  • I am finally back to riding again after enjoying a long summer vacation and getting a major modification done to my bike. If you have an Africa Twin, or any other dual sport motorcycle, you may want to check out the modifications that I have done to get some ideas on what you might want to do to your motorcycle. No matter what type of dual sport motorcycle you have, you can do some very simple things to make it fit you better and accommodate your specific needs.

    I am 5’6” and have an 2019 adventure sport. Also bought the krooztoon lowering kit but the 50mm, all told, still as much clearance as my KLR650. That with a Touratech low profile seat the big twin is perfect for me.

    Thanks for MCY setup walk-thru. Q: With lowering kit what is your MCY seat height? Did it drop from standard seat 34.3' to 33.3' or standard seat low position 33.5' to 32.5?

      MAMS, thanks for watching and for your comment. I always have ridden it in the lowest seat position. I just went out to the garage and measured it with my wife. We measured 31 to 31.25 the best we could tell. After having ridden it now it makes all the difference in the world. I also compared the ground clearance to a friend of mine who has a 2018 model DCT. My bike was lower by only 3/4 of an inch. I hope this helps. If you want more details, pics, etc, just leave me an email and I will see what I can do to send.

      @@mams4480 , Still loving it. Best decision ever. It gives me so much more confidence. It is still a heavy bike, so I bought a light bike to practice improving my confidence off road. I think my AT is best suited for long distance with some light offroad. I do not regret lowering it.

    Woudl be nice if show diffrence between lovering kit with you sitting on the bike, I'm 5.8 to 5.9 on the good day and really considering africa twin adventure sports 2018model like you i will need to lower it. Thanks for info.

    • @briansrides1558
      @briansrides1558  Год назад

      Hi Marcin, sorry I did not sit on it when I filmed this. I can tell you I am almost flat footed now. Best advice is to sit on your bike of choice, and see where you are, then see what kind of lowering kit is available for your 2018. Remove the seat and sat on it and then measure the seat to get an idea of how much room that gives you. The 2018 model is definitely higher on suspension than a stock 2020 model. There are a lot of 2020 models now coming available as gently used. I would go for that and get the latest touch screen and technology if you can swing it.

    Brother I want to say thank you. When I bought the AltRider luggage rack with the mounts I didn’t know that would block me from a lot of pannier racks on the market. Knowing you were able to fit the Touratech racks with the AltRider luggage rack was a godsend.
    How do you like the Touratech racks? Would you still buy them again?

    • @briansrides1558
      @briansrides1558  2 года назад

      Sanis, thanks for watching. I have all good things to say about the Touratech pannier racks. I have a buddy that has outfitted his bike with all Touratech brand and he is also very happy with their products. I will say that when you mount the Altrider Rack with the pannier racks they share one of the bolt locations and you do have to modify the spacers. I went to my local hardware store and found some spacers that would work and so it was not too bad. Glad you found the video helpful.

    Also near Memphis
    I can sometimes be impatient signed up for motorcycle classes went to the Honda dealership and they had the African twin adventure sport 2021 for 2k off so I jumped on it
    Was starting to think I made a huge mistake
    And bought it before finishing the class
    Now I realize it’s too tall and I just don’t feel confident riding it
    My inseam is 32 in with my shoes
    I feel good going up and down my long driveway
    Shifting into second and I have a steep hill leading to my back door
    Practiced going up and down it and stopping on an incline and going without rolling
    But turning is just so scary
    The kit for adventure sport is 50 mm only but I think that’ll be perfect
    I don’t plan on doing a ton of crazy stuff either
    I just wanna get off road and see some trails and something that can make it to the trail heads I’m gonna hike

    • @briansrides1558
      @briansrides1558  2 года назад

      yes, the Adventure Sport has a totally different suspension setup. I hope the 50mm works for you and good luck. You should be fine with more experience, and try getting in the habit of leaning to the left side slightly off the seat when you stop so you can balance with your left leg. Get you some engine guards to protect it because you will drop it sooner or later.

      @@briansrides1558 I didn’t realize Honda has a 30 day return policy gonna try talking to them once they open today about that.

    Hi Brian Great Lower Kit update and Love the Tusk soft bags..... Hey given youve been on your lowered AT for a while, do you still find it low enough for the way you ride ??? I'm 5'8" with 30 " inseam and wondering if 1.18" is enough or do you wish you had gone with the offered 50mm 1.96" ????????? ALL of my riding is now on Paved or Hard packed dirt roads.......... At 65 my Single track days are over with such a heavy bike... Doubt it would end well hahahaha Thanks for your thoughts............. OH if I can ask What did the bike shop Charge you for the INSTALL of the lowering kit and did they do it all or Just the Front Forks... Thanks Again

    • @briansrides1558
      @briansrides1558  2 года назад

      Hi Mark, I dont think you are going to have a problem if you go with the 50mm kit. I have taken mine recently on the SM500 trails and I rode it pretty hard and did not lay it down. I almost lost control in a curve but pulled it out. I dont notice any difference on how it handles. What I notice is that when I stop, I can get my footing and keep it from falling over. I can also now turn around slowly in gravel and uneven places without it falling over because I have better control. If you are riding mostly paved or hard packed, then by all means get yourself even more control. I think I paid about $1000 for the dealer to do the mod. The front forks are not easy and that is where the labor will rack up. If was going to do it again I would probably go the 50mm kit! You won't regret it! Enjoy - Brian
