I know this is you're personal youtube channel but I just have to tell you that 'Wild Type Droids' is the best album since Fantastic Planet. It was that immediate for me. Studio is sweet too! I wish you and you're family a great Christmas and New Year. Hopefully see you in the UK next year...
Ken, you casually dropped the best record of the year! The music feels so rich and I really enjoy honing in on one aspect at a time when I listen to the new tunes. As a drummer I appreciate the musicianship/songwriting aspect of Failure as well as the full-spectrum production. Also Kellii is giving guys like Josh Freese and Dave Grohl a run for their money with these drums parts! He's so intuitive with his displaced snare hits and beefy kick-drum heavy fills. Hoping to see you guys live 2022!
Ken, I gotta say, after listening to Wild Type Droid several times, I'm blown away by how your band continues to grow and expand into new songwriting territories, opting for distorted bass and harmonically charged leads in lieu of crushing powerchords, it's almost like Failure has discovered a new type of "heavy". Sonically, the album is so rich and crisp at the same time. In a world of heavy compression, listening to this album is a breath of fresh air where every layer of instrumentation can be heard and felt. One of the most cohesive albums I've ever heard. Can't wait for the vinyl.
Ken I have been a fan since I was 13 years old, The visibility this provides to anyone interested in you and your work is incredible. Every episode has a large amount of useful knowledge and its a true gift. Youre the Fucking Man!!! and I Love the New Failure tunes. Hope the Holidays find you well and thanks for Episode 14!!!
Been a fan since I was in 1st grade, I'm now soon to be a freshman in college! It's so amazing to see your music evolve. I'm glad to say every chapter of my life has had Failures music to keep me going!
Ken, thank you for posting these videos. I am studying music technology and used some of the techniques you've shown on your channel on my senior recording project and I'm very excited for how it turned out! Thank you for the insight and inspiration.
This was an awesome rundown - beautiful editing too. The whole setup and the section regarding consoles brings to mind the saying "common sense isn't very common".
Hi Ken. I am a fan from Germany, and I just gotta say - both Wild Type Droids and In The Future... are absolutely astonishing pieces of work, man. Thank you a lot for your music. I will listen to these records for the rest of my life. It would be amazing to see you guys live on stage one day.
What a nice simple studio setup focused on creativity and workflow. Great video, Ken! Thanks for sharing. Also, the new album is incredible. I've had it on repeat since it came out. Some of the bass tones sounded like the Wal was back. I've always loved how you use bass in your songs but it's next level on Wild Type Droid. Some real low tunings too and beautiful melodies... How a bass should be used!!
This is fantastic Ken! The quality of your videos continues to blow my mind and there's just so much content to learn about here. Every video is entirely worth the wait, thank you for all of this and keep up the amazing work. Loving Wild Type Droid by the way! Phenomenal record that will definitely be in my top 5 this year, I love how you used the instrumental tracks in the background of this video too, totally fits and is very cool to hear. Take care! I hope you've given the new album a proper post-release celebration because its special.
Thank you for sharing your space, Ken. Also, WTD is Failure's second perfect record, IMO. That is - every song is a great song, zero "good" songs. Outstanding work.
Hey Ken, any chance you can talk a bit about your „secret of the lost satellite“ Album? How it came together, how you produced it, what musicians were involved etc….awesome work there….love your channel….love your music…hope to hear more….
I did not expect to have any equipment in common with you given my rinky-dink apartment setup. So I was pleasantly surprised to see you use a PreSonus Faderport too. I suddenly feel more professional!
Ken, thanks for coming back and creating more content, particularly while releasing a new Failure album! I'm listening to Wild Type Droid now and it sounds amazing. Kudos for pointing out the 90 degree off-axis protools rig on a cart situation that has gone on far too long. While there may be situations during a mix on a large format console where you might position yourself in the sweet spot for prolonged periods of time, the likelihood is that you're probably spending the whole day rolling back and forth from the DAW cart to center position. The reality of the job is that 90% of an engineer's time (tracking, comping, editing), is spent at the keyboard editing, labeling, saving, playback, repeat. As a long-time trackball enthusiast, I have always struggled with the concept of throwing a control surface into the mix in a home studio or editing workstation. I never really understood why I would want to break engagement with the keyboard/screen and let go of my primary curser/timeline/grabber tool to put my hands on another device that does the same thing my trackball already can do. It feels like a huge step backwards and like I'm bringing that same broken workflow of rolling my chair between where listen and where I do edits into my home. It reminds me of the scene in the Steve Jobs movie where he's explaining to his former CEO that the Apple Newton failed because the stylus - "...if you're holding a stylus, you can't use the other five that are attached to your wrist." The first thought that jumps into my head when I see bays full of S1, S4, Eucons, etc. is "what a waste of money and desk space for a second mouse." That said, I have heard nothing but praise for SSL's newer plugins and the UFC-8 controller and those reports have come from sources that have the means to use whatever they want and don't typically fall for hype. I have to admit, I'm getting curious.
