I really appreciate feedback on the story part of the tutorial... I love fairy tales, so I really want to include a bit of that in my videos, but still unsure if people looking to find out how to make something will want a bit of a story first, so thank you for mentioning it.
I've been watching A LOT of sculpting and miniatures vids while finishing my thesis to keep me calm and this is only my second time watching yours but I already love your vid style, it has a great injection of humour and your tips are really useful and interesting even if I'm not planning on making the product. Just cool to see how it's done. The sea footage and the music is certainly helping me to keep chill.
This is such a detailed creation! I love mermaids and seashells, and mythical creatures in general. I also liked the little quotes from The Little Mermaid at the beginning of each video. I was very relaxing to watch your process in creating the sculpture; you're the kind of person I'd love to meet and have a cup of tea and talk about everything magical. Sorry if it sounds a little silly. Anyways, I'm looking forward for more videos of yours! Have a good day
I love her!!! She reminds me of the 80's movies fantasy design. A little "Dark Crystal" and "Legend" there. Truly magic. Hope to see more of your beautiful work.
She is so beautiful and ethereal..I love her eyes ,and her hair is so delicate..You explain things so well ,even the tail sounds easy to make until I try ha ha 😀
so in love! I woke up this morning wanting to make clay dolls and been on RUclips videos since I got off at 6pm. I'm no artist but definitely want to try.
love your mermaid art and your whole minature fairy world touched my soul with such joy going to try your tutorials ,you are so talented beautiful fantasy art
Aw, thanks LadyHawklobo! Pouring the resin onto the doll is always kinda scary, but I've liked all the resin mermaids I've made so far, so I just hold my breath and dive in.
Wow, thank you kindly for checking out my work! I love your miniatures and doll dresses and all your stuff, so it's a special honor to hear from you! :)
Wow.. Just have to say, I appreciate absolutely everything about your channel! You are so incredibly talented and creative. I love your voice and little stories. Keep up the incredible work!
You are incredibly talented and enjoyed every moment of your teaching and creating. I love mermaids (I must have been one in another lifetime. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Marilyn Phillips, Tucson, AZ
thank you for this video , i am post op transgender female and growing up i wished for nothing more than to just drift off into the sea and change into a mermaid going deeper coverd in sea life and and feeling so calm and happy that i have life under water with my long blue almost seathrough tale and giving my heart and all my sorrow to the vast sea...and no man can ever hurt sea me again and this doll is just perfect ..thank you x
She looks adorable! And by the way, thank you so much for the tip about the hair division, it helped me so much with the process of making a wig for my BJD!
Dear Caroline :o) It's very nice to see how to create a fairy doll. I want to go starting with fairy doll making. Please can you tell me, how to make the eyes of where to buy and how to make the hair? I love them very very much! Thank you for your tutorial :o)) .....Doro from the netherlands
Hi Derek, Thanks again for your interest. While I suppose some might do otherwise, I wouldn't recommend an art doll as a toy for a child. My main concern would be the doll hands when the child wanted to dress or undress the doll. The clay I use is very strong, but art dolls are usually very pricey since they are hand sculpted, I'd hate for something to happen accidentally. Ball jointed dolls are often used like toys in that the owners will dress them up or display them in different poses around the house, that sort of thing, but, again, the price makes it more of an adult keepsake (it'd be a great keepsake for a child but not really to be used as a child's toy). Hope that helps, again, thank you for the interest. :)
I'm just curious but is there any reason you don't use wire to support the clay on the hands when sculpting? Tina Yu does very beautiful sculptures that remind me of your and she has a great video of her sculpting hands. I love your style of art❤️
Awesome question. The way I demonstrated is just one way of sculpting hands, since Miss Mermaid has a shell bed, her hands didn't need wire support. That said, I've found ProSculpt clay (there I go again, I'm not compensated at all for mentioning them, I just truly love their clay) to be extremely strong and flexible at the same time. I've tested thin finger-like pieces for durability, and have come to the conclusion that hands made with ProSculpt, without wire support, are pretty darn durable. If I were making a BJD or dollhouse doll, I'd use wire. I have a hands tutorial in the works that will demonstrate my method for sculpting hands on a wire support. Thanks for the question, Madison.
+CertainlyCaroline ahhh okay! Thanks for answering! The mermaid came out great btw! I'm going to have to check out that clay, keep up the great videos❤️
I love this. I have been trying to figure out how to make armatures , so I do not use as much exspensive clay. I was wondering if there is a reason you only use white floral tape? I have green but am hesitant to try it untill I hear what you say. :)
I wouldn't go with green, but you might as well try it on an experimental 'doll'. My concerns about green... there may be some places on your doll that end up a little thinner than other places as you refine things, perhaps a green undertone will show up. I'd be a little concerned the green might rub into the clay as you apply it onto the armature. I could be totally wrong though because I've never tried green myself, so you might want to experiment on something you don't care about. Let me know your results if you end up experimenting.
your work is absolutely beautiful! thank you so much for sharing all your special techniques. I'm only just starting out with using polymer clay so your video will help me so much!
Only 2 videos in and that was enough to hit the SUBSCRIBE button! Now I'm yours for eternity...j/k this was an amazing tutorial, beautiful sculpture and in the near future I shall attempt a full size mermaid/fairy doll myself but prob on a smaller scale...I cannot wait to trawl through all the treasures discovering all the lovely hidden gems of content within your channel!
Alexis, your comment was so incredibly encouraging. What a treat for me! I do hope you try a mermaid or some sort of sculpture for yourself, and I hope you love it as much as I do. Thank you again, so glad you subbed.
I am in love with your vids my mom loves mermaids it her favorite Fantasy Creature I was wondering how much for one mermaid and one horse running with a foal can you plz tell me I am in love with your work
Thank you kindly, Blue Princess. The link to my shop is in the video description, I believe it reads something like, "if you'd like a mermaid of your own..." So sweet of you to think of your mom, too. :)
Does the resin harden or? I kinda want to make some figurines, put them in small jars and fill it with resin, but I've never used resin before, so I don't know if it hardens or what does it feel like? lol
How long did this sculpture take you? I have no patience so I usually rush my sculptures so I can finish them the same day I started them then they don't turn out well.... How long does it usually take you?
