I love that you guys will review things like the Graveyard Shift one week and then The Night Porter soon after. Thanks so much!
Well done! I saw this 30 years ago on VHS tape and was stunned. Every time I see Charlotte Rampling to this day I think of either Night Porter or Zardoz. She's a gem. Dirk Bogarde nailed this role. Cheers.
Those eyes! 😍
Bravo for showcasing a lesser-known classic. Charlotte Rampling is a powerhouse actor and I suggest you check out “45 Years” which came out a few years ago. A great and deep marital mystery
All right I'm all geared up for Ilsa She Wolf of the SS review!
Liliana Cavani was a journalist during and after WW2. She interviewed two female Holocaust survivors who were the basis for this story. The male character was easy to write as she knew about the Nazis first hand.
This is why I subbed to this channel so many, many years ago (and why I suggested 'Heartless' way back when) - to see you two review movies I've never seen (let alone heard of). This channel has opened my eyes to so many films that are not talked about enough.
Rampling is such a captivating screen presence. My favorite role of hers is as the lead in Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories. Last year, I attended a concert in Paris and coincidentally ran into her in the foyer while we were leaving the theater. She graciously accepted my star struck admiration and praise
You guys have crazy range and will take on anything. It’s super impressive. Keep it up, gentlemen love the channel.
Rampling was a great model in the sixties
The 70s, what a fantastic time for films. The Night Porter, Swept Away, Le Magnifique, Seven Beauties, The Wicker Man, Tess, Saint Jack, Go Tell the Spartans on and on the list goes. It really was great to these films on the big screen. Thanks for a wonderful channel.
Wow! You don't see many female directors doing films like these! I have to hand it to her! I'll have to see this one! Great review guys!
Nice to see you guys "diversifying", so to speak. Movies like this one, or the stuntman one, or Being There. I appreciate and will continue to appreciate your reviews of older sci-fi and horror (this is how i found you after all, and they are so comfy!) but expanding yours and our horizons time to time is great.
Edited to add - you also tackled it greatly. You could also explore "La caduta degli dei" by Visconti.
Looks like an interesting, if hard going, film. You guys must have the most eclectic collection of reviews on this platform
I first had contact with this movie when I watched the "The Night Manager" mini series and I told work colleagues about it and basically all that were a little bit older than me assumed that I watched the "The Night Porter" instead. It was both awkward and kind of funny and the mistake or misunderstanding did not reveal itself that very day but only afterwards when I got home. So I got curious and and so I watched "The Night Porter" and a lot of the questions I got about "The Night Manager" finally made sense... Just to clarify, I don't recommend "The Night Manager" at all, but I recommend “The Night Porter”, a thoroughly superior product.
Hope you're feeling better from your headache Gary also great review guys
Hey Mongo 👋, ah that would explain the no wicked Wednesday stream. 👊
Bogarde was actually a british soldier who liberated the concentration camps.
He never wrote or spoke about it afterwards.
Bogarde is such an interesting, enigmatic actor. I recommend 'Victim' (Dirk at his finest, imo). One of the first British films to depict a homosexual character seriously. Ground-breaking - and it led to changes in the law in the UK. 'Death In Venice' is another significant film in Bogarde's career, but for me it's too long and self-indulgent (subject matter is very controversial, too).
Gestapo's Last Orgy is a great addition as well. Similar theme and more explicit. 👍
I think dirk bogarde is great in the servant and darling. I’ve watched this one twice over the years and it’s not an easy watch. Have you guys done salo ?
I remember this movie been restricted for people under 18 or 21. The 70's were great for risky movies.
Wow! What a great review guys! Thank you so much! 👍
You guys are branching! I love the variety. Next week could be anything from Splash to Cannibal Holocaust.
Charlotte Rampling is an excellent and beautiful actress. She was also in Zardoz, and many French, British and US films.
Also I recognize Charlotte Rampling from an older 90’s movie, called The Swimming Pool. YOU BOYS SHOULD REVIEW THAT MOVIE 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻! She is in all types of weird, sexual, vintage roles!!!!
Oh I guess it’s from 2003, but it seemed older in my mind! I just remember seeing this when I lived at home . . . yet my mom sold that house in 2001????? Hmmmmmmmm . . .
Im really enjoying your reviews, cheers guys.
"Peak art house cinnema"
Me, nodding knowingly with a half eye-roll of respect, "Ah!"
Great channel with pretty cool movie selection!
Orca The Killer Whale As just received a 4k release Would love to see that review
Surreal Noir Cult Exploitation in Nightshaded Cinema
You could tell that this review made you guys quite nervous at times. I very much appreciate that you did it anyway.
The first thing that came to mind was Adrian Edmonson yelling Hello Night Porter in Guest House Paradiso 😂. I'll be honest I haven't seen this, but I really appreciate the review as always 👊.
It's been shown on BBC Two three times (1997, 2000 & 2001) but seems to have been shelved since then which is a shame. Interestingly another one of Liliana Cavani's films 'The Cannibals' was also broadcast on BBC Two. Now we get Celebrity Masterchef..
After reading how Duran Duran's video for The Chauffeur was partially influenced by The Night Porter I watched the film and became aware of The Night Porter's ongoing impact.
Japan - an early 80s 'New Romantic' avant-pop group released a track called 'Nightporter' [1982] which was directly inspired by the film.
@@philipford6183 Wow thanks for the reply I had no idea; I'm checking Japan's "Nightporter" out now and it's awesome how entertainment can inform about genuine historical events for sure. Kudos to Off The Shelf Reviews as always for reminding us of and/or introducing all to films.

Madonna is a huge fan of this movie. Her music video Justify my Love homages it. ❤
Thank you so much guys ! x😍
YEAHHHHHHHH SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU COME UP 🖤🖤🖤🖤!
Great acting and writing, well made film, indeed controversial for many reasons for the time it came out, but interesting to think what was controversial then and what is controversial now in cinema
shelf life! ❤
Thanks boys 👊👊

Dear god....is this what passes for comment. This movies all about alienation and compatability in alienation even if it's from two diametrically opposite milue. Its a staggering compulsive movie which is even part of the curriculum in psychology and social psychology degrees. Please put some proper research into it then with the key of understanding you might just close the door on the superficial world to enter the full one.Incidently I have a signed by Charlotte Rampling DVD of this.
Almost first.
I can tell you ‘didn’t go to university’, mate.
It’s glaringly obvious.
You’re too smart.
Wrong. Definitely in the wrong.
And whys that then?
