Watch: Pacifica Coastal Erosion by Drone

- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will study long-term fixes to three areas of Pacifica that have been hammered by powerful winter storms.
The analysis is a key first step in a process that could result in the agency performing upward of $6.2 million in repairs, with the federal government paying for much of the work.

Nice shooting' Tex! Love your drone footage. I have the same problem in Newport Beach, a few hundred miles south. Most of the problem we have is not rising seas, it's plain simple rain water erosion. I've been watching the rain caused erosion all over the western US for some time now, droning quite a bit of it and this is happening everywhere! Even in the US interior. My take is this has always been the case, we just allowed ourselves to believe we had a lot more time, than we really did. See "Operation Lighthouse Rescue" where they have excellent erosion records for the last 300 years when the lighthouse was built. And ask yourself, how long could that island have been there eroding like that? Again, thanks for sharing your excellent drone footage!
Winter is coming and it's going to get wild again.
Thanks for stopping by! Check out the latest update video.

It's always nice to see my old neighborhood. I grew up in the Sharp Park and Vallemar areas of Pacifica.
Great footage my fellow drone brother! I may come out soon to make my own video on the decay of this beautiful coast line. Great work!
Drones are fearless flyers 🦅
I can still see where I lived 25 years ago! I miss this place daily! I lived right by that pier!
Beautifully done!
That cliff edge just keeps creeping further inland. Thank you for the update.
Pacifica is a good name for this place, because that's where it's all going...
lol
Technically - this is great work from a camera point of view. Kudos to the makers. I am not a fan of soundtracks, but this one compliments the video nicely - thank you.
Thanks for the update. I got really interested about this since I saw some old videos of it.
Great views of the cliffs and the waves with nice lighting combining the mist and sunlight. Thanks for sharing.
I've been watching these videos for a few years now and they are beautiful and amazing but also I feel for the once homeowners.
That whole area is sand deposits from when the land was sea bottom. It is all close to the San Andreas Fault line, which runs into the sea near there and crosses the Golden Gate, east of the Farrallon Islands. Even if the Army builds concrete sea walls dozens of feet thick, eventually the earthquakes and the ocean will tear them apart and Pacifica will become part of the sea floor once again.
I had the privilege to live in Pacifica, CA for a year and it is such a great town. With the town being located between the San Andreas fault and the Pacific Ocean it is no surprise there is major geology working against the man made structures. The lower part does not look so bad, down by the pier but as you go up the bluff it is really bad. I lived there in 2000 and homes were falling to the ocean then. I feel for the homeowners but I don't think there is much man can to to combat the Pacific Ocean other than where the low bluffs are. Where I used to live is now in the ocean.
lp997 great town, reminds me of Lima, Peru with the cliff coastlines
Nice Videos I live near Pacifica when i was in the Marine Corp I Miss the nice cool weather now i Live in Miami I love both Cities .
Now this music, Fits this video 100%!! It’s so sad, Sooooooo touching. And yet so sad. So poignant. Sorrow. Sorrow.
Appreciate your effort and time in sharing.
Beautiful. Loved when you were flying through the fog.
You do some beautiful flying and editing with these coastal vids, love it!😎👌
MIND BLOWING FOOTAGE!!
They should not be paying for repairs. They might as well shred the money and put in it into the sea. They should be paying for replacement houses in locations that are not at risk of coastal erosion.
Well done........ maybe sooner next time!!!
Until Cascadia Subduction Eruption.......... beware!!
@ 2:19 :) I don't know if your thoughts were to show how infinitely more powerful the ocean is than this one lone man-made piece of equipment, but if it was... Point well taken. :D
Those black spots on the beaches is where the oil slick happened when a boat collided in the Pacific. The oil was on all the beaches in 1972 I was in high school
The ocean was never the same!!!!😭
Thanks for that little bit of history.
the ocean is slowly claiming the coastline-well done ✅
Al Diaz the ocean is slowly “cleaning”the coastline.