Thanks for another awesome question. I really enjoy the process of sculpting; I find it relaxing and almost meditative, I look forward to the next time I can sculpt, or make a crown, or paint the eyes, or whatever it is, so the time flies by, and I really don't even watch it. The crowning moment is the finished product, but there is something so enriching about the getting there too. I'd say, um, around 20 hours if everything is going just swell, to maybe up to 40 hours if things aren't going so swell.
Is it possible you can make a witch doll? That has always been something I really wanted to see but not make it like the cartoon witch that has a pointy hat. I want a with that's kinda reassembles Disney's hocus pocus witches and would it be troublesome to add a book and a cauldron? THANKS!!
There are some witch art dolls by other artists that I really admire; some truly amazing work out there. I don't have any plans in the near future to create a witch, but I do have some ideas brewing in my head. Thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate your feedback.
Wow, thank you so much Thea! I really enjoyed making her and I'm thrilled you like my work. I do have a shop, the link is in the video description... I think I wrote something like, "if you'd like a mermaid of your own to have and to hold", or some such thing. Thank you once again!
great tutorial! How many hours it takes to make this one doll? What if someone asked you to make 10 of them and happy to pay you? Would you make each doll individually or there are ways to use one doll as a master mold and multiply somehow? Thank you :)
That's a great question. I started typing out my reply here on RUclips and, after two paragraphs, I realized I should just write a blog post about it. So, here's my reply. certainlycaroline.com/how-many-hours-does-it-take-to-make-an-art-doll/ Thanks again, Super Kitty!
HI Missi, The paints are expensive, but you can purchase trial sizes that are very reasonable. The trial sizes go a long way, and I really mean a long way; you'll paint many a doll before you need any more. You'll find a link to Genesis trial packs in my supply list here: certainlycaroline.com/diy-mermaid-art-doll/
oh, one question more: how much polymer clay do you need for a normaly fairy doll and how much for a baby (how long is a normaly fairy doll en how big is a baby fairy doll)? I thannk you very very much, if you will help me :o)) Greetings from the netherlands, Doro
Hi Hiba! I got the idea about the slit at the top of the head from Apyrl Jensen, an incredible doll maker. it works really well and solves the problem of glue globs at the top of the head. Yes, rubbing alcohol should work as a thinner for Genesis, though I have not personally tried it. You can use rubbing alcohol to clean your brushes after working with Genesis (BTW, you can also get away with not cleaning your brushes since Genesis doesn't air dry). If you like a chalky finish, you really should try ProSculpt clay (I'm not affiliated with them, I'm just in love with their clay); it has a totally different feel to it after its baked than most other polymer clays. Genesis also has a thinning medium, I think it's just called Genesis thinning medium, lol. I use that just as much as the gloss medium, and, frankly, I haven't noticed one being more glossy than the other. I've never done any official experimenting with the two though. Hope that helps some how.
I think most people collect art dolls for display, however ball jointed dolls are used more like toys, in a way, because their joints move. Sometimes art dolls are made for dollhouses.
Thank you so much for your tutorial .Mermaid is my dream project . I want to do it long time ago . You make it look more easy than it look . I love your joke . You make VDO so fun to watch . I bought Arpyl's Baby Mermaid Class and I will start it soon .
Hi Maneerat, thanks so much for watching, I'm thrilled you liked it. You'll definitely want to check out my mermaid series. It's my most current work and it really digs in deep about how to make a mermaid art doll. Start here: ruclips.net/video/qwPpSa520H8/видео.html Happy Sculpting!!!
CertainlyCaroline I would like to ask some question. What number of lino-cutter you use(making scale ) ?I would like to buy it but there are 5 sizes in the market.
Hi Julie, Some polymer clay folks do put acrylic paint in the oven. I tried it before and didn't like the results; the paint was slightly sticky afterward, very subtle, but enough to notice. Perhaps I did something wrong though. I just stick to either painting with acrylic as a final step after baking or using heat set paints.
Hi Cory, Thank you kindly for your interest. I've got my shop listed in the video description. Here is a link as well... CertainlyCarolines.etsy.com Thank you again!
Sorry, I mean the quality of hair. Where can i take it from (when i have no dog, haha)? How to create it by doll making is very interesting and fine to see how you do that :o)
+CertainlyCaroline the thing with fondant is they're climate sensitive, low or no tolerance at all to humidity 😩 I've stopped making cake stoppers but I still have the molds, it's going to be a new hobby for me, using polymer clay this time. thanks to your channel, it has inspired me 😊
I would love to make a fairy princess at some point. Right now I've had to really slow down my production level because my daughter's been in the hospital :( Thanks for the suggestion, Michelle.
I saved both parts of this tutorial thank you for sharing:0)I've been working on a 1 inch scale mermaid but only have the bottom part of the tail mostly finished lol :0/ I have a push mold and will be using it for most of the body, head,& hands and work from there. :0)
Hi Shay, Thanks for your interest. I do sell the dolls I make. I'm offering custom orders right now since I don't have anything in stock currently. The link to my shop is in the description. Thanks again!
can you make a baby out of clay big as my thumb if so how much would it be? sorry to bother you again I just love your work and been wanting one of these out of clay :) ty for your time
It's no bother at all, of course. Yes, I can make a baby out of clay that's no bigger than a thumb. A fully sculpted baby is $375. If you'd like the baby wrapped in a receiving blanket the cost reduces significantly since I would only need to sculpt the head. A baby in a receiving blanket is $125. Your doll would be completely hand sculpted without the use of molds. Thank you again for your interest Shay!
lol this really made me laugh Since a friend and I made the dog with wig photo you used 6:20 ~We put it up as stock art for a giggle, Then it randomly turns up here! (giving me a very big surprise :P) Anyway great video and project - love your sculptures! (P.S hope your daughter gets well soon)
Thanks Natalie. No way! What a small world we live in. Thanks for your puppy picture, it fit perfectly. We're still hanging out in the hospital, but she's a little better with each passing day.
You speak like you're telling a story!! I love your voice!
I really appreciate feedback on the story part of the tutorial... I love fairy tales, so I really want to include a bit of that in my videos, but still unsure if people looking to find out how to make something will want a bit of a story first, so thank you for mentioning it.
This is absolutely beautiful. You have the patience of a saint.
Thanks for the support, FIOwerchild. :)
The endresult is stunningly beautiful
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!

