In an unregulated hobby, requesting disclosures may be where we are heading. There are portable CT scanners called cone beam CT scanners. Will be interesting to see if this low cost CT scanner will provide the same technology look into packs and boxes like fixed CT scanners.
When it comes to OPC Platinum, the rookie auto version always goes for way more money (like double or triple) than the non rookie auto version. I personally like the rookie auto version better because it feels like there is something missing when the auto isn't there. Plus it's hard signed. Yes Phil, I loved CCM and Koho too. I wished they were still around.
Maybe something to consider, an example: you send a box to get scanned, they find out it has a 1/1 shield in it. They switch the box out and send a different one back (same product).
I really have to wonder if sealed wax from past years is going to take a long term hit. Who is going to take a chance buying sealed wax with the possibility that the cards/packs have already been scanned for the chase cards. The vendors might be able to adjust for the future, but no fix for existing sealed wax
Your absolutely right Josh, shipping costs is the worst part of the hobby..luckily I live in Winnipeg and 95% of all cards from 1952 til present available in Winnipeg are Hockey Cards..unfortunately Topps Hockey is an American product and I dont buy so many cards. Often because the shipping is more than the card!😅
Did you know about the Optic basketball card fiasco about knowing that the KABOOM! Chase cards could be determined by the serial number on the box hologram?
The scanning reveal was the last missing piece I needed to only buy boxes on UD epack in the future. Before that by buying a box in a store my biggest fear was that the case hit was already pulled and the box was the last of a case - but now I am almost certain I will only buy worthless boxes. Sorry, hobby shops - I know it’s not your fault, but the best cards I ever pulled were always on epack. Never in a real box…
I (Josh) am confident that the manufacturers will figure something out to give us collectors the confidence in what we are buying. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say, right? Completely understand your concerns.
The injured player I would have loved to see continue on fully healthy was absolutely Bure! As a Canadian I can attest to Phil's qualms. If you have a product labelled and shipped with true value $100+, you are more likely to be hit by all the customs duty and taxes. When cards are sent through regular mail, taxes and such are rarely attached but that comes with more risk than an insured and tracked package crossing international borders..
I’m a fan of put everything on e-Pack, and ship higher end products in magnetic One Touches, or have UD partner with TAG, PSA, or BGS to send it direct to grading.
@@hockeycardsgongshow We don’t need local card shops. Look at what happened with Blockbuster and other Video/video game rental companies. They went out of business, then the movie theatres were charging too much money for tickets and concessions, then Netflix came. Card shops are closing, apps and breakers are becoming more popular. I wouldn’t be surprised a company comes up with a subscription where you pay per month and get flagship packs or even high end packs at a discount when compared to buying a box at a LCS. We don’t need local card shops. The hobby will continue without them.
The most frustrating issue for me is when trading across borders. No money exchanged between two parties but then the person in Canada has to pay import fees. The Canadian government will never let this hobby die because they make too much money.
I can not believe collectors fall for PSA scam “Up charges” Professional Scam Artists. Collectors should boycott PSA until they stop screwing collectors. They are suppose to grade the item, NOT the player. Should be a flat fee. I’m 63 been in the hobby on and off since I was 9.
Hey josh was curious if you bought your 16-bit wyane G card? Or pulled it….I Got my 16 bit WG card on GP sports break…Seen my card on the show from ebay… Then i seen the 16-bit graded sgc 9.5… l❤the show Phil works well with you guys keep up the good work….
I believe people don't want to send their cards to beckett because they would rather see a psa 10 slabs vs beckett 9.5. It seems almost impossible to get a prestine 10. Maybe if they eliminated the 9.5 and gave 10s more people would be more incline to send to beckett. I think beckett slabs look better especially with the sub grades and the overall quality of the slab, but I'm not sending another card to beckett knowing I would more than likely get a 9.5 at best. Just my opinion
technically a bgs 9.5 is the same grade as a psa 10 (both Gem Mint). Perceptively though, I think the hobby prefers a 1-10 scale. Appreciate you adding your thoughts to the show!
Hey guys great episode. Nice to see Lewi come out of his shell! I am a researcher (chemist) who designs contrast agents for medical imaging. No joke, last year me and my buddy were talking about the ability to scan packs and boxes and how easy it would be. I am not going to mention any technologies/modalities, but I think this is the tip of the iceberg. There are systems that could probably do a better job and not that costly. It would depend on the chemistry specific to dyes and printing materials used for hit cards. I have been saying for a while now, upper deck needs to take over distribution. This would avoid the BS we have seen with distributor gouging/screwing over LCS and help avoid issues like this too. Also audit their processes as how easy would it be to track a case with an expensive Bedard. Now that we are routinely seeing Bedards sell for big bucks, scammers will come and like Phil said, money changes people. And you forgot to mention that McDonald's even hired a secondary security team and still the fraud was easy to accomplish for the perps. So I think it's an issue that should be taken seriously by manufacturers and collectors. Nice work!
I don't understand all the love for My Card Post. Most of what I see is listed above ebay even though there are lower fees. The offers I made were never replied to and the offers sent to me undervalued my cards and overvalued their cards. I believe those of you that have had a good experience there but I thought it wasn't worth the price.
First of all they are a sponsor of our show....always disclose that when we talk about them. I (Josh) have had a very good experience. People overpricing cards is an issue on any fixed price marketplace and I know MCP is working like everyone else to provide incentives and sticks to ensure listings have good prices. You can submit offers and I've found really good deals doing bulk buys as well. Appreciate you chiming in!
Hey, thanks for adding your thoughts. I hear your frustration, and it sounds like you’ve had a less-than-ideal experience on My Card Post. It’s certainly disappointing when offers aren’t replied to or seem unfair. We’re always working to improve the marketplace and make it a better experience for everyone. What do you think could make the platform more productive and valuable for you?
About the question from Rally_SC who suggested you invited some collectors on the podcast...maybe an alternative to that would be you could just take 2 minutes of the show to talk about someone's collection you saw on Instagram or somewhere else. Just a thought.

