Hey, this guy ain't wrong. I have a 40 gallon tank and in that tank I have 6 Corridor catfish, 8 tiger barbs, four nerite snails, and a rubber lip pleco. Absolutely no issues at all. The tiger barbs do like it nip at the corrys but once I added the firemouth I didn't see that issue any more. If this was helpful to you then please like this comment so others will see it.
Also, Buenos Aires tetras should be a good one (haven't tried it tho). They are just as active as the firemouth. I have 5 of them in another tank and they are one of my favorite fish
Ya my firemouth tank had nerite snails black skirt tetras and 5 firemouths I only saw problems between the firemouth when 2 of the paired off and became aggressive. They really never bothered the blackskirts though just the 3 other firemouths

When it comes to tank mates bigger tetras are great, plecos are great, I personally wouldn’t do honey gouramis, maybe a pearl gourami would work but with the long feelers firemouths can pick at those. Blue rams I don’t know if they are good or not they like different ph levels and heat so I personally would do them. Bigger Cory cats could work. With any cichlid tank mates it also depends on the fish itself because their personalities can very. With my experience long flowing fins won’t do well
diamond tetras are another good choice! i have a school of 11 in my 75. They are big and sparkly so they don't get outshined by the flashy cichlids and show up great on a black background like the sparkly cichlids do... and you're not awkward!
I am currently keeping a male thorichthys maculipinnis, which is from the same genus as the firemouth, with a blue gourami female, a paradise fish male, a betta female, an ancistrus female, 4 corydoras, an apple snail. Also everyone says swordtails are perfect thorichthys companions. My thorichthys chases the gourami, but he doesn't actually hurt her and leaves all the other fish alone.
Have 2 with an electric blue acara, Congo tetras, a salvini, 2 blood parrots, 4 severums, 7 red head tapajos Geophagus and a gold nugget pleco. Will be adding a green terror and an Oscar in the future.

Hi Ty. I just purchased a firemouth for my community american tank. It’s currently in qt for a few days and all it’s doing is hiding. is this what i should expect? what can i do? should i get another one? man a timid fish in my american tank is no bueno

Steve When I said one I meant just one cichlid. When cichlids have other cichlids around they can fight so the more space the better. You can house lots of cichlids in a tank together but it’s a process. You might be ok or might not. It a lot of times depends on the cichlids personality. With your 75 setup it sounds like it would be fine
I had a firemouth cichlid for about 6 months healthy but this morning found him struggling to swim and he died. Added a pleco about a week ago found him dead idk if that affected my firemouth health water parameters are fine my red eye tetra look fine
I’m really sorry to hear about your firemouth dying. It’s very possible the pleco brought something in. It’s hard to know what happened without a lot more information

My sever year old son picked a firemouth Cichlic and I added to my 90 gallon with African cichlids (peacocks and Haps),Got him about 1.75 to 2 inches and now he’s 3.5 to 4 inches and doing just find he’s able to hold his own

Should be fine. I have 2 angel fish with a firemouth, 2 jack dempseys and 2 parrot cichlids and some tetras. They all get along well and tetras have their own hiding spots.
Hi I have a firemouth that is attacking my conga tetra s he has even killed one and a red fin tetra so I would say no to putting any other fish with these you might just be lucky yours has not attacked your other fish

Every cichlid is different. Tank size and setups are additional variables. I’m not surprised you have had a different experience. But I promise you not every Firemouth is as chill as you described haha
The vague answer would be 1 depending on bioload and filtration 2 how often you are willing to waterchange 3 the size of the fish 4 territory requirements for whatever fish. With 40 gallon tank I would start with 1 firemouth and maybe 11-15 blackskirts if u use my fish as a reference. U don’t want to throw all that in at once though I would work up to that then go from there.

I've kept firemouths with convict cichlids, jack dempseys, and oscars. Tank size is all important.

Firemouth should be fine. They are super shy in the beginning so don’t be alarmed. Give them time to settle.
As long as the cantfish arnt to big to eat it I’d say ya throw him in there

I think it will work great although I’ve never kept a peacock eel but I think you will be fine