I love her!!! She reminds me of the 80's movies fantasy design. A little "Dark Crystal" and "Legend" there. Truly magic. Hope to see more of your beautiful work.
Aw, thanks so much! I loved those movies...and of course Labyrinth was a fun one too.
She is so beautiful and ethereal..I love her eyes ,and her hair is so delicate..You explain things so well ,even the tail sounds easy to make until I try ha ha 😀
Thank you dearly, Christine! :)
so in love! I woke up this morning wanting to make clay dolls and been on RUclips videos since I got off at 6pm. I'm no artist but definitely want to try.

I love mermaids too... thanks for the support, Monica!
mermaids are SO beautiful
love your mermaid art and your whole minature fairy world touched my soul with such joy going to try your tutorials ,you are so talented beautiful fantasy art
At first I thought that you destroyed the sculpture with the resin..but very quickly I said noooo she captured the perfect moment!!!!Marvelous!!!
Aw, thanks LadyHawklobo! Pouring the resin onto the doll is always kinda scary, but I've liked all the resin mermaids I've made so far, so I just hold my breath and dive in.
Your work is truly lovely and in no way nonsense. Gorgeous and helpful.
You are very encouraging. Thank you so much.
Very pretty :)
Wow, thank you kindly for checking out my work! I love your miniatures and doll dresses and all your stuff, so it's a special honor to hear from you! :)