My man Bobby Rollin!! Nostalgia at its finest those companies!
Please tell me when the Instram Poll is online so i can vote for the Blast from the past !!
Yes Denis!!

Very good point
The 2024 version of pack and box weighing. I remember eBay sellers with packs that guaranteed auto or mem because they’ve been weighed.
Yeah good comparison for sure.

I hope at some point the US/Canada figure out a better solution!
Try living in UK, unless you buy from a reseller you aren't getting anything other than Premier league junk cards
@@-The-Darkside really? You don't have LCS's where you can buy a box or case of anything good?
Did you know about the Optic basketball card fiasco about knowing that the KABOOM! Chase cards could be determined by the serial number on the box hologram?
They should drop in value any minute now 😅 good to know this fact
Have not heard that!
Great episode guys. Where this is going to have to go is fully online on E-pack or similar. Only way around it.
Hadn't thought of that.....it could be a solution.....

What if you knew that a breaker documented that a CT scan showed a 1/1 shield in the break, would you consider buying into the break?
The injured player I would have loved to see continue on fully healthy was absolutely Bure!

What would happen to local card shops then? Would be crazy if it came to this.

The only boxes that will not be open are ones without a hit so maybe single buyers do not have to be worried.

Phil refusing to participate in the set he picked 😂😂😂
lol
😂, that was good!
Maybe something like lead, some kinda polyamer they could wrap products in. Im sure some scientists could make something

Phil - not True Lies, even before that Ferris Buehler broke the 4th wall.
Love that movie!
Disagree with Phil, simple adage "Buyer Beware". His statement sounds more like Authoritative and not Libertarian in my opinion.
That 50/50 club auto card
Is it certified by experts?
Should be slabbed no?
Id never buy it myself but im sure tue buyer should have something
It only came with a COA on a separate piece of paper and from what we understand, PSA won't grade it.
HOW DID NO ONE PICK 05/06 SP AUTHENTIC
I did! (Josh)

Wow, makes me feel even more angered about this crap! Thanks for the insight! Slowly but surely the shell will come off!
Great pod boyz...thanks! The best part was Lewi breaking out of his shell and doing a "churning the butter" jig right at the end!
Little by little it's happening. Made him watch that lol.
😂 thanks! I’m coming around! I appreciate that!
If your someone who likes ripping high end products U should be concern if people are scanning products.