What a great studio Ken, thank you for the elaborate tour! The new album, Wild Type Droid, is absolutely brilliant, I think I actually cried some happy tears the first time listening to it, haha. I enjoyed hearing some more vocals from Greg as well! Failure has truly become my one of my favourite bands, your music is just a comfort to the soul :) Anyway, congrats on the new release, and I hope we'll have the opportunity to see you guys live next year! 🌟
Fantastic videos recently, so informative and inspiring. Important too because they're from a musician who is creative with his set up and not just an engineer working for others.
Hell yes that was good. Now I’m going to spend a couple days thinking about my obsession with fader controls and my DAW. Also, super jazzed to have a new Failure record. Been a fan since 91 when y’all were heavy rotation on the jukebox at Emos Houston.
This video continue being my favorite and Inspire me to improve my gear and of course my musical dedication on my compositions. I don't know how many time I saw this video haha 🍜💻
I remember seeing you guys open for Tool back in the 90s and I hadn’t even heard of you at that time and I thought you blew them off the stage. You had great songs and stage presence and Tool was just going through the motions. Everything you and Greg ever did was authentic, genuine and underrated imho!
Love the band and the new album. I know you probably don't care but my personal favourite is Magnified 🐸. Would be nice to see you play in Chile someday 🤞
I would love for you to touch on acoustic treatment in your studio. If your using any / much, ie: corners and first reflection points? Clouds? how deep? Self built or pre fabricated?... Great rundown otherwise.
I discovered your music accidentally within the last 5-7 years and I’ve resonated deeply with the melody, chord progression and writing. I recently lost two of my closest friends/bandmates to suicide and have started to feel the spark again hearing your music. Haven’t had a chance to see you in person, but I’d love to work/write with you someday. 👍🏼 Hope to meet sometime. - Isaac
Great video Ken! Very informative. Question: I am interested to understand if using speaker stands behind the Halo’s racks wound compromise the speaker position by placing them way to up high? Many thanks
It’s interesting for me to know something about writing and recording of Wild Type Droid. For example, why this album don’t have segue interludes? Can you do something like “making of...” with Greg and Kellii on Failure channel? However, album is just fantastic even without any segues. I was shocked by some songs like Submarines and Undecided, and other songs are great. Listen this album everyday again and again!
Loved getting to see this Ken! On a different note, have you tried the Acustica Audio plugins? I just got some of their stuff (Their Fairchild, Massive Passive / Vari-Mu and their amazing Taupe, and I'm really digging them so far. Haven't seen any in your mixing videos though. apparently they use a sampling technique that differs from other plugin manufacturers
you would make a good collab with Brian Wilson ( sorry if that sounds weird, just watching a Brian Wilson doc & hearing some ideas in my head ).... seriously though to your point about stereo placement... makes complete sense!!!
Have you tried a Console 1 by chance? I found myself not looking down at the controls after a time; I’d just reach, make some adjustments, and repeat, by ear. Nice workflow enhancement. Not sure if it works as well in ProTools. Fantastic album by the way: Wild Type Droids is amazing work. I’d be pretty proud after that one.
Speak for yourself on the QWERTY, I've done everything i can to avoid it as often as possible. My brain finds that amount of buttons untenable for anything other than typing out words which has become muscle memory. Set any other task in front of me and I'll fumble with a QWERTY for hours. For me I've replaced about 75%of my keyboard use in Reaper with a custom built wifi remote that runs off a cheap tablet. I have tabs for functions that i use during composing, arranging, recording midi, recording audio, doing sound design sessions, and just general settings and preferences. For some people this would be useless, but for me, i can only really hold about 5-10 hotkeys in my brain until it all goes to mush, so a well-organized color coded, labelled, remote, is HUGE.
Hi Ken, Off-topic question: Have you ever heard of the 70's band Stackridge? They have a song called "Percy the Penguin" that is possibly the most Failure sounding non-Failure song I have ever heard. New album is great!
Have you tried the new Waves SSL EV2 yet? I'm curious if you'd stick with the SSL native because of the UC1, or use the the EV2, or both? I have the SSL native channel strip / bus compressor and just discovered that I could use the SSL 360 app without needing UC1 - it's so cool!
Oh man as a genelec user you’re gonna shit your pants when you upgrade to the SAM series stuff. I went through a few pairs of VERY nice nearfields and came to the conclusion that my room was the problem… enter Genelec SAM series 2.1 setup and now my shit is tuned and phase aligned and full range. I couldn’t use anything else in my room. In a proper room maybe I would have stuck with the Meyer Amies but I don’t know!
I was always scared of "the ball". I still use a mouse on a 87 Atari :D Probably it's just a thing of comfort. I'm scared that I'll feel like a rhino playing a violin :D
Hey Ken, been watching your videos for a few months now. It's helped so much with my band's recording and guitar tone, thank you! Also check out our cover of stuck on you