thank you for this video , i am post op transgender female and growing up i wished for nothing more than to just drift off into the sea and change into a mermaid going deeper coverd in sea life and and feeling so calm and happy that i have life under water with my long blue almost seathrough tale and giving my heart and all my sorrow to the vast sea...and no man can ever hurt sea me again and this doll is just perfect ..thank you x
I'm pleased to hear my work was meaningful to you. Thanks for letting me know. :)
If you wanted after you make the mermaid and she is all done and you bake it can you play with it like a doll without it braking
Since she is in a resin filled pond, this doll is more of a decorative piece than anything else.
She looks adorable! And by the way, thank you so much for the tip about the hair division, it helped me so much with the process of making a wig for my BJD!
OMG this is so awesome and you make the video fun and informative...you inspired me to go beyond charms
Woohoo! Go for it! Thanks for letting me know, so nice to hear.
Yeah, keep up the awesome videos
So much love for this beautiful work x
So glad you like it, thanks for letting me know.

Such a gorgeous doll and wonderful piece! 💙💙
Bravo c'est très beau et extrêmement gracile et délicat... quelle merveille, quel travail ! Et le résultat est si vibrant de Vie !!
You explain it all so great it’s good to follwcyour instructions Thank you
so beautiful, can you tell me where I can get seashells like the ones you used in this video?
I got the seashells from my local hobby store...Hobby Lobby. Probably available on Amazon too.
Mesmerizing work, thank you for share! Love from Brazil
You're the best, Angell! Thank you dearly!
Can you still play and move her around without her falling apart after baking outside the resin
So Is there a thickness of wire I need to use that won't mess up the oven or destroy the clay?
Hi Sallie6,
I'm happy to hear the video was helpful. Thank you for your kind words. Happy polymer claying!
where do you get that type of clay
Hi Tyler, you can find ProSculpt at ArtDolls.com or on eBay.
Cool do you need a certian oven to bake
Only 2 videos in and that was enough to hit the SUBSCRIBE button! she is so beautiful wish i could do as good of work, just amazing
Hey, your dolls look amazing.. what clay do you use to make the dolls ?
Where do you get big shells like in the video
Wow this is amazing 😳
I am in love with your vids my mom loves mermaids it her favorite Fantasy Creature I was wondering how much for one mermaid and one horse running with a foal can you plz tell me I am in love with your work

Just brilliant
This is amazing. I'm so inspired. I'm anxious about the baking. If you bake it too many times, does it turn the clay or burn it?
HUGE help! Thank you so much! xxoo
Does the resin harden or? I kinda want to make some figurines, put them in small jars and fill it with resin, but I've never used resin before, so I don't know if it hardens or what does it feel like? lol
Oh yes, the resin hardens completely, but it always looks wet. Amazing stuff, really.
you are so talented
Thank you so much, Lilly, you are very kind.
that must of took so long to make because it looks amazing 😇
How long did this sculpture take you? I have no patience so I usually rush my sculptures so I can finish them the same day I started them then they don't turn out well.... How long does it usually take you?