Завораживает! Очень красиво и одновременно страшно!
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will study long-term fixes to three areas of Pacifica..don't need expensive long term study just move back aways..it's like rebuilding in an area that has flooded numerous times..
Oh the hubris of building on the shore.
Incredible Video, I think they would just have to fill the beach with boulders to slow it down.
6:40 I can't believe that concrete slab is STILL hanging in there!
Must have used a lot of heavy Rebar!!
Seriously, watch how the palm islands of dubai are constructed then apply said principal just offshore of this coast. Imagine a breakwater protecting this precious coast.
I was wondering about the brick walls to but you know I did the northern coast Camino in 2015 and you know why they didn't have any brick walls and that's the Atlantic in the Bay if Biscay will have to look and see if they have erosion issues,Do you know the thing about the Spaniards they put their cattle on the ridge of the ocean not their homes like several acres are all for their cattle those golden blonde brown cows with the brass bells that make the most beautiful sound and then all the scouts that climb the side of the cliffs and then sheep
My neighborhood looks different and they destroyed a cove I used to hang out at, but this is way cool!
Many thanks for sharing. 👍 ✌
What made anyone think it was a good idea to build on sand?
Rich Californians, have seen a couple homes fall off their stilts. They were intentionally built right on the break of a steep hill. Once the top soils, bushes and trees were removed to build the home it was bound to happen. We had a real gully washer, and the house, that was not tied into the bedrock, fell off the side of the hill. No one was injured, they only lost a few million dollars, the construct company was fined about a half million for not tying the house into the bedrock. That was one expensive pile of trash in the end. The sad thing, the local people warned the new owners that those hills were prone to mudslides and rock falls, they were ignored. //es//A 70y/o Avid Outdoors Lady and a Native Born Oregonian.
Who cleans up all of the junk and structural debris? Does this stuff just wash away in the tide? I saw huge pipes projecting through the cliffs and well below housing slabs, so some sort of public drainage is going on. Between the construction trauma, the surface weight of all the human crap and clutter, and the ongoing vibrations of moving vehicles, what’s the mystery? I can hear Mother Nature ‘‘
Long term fix: Move everyone out, tear down all buildings, never permit building so close to the coastline, and put in place new building regulations. Problem solved.
Noone wants to leave this view. İ still see cars parking, people walking, ........ Who permitted to build these houses on this area ? Couldn't he see this place is not suitable to settle?
where is the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ?
The coastline didn't start out being this close.
I know right....they knew these were gravel cliffs and roughly the speed they erode.
And here through to the rear we have the best diving board in town....! Did I mention the price...?!
Were there once houses on the ocean side of the road.
muy bien madrenaturalesa sigue asi y arrasa con todo.bendita seas madre
naturalesa
They ignored that way too long, that shit don't happen overnight.
True Drone Reviews It was inevitable.
True Drone Reviews - This just shows how arrogant people are, especially those who have money and think that their feces does not stink. Then along comes Ma Nature a shovels a whole load onto them. Any one who builds on what appears to be unstable sediment deserves to loose all they have (not their lives), when the ground falls out from under them. //es//A 70y/o Avid Outdoors Lady and Veteran. *Added text: The government is going to shell out a few million dollars to "repair" the beach cliffs. You do know, that if those were the slums or a homeless shanty town, they would not lift a finger to help.