Ken, please come back with a new video. We miss you!
Yea, I miss you too Ken! Whatever you're up to, I hope it's going well. OR just be chillin', that's also important in life...
15:44 I see that Greg's passion for strange headwear is still going strong after all this time.
The man,the myth, the legend is back!!!
I know this is you're personal youtube channel but I just have to tell you that 'Wild Type Droids' is the best album since Fantastic Planet. It was that immediate for me. Studio is sweet too! I wish you and you're family a great Christmas and New Year. Hopefully see you in the UK next year...

Agreed!
Yeah getting into wild type droids myself ! Deep diving in ! Great album
Clicked like before the intro kicked in.

I check this channel pretty regularly, hoping for new episodes.
Ken, thank you so much for EVERYTHING!!!
Ken, really missing your videos. I hope you've been good. Appreciate your work.
Lets see all your guitars ken. You have way more now than you used to it seems. I wanna see what guitars you like best and why.
Ken, your ongoing series continues to be some of the best musical education I've gotten in decades. Thank you!

The song Undecided on Wild Type Droid is fantastic. Synth part is very cool.
Great video and channel! Hoping to see some new content this year. It is the Year of the Rabbit, after all. 😂 (Still one of my favorite records.)
Great studio tour, Ken! I would love to hear more regarding your studio design and acoustic treatment design for mixing.
Been a fan since I was in 1st grade, I'm now soon to be a freshman in college! It's so amazing to see your music evolve. I'm glad to say every chapter of my life has had Failures music to keep me going!
Ken!!! Where are you?? We need you back!!
Yea these videos are amazing... I think there was more activity on his Patreon, at least until August 2022
Ken, thank you for posting these videos. I am studying music technology and used some of the techniques you've shown on your channel on my senior recording project and I'm very excited for how it turned out! Thank you for the insight and inspiration.
Great setup Ken! The ergonomics are perfect 👍
The Genelecs are still hard to beat as all rounders.
This was an awesome rundown - beautiful editing too. The whole setup and the section regarding consoles brings to mind the saying "common sense isn't very common".

New album is absolutely amazing, up there with In the future... which also blew me away and that you could top fantastic planet twice in a few years.
What a nice simple studio setup focused on creativity and workflow. Great video, Ken! Thanks for sharing. Also, the new album is incredible. I've had it on repeat since it came out. Thank you for this video Mr. Andrews . Love your studio video
loved this video, can’t wait for the video on guitars/live gear!
we need more pedals, amps and guitars you use in the studio
Hey Ken, any chance you can talk a bit about your „secret of the lost satellite“ Album? How it came together, how you produced it, what musicians were involved etc….awesome work there….love your channel….love your music…hope to hear more….

Great video!!! sideways protools station and display really bugs me too!!! hahaha
UC1 was a huge game changer for me, I love the plugins!!! The Uf8 is so worth the purchase too!
Ooh nice I have a Palisades and a Mood on my guitar board. Love to see my favorite musicians using gear I use as well!
YESSS HE MADE A NEW VIDEOOOO THANK YOU KENN!!!!!!

Can't wait to watch this. The new album is amazing. Any chance you'll do a breakdown of Submarines?
He's back!
please make more videos
love the mood pedal.
I have a home studio and consider myself a bit of a nerd, but a lot of this stuff is a bit over my head. Great workspace!
14:11 What about Softube Console 1? Which includes the SSL SL 4000 channel strip.
Please do a vid on your vocal sound (I’d love to see a Beato-style breakdown from effects to go-to scales/modes)

Hey Ken, are there any outboard compressors or equalizers you utilize, and if so which ones?
Thanks for this! I’m diggin’ the practical ergonomics of all of your setup/zones - I am looking to start a similar desk with some 500 series modules 🚀
Thank you
What’s that intro song? It’s amazing.
G'day Ken, is there a way to stream or a good way to buy "Secrets of the Lost Satellite" digitally?

What camera do you use, Ken? (New record rules.)
I’ve been using a Sony fs700, but this video is the canon r5 into atomos ninja v plus, which is the same combo I used for the headstand video.
Hello Ken Andrews. I just want to say that I love you. Goodbye