+CertainlyCaroline now I've got something to save up for ☺️
Thanks again, Thea. BTW, you're profile pic is very artistic... just lovely.
This is beautiful and unique by the way 🙃

Very cute! Loved this!😍💕
Pretty prettyyy!!
Thank you soo much for taking your time to reply all my questions.. so nice of you .. :)
No can it be played with if it is not in the resin
I think most people collect art dolls for display, however ball jointed dolls are used more like toys, in a way, because their joints move. Sometimes art dolls are made for dollhouses.

And can acrylic paint go in my oven?
Hi Julie,
Some polymer clay folks do put acrylic paint in the oven. I tried it before and didn't like the results; the paint was slightly sticky afterward, very subtle, but enough to notice. Perhaps I did something wrong though. I just stick to either painting with acrylic as a final step after baking or using heat set paints.
This is amazing! So inspiring as well, glad I subscribed :)
Thanks, Leap of Faith, glad you liked it.
Your so talented 😍
Glad u like! :)
You're an inspiration 😍
We're is your shop
Hi Cory,
Thank you kindly for your interest. I've got my shop listed in the video description. Here is a link as well... CertainlyCarolines.etsy.com Thank you again!
Wooooo Que Belleza!!! 😍😍👍
Sorry, I mean the quality of hair. Where can i take it from (when i have no dog, haha)? How to create it by doll making is very interesting and fine to see how you do that :o)
I used to make cake toppers using fondant &/or gum paste. Apparently, polymer clays are more forgiving 🙂
I honestly just recently discovered that cake makers use similar molds for their tasty creations. Guess I never thought about it before.
+CertainlyCaroline the thing with fondant is they're climate sensitive, low or no tolerance at all to humidity 😩 I've stopped making cake stoppers but I still have the molds, it's going to be a new hobby for me, using polymer clay this time. thanks to your channel, it has inspired me 😊
So cool you found a new hobby. Hope you like polymer clay as much as I do (doesn't taste nearly as good as fondant though). :)
i love this video an your so beautiful and talented too
How very kind of you. Thanks for watching!
can you make a princess something thx!
I would love to make a fairy princess at some point. Right now I've had to really slow down my production level because my daughter's been in the hospital :( Thanks for the suggestion, Michelle.
No problem. I will pray for you and your daughter. :D
Thank you Michelle, we appreciate your prayers!
no problem :D
Love this
I saved both parts of this tutorial thank you for sharing:0)I've been working on a 1 inch scale mermaid but only have the bottom part of the tail mostly finished lol :0/ I have a push mold and will be using it for most of the body, head,& hands and work from there. :0)
Does anyone know why she stopped posting?
do you sell these??
Hi Shay, Thanks for your interest. I do sell the dolls I make. I'm offering custom orders right now since I don't have anything in stock currently. The link to my shop is in the description. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! You make beautiful work I have never seen anything like it.
Thank you so much, Shay. :)
can you make a baby out of clay big as my thumb if so how much would it be? sorry to bother you again I just love your work and been wanting one of these out of clay :) ty for your time
It's no bother at all, of course.
Nice 👍
Super 👍👍👍👌👌👌
Thank you kindly!
Love it
I love the doll

Thanks Natalie. No way! What a small world we live in. Thanks for your puppy picture, it fit perfectly. We're still hanging out in the hospital, but she's a little better with each passing day.
CertainlyCaroline Crossing fingers for you all, that you can all get back to doing what you love together, and in good health
Aw, thanks so much Natalie. We can't wait to get out of the hospital!