Servant to Be - While your comment is true, they should not be treated in that fashion, many have lost everything they own when their super rich boss sent their jobs over seas so he could earn more money. There are those who, cannot adapt to living in society and are homeless because of that. Many of my patients were homeless Viet Nam Veterans, after seeing the crap they saw in the jungles of that faraway land, they could not live in society, they were always setting up where there were good fields of fire, even though none of them owned firearms. What little money they got through the VA they spent on booze or some on food. When I was retired because of my Service Connected disabilities I was having to figure out how to stretch $200 to cover my trailer payment park rent, utilities, food for myself and my three cats. It does not work very well. I lost my Nursing license because of my disabilities, so I was able to apply for unemployability, which they gave me. When I got my first check I paid my car off and my trailer. So I only had to worry about the utilities, critter food and feed myself. I was about half a month away from being homeless myself. Who do I blame it on? I blame it on Iraq and their leader. Depending which type of disability you are receiving whether you pay taxes on it or not, some you pay a federal tax and others you pay state tax. Do not be so quick to judge the Homeless, you may end up that way somewhere down the line, by choice or by the machinations of an unscrupulous boss. Take care and if you are not doing it now, start saving some money, when you have enough move some to a high yield account. - - - //es//A Proud Honorable Disabled American Veteran, 1965-1994 - Combat Medicine and Pharmacy
Heeeey😬 but no thanks, I couldn't even trust the bridge, OMG 😨 the ocean is no joke! those 🌊waves are amazing,.. beautiful view and great job. homes on the edge idk it's a wrap.😐😑🙋💕👍
Hollywood should make a movie called EROSION.
At least the famous Taco Bell isn't on a cliff ;). I used to live in the Bay Area. Waiting for some of those multimillion dollar homes with the best view of the Golden Gate that I've been in to come down before I die. Those are built right on the cliffs.
@1:35 OMG!!!! On the 70's there were beaches all along the coast!!!!!! The waves were way out like 200 feet!!!!! They appear higher and no beaches!¡ What the hell happened?!?!???
VideoRocketz007 Millar erosion and higher sea levels
I know what you mean, I was there also. Very unfortunate.
Nice capture! 👍
Hey DW, This guy makes great video's
why coffer dam systems have not been employed immediately is beyond me
Money money money and I don't know who has it.
Lobe this place!
great video great for watching
People who have lived in the state of California have no fear it has to hit them in the face before they get the message. When I was visiting my family they had no fear. I was about to go bunkers worrying about my mom counting her money right out in the open after she went to the bank. I mentioned it all she said was you been in the country too long. My sister was the same way.storms don't bother them earthquake doesn't bother them. They do not like the fires.
We definitely don't like the fire's.
From the edge to 100 yards inland that coast is in imminent danger if collapse.
Good job bro!
One good shake and it all falls down
Good job......subbed
I am fascinated and must know if the house with the long gray deck, actually had a pool underneath... it certainly looks like there was a giant cement box under the deck... if it use to be a pool... wow, what a place it must have been... that would be very very interesting to see what the coastline looked like say 30 years ago...
Scott or in another 30
I was wondering the same! It would be great to find some picks from 30 years ago or 1918... There may have not been any house a hundred years ago , but I'd still like to see how much further it was out.
Scott, The house was sold in 2014, and from the looks of the photos, it may have been a pool or spa that was filled in: www.redfin.com/CA/Pacifica/1112-Palmetto-Ave-94044/home/1621918
T.K.W. There's an amazing website called the California Coastal Records project, by a guy who's been flying his plane up and down the coast since 1972 taking photos. There's a "Timeline Comparison option where you can go thru the filmstrips and see the changes every few years (when he took more photos). 30 years ago (well, 1987), the photo showing the house and how much land is here (it's the little white house near a red house with a black roof in an industrial area -- scroll down, and it's almost all the way to the right of the photo: www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=8714017&mode=big&lastmode=timecompare&flags=0&year=1987
Melissa McConnell ..... Thank you so much!!
damn i would love to live there ... (maybe in another life i guess)
I used to crab fish off the pier
How many feet " or yards" were these buildings set back before the erosion started
3:38 no way would I want to be that operator!
When did they start to allow ppl to build so close to the beaches? In the late 40's or 50's?
Not sure, I'm not that old =)
I wouldn't even walk my dog along that road. The surface underneath is composed mainly of alluvial silts, clays and gravel. Like building on one of those inflated bounce castles.
The red house at the top is especially forlorn isn't it. Like somebody's dream.....fading away
The water never stops, it will turn those boulders to sand in a thousand years.
Even one thousand year is enough for leaving there many generations of humans. That cliffs can help for a long period.
