After having loved this song for years and having watched the low-definition video dozens of times, it was a treat to see the new HD version and to see how it was all done. Also, I thought the scratches in the beginning of the HD version were added in, so I definitely think they are cool! I was always waiting for a video for "Nurse."
Every frame is a painting in this video. Super Bond-y. Get Adam Jones on the line and convince him to find and rescan the negatives for Tool's old vids!! This stuff is so awesome.
This is a really fascinating look, especially considering that the video comes from the sort of apex of how seriously people took music videos and worked to really elevate them artistically. It was an interesting time, because a cool video would come out (the Fatboy Slim "Weapon of Choice" video comes to mind) and everybody would be talking about it, so videos would become these cultural events that they weren't before and maybe never will be again. Thanks for putting this episode together, Ken. It's such an arresting video, and I loved getting to hear so much great background on it. Our kids will never understand the appeal of something like "Pop Up Video."
Loved seeing the storyboard and original intent captured so strongly in the final piece. The Saul Bass and Maurice Binder inspiration is so clear. Cool to understand the slow/fast effects. Real film craft! Thanks Ken for sharing this celebration of team behind this timeless video! Wishing Kellii a healthy recovery.
Well this is pleasantly unexpected. I was just watching Rick Beato video on Failures Stuck on You when this notification comes through. Thx Ken! Cheers! V
What a surprising great conversation! I'm also happy to look at the storyboard and know the video deeply. Thanks to Failure, I could know and watch movies that I wasn't familiar with like 007 the spy who loved me, Fantastic Planet and Tarkovsky. I wish I could have a YOTR T-shirt!
I recently got myself my dream bass for my 40th… you can guess what it is. The sound that’s been in my head since I started playing when I was 12, the sound I’ve been largely failing to will out of countless other instruments is FINALLY in my hands. Hate myself for waiting this long. Anyway… I had somehow managed to avoid going down the Failure rabbit hole before getting this thing, but holy fuck am I glad I’m here. This channel of yours is AMAZING! I’m so grateful for the time you’ve put into sharing your passion, going into all this detail sharing the tricks… I can’t wait to devour it all. This video is a particularly surprising treat! While I’m not a filmmaker myself, some of my closest friends are and my wife is a photographer. I found this glimpse into ‘90s sausage-making absolutely fascinating. I often think about the “pressure” of burning through 2” tape back in the day and what that does to the vibe in the studio… but this is orders of magnitude more scary. The result is spectacular. You’ve got great ears, eyes and taste. Thanks again for sharing all this!
I feel so fortunate to have seen this video back when it was first released. It opened up a door with a 26-year love affair with Failure’s music on the other side. No other band has ever spoken to me the way Failure does, and had I not caught this video on MTV on that day, I might have never even known of their existence. It’s just so strange to consider the power of that single moment in time, the power of this song and the incredible beauty of this video. I even took inspiration from it in my animation projects in my undergrad. I finally got to see Failure live after a 26-year wait, and not only did the experience live up to the hype, but it straight up exceeded it. Ken, Greg and Kellii, thank you very much for taking the time with the fans. It was absolutely amazing, and it was hard not to feel like a 14-year-old kid again!
All the background information on the video gave me a whole new appreciation for the video, might for watch it right now...maybe a few times actually. (Nice shirt by the way, Ken!)
This was a great departure from music production. I'd love to see more videos like this one. I think many musicians could learn from this. Stuck On You and the story behind it are an excellent example of why getting the right people for the job is so important.
Something I've always wondered about: Phil mentioned the expense of film several times, and god knows how much money a full length album represents in studio time and expertise. Do you have any insight into why companies treat these things so carelessly? Especially since they seem to guard them so jealously like hoary old dragons? If all they plan to do is warehouse the tapes (hopefully not to just burn in the next warehouse fire) why not just give custody of them to the songwriters?
This was a really fascinating episode. Seeing how it all came together was so cool. Phil did a great job and it's nice to see his first feature film reach an audience
