that’s enough. It’s great if it works regardless of the accessories but hey … it won’t always work 😊

If you are petite, the Petite Dressing channel is great for learning how to use this rule.
While I like the "sandwiching" effect, it probably shortens the vertically challenged.
Yes, I wholeheartedly agree because I am a huge fan of the second example but with white pants. I'm 5'4" so it shortens me a lot but I wonder if the shoes have anything to do with it.

It’s so easy to get stuck in the prior fashion trend, thank you for showing us the more modern ways to style our wardrobes! I love the three rules you gave us, I think that I can remember to use those principles when I’m playing around with my clothes😊

In photo, the ⅓-⅔ proportions also applies to left right. I'm petite and I found that wearing pencil skirts bellow the knee and sweater blouses gives me the ⅓-⅔ and slim bouffant relation.

I think your videos are fabulous and this is one of my favorites as it shows how a few changes in an outfit can really make it just right. They are not fashion rules. If you can tell, it is probably because you were born with a good "eye" - or have studied art or architecture, which has educated your eye

Hi Leoni! I really enjoy your videos! Question regarding the sandwich rule of color. I like the look but to look taller don't you want to match your shoes/boots to your pants? Thank you!!
Yes that definitely works and is great for lengthening the look of your legs. These rules are more about if your outfit is kind of looking off and you can't figure out why. Often it's one of these reasons but yes if you are shorter you may want to opt for the leg lengthening look - hope that makes sense?

Hi, this was very helpful and visual. I need a bit of help understanding though: i always thought we had to elongate our legs( rule of thirds). But when you put your black boots with the pale pants instead of the beige ones,aren’t you shortening the legs? Both options possible if you have very long legs?
On the well balanced sandwich outfit when you added the black belt with the tail hanging down I didn't like that tail in the middle. I feel it would look so much better pulled a bit more to the side.

Love the outfits I’m at a loss with finding a style and being with longer legs and short torso but long arms makes finding items my size impossible to find and fit I’m currently 5’8 & 1/2 and only weigh at best 125 and also I’ve just no sense of styling myself .

The sneakers just don't work for me. I would never wear those. I wear sneakers but not like that. Loved the long skirt and the T was cute with it. I agree the boots were wrong so I would get a different, matte finished, boots or shoes.

I liked the second outfit with the tan boots better, I think. It made the most of your legs, and just looked better. It was kind of too much with the black ones.

Question on the 3rd if you had on black knee highboots would that work since there no skin showing and the color continues. I can def see the differenc with the long skirt and sneaks. Sandwich I like both but they do give out totally different vibe beige boots are like I am mom and the black is like I am mom's cool friend. I love you doing the exampling with inclusion of others. Glad you finally got your order of the furry jacket. The portion example because of your body type totally works but on the boring side, so let see what you do with this look.......okay with the leather pants is does look chic and ready to meet up for lunch. I will try to keep these rules in mind when I'm trying to put looks together. Looks like someone needs to invest in a good black blazer of her own but son will outgrown this light weight one soon but it would be good to have a stiffer tailored single breasted blazer. It like it the season to start counting down for christmas (do you guys celebrate this holiday?). All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray, I been for a walk on a winter day, I would be safe and warm if I was in G A (that is were I am from).