...not to mention all that will fall into the sea...plastic, aluminium, etc.
And the fool builds his house on sand and the rain an wind comes and his house is washed away.
Does anybody know why they abandoned all that machinery? Those excavators are pretty expencive.
those poor home owners ,
yes they only see the view but forget the view tomorrow.
Those are million dollar homes, if not more
Were, not are.
Got it
You can pick them up cheap now
Not anymore.
We have the same issue on the beaches here in Florida. No one should be living on these barrier islands. They are ephemeral and designed to shift, disappear and reappear with the currents. If the government wants to put in some infrastructure such as road, parking concessions and beach features for the public, I would have no problem with that. Now their are fighting to make the beaches private! The incessant repairing and and rebuilding off the government (.)(.)'s needs to stop. Same thing in California - build a half a mile or so from the beach and when it is about beachfront, take it down and relocate it. This is just a colossal mess for the selfishness of a few people.
Как называются деревья вокруг дома на 2:08? Подскажите, пожалуйста.
So...... why isn't the stuff being moved out of there? Its all going down.
I lived there in the 60's
hi, excuse me, why there's some down votes in this video? what's the discussion? I don't live there. So my outer view is simply erosion damaging properties, government studying solution, period. why down votes? thanks for any info.
I've watched more videos of this subject, they have downvotes too. Thought there's a discussion going on... Thanks Mike.
Mother Nature gives and she takes away.....
How is the rocks and concret helping?
Stall tactics I guess.
Instead of putting boulders only on the coast line why not put breakers out in the ocean to slow down the waves.
I would not still be there waiting to see if the rest is gonna fall or not! Yeah I'm chicken!! I wouldn't be able to sleep or anything else. So sad!! Peoples life changed....
I would walk away from my property......no way I would be able to sleep at night living there ......NOPE
It would be tough.
JESUS ESTÁ VOLTANDO.
Those people paid for these homes to be built, now they're having to pay for them to be cleared out & on top of that, they 'll have nothing to sell to help defray the cost. This is why I bought my house inland 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. In a few years I'll probably have some ocean front property for sale. lol
It is a losing battle.
Dla mnie jest to bardzo smutny i przerażający widok
I think this is caused by the rise in sea levels...
I don't understand why building houses on sand dunes was a good idea. They should clear that all out and it needs to become a nature preserve
The Earth reclaims what she gives. Only her has the last word. We are all just particles of sand on mother nature’s playground.
When a million dollar home slides into the ocean, is the ocean a more valuable resource? Yep.
The Bible says build your house on a rock not on the edge of a cliff! It’s a no-brainer!
Phantom 4 or Inspire?
Ha Ha The P4 is a great second choice, I was looking at a refurb Inspire 1. I have a lot of crap now a Mavic, Spark, Typhoon and a Phantom 3 but that Inspire just looks so freaking cool.
This is Abration?
Hooo...
Ocean will never stop until it reaches to the solid&rocky surfaces. But why are the people still there? What are they waiting for? Giving permission to build any kind of structures to contractors or engineers in this place is nonsense
RISING SEA LEVELS... now we're gonna pay for it.
the only way to control erosion in moving water is not build on the edge of the cliff. in other words you can't stop it, stop building on it and blaming the problem on something other than what it is, your own stupidity.
Artificial coastline, what do you expect?
Do some more damage to the planter see what's next after that
What led them to believe they could build there... Oh, right... greed.
The only perpetual motion machine on Earth, is the Earth (always has been, always will be).
How long do these people think that they are going to control nature? They should leave it alone & let it fix itself.
The result of human greed.
So the rich want my tax dollars to pay for their mistakes
Cough it up!
pacifica and many other parts of CA are falling into the sea they dont have to wait for the big one the small ones are taking them out to sea little by little just one more reason not to live in CA
The tacky tasteless touch of the USA inflicted on a beautiful coast which is unfortunately being slavishly copied throughout the world.
Don't test mother nature.