1.) I loved this!! Thank you for doing a deep dive on the music video with the director. So great! Would definitely love more of this kind of thing from the channel. 2.) I was SO pleasantly surprised to hear/see such detailed talk of the storyboards (since I'm a 'board artist by trade)! I'm obviously very heartened when I see filmmakers talk about the benefit of pre-production drawings so THANK YOU guys for that. Great stuff as always, Ken!
So Ive liked all of your videos so far Ken - its a really diverse set of content, and they are all detailed at a level that your fans appreciate, but this is definitely my favorite content so far! Im a Failure junkie through and through, but some content about your escapades with ON, Year of the Rabbit, and solo work would also be cool too!
I love your videos and I am trying to create a formidable home studio. I was wondering what you would recommend for an audio interface and what do you use. I was thinking about one of the Universal Audio Apollo rack units. What are your thoughts on those?
Hi Ken. Firstly thank you so much for all of your videos. I am a long time Failure fan and have found your videos so inspiring. Just on inspiration, I was wondering if you could potentially do a video on subjects such as how you stay inspired. How you cope with writers block. With all of the vsts, pedals etc available nowadays, do you feel overwhelmed by options? Im hoping you could maybe do a video on some of your struggles in the creative process and how you may have overcome those. Thanks in advance
Totally off topic but allergic from your solo album is one of my favortie songs of all time and I've been a fan since I was 17 in 96 when you dropped Fantastic Planet. If you could do an episode about the production of Secrets of the Lost Satellite that was be amazing.
Great, was hoping for more information about this video, and you really got into it more than I expected, thanks! Love this video, and love all Failure stories and inside looks. (And cool that opening gun barrel sequence seems to have already been fixed.)
Hey guys, I saw you live on april 1997 Seattle at Rock Candy. Any video of that gig to upload? Saludos desde Chile. You play really good music. 90 style
Would love to see more videos on your filmmaking experiences. This was a fascinating look at the making of this video. Immensely cool to see those detailed storyboards. It's really fascinating to see the intentional design that went into this project vs something more improvisational. Great stuff Ken. Huge respect for your work. Btw, where can I still get a YOTR shirt?? ;-)
This is really interesting. I'd wondered if that video was inspired by the Bond title sequences! Must have been pretty crazy playing the song at 3x speed for the slow-motion capture. Stay safe and healthy, Ken.
Ok this may be a silly question but it's always plagued me; when you're performing for a music video, how much is mimed versus actually sung/played? I hope my question didn't reveal too much ignorance, lol. 😁
Yeah, usually none of the video is "live" sound wise. Unless you're Failure making a performance-concept video and you use the live feed for the bridge of the song (Hot Traveler), but you'd have to be a pretty badass band to do that. : )
Ken, that third part of fantastic planet (from segue3), always seemed a bit cinematic to me. It would be great if all those songs would have videos. Had you ever thought about that?
Holy shit Ken, never in all my life would I’ve ever imagined seeing this. It was a real treat to watch, as well as all of your videos. I feel like if I ever met you, this is the kind of shit Id pick your brain on. Lol. Such an incredible story 👏 👏 👏!! I am definitely checking out Tuscaloosa. Again Thank You. On a side note, any insight about ON? I really miss that side.
Just catching this episode. Ken, do you consider yourself a cinema geek? I'm wondering based on this episode and what I suspect is a Tarkovsky reference via the title of your song "Solaris." Are there other directors whose work you admire?
I'm also a big Queens of the Stone Age fan and just geeking with the old shots of Troy hahaha
After having loved this song for years and having watched the low-definition video dozens of times, it was a treat to see the new HD version and to see how it was all done. Also, I thought the scratches in the beginning of the HD version were added in, so I definitely think they are cool! I was always waiting for a video for "Nurse."
are you kidding me this is what i been wanting do it for undone music video
Wonderful. I wish more artists would do this kind of stuff.
Every frame is a painting in this video. Super Bond-y. Get Adam Jones on the line and convince him to find and rescan the negatives for Tool's old vids!! This stuff is so awesome.

It's a real treat to see how this is all actually done
Circling back four years later to thank you again for this, Ken.

It's official. Failure turns people into winners!

wow, thank you for the look back at one of the greatest videos to come out of the 1990's in my humble opinion.
Perfect timing - I was binging failure today. Thanks!
Failure is my favorite band from the 90's that I don't remember in the 90's.
I feel so fortunate to have seen this video back when it was first released. It opened up a door with a 26-year love affair with Failure’s music on the other side. Thanks, Ken.
This was fantastic! The video makes much more sense now.
What a beautiful episode! Cool! :)
The best music video ever
My all-time favorite music video. Brilliant!
Incredible, Ken! What a treat this must be to update this, and uncover the memory. Epic.
Such a cool glimpse behind the scenes!!! Any fan of Failure will enjoy this!!! Thanks for delving!!!! ♥️🤘♥️
All the background information on the video gave me a whole new appreciation for the video, might for watch it right now...maybe a few times actually. (Nice shirt by the way, Ken!)
This is gold, what a nice experience to shoot a video like that.
That is an amazing YOTR shirt
I'm bugging out over that!!!
“Make every shot count.” Measure twice, cut once.
Thanks again Ken and Phil!
Hope you do more of this kinda thing. As a literal one-man band/everything else, it's super interesting and sparks some ideas. Very cool.
Outstanding
This was a great departure from music production. I'd love to see more videos like this one. I think many musicians could learn from this. Stuck On You and the story behind it are an excellent example of why getting the right people for the job is so important.
WOOOOOW!!! What a great opportunity to go back and see how it all unfolded!! Thank you so much for sharing this, love it!!!!!!!! 🤩✨
So good. One of the best songs/videos....ever.
Very cool how involved you are with your work Ken.👊🔥💪
thanks Ken! another master stroke
This is so much fun to watch! Thanks Ken!

This is awesome Ken! And it's so cool that you were able to include commentary and insight from Phil Harder as well!
lol 09:16 "suck on you"
Too cool!!!
This was satisfying in every way. Thank you.
This video was awesome.
Ken, thank you so much! This is seriously great!
This is so wonderful.

Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am an audio guy by trade and just loved every moment of this video Ken! Can’t thank you enough for sharing!
Wonderful! Where my worlds (music and film) collide! Thanks for putting this together.
This was a really fascinating episode. Seeing how it all came together was so cool. Phil did a great job and it's nice to see his first feature film reach an audience

Ken, please contemplate the idea of having an "oral history" on the Undone video. Now that is one where we have "a million" questions about : )
This is awesome.
Thanks for this! All of it.
Ken, this is wonderful. Thank you for sharing this in depth analysis of this beautiful music video.
Keep it going
Congratulations on reaching 120,000 views!

Man, thank you. Beautiful.
Great episode... learned a lot and of course love this song... but the process is amazing to learn about.

I really enjoyed this Ken. Super nice with the bit about the new film at the end. You're the best. Cant wait for the next videos :) .
Great, was hoping for more information about this video, and you really got into it more than I expected, thanks! Love this video, and love all Failure stories and inside looks.
(And cool that opening gun barrel sequence seems to have already been fixed.)
No one talks about these backflips! I have never succeeded to beat my fear of doing those 😂
What more would a fanboi want?? It was amazing to see how you've gone through with the video clip. Thank you for this inspiring episode!
Hey guys, I saw you live on april 1997 Seattle at Rock Candy. Any video of that gig to upload? Saludos desde Chile. You play really good music. 90 style

SO good! Thanks for this !
Ok this may be a silly question but it's always plagued me; when you're performing for a music video, how much is mimed versus actually sung/played? I hope my question didn't reveal too much ignorance, lol. 😁
Well, they play along the track, not necessarily plugged in
@@guitaristssuck8979 thanks!
Yeah, usually none of the video is "live" sound wise.
Unless you're Failure making a performance-concept video and you use the live feed for the bridge of the song (Hot Traveler), but you'd have to be a pretty badass band to do that. : )
Minneapolis proud! I wonder where the video was shot here?
Kellii is the man. Hoping for the best.
I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison of the standard and HD videos.
Ken, that third part of fantastic planet (from segue3), always seemed a bit cinematic to me. It would be great if all those songs would have videos. Had you ever thought about that?
fantastic story! so the million dollar question is when do we get to enjoy the HD version of stuck on you? :D :D :D
it's already up on episode 8 . better watch the whole video ;)
I still have my year of the rabbit shirt too
The height of 1990's production. So modern.
Great video, it was "Just what I needed" during this lockdown. Speaking of, any YotR or ON shirts left around? I'd buy one.
Loved it!
Do you plan on touching on the Empyr records you did?
Just catching this episode. Ken, do you consider yourself a cinema geek? I'm wondering based on this episode and what I suspect is a Tarkovsky reference via the title of your song "Solaris." Are there other directors whose work you admire?
What IS that intro/outro music track? It sounds glorious
Matt It’s Failure’s song Distorted Fields of off their latest record In The Future Your Body Will Be The Furtest Thing From Your Mind.
So ... Where can we watch this new HD version of the music video?
YEAR OF THE RABBIT!!!!
12:50 too cute!!
